    This is a great video. It shows that the preload on the pinion bearings is set WITHOUT the carrier in place. Soooo many people do it with the carrier installed. Nice work.

    For the life of me, I don't understand how or why, TH-camrs keep making the same mistake with music in the background...it is NOT cool, trendy nor does it any way make the information any more enjoyable to watch. Good Lord.

    I used a flimsy 1/4" drive in lb beam style to check pinion preload and after breakaway torque it would give a jerky or hopping motion as I spun the assembly. Anyone experience that before?? I would spin a tad quicker and I think it smoothed out. But it would do it every time.

    • @josephmartin2362
      @josephmartin2362 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Overtorqued -- No. Possibly if pinion bearing preload is negative (looose). More likely to be caused by u-joint or driveshaft out of phase or balance.

    • @63Seddy
      @63Seddy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need a. Brass drift. And hammer to hit the pinion head and flange side to seat the bearings that will rid the notchy feeling when checkin preload

  • @craigskripek1644
    @craigskripek1644 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Very basic, leaves out lots. For starters you don’t use impact guns setting preload. Seal will add extra inlb to your preload. If your gona do it do it , learn the right way.

    Am I looking for the torque reading when the pinion initially breaks loose or am I looking for a sustained reading as the pinion turns?

    I have seen different videos where they do all this without the seal in there and then when they set preload correctly they remove the flange and install seal. But I though once the crush sleeve is crushed you cannot loosen it back up?

    • @johncasor9698
      @johncasor9698 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you are correct...

    • @Ashroyer86
      @Ashroyer86 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They just get the tension started withou the seal without crushing the sleeve to spec. This is so the pinion can stay straight enough to hopefully not damage the seal while the nut is tightened to spec during final install at which point crush sleeve will be crushed to spec and deemed not reusable.

    Question: So the pinion bearings do not need to be pressed on? Just do it by tightening the pinion nut?

    • @MoloneLabe
      @MoloneLabe 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      74crazydiamond yes the bigger bearing near the teeth needs to be pressed on. Also the one at the top needs to be pressed on as well but it could happen while you tighten the pinion nut.

    • @therealjpoe23
      @therealjpoe23 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Front pinion bearing will be pressed on as you run down on the nut. Yes. There is no other way to do it.

    • @photodave01
      @photodave01 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tighten the nut to 140 ft/lbs. Then check preload with an in/lb wrench. Preload should be between 16-29 in/lbs. I shoot for 24.

      Your crush sleeve is not crushed. No freaking way you're crushing the crush sleeve with an impact like in the video. It takes about 300 ft lbs to crush the sleeve. I royal PITA with a rear in in the car.

  • @johnnypizarro4956

    I see you use an impact gun instead of a torque wrench to crush the sleeve and get the proper preload. I thought you needed to torque the pinion nut to at least 150ft. lb.

    • @richguitar93
      @richguitar93 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually I saw a teacher do it at 300lb to crush the sleave. I used a vise to break the crush sleave and its's easier to get the right lb torque but do not over tighten or , sleave needs replaced.
