    It makes a change watching someone who actually understands how to lay a sub base properly.

    Hi thank you for your very helpful videos. I'm in the midst of digging up for my patio. Planning on a 100mm MOT1 fill. Can you advise how many bulk bags I may need? They usually come in 800 -900kgs i gather. Much appreciated

    Did you remember to turn the compactor on?

    Hmmm, I wasn't sure whether to put some kind of edging in to keep the lawn/beds back. Also unsure whether to dig all of the turf out first and then dig down where the path will be. Decisions decisions!

    Question, if i may. How do you determine that you have dug say 160mm evenly over your area. I get that you can gauge it at the sides easily, enough, but what about the middle or say 25% in from the edge? Thanks

    Hello Tim this is probably a silly question and I'm probably going to get a lot of hate for this but could you use a tarpaulin as a membrane? I've been watching for a few years however I'm still binge watching all of your videos.

      Depends really, it needs to be permeable to water especially if under gravel or block paving. Under a path or patio it might be fine to be honest as it is more to do with stopping the subbase working its way down into soil.

    Does it matter what order you put weed control on before of after the type 1 sub base

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Before usually as it is more of a geotextile. You want the mortar on the type 1 really.

    Hi, great video. I have a very small square garden (4m by 5m). I would like to take up the grass to lay a small deck step and prepare for artifical grass. How do I mark up the wooden pegs to show how deep I have to dig down and level?

    Hy, I'm jus planning on my patio. I dug out and have approx 150-200mm depth. Before I pour hardcore over can I whacker plate the soil or will it jus sink

    • @chrisnorris1079
      @chrisnorris1079 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's generally a good idea to use the compactor on the soil before laying the hardcore, if the soil is really soft then it will indicate you need to dig out more... if the mot1(scalpings) is going to be too deep then consider putting down rubble such as broken bricks etc then the sub-base on top of that.

  • @goodguysalwayswintruthprev7460

    Hi Mate, was this type 1 MOT sub base?

  • @supermario1982171
    @supermario1982171 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    so trying to work how deep should you go ?

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Depends on what you want the final height to be. 100m or 4'' of the sub base is needed, then your mortar bed will be around 30-50mm plus the thickness of your stone. Therefore if you need it at the same height as what was there before then 170mm would be best.

      so much overkill in you depth, its a garden path with average foot weight of up to 100kgs just needs 50 mm of agrigates and 40mm of paving sand . .its not a truck driveway your cost could have been halved and still have a long lasting job

    • @learnsomethingneweveryday1539

      @@hanshoogendyk2203 thanks for this comment. I've been watching videos for tips on my plan for a 3Metre x 3Metre patio. It all seems over engineered

    • @chrisnorris1079
      @chrisnorris1079 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hanshoogendyk2203 What? Foot weight is meaningless, that is not the reason you put down a sub-base. Geology/environment is the reason, soil moves around naturally foot traffic is only a small part of that. If you want a path that will last the test of time then do it properly and dig out soft soil as he has done here. By your same logic why not just cut your depths in half and save another 50%. You won't see any difference between 50/40mm and 25mm/20mm in the first year.. it will look equally as good. Will the same be true in 4 or 5 years on though?
