For anyone who was confused by this episode; The Devil's mind and body were two separate entities. The body was a physical manifestation of all the hate and rage that The Devil felt for all things, while his mind was what came up with, and executed, the evil plans. The Body was purely The Beast. A hollow shell with no mind. Both the mind and body were trapped on the rock that was being held around the black hole by the artificial gravity field put there by the 'disciples of the light'. The disciples knew that The Devil would find a way to escape so they set up the two vases and destroying them would destroy the gravity field, killing The Devil, mind and body. When the crew came, The Devil's mind possessed Toby, allowing him to posses a physical form. He knew that he had to get off the rock and out of the artificial gravity field in order to survive. As long as his mind was alive, he could live on even if his body died. Once The Devil knew that the Artificial Gravity had been destroyed, he freaked out. He tried everything he could to survive. He tried terrifying the crew on the ship. "I am the rage and the bile and the ferocity! I am the sin and the darkness!!" He refused to die. He was too afraid to, though he would never admit to being afraid. "I shall never die! The thought of me is forever in the bleeding hearts of men! Nothing shall ever destroy me! Nothing!" Then, of course, he was destroyed. It's kind of satisfying though. The Devil, the literal king of all that is evil, the prince of darkness, he who killed millions and tortured them, was terrified of dying and threw the biggest fear-tantrum ever. Like watching a Karen get arrested.
Seeing you being so blown away by this series at this point makes me feel so happy knowing that the show never loses quality, so you have a lot to look forward to.
I’d put Series 5 up there as well, but Series 9 is probably the best season in all of Who, followed very closely by 10. It’s why Capaldi is my favorite Doctor.
@@Jim_The_Fish honestly i feel like series 9 has extremely weak episodes (outside of the finale two parter and certain other exceptions) but is carried by its incredible character writing
Tennant apparently did his big monologue in one take! I love this story. Strong contender for my favourite of all time, and certainly my favourite ensemble cast.
Really nice to see you invested with 10 and Rose. They both did a great job in this episode. The supporting cast were great too especially Zach and Ida.
The first person I see who had the same reaction to this two-parter as I had. It's still one of my very favorite episodes (I count it as one) to this day. There are so many more great episodes there, but this one has a special place in my heart.
Love your enthusiasm with this show! 💙 And yes, I also enjoy how it can go from "cute & funny" to "holy hell what is even happening"... you never know what you're going to get. Can't really talk about favourite 2-parters yet... there are so many, and 3-parters too!

Great rxn. The one thing I thought was missing from the review part of the piece was that I was hoping for a little something of his impression of the Ood (I did enjoy the "throwing up spaghetti" line during part one!)

Tennant does Shakespeare on stage. I imagine he's well trained in doing big monologues. Boh him and Tate. Very impressive indeed.

Totally agree with you about this being best 2 parter thus far. Loads of people rate Empty Child/Doctor Dances above it, but for me this is edges it.
