Kingston is a city in Eastern Ontario, Canada. It is on the eastern end of Lake Ontario, at the beginning of the St. Lawrence River and at the mouth of the Cataraqui River - south end of the Rideau Canal. The city is midway between Toronto, Ontario, and Montreal, Quebec. The Thousand Islands tourist region is nearby to the east. Kingston is nicknamed the "Limestone City" because of the many heritage buildings constructed using local limestone.
Growing European exploration in the 17th century, and the desire for the Europeans to establish a presence close to local Native occupants to control trade, led to the founding of a French trading post and military fort at a site known as "Cataraqui" in 1673. This outpost, called Fort Cataraqui, and later Fort Frontenac, became a focus for settlement. Since 1760, the site of Kingston, Ontario, was in effective British possession. Cataraqui would be renamed Kingston after the British took possession of the fort, and Loyalists began settling the region in the 1780s. Kingston was named the first capital of the United Province of Canada on February 10, 1841. While its time as a capital city was short (ending in 1844), the community has remained an important military installation. Kingston was the county seat of Frontenac County until 1998. Kingston is now a separate municipality from the County of Frontenac.

I've always felt that Kingston should have been ontario's capital, given it has so much more history
1841-1844, Kingston capital of Lower and Upper Canada. After the war of 1812, they decided that Kingston was too close to the enemy, Americans. Queen Victoria decided on Ottawa.

Great lake/river front town. From North Carolina but have been there a few times in the summer. New street and sidewalks look great. Would be great if they worked on restoring some of the old historic buildings next. Reminds me of Wilmington NC so I feel at home there when visiting. Home of The Hip too :). RIP Gord.

I live here born and raised.we take pride ourselves on being a part of living history.prison tour is really great lots of stories and tours are given by retired guards.fort henry always a good place to stop and look over the city.city hall is beautiful.like it or hate it we are steeped in sir john a. History as first prime minister and our city as the first capitol.but there is so much more to do then old historic buildings.sailing swimming baseball any and all outdoor activities you can think of we have it.my father was a city alderman for 17 years in the 70s and 80s.his name is all over city and we have a park in his name.so i have a unique perspective on my hometown.i love living here and even with its issues such as homelessness and addiction.there is respect for all and everyone is welcome.no i do not work for travel agency or city im just a retired person who tells it as i see it.if you visit check out the off the beaten path stuff,its cheaper and more fun.yes i have bumped into the hip boys over the years and dan ackroyd bill shatner,and some very famous hockey players,went to school with a few.they come because no one bothers them and we in kingston dont really care.sorry to be long just proud of my hometown

A warning to business owners, never setup shop here. They will come along a double your property tax on you without warning. Avoid any municipalities that have a "climate mitigation office" , imagine they think we can change the climate? And they will throw all your money at something that cannot be changed, not their money, your money, no vote, no say, they will just do it and give you the bill. I almost forgot to give you the new city tag line! Kingston a city of choices, Rent Lease or Leave, the choice is yours.
Canada is still one of my best country that I have visited 27 years ago hope that I can make another visit there but have to wait until d pandemic settles down .Nice of u showing us around .

We're thinking in moving to kingston but we want to know how is the every day life there ...we appreciate the feedback
From our short visit - we really liked the city. But hard to comment how it is if you live there, and there are different areas like in every city - old, new, expensive, cheaper, etc.
I love kingston, but I will avoid it with my tourist dollars for the rest of my life. I just watched the kingston police steal Jerry cans of fuel from the truckers in ottawa. Just following orders like so many boot thugs in history.
