Good video to explain the process. A valuable tool to consider when installing sidewalk slabs like this is the SlabSetters tool. It was designed exactly for this kind of project.

Why no mortar bed or mortar joints?

Never understood weed control under sub base sand and slabs? Impossible to penetrate.

This is great for a shed base, but it will move over time if laid on sand.. better to use a concrete base, reinforced with mesh, for a patio, then pave over..

He's building a patio for light use not a multi-storey carpark.

No slab should be laid without mortar...they will sink...here speaks the voice of experience...do everyrhing advised here, but clear a central hollow per slab, and add mortar...it also does advise depth
    ...160mm...just over 6 inches..

Hi, how do you “clear a central hollow”?

    No mortar bed.
Don't expect this patio to still be there after the first rainstorm.

My patio is on sharp sand and is still in good condition 7 years later.

Doesn't even tell you the depth of hardcore and sand. Not very useful at all.

I'm sorry..this is a poor way of doing that.. For a start, he didn't show how to take any movement or rock out of the tiles, secondly, that sand will move in time. The sanded area needs compacted more and the sand he used was to fine. If you can manage to get the stone area as flat as possible, and then use a light coat of quarry dust, it is a far better job.. Better still, if you then mix a 5-6 sand and 1cement, you are actually better floating the slabs on a thin mortar mix..they will not move one inch when the settle in...
