WOW. Thank you all for so much love in the comments! It might take me a while to go through and read all your words, but I'm looking forward to it! The 11th Doctor, the 11th Hour... Matt Smith has made a very memorable impression so far. He seems quirky and energetic, and I can't wait to get to know this Doctor more. Hope you all enjoyed this first episode with our new Doctor! I'll upload the little minisode reaction video next week 😸Enjoy your upcoming weekend and take care 💜
Don’t worry I won’t give anything away but what great about Matt Smith he like a man in a mask. Being happy and childish but when he has to, he take the mask off and shows the true and darker side of The Doctor. That why the 11th Doctor is my favourite.
This is my favourite era of Who. Many people rave about David Tennant, and he was amazing, but the _feel_ of this era is more to my taste. With hindsight it is possible to divide Doctor Who up into overarching mega-story themes. You have just ended what I like to call "The Era of the Lonely God", because that's who the Doctor was through 9 and 10. War-torn, powerful, yet depressed. The stories are about him travelling through time and affecting things at points in history. Without any spoilers, you should expect the next few seasons to feel more "fairy-tale". I won't tell you what I call this era (spoilers), but fairy-tale or whimsical is a nice description of how it will seem. You can also expect a shift in storytelling. Moffat likes to play with the concept of "time as a character". There's much more wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey to come. The stories are about how _time affects the doctor's life_ rather than how the _doctor_ affects things _throughout time_. An important distinction, but some people can get confused. You can see this in his past episodes (The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, The Girl in the Fireplace, Blink, Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead). Be alert! And have fun. Matt Smith is fabulous :D
This episode originally came out in 2010, so for me and anyone else who watched this live, it really has been fourteen years since fish custard! I was 13 going on 14 when this came out, and if I didn’t know what being swept off your feet felt like before this episode, I certainly did by the time we got to ‘Hello, I’m the Doctor’! I also greatly appreciated little Amelia’s habit of drawing cartoons of herself travelling with the Doctor as someone who had a very similar stack of drawings in her room at that age.
2010.... Woah. It looks so good for being 14 years old, hey! But I guess 14 years old is nothing, really. Gosh, time really does fly! We don't even need a TARDIS and blink and it's gone!
It’s crazy because I started trying fishfingers and custard a few years after this episode came out and it’s gonna be coming up to nearly 10 years now 💀🤣🤣
That's why he's always been my favorite Doctor. And, I think, a big reason I finally started watching the show! I had been aware of it for quite a while but, was never really intrigued by the character of the Doctor until the 11th.
Old(er) actors emphasise the character's youngster-like quirks (like Pertwee's judo and suped-up car or a future doctor's electric guitar), while young actors emphasise the character's wisdom, regret, and gravity of a long life.
I’ve been watching Doctor Who since 1980, so Tom Baker will always be “My Doctor.” However, I think that the best actor to play the Doctor is Matt Smith, for that “old soul look” you said. He really impressed me with his portrayal so much!
This is where Karen Gillan got her big break. Youll probably recognize her as Nebula from the Guardians of the Galaxy films but Doctor Who was where most of us were introduced to her
With me at least, that's situation with every Doctor Who actor. Apart from Catherine Tate I think and I might've heard about Peter in 'The thick of it'. They can't really be well known, because then most peoples first thoughts when they see the actors first series won't be "THE doctor", but "That character from that other show, as the new Doctor".
@@Jumpyman_thegamerYT Oh, yeah. Forgot about that. Maybe THAT was the same deal with Peter, but I'm sure I also knew about him being in 'The thick of it' at the time.
Matt Smith immediately comes in and makes me believe hes the doctor. He hits the ground running and i think absolutely nails it. I also like how hes in ten's rags but sheds both the clothes and sonic screwdriver by the end of the episode. He had such big shoes to fill after Tennant left the show and this first episode had to do so much but also kept it simple. I can imagine the pressure on Matt Smiths shoulders but also Steven Moffat who took over showrunning to see if they could do this after Tennant & Davis left plus the fact people didnt like Smith when he was first announced just like Tennant was in the beginning (Tennant even talked about googling himself when he was announced and saw a lot of negative comments) Also apparently the tardis flying over London on the outside is the render from the tardis at the end of the episode which i think was a slight goof. It also kinda hurts seeing Ten's Tardis on the inside on fire. To build Matt Smith's inside the tardis (which was absolutely massive) they had to take away the torchwood set to have that space. Also also best line ''Blimey, Get a girlfriend Jeff''
It really is the start of a brand new era. When David Tennant took over from Christopher Eccleston, literally everything else on screen & behind the scenes stayed the same. This time around, it's a whole new cast and a whole new production team. The new showrunner (taking over from Russell T. Davies) is Steven Moffat, who wrote arguably some of the best episodes of the first four series: - Gas mask zombies. - Clockwork robots. - Weeping Angels. - Vashta Nerada / River Song. Suffice it to say you've got a crazy ride to look forward to! 😃
Even the TARDIS remained the same when Tennant took over from Eccleston, though the control room became brighter with Tennant is the main difference, the exterior remained the exact same, the sonic remained except the slight casing change in Series 3 after it got destroyed in the hospital. So yeah basically all the same. Everything with Matt is different, exterior and console entirely new, sonic is new, new writers and showrunner.
@@thecoffeemainiak5400 Series 6 was a massive upgrade in terms of popularity, some of the episodes there smashed out Series 4's figures heavily, though that's due to how Moffat did the marketing for it and it became immediately available on BBC america on airing rather than just later re-runs.
“Oh, so she’s gonna wait there five minutes and he’s gonna come back for her?” Yyyyyyyyup, that’s _exactly_ how it’s gonna happen. No complications here, no ma’am! 😆
Steven Moffat said this was the hardest episode he ever wrote in his tenure as showrunner for Doctor Who, and honestly it makes sense. From a screenwriting standpoint this episode is absolutely jam packed and is so well written, while also setting up the 11th Doctor, Amy Pond, and a ton of other things.
It was also after Tennant and filling that role was a massive undertaking due to his popularity, people thought the show was done without him, Steven had to put out a banger beginning episode for it to work and he pulled it off. Though Matt filmed this episode in a later bloc, his first episode he actually filmed was the first 2 parter of series 5, not spoiling obviously but it’s still good.
@@chazo1367 keep in mind episodes 2-5 were already filmed by the time The Eleventh Hour was filmed so Moffat had built up rapport with the rest of production.
He did an exceptional job. The Smith era is far from my favourite but this is an incredibly tight script and a great demonstration of his vision for the show.
@@unclekarl5219 true. This is also how Eleventh Hour was so good at the start because it being filmed later let Matt get used to playing as 11 and define him
My favourite trivia about this is that the episode was originally, and for the longest time, going to be called The Doctor Returns. According to Steven Moffat, this was the case until 'some smart arse' pointed out that it was a direct continuation from the end of the previous, and there was nothing for him to return from.
5:00 “Am I people? Trust me, I’m the Doctor.” The first glimpse of the kind of magic Matt Smith is capable of as the Doctor: a young face but a gaze that is incredibly old and incredibly kind. He has this ability to transition effortlessly and believably from youthful and scatterbrained to “ancient Time Lord bearing the pain the anger and the kindness from lifetimes of losses and loves.”
This isn't the first time he's been scatterbrained after a regeneration. In Classic Who, he messed up a computer repair on a starship. He'd just regenerated.
This is one of my favorite episode of the entire series. "Hello. I'm The Doctor." was a great way to introduce Matt Smith's Doctor. He's definitely my favorite.
As a long time doctor who fan it usually takes a few episodes for me to get acclimated to a new Doctor. It took Matt Smith doing the “I am the Doctor” speech to the Atraxi that had me 100 percent locked in for him.
I was skeptical of Matt Smith, but he won me over with two words--"Basically, run." I love this cast and this era SO MUCH. I can't wait for you to get to know them.
Caitlin Blackwood, who plays young Amelia and Karen Gillan, who plays older Amy are cousins. But they didn't know each other and met for the 1st time on set
I don't think I can oversell how much I love the 11th Doctor's theme song. Murray Smith did a hell of a job with 'I Am The Doctor', it's so full of whimsy and wonder. Matched with this introduction to the new Doctor through the eyes of a child and the new Tardis console room that could be out of a children's book with the eclectic controls, it really was a magical time.
The woman playing Amy was one of the seers in the Fires of Pompeii. And young Amelia is the real life cousin of smy, played by Karen Gillian. Karen was AWESOME in the first 2 of the new Jumanji movies. She was a cross between Amy and Zena Princess Warrior.
Oh, I have been waiting for this. Eleven? Brilliant. As soon as he said 'I'm the Doctor. Basically... run' that was him cemented as the the Doctor for me. Even the Tardis was brilliant. Geronimo!
Matt Smith is amazing as the Doctor: we have seen his quirky, fun side, in this episode, which continues, but he also shows incredible depth and somehow manages to show how the Doctor is very old and has seen and done some seriously dark things. Also, Steven Moffat (who wrote some of the best episodes - The Girl in the Fireplace, Blink, Silence in the Library etc.) is now showrunner and he comes up with some great storylines.
And yes, that is Academy Award winning actress Olivia Colman. Who would be later be described by Steven Moffat as his biggest regret, in regards to under-utilising her.
Jeff is played by the British actor Tom Hopper best known for his roles as Sir Percival in the BBC Drama series Merlin, and as Luther Hargreeves in the Umbrella Academy.
This is the fastest that any Doctor won me over. He already had his "I'm the Doctor" moment. I personally feel like some Doctors haven't had that in their entire run.
Easily my favourite opening story of any Doctor - it's got such a lovely whimsical fairytale air about it - especially the first half with the joung Amelia. Hope you loved it too.
IIRC they wanted Matt Smith to wear something 'cool' (I think someone mentioned 'space pirate') But Matt's research led him to the idea of 'wacky professor/Einstein' as his take on The Doctor. The tweed and bowtie were his idea and it really works!
So, a couple fun facts, one the Doctir's line to Amy "just believe me for 20 minutes" is also directed at the audience because Moffat knew many views would be reluctant to accept Tennent's follow-up, the bulk of the episode takes place in 2008, which is the present day that Martha came from so all this happened while the Master was campaigning, and as off the last scene set in 2010, the show's "present day" is decisively synced with the irl time of release for the first time since Series 1 episode 3.
Some say your first doctor will always be YOUR doctor, not true, THIS is my doctor, i love all who came before and the one who comes after, but this is the BEST doctor there ever where, why? Cos "he is just a mad man with a box"
I am done binging your videos now 😂 Finally, the doctor that i saw in ads promoting doctor who back in 2014… Matt Smith would technically be *my* doctor, I suppose.
Matt Smith’s opening episode is the best one ever! Most Doctors take a few episodes to warm up. Matt is perfectly in character from the first shot. So much fun! Loved watching your reaction to it!
New opening. New logo. New Tardis. New sonic screwdriver. New companion. And a New Doctor. My favorite era of Doctor Who started here. Oh, And Bow-Ties are cool.
I never thought I could find a Doctor to match Tom Baker, but he hit it out of the park, and I adore him. Matt is an excellent actor. He’s now just turned 41. His 2 biggest roles other than this one is Prince Philip in the 1st two seasons of The Crown and he is currently playing Daemon Targaryen in House of the Dragon.
Welcome to S5 and the 11th Doctor - I love this series and I remember the excitement when I was a kid getting to know Matt Smith's Doctor! What an amazing entrance basically scaring the Atraxi off Earth xD
"Hello, I'm The Doctor. Basically, run." Epic! In my opinion, The Eleventh Hour is the best first episode to a new series and to introducing a new Doctor. Now we begin The 11th Doctor era and The Moffat era of Doctor Who. You're going to love it. Matt Smith, Karen Gillian, Arthur Darvill and Steven Moffat did an incredible job with this episode. Can't wait to see you react to all of them. Geronimo! 😃
This is actually the episode I recommend to friends who want to check out Doctor Who. Most people either recommend Blink (which I don't because it's so different from most episodes and has almost no actual Doctor in it) or Rose to start at the beginning (but that one's a little cheesy and low budget to really suck people in). People I know who watched this one first and then went back to Eccleston get it better and seem to end up Who fans.
I believe the Bow Tie is Matt Smith's personal nod to Patrick Troughton, the Second Doctor, from the Classic Who series. *Some* of the mannerisms too, but only some. Something old. something new.
I have never clicked so fast. As much as i loved DT, i really loved MS. Geronimo!!! Also, the head writer for Doctor Who changed too, so new doctor, new companion, new theme, new logo, new everything!
After watching the Classic series and growing up on the 9th and 10th Doctors, I still think the 11th Doctor is my favourite. He really encompasses the old man in a young man's body and I love the Dark Fairytale vibes of this season.
As a Scot, the line "You're Scottish, fry something" cracks me up every time. :) So glad you enjoyed this first outing for "11" I've always loved this episode and Matt Smith knocks it out of the park in his first appearance as The Doctor. As you say, everything from the new Doctor, new graphics, new music arrangement, new TARDIS, new showrunner in Steven Moffat all make it feel like this is a brand new era and I'm really excited to follow your journey - happy travelling, Jules! :)
Let alone the doctors I can never choose who is the best it's impossible, the companions from the New Who are also always battling in my head but again I can never choose still, but I can hands down say Amy Pond has the best companion meets the doctor for the first time episode.
If you notice this story is the dynamic of a child meeting the doctor at different points in their life as he jumps from one to the other immediately. And the girl/woman feels as if she has known him all her life. Sound familiar? Madame de Pompadour from the Girl in the Fireplace is the original Amy Pond, written several years earlier by Moffatt who also wrote this and became the showrunner here.
Yes the similarities are unmistakeable though both episodes are excellent and no complaints from me. Also, Moffat does have a thing for putting children in his episodes, especially little girls.
Matt's exit speech is one of legends. The episodes that crush it, crush hard! Every single arc is just amazing. As much as I adore David, Matt kicks it up. My favorite is still to come.
@@julesreacts no worries an never a spoiler. It was more 'Matt affirming' then anything else. My wife has a picture of her hugging Matt. He is her all time fav.
Welcome to the majestic tale of a madman with a box. Matt Smith grew up when the show wasn't on so after being cast went back and watched a load of modern and classic Who and wrote fanfiction stories to find his Doctor's voice
@@mufinboi975 she actually dragged us before it closed down to Cardiff where they had the doctor who experience a good day out but sadly they closed it down didn't make sense cause it was packed fully booked all the time.
Welcome to a bold new era Jules! Series 5 is my favourite season of New Who and one of my favourite eras of the show as a whole. Before it commenced Steven Moffat said that it would feel like a fairy tale and that's an aspect that I absolutely adore. I think that this is the greatest debut story for a new Doctor and I know I'm not alone. Between the fairy tale feel of the Doctor being little Amelia's imaginary friend and the timey-wiminess of the plot, it all just feels so special. Speaking of timey-wimey, just like 'The Girl in the Fireplace', Moffat once again took inspiration from 'The Time Traveller's Wife'. I think what really sells the magic of it all though is the score, with composer Murray Gold being one of the few people to stay on from the previous era. In my opinion, this is where he really steps up his game, especially 'Amy's Theme' and the Doctor's two themes - 'I am the Doctor' and 'The Madman with a Box'. On a personal note, this season also resonated with me because it came at a time when I too was in a state of transition. In 2010 I was in my first year of uni and I was really starting to discover who I was as a person, just like the new Doctor. I think that's why everything made such an impact on me. I fell in love with Eleven's costume from the moment I saw it and quickly made it part of my style. To this day I love bow ties, braces and tweed jackets, because as we all know, bow ties are cool. Amy also, uh, awakened something in me and to this day I have a thing for Karen Gillan. 😅 Speaking of which, last week I talked about Matt Smith, so now it's time for the Girl Who Waited, Karen Gillan. She'd previously appeared in The Fires of Pompeii as a soothsayer, but after Doctor Who would find broader fame for playing Nebula in the MCU and Ruby Roundhouse in the new Jumanji movies, among other big roles. Oh and fun fact: This marks the return of the St. John's Ambulance sticker on the TARDIS, which was part of its original design but quickly disappeared. Also, this is the third time that a newly regenerated Doctor stole their initial outfit from a hospital locker. The Third and Eighth Doctors did the same thing. The crack in Amelia's wall was inspired by a crack in the bedroom wall of Steven Moffat's son. Finally, the scene where the Doctor tries all of that food was inspired by a scene from a Whinnie the Pooh book. And yes, since then fish fingers and custard has become an official delicacy of the Doctor Who fandom. I'm so excited to see what you think of the rest of the season!
Ashley!! This was so lovely to read. Thank you. I love how deeply you can relate to this series and it would bring you back to those earlier years for sure. I have shows and songs that do that to me, too. It's a funny feeling isn't it? Like in one moment we are back there... I really like series 5 so far. It seems magical and also beautifully done, from a "design" point of view - not too sure how to word it. It's just very nice looking 😊😊
@@julesreacts I know what you mean Jules, I've always loved the look and feel of Sereies 5. The one thing I'm not 100% sold on is the TARDIS interior. I like it, but it kind of feels too over done to me.
Transition can always be a bit hard. I really love this episode. It’s one of the first I ever showed my kids. They still yell “bad bad beans” and if we have a dr who party vegan “fish sticks and custard” (really we use vegan fish sticks and vanilla pudding. American) make an appearance.
For me this episode and season holds a very special place in my heart. I had joined Doctor who during 2006 (Series 2) and David was my first Doctor, and while I had gone back and seen Christopher’s season retroactively, David’s regeneration into Matt was the first regeneration I watched live! And I was genuinely terrified (in a good way) about how different the show would be with RTD, David and the Production Team all changing and how this was being marketed as a brand new era. The only constants are certain people like Moffat and some other writers and Murray Gold. And for me this episode absolutely knocked it out of the park. Matt, Karen, Arthur and Moffat all bring their A Game to this opening episode and it hooked me straight away in ways that I never expected and the moment Matt appears in his classic tweed jacket! Ahhh pure nostalgia!!!
I’d never really thought about it until reading your comment, but my first regeneration I saw live was Matt Smith into the 12th, and 12 is easily my favorite Doctor. I wonder if there’s a connection lol My roommates got me into the show around the time Series 6 was airing, I think. I’m pretty sure Series 7 was the first one I saw as it aired. I started from the 9th Doctor and kept on from there!
Imagine how terrified (in a good way) all us old fans were when Russell brought it back in 2005. The excitement & the anticipation! When Chris Eccleston said 'Run' to Rose I knew we were in for a ride. I feel the same at the end of this with Matt's 'Basically run'. I like most of The Doctors, but the energy from Matt in this episode was amazing 😊
Young Amelia and her are cousins. Something to be aware of is Matt's Fairy Tale era. It can get very dark at times - "why change it?" "Too fairy tale" and it says a lot. Tom Baker was more Gothic horror done scifi. Matt was a great change from Tennant and also this is the time when River Song (The Library) comes into play and shines as brightly and Matt and Karen.
Not my 1st doctor but Matt Smith is my favourite Doctor! After 2 Doctors that were very human it was beautiful to see a very quirky, very alien Doctor. I hope you enjoy his run as much as I did 🙌
Can’t wait for you to continue this series and many more. Thank you for your content please keep going. It’s lovely watching someone react to something for the first time others have already enjoyed. You almost get to relive it all again
I started watching your reactions to Dr. Who a few days ago and started binging. The Matt Smith ERA was my favorite. Tennant was second. I saw Matt Smith first because I started watching on the recommendation from a friend with His Era. They made me fall in love with Dr. Who. I think you will love the journey!❤
The first time Matt Smith was on the cover of the radio times. My friend said he's to young. I said look at him he's the Doctor. And he knocked it out the park. What a great actor and Dr. One of the best. I hope you all love him as much as I and my son did.
The music “Next Stop Everywhere” was retitled “I am the Doctor”. Murray Gold got big budgets for music. He started his beautiful orchestrations as computer generated creations. Every year his budget grew. By now he had full orchestras for every show.
Karen Gillan went on to in a couple of the Avengers movies as well as the Jumanji sequels. Just watched Matt Smith in Last Night in Soho where he plays a thoroughly nasty character who just happens to be a brilliant ballroom dancer. It also involves an element of time travel sort of.
Welcome to Steven Moffat's run on Doctor Who! Amy is the third of four characters that Moffat based on Claire from The Time Traveler's Wife, a favorite novel of his, and mine. "Meanwhile in the TARDIS" is the name of two minisodes set after episodes 1 and 5, respectively. Hope you'll react to those too!
Originally, David Tennant was asked to stay on for this series. The original draft had a terminally injured 10th Doctor crash land and regenerate in front of young Amelia at the start of the episode, with the series then looping back around into how he got there. Moffat has said in the past that he didn't originally intend to change all of the aesthetic - had David or Catherine stayed on he would have kept the opening titles, sonic, TARDIS prop & set the same as it was. It was only once the main cast chose to leave they decided to redo everything.
You have now officially met my Doctor. I don't think I need to explain why I fell in love with him immediately. Matt just absolutely nailed it right out of the gate, and his performance only improves from here.
Yeah, series 5 was intended as a soft reboot, a new entry point for new viewers, there are a few of those over the years, of note here, this was a passover of showrunners, with Russel T Davis handign the reigns over to Steven Moffat. This would also be why the specials were listed as part of series 4 even though past speciasl counted as part of the following series, Fun fact: the new TARDIS exterior is inspired by the TARDIS from the Peter Cushing films, there are a few things they took from those films, also the interior is inspired by nautical ships, with the exterior's lantern being an old ship lantern. And to be fair to the Doctor's bad piloting in this episode, for the 12 year miss; we now know that the TARDIS is meant for 6 pilots, half of the controls probably blew up _and_ the console room is still on, frankly the fact that he ended up in Leadworth is an achievement. The 2 years at the end is less defendable, but it is a new console he had to get used to.
This episode really shows how Doctor Who can continuously reinvent itself every once in a while. It’s sort of like comic books, where the main continuity continues, but with a different creative team and a whole new vibe.
18:45 there he is, the trumpets, the warning, first episode of the new season and Matt does terrific. the doctor is the one person to mess with. (i love his theme and the swell) ooo the chills
Great reaction, they were going for a fresh start with this era after such a successful one with the tenth. Personally he's one of my favourite Doctors of all time. Can't wait to see what you think of him as the series goes on.
I absolutely LOVE how new it feels! I'm so glad they did this - everything is different. It really helps see things in a new light, after losing a beloved Doctor 💜
Hi Jules 🙋♂... Awesome reaction. I told you you'd get through the heartache. No one will ever replace Christopher Eccleston or David Tennant, but that, of course, doesn't mean there's no room for someone else in the series, and Matt Smith certainly does prove himself, that he belongs here, and he shines brightly in the role, so can look forward to many great new adventures for the foreseeable future.
When planning the 11th Doctor Steven Moffat originally intended them to be a swashbuckling type, a bit like a pirate. I suspect this is the reason the new Tardis has the nautical elements to the design. Anyway after that they cast Matt Smith and this is the result. Moffat once rambled at length wondering how much of that chaotic energy was how Matt chose to portray the Doctor and how much was just Matt himself being a force of utter chaos.
When Matt Smith was first announced to be the Doctor I vividly remember everyone just tore him to shreds, and I mean *harsh* "What's with his weird face?" "Why doesn't he have eyebrows?" "He's a child." "The Next doctor will be a fetus" etc etc etc... But he took it on and... He's my favorite of the new Doctors. This first episode he is still very much transitioning from who David Tennant was, as he comes into his own. I do remember being momentarily disappointed when such a young man was chosen. I was really hoping for an older actor. In my head I saw someone like Jonathan Pryce or Hugh Laurie from House. Older than either Chris or David. Someone who would stand there and you would just feel the age and wisdom in their eyes... Of course, as we'll see, Matt Smith is an incredible actor. The refresh helped some people to really accept moving forward. If it had carried on as it was for the previous four years I think it might have been much more difficult. It helped that Smith's era started when everything switched to HD TV. It forced them to go in, redo the interior of the TARDIS, change up things... They tweaked the TARDIS exterior to have a more classic/retro color like it did in the classic series, new intro, new font. All of that stuff. Also the 11th Doctor has an absolutely banging theme song. So noble and heroic. I'm really tickled that you liked this. I am so excited to take this journey with you through what is arguably my favorite series in the new show.
I love how this season makes itself different by changing the tone of the show from a gritty and sad soap opera in space to a childhood fairytale about a madman in a box who becomes the imaginary friend of a little scottish girl with no parents. Like you mentioned the camera direction and the lighting are done much more magically than before but so has the music and set design. Even how the episodes are written feels like a fairytale. Something this season does a lot is use the perspective of children to show the magic and scariness of the universe, physically putting the camera at eye level of a child to show us how they see and think about things. When The Doctor tells Amelia “everything will be fine” and “I’ll be back in 5 minutes” she thinks he is lying to make her feel better because those are things real children worry about and I just love moments like that. Even if there isn’t a child in the story, the writers make an effort to make the grown ups show their inner child like how The Doctor said he could “fix Amy from growing up” after she said she couldn’t go with him.
The first time I saw this episode I didn’t pick up on the fact she was getting married. I thought the wedding dress was there for the same reason as the dolls - because she was obsessed with the Doctor and she’d be like a stalker companion lol. That would have been awesome.
You’re gonna absolutely love Matt Smiths era of doctor who, they’re far more fairytale than David Tennants and wholeheartedly just as amazing. The cracks in the wall and the girl who waited storylines are fantastic too!
For the record, when the Doctor eats the fish fingers and custard in this episode, the fish fingers are actually breaded coconut cakes during this scene. I however remained ignorant of this until after I actually tried real fish fingers with cold tinned custard. It's an odd combination, but a surprisingly satisfying synergy of savory and sweet. Definitely worth a try if only to indulge your curiosity in how it tastes. ;)
So excited! I dropped everything to watch this. I happy this episode got a thumbs-up from you and you mentioned how quirky the Eleventh Doctor is. That's my favourite aspect of his personality.
You’ve seen the previous doctor that took the UK by storm. now it’s time for the show to go international and gain an American audience. And it’s obvious why the shows popularity continued under smith. This is such a tight script and a masterpiece in terms of selling the audience on the doctor. “Just believe in me for 20 minutes”, this episode had the monumental task of following the previous era of the show, and it was able to introduce its bold new era with flying colours. What better way to introduce the youngest ever doctor than as an imaginary friend that allows the new companion to return to her childhood!
Hi Juliette. As many people have already commented both here and on Patreon, this really is the start of a new era for Doctor Who. With new people both in front of and behind the camera I suppose it might feel a little strange for some viewers at first, but both the new Doctor and his companion are great and for me they're just as good as the Tennant & Tate pairing. Hopefully you'll feel the same. As a new beginning I thought this episode did a great job. The way they introduced Amy was very well done, the mystery of the crack in the wall instantly had me hooked, and we got to see the new Doctor's personality take shape as the events of the episode unfolded. I was already liking him, but once he said the line "Hello, I'm the Doctor... Basically, RUN" I thought "Ok, this Doctor is definitely going to be a good one!" Thanks for the excellent video Juliette 💜 Have yourself an awesome rest of the week!
Neil 💜 I love that it feels so NEW! I think it's so needed, especially after Mr Tennant. He and Donna were just everything to me, and I really do appreciate how "different" things are as it's been really helpful to have me separate my thoughts and feelings from them and to embrace our new Doctor. Who is rather cool, I might say! And yes - the RUN! I love how they do little nods and throwbacks like that. It reinforces that the Doctor really is the SAME. It's him - the same fellow we've known and loved. He's just different.... Have a wonderful weekend, Neil 🥰
@@julesreacts thing is, we all thought that Ten made us cry but Eleven will reshape your concept of internal suffering 😊 it's gonna be awesome, I promise
You are in for a treat with Matt he had such big shoes to fill and did an incredible job ❤
I'm so glad you're covering the minisodes, there are quite a few in the Eleventh Doctor era.
"Everything feels so new and different"
Yeah, it's not just the Doctor, but the show itself "regenerates" with each new actor.
Nooooo… not 14 years 😱😱😱🇬🇧
You stop that right now 😂 don't make me think that
@@julesreacts hope you looked up the minisodes!
It’s crazy because I started trying fishfingers and custard a few years after this episode came out and it’s gonna be coming up to nearly 10 years now 💀🤣🤣
11 has that old soul look in his eyes. He may look young but if you look at his eyes, you can tell he has seen a lot. Very fitting for the Doctor.
That’s why he was cast. Steven Moffat loved the whole old man in a young man’s body aspect that Smith brought to the audition
He really impressed me with his portrayal so much!
especially when he gets angry and you feel the anger of an old warrior just bubble up to the surface before it simmers back down into "The Doctor"
This is where Karen Gillan got her big break. Youll probably recognize her as Nebula from the Guardians of the Galaxy films but Doctor Who was where most of us were introduced to her
@@deathswitch2404 Karen Gillan also is in the Jumanji remake sequel films with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Kevin Hart and Jack Black.
Karen also appears in 'The Fires of Pompeii' episode with Catherine Tate. Karen is one of the soothsayers, who are part of the Sibylline Sisterhood.
@@Jumpyman_thegamerYT Oh, yeah. Forgot about that. Maybe THAT was the same deal with Peter, but I'm sure I also knew about him being in 'The thick of it' at the time.
@@JoeThornhill Peter was also in Torchwood Children of Earth.
The 11th Doctor's theme is such a banger.
That simpler percussion and bass line rhythm really gives it such great drive.
I can imagine the pressure on Matt Smiths shoulders but also Steven Moffat who took over showrunning to see if they could do this after Tennant & Davis left plus the fact people didnt like Smith when he was first announced just like Tennant was in the beginning (Tennant even talked about googling himself when he was announced and saw a lot of negative comments)
Also apparently the tardis flying over London on the outside is the render from the tardis at the end of the episode which i think was a slight goof.
Davies) is Steven Moffat, who wrote arguably some of the best episodes of the first four series:
- Gas mask zombies.
- Clockwork robots.
- Weeping Angels.
- Vashta Nerada / River Song.
Suffice it to say you've got a crazy ride to look forward to! 😃
Yeah, it really does seem so different but I love it!! I feel it's needed. Like a little refresh!
@@julesreacts If i remember right, the show got a bigger budget for season 5 which is why the quality might seem different.
“Oh, so she’s gonna wait there five minutes and he’s gonna come back for her?”
Yyyyyyyyup, that’s _exactly_ how it’s gonna happen.
Didn't know that. That's pretty fun fact.
Wow, it seems that change really came at the... eleventh hour
glad they changed that lmao
We need such smart arses in our lives.
That was a tribute to the 10th I thought.
he got me by yeeting the buttered bread at the cat "and stay out". I showered my screen in tea that day back in 2010
Caitlin Blackwood, who plays young Amelia and Karen Gillan, who plays older Amy are cousins. But they didn't know each other and met for the 1st time on set
And Caitlin is now the same age that Karen was when she filmed this!
They never met before? Were they 1st or 2nd cousins?

That is so cool playing those roles together must’ve been really special
@@Miscellaneous_Minx Look up Caitlin Blackwood 2024 if you want to feel old!
Karen is a real hottie.
Oh, I have been waiting for this. Eleven? Brilliant. As soon as he said 'I'm the Doctor. Basically... run' that was him cemented as the the Doctor for me. Even the Tardis was brilliant. Geronimo!
Most. Doctor. Line. Ever!

One of the best “first doctor episodes” imo. Great intro for Eleven. Fish fingers and custard here we go!
IIRC they wanted Matt Smith to wear something 'cool' (I think someone mentioned 'space pirate') But Matt's research led him to the idea of 'wacky professor/Einstein' as his take on The Doctor. The tweed and bowtie were his idea and it really works!
That's so cool to know!! It absolutely works!
Fascinating!
Well done getting through them haha! Nice work 🙏
Matt Smith’s opening episode is the best one ever! Most Doctors take a few episodes to warm up. Matt is perfectly in character from the first shot. So much fun! Loved watching your reaction to it!
Thank you!! I'm so glad you enjoyed!
I saw someone (I think it was Failwhale34) describe these showrunner changeovers perfectly: So new and different but yet so familiar at the same time
I am a bit worried about failwhale , he hasn’t uploaded for over 2 months
Agreed. Except for the change to Chibnall. That was just different. And the change back to RTD was just… well, the same as earlier RTD
Hes one of my favorite doctors.. every doctor had a thing the actor brought to the role...and Matt's was his youth and power in his speeches
Matt Smith is the doctor i grew up on he was my first doctor and will always have my heart.
Welcome to S5 and the 11th Doctor - I love this series and I remember the excitement when I was a kid getting to know Matt Smith's Doctor! What an amazing entrance basically scaring the Atraxi off Earth xD
"Hello, I'm The Doctor. Basically, run."
Epic!
Geronimo! 😃
My favourite Doctor ‘saying’
This is actually the episode I recommend to friends who want to check out Doctor Who. Most people either recommend Blink (which I don't because it's so different from most episodes and has almost no actual Doctor in it) or Rose to start at the beginning (but that one's a little cheesy and low budget to really suck people in). People I know who watched this one first and then went back to Eccleston get it better and seem to end up Who fans.
Agreed 💯. So entertaining
Matt Smith was fairly unknown at the time. He's actually the youngest actor to play the Doctor. 26 years old when he was cast.
When I introduce someone to Doctor Who, I show them two episodes: “Blink” is the first; “The Eleventh Hour” is the second.
I'm binging this playlist and just watched the last episode. I am fighting for my life through the tears but super excited going into 11!
I believe the Bow Tie is Matt Smith's personal nod to Patrick Troughton, the Second Doctor, from the Classic Who series.
*Some* of the mannerisms too, but only some. Something old. something new.
Something borrowed, something blue!
One of my favourite names for The Doctor is definitely "The madman with a box" ❤
I remember watching this when it first released, everyone was so sad about David leaving and ready to be disappointment with Matt but he smashed it
Yeah, he sure has!!
Let alone the doctors I can never choose who is the best it's impossible,
the companions from the New Who are also always battling in my head but again I can never choose still, but I can hands down say Amy Pond has the best companion meets the doctor for the first time episode.
"Hello, I'm the Doctor"
"Basically... run."
"That was 2 Years AGO."
One of the best first episode for a new doctor ever. Matt Smith did an amazing job..
He really did!
I love seeing you seeing Amy Pond. This is going to be so fun.
I really like her a lot!
After the brilliance displayed by David Tennant, everyone wondered how Matt Smith would be able to fill his shoes.
This. This is how.
Just a gentle reminder that I read the comments! I would prefer that we focus on the episode uploaded, rather than what will happen in the future :)

Speaking of which, last week I talked about Matt Smith, so now it's time for the Girl Who Waited, Karen Gillan.
I have a replica of 11's screwdriver. It is SO fun to wave around at things, it brings me much joy.
I can't help it. I love the classic TARDIS looks
I wonder if there’s a connection lol
My roommates got me into the show around the time Series 6 was airing, I think. I’m pretty sure Series 7 was the first one I saw as it aired. I started from the 9th Doctor and kept on from there!

Ooh yes, I would love to see those!! Thank you for the reminder 💜
Episode 1 of Meanwhile… before The Beast Below, episode 2 of Meanwhile… after Flesh and Stone. You’re welcome!
You've met the older Amelia Pond before (Karen Gillan) she played the part of one of the cult of seer's in the Dr and Donna episode set in Pompeii.
“Trust me, I’m the Doctor” *sobs uncontrollably* and the best one! 🥺😭
Yeah, series 5 was intended as a soft reboot, a new entry point for new viewers, there are a few of those over the years, of note here, this was a passover of showrunners, with Russel T Davis handign the reigns over to Steven Moffat. This would also be why the specials were listed as part of series 4 even though past speciasl counted as part of the following series,
Fun fact: the new TARDIS exterior is inspired by the TARDIS from the Peter Cushing films, there are a few things they took from those films, also the interior is inspired by nautical ships, with the exterior's lantern being an old ship lantern.
Moffat once rambled at length wondering how much of that chaotic energy was how Matt chose to portray the Doctor and how much was just Matt himself being a force of utter chaos.
i LOVE the speech the doctor gives to the Atraxi.... "basically... RUN"
The 11th doctor has his own dark side
Steven Moffet also story tells on another level stories within stories.
The line on the screen in the Tardis at the end was the crack. It's still there...
Oh, Amelia Pond. The Girl Who Waited.
Yeah you are gonna need tissues Jules :)
Oh, and yeah, bowties are cool ;)
Surely no more tears for a little while 🥹🥹 I need to give you all a break from ol' weepy here!
The first time I saw this episode I didn’t pick up on the fact she was getting married. I thought the wedding dress was there for the same reason as the dolls - because she was obsessed with the Doctor and she’d be like a stalker companion lol. That would have been awesome.
I did have that thought, too 🤣🤣 that would actually be a really interesting companion to have (for us, anyway haha)
You’re gonna absolutely love Matt Smiths era of doctor who, they’re far more fairytale than David Tennants and wholeheartedly just as amazing. The cracks in the wall and the girl who waited storylines are fantastic too!
So glad you made it to Matt Smith. Dude is an absolute beast actor and one of the best humans ever 👌
My kids and I fell in love with Matt, can't believe it's already nostalgia
Basically, RUN" I thought "Ok, this Doctor is definitely going to be a good one!"
Thanks for the excellent video Juliette 💜 Have yourself an awesome rest of the week!
Have a wonderful weekend, Neil 🥰
the youngest doctor but look at his eyes. they are so old. for the first time you can really imagine him as this old, old alien entity
WHY does that break my heart 😭😭😭😭
@@julesreacts thing is, we all thought that Ten made us cry but Eleven will reshape your concept of internal suffering 😊 it's gonna be awesome, I promise
