Is Your Microbiome Telling You What Tastes Good?

  • Most of us probably think that we decide whether or not we like certain foods based on how it tastes. But did you know that your microbiome also plays a role in determining what foods you like? This week on The Doctor's Farmacy I'm joined by Dr. Fred Provenza and he shares why this is.
Fred grew up in Salida, Colorado, working on a ranch and attending school in Wildlife Biology at Colorado State University. He is professor emeritus of Behavioral Ecology in the Department of Wildland Resources at Utah State University where he worked for 35 years, directing an award-winning research group that pioneered an understanding of how learning influences foraging behavior and how behavior links soil, plants, herbivores, and humans. He is the author of three books, including Nourishment: What Animals Can Teach Us About Rediscovering Our Nutritional Wisdom; Foraging Behavior: Managing to Survive in a World of Change; and The Art & Science of Shepherding: Tapping the Wisdom of French Herders (co-authored with Michel Meuret). He has also published over 300 research papers in a wide variety of scientific journals.

Why don't you make it easy to watch the full video by placing a link to it in the description below? At the end it says Watch the Full version but when you tap it brings you to TH-cams next video in cir.

I am not sure about this....I would say more that in childhood and perhaps pregnancy the body is sophisticated and can seek out what the body lacks (your example of children eating dirt for iron!)...but when we eat junk food the body knows it is lacking nutrients, but lacks the sophistication as to 'what' that deficiency is perhaps!? Just as leptin resistance prevents the hypothalamus from recognising the body is satiated (and has too many fat cells). We destroy these proper feedback mechanisms by eating junk....

My take was that Mark was eluding to the fact that food corporations and chefs over time have learned all the tricks to sell more food to maximize profit. So it doesn't matter what the body "knows" or doesn't because it's being hijacked by these foods specifically made, engineered or cooked to inspire hunger.
