I've chosen to go wide. My author's website seems to build brand, together with social media. Lots of product and promotion seem to be key elements. I am writing several book series. LOVE this show. Never heard of AuthorHouse. I’d recommend checking them on The Alliance of Independent Authors Watchdog list of services. They’re extremely good at weeding out the good from the bad.

      Services which fail to align with our Code of Standards, have given rise to consistent complaints and, in some cases, have been subject to legal action.

    • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure. Just make sure you don’t duplicate publish to the various platforms. This means you can use one platform to publish to Apple, but don’t do it to the other. Does that make sense?

    • @victorlinguist
      @victorlinguist 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DaleLRoberts I am not sure I got it, Dale. IngramSpark, for example, does not allow you to choose who it will use extended distribution for (I am talking about print books only). Therefore, my book with same ISBN is both on KDP (my listing) and also there on Amazon through IngramsPark partners. So far, no issue. Am I missing something?

    • @DaleLRoberts

      Victor Dias O. Santos you’re fine with IngramSpark and Amazon. But, Draft2Digital, PublishDrive and Smashwords have overlap on the distribution. • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Avoid vanity presses. If you're unsure about a service you are considering, Google it. Better yet, learn to publish yourself. That way, you retain control over your books, royalties, and publishing accounts. All of the major booksellers like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, Google Books, Kobo, etc. do not retain any rights to your work whatsoever. The only time you're expected to be exclusive is if you've opted into the KDP Select program on Amazon. The exclusivity is for 90 days at a time, and you can choose not to opt in at all at the start or opt out at any time after that.

      For me, Microsoft Works. The issue you'll run into is when using auto-formatting software on KDP. I'd recommend hiring out someone to do the interior for you. Or, save your final file to PDF. Then, use the Kindle Kids' Book Creator to save to a .mobi file. Then, upload the mobi file for your ebooks.
      Fair warning: If this is your first picture-heavy book, then be prepared for a lot of hassle. If I had to do it all over again, I would've hired someone. Just my take. Pop into the Self Publishing Books Group on Facebook or LinkedIn and put out a request for a good interior designer who specializes in image heavy books.

We had an experience with Dogear Publishing but things are not getting well. They stopped paying and do not respond to messages ot phone calls. Reason we picked them was the quality of the final printed product (at the moment we are not interested in ebooks). Our book is image heavy so I am crossing my fingers about the final quality. I have another question regarding ISBN. Apart from when you have no options other than getting your own code since the platform chosen doesn't offer one, in case you could choose what are the advantages of having your own ISBN code (in Italy the cost is around €80)? Also, if we got an ISBN free from the previous publisher, do we need to have a different new one if we transit to a different publisher? Even if the book is exactly the same? Or should it be a "second printing" and a different ISBN (even with the same content)? And if the code is purchased in Italy is then valid worldwide? Thanks! And sorry for the many questions.

    • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Guido Frazzini no, haven’t checked out a coffee table book yet. Give IngramSpark or Lulu a shot for that. As far as ISBNs go, you can’t take a free ISBN with you to other platforms. The thing you have to ask yourself is:
      If someone pirates or steals your copyrighted work, are you willing to take them to court? And, will you have the expenses for litigation regardless of the region.

      @@DaleLRoberts Thanks for your reply, Dale, but guess what - I already knew that from one of your videos. 😀
      I intend to use Findaway Voices. But the real question is, if it will be shown as the same book on Amazon with different formats, even though the audiobook will be distributed by Findaway Voices and the remaining ones by KDP. How does Amazon know this is the same book? By the author and the title? Unless I can use Findaway voices for all available formats. Otherwise, if I understand it correctly, there will be two different publishers. Is there anything I'd have to do to link the audiobook to the ebook and paperback, so it will appear as the same title on Amazon or it is done automatically?

      Hmmm, possibly in the custom option for KDP. I’m not entirely sure since hardcover is in beta on KDP. Look into IngramSpark or Blurb. Sorry I don’t have a clear answer, but that’s an unusual trim size. If not, you’ll probably have to look into offset printers and paying an upfront fee. If that’s the case, consider crowdfunding your project.

    Whats the difference between aggregates companies and your local companies like Simon and schuster, Dorrance, Archway ect.?

    • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aggregate companies merely distribute to numerous online retailers. Simon & Schuster is traditional publishing. Whereas Archway has an imprint with S&S. They function as a self pub platform, but... BE CAREFUL with Archway. They have a warning on the ALLi Watchdog list with issues in quality, value, service, communication, transparency, marketing and legal. And, Dorrance Publishing appears to be a hybrid publisher who helps indie authors while fulfilling trad pub. Again, the Watchdog list gives them a warning, but not as severe as Archway.
      You can always cross check these companies with the Alliance of Independent Authors at DaleLinks.com/Watchdog.

On the Alliance of Independent Authors' Watchdog Service, CFP has a caution rating and is noted for concerns of "Quality, Value, Transparency, Marketing, Contract, Practices." Also, there are further notes on "An aggressively marketed vanity press targeting Christian writers."
      Full disclosure: I'm NOT a big fan of vanity publishers. They tend to overcharge authors and will often coax writers into ludicrous contracts where they lose all publisher rights. Proceed with caution, Yulinda.

But, you’ll want to use only one of those avenues for fulfilling that. Or, if you’re already published through Amazon, then you’d deselect it in the previous mentioned platforms. Make sense?
      And, remember, if you publish ebooks through KDP and opt into the KDP Select program, then you agree to stay exclusive to their platform for 90 days. That agreement does not apply to print or audio.
