It's episode 30, so I've posted the save to Paradox mods! I'm also working on making a custom "mod" that includes my current mod list. Stay tuned! Save: mods.paradoxplaza.com/mods/87413/Any
Wouldn't the obvious airport call sign be MAG for Magnolia County? Technically, it should be the name of the airport I think but surely this will be Magnolia something Airport. Some flowers or flowering bushes on the side of a hill in the shape of the letters MAG would probably look lovely.
Came here to say the same. Its an amazing spot for Hilton, with a riverfront walking track around that lake. And a potential picnic spot for plane spotters.
I know you normally ask for feedback from people who are in the fields as you develop. I've been a pilot for 17 years and one thing I really wish you would look at when you make airports in the game is wind. I know the game doesn't have real physics, but airports are designed to have runways placed to take advantage of the most common wind for an area. If you wanted to make it more realistic, you should look at wind directions and consider surrounding terrain. James' location would have been terrible and not likely approved for safety reasons. I think they likely would have looked at locations nearer the coast with aircraft being able to take off toward the water (nearly all wind on coasts blows onshore). Aircraft like to take off In to the wind.
Ahh shoot, that is a great point! Based on wind direction, I think the best place would have actually been the opposite side of the tracks - wind is going from the river to the mountain. Not sure why, but the coast has some pretty strange pattern tbh
Ever flown into Timmins, ON on a cross wind? You can see the runway from the back of the plane! That said the YELLOW control tower reminds me of the airport at Iqaluit (YFB).
The other point i would make as someone who works in airport grounds is that i dont know of any US airports that arent pedestrian HOSTILE let alone pedestrian friendly. Really not a thing to see people walking around airport property except for A)planespotters and B)people walking from what you called short term parking to the terminal.
Absolutely love the way you show small town politics in your videos. It's something that a lot of people don't take into consideration when evaluating the effectiveness of local administrations.
Just wanted to add an additional comment. I love the way you need to keep purchasing extra tiles. It's a neat way to simulate how projects go over budget due to unexpected complications.
Not sure if you've addressed this later in the build or not, but aircraft prefer taking off and landing into the wind. Since C:S2 provides a way to visualize the wind direction, I think having the runway aligned with the wind direction would be a nice touch.
I think that might be a tad too much yellow in the airport. Maybe just on the smaller details as an accent. Also, the tornado in the intro: "So you want to build an airport, eh?"
Saw a comment recommending we take colors from the clearwater county logo - perhaps a pinkish color. Not sure why I didn't think of that! Makes me want to try to get a decal of the logo as well!
I also think that this type of yellow tone is not the ideal colour. I think for the cargo element is it nice, like he said referring to DHL but the Airport itself looks a bit outdated like coming from the 70s, where it was in to use very powerful colours. Nowadays you find most of the times more pastel colours with less colour in it and I think that a county which is financing itself an airport wants a more modern looking colour. (Just my thoughts)
Also alot of airports have colored gates so having wild colors on the exterior makes very little sense. The yellow awnings are ok but maybe a bit less intense and tone down the color of the bus
Agreed! A lot of your builds are really realistic; the Airport and the University don't feel that way with the color aspects. You see signage that usually fulfills the color aspect for a lot of places. Things like awnings make sense, visible structural elements seem less likely.
2 things. First: The forest next to the runway needs to go, birds nest in trees and birds and airplane engines don't mix. Second: you left a small patch of roadside parking at the end of the road in front of the terminal.
Hey CPP just wanted to note on your shadows. The checkbox “Terrain casts shadows” is what makes those weird black marks on the roads. I’ve had this option turned off for quite some time and haven’t had any more of those issues. That way you can still keep your shadow quality high(if you wanted). Great build as always. Love the Magnolia series!
Lurking long time subscriber from Verde Beach days. Phil, I just wanted to say you're a master at your craft, and watching all these videos, as well as the guides, have made me a much better player at Cities Skylines. Your videos have also helped me through some rough periods of my working life, being able to watch an episode, before heading to work is my happy place and always puts me in a much better mood. Thank you for your dedication!
No one wants a safety yellow building to be the first impression their community makes 😅. It'd be lambasted as an eyesore before they finished painting it. I suggest a light green as it will better complement the natural surroundings without feeling jarring. Paint the new bridge to Paradise Bay a warm orange-yellow like the Golden Gate in SF.
@CityPlannerPlays I'd use the light green and pink you use for Magnolia County and add a custom sign with the logo to the airport. Just don't make the whole building pink 😅. Maybe make the concrete lighter to look more 'architectural' grade. If I were an architect on a government contract to design an airport for a county called Magnolia, I'd make the tower look like it's a flower in bloom. Oh, but for custom assets... _sigh_
@@melissaharris3389I Could absolutely see a more floral color scheme like what you're thinking looking very good. The university is already purple, so adding floral, pastel pinks, yellows, oranges, and greens as the city's signature look definitely appeals to me. It's supposed to be a lush paradise, might as well go all in on it CPP! Just don't visit if you have pollen Allergies!😅
@@melissaharris3389 I just wanted to second this idea, but also let you know that in the Air Force we call ATC personnel "Tower Flowers" which makes your idea for the paint job extra perfect!
When it comes to airports, there is no such thing as respect the topography. Airports are designed around wind primarily for flight safety. I would love to see this taken into consideration on your next series. Love channel and your height of realism.
I mean, there is a lot of respect for topography, but it tends to be about what's nearby, not on the airport property itself. Hills in the flight path are a really big deal, for example. But I'm quibbling.
Airports very much have to respect the topography... for all that they inevitably involve massive landworks, they're very constrained by the local geography... the presence of hills and waterways, the prevailing wind direction, and what the flight paths pass over. You definitely can't just build one and re-shape the surrounding landscape to fit.
Another thing that often happens - when a highway is rerouted/expanded, the old highway surface is not cleaned up, except where it was severed to join the new path. While it might be a tidiness thing for city planners to remove unwanted stuff, the construction crews need to get paid to take out old road or rail.... and some of us infrastructure historians like to find old stuff and imagine what used to be. 🤨 Where I live, we have footpaths that used to be rail lines. The burger joint is an old engine house, with other commercial built on the old approach. From the air you can still see the footprint of the old roundhouse, though none of the tracks remain. And more recent industrial closures still have disused rail lines running through the city.
Idk why, but MC has easily become one of my favorite builds alongside Nicolet Bay. There’s just something so satisfying and fun about building communities that make sense!
Last episode I suggested to use the train like some sort of metro in paradise Bay. This could be extended so we could have a train line: airport - rowhomes in paradise Bay - train station in paradise Bay - potentially next to the coastline exiting paradise Bay - papermill industrial park. A train station can be placed instead of the parking behind the rowhomes. Finally I just wanted to say I love the color of the airport 💛💛💛, yellow is the best and I love the work you did on stream with the trees but the university looks a bit to monotone with all the dark purple.
If you search around airports of cities with populations 100k to 300k, none of them have infrastructure even close to the level you've built. And all airports also have a industrial/commercial park just outside or connected to the airport. For example, the Rochester MN airport has a really nice commercial park nearby to the airport, and only a 2 lane bidirectional road leading to the airport. The internal area of the airport looks really nice with the landscaping, always impressed with what you're able to do!
Seeing how you needed to run little roads around and between the parking lots really makes me want parking lot roads/networks. I haven't jumped into CS2 yet, and I think that's something I'm really gonna miss when I do. I just love how cohesive you can make parking lots with the surrounding networks and structures. Hopefully it's something we can do in the future.
I'm guessing you can make them with the Road Builder mod. I am still getting used to it, but I see a few places in this build where I probably should have used it.
They sort of exist in the base game but are only accessible via the Extra Networks mod (i think that's how its called). Its an invisible network with perpendicular parking meant to be used in assets. You just need to add a surface over it to make it look good.
As the main airport of Magnolia County, I think the airport would have an IATA code of MGA and an ICAO code of KMGA (MGN was already taken by an airport in Michigan). I also think that while the official name of the airport would be something like Magnolia County Airport, an unofficial name for the airport might be Rafe T. Peterson Airport, named after a historic settler who moved into the area in the late 19th century and cleared all of the land that the airport stands on to make a ranch, while also establishing small communities in the surrounding areas, such as where Paradise Bay is now. However, a series of economic downturns and pressure from the newly formed Magnolia County led to the family closing their ranch after hundreds of years of settlement and selling their property at very low prices to move to a house near Bend. I would think that as R. T. Peterson was the man responsible for clearing the land for human use, the government might want to honour him and his legacy by naming the airport after him.
@@roddo1955 Michigan County, unfortunately. Call signs are hard to get these days, as all the typical ones are taken. There's a reason Canadians just use Ys for all of theirs!
I think you should include a park out by the lake. One this can be used for plane watchers but also some airports have areas for people who are waiting to pick up family that they can wait in an area without circling their car around and around the airport. I know it won’t do much in the game but I think it would be a fun little detail.
Not sure if there are any folks in Magnolia County that didnt like your decision to decrease train service in favor of air service, especially given that your destinations were well served by other forms of transit. I would suggest maybe putting that in as part of the lore (only if you want to, of course). Im sure Chuckles might not appreciate the extra noise and planes in the area, knowing him.
I love your airport builds! My favorite episodes of any series on the channel was the airport/military base in clearwater county. Learned a lot and it felt so true to life, the little community with it and the park on the overlook of the whole county
It's always pleasing to see the ideas come to form, but I think down the line you might end up kicking yourself a little with terminating the highway like that when it very well could extend past the airport in the direction ofthe Township of Taylor Ridge and everything else over there.
I've been following your videos every now and then but this video made me hit the subscribe button. I love how you've used this video on C:SL 2 to educate us about the US planning process in an entertaining manner. Bonus points for the production values. Kudos!
I always enjoy your airport builds, Phil! Excellent work. I have a couple of suggestions: 1) A bus turn around next to the parking structure on the lake side, similar to the one you built in downtown evergreen back in Nicolet Bay. You can place the bus stop there and connect it to the parking structure via pathways, that way the airport shuttle doesn't have to get on the interchange. 2) imho a dedicated bus station is more appropriate for an airport than bus shelters.
Howdy @CityPlannerPlays I just wanted to stop by and thank you. I've watched many civ and city builders play but none have helped me grow as a builder as much as you have so on behalf of Myself and everyone that dutifully subscribes to you, I just wanted to say thanks for being educational, light and fun loving, kind and courteous, you're a gentleman and a scholar.
A tip for when you build future airports (or if you wish to redo this one), runways face the direction of the wind. Planes require headwind for take off and landing. This would make your airport look more realistic. A lot of airports have hotels nearby, you could use low-rent housing and pretend those are hotels.
As an irrigation engineer, i felt overwhelmed by the amount of softscape you have planted. Just the sheer amount of irrigation devices and valves that would have been placed is enormous. Despite the irrigation nightmare, fantastic episode really well built and realistic!!
I dont really think it makes a ton of sense to have the main highway heading into the airport go right into a parking structure. If i was trying to navigate the airport my first instinct would be to follow the highway. You could simplify the interchange by dumping the highway straight into the airport loop at an angle so they can keep some speed and have the parking garage as an interchange. It would also streamline the shuttle bus route by not having to take that circuitous route.
I've been watching since Verde Beach, and I recently went back to watch some of the early videos, and it's amazing at how much your approach to storytelling has changed, and how great the production value has improved. Keep it up Phil!
I would love to see some Industrial and Office uses near the airport, I feel like its pretty common to see industrial parks in the surrounding areas. Would be a great place to consider some of the larger buildings like a new buss terminal, taxi terminal, server farm or some of the specialty buildings like the vehicle plant. Maybe some commercial in the commonly accessed parts near the terminal too.
Loved the build and landscaping, finally the shadows are fixed. here are some suggestions 1. Airports should have a Firehouse or Rescue Departments nearby 2. Have some commercials and add benches, small parks for people to sit around the lake or to view the airplanes from near 3. Add a water fountain in front of airport
Love watching this build. I work at Nashville International (KBNA) and they're doing massive changes to include the interchange off I-40 to accommodate the airport expanding.
They are such economic generators, cities will move heaven and earth for them. Worth it in the long run! Funny enough, I had to look at a map to see where the airport was. Have been to Nashville a number of times but never the airport - I always drive there. Impressive looking airport!
@@CityPlannerPlays It is, but as an FAA Tech (I work on all the systems the Controllers use to do their jobs) they airport authority has made a ton a changes without us in play and it kinda makes operations slightly painful for the sake of getting the numbers landside because you're absolutely correct...the airport generates a TON of money for the local economy which has caused the increase in traffic
Choked on my coffee when I heard the intro. I'm from Europe and its felt so strange to have an airport for a city that is not in the 200 to 5000 thousand people. I actually went on wikipedia and discovered some niche airports in France that actually serve smaller communities, but thats something I had never heard of before.
Honestly the first 3 minutes of the video are some of my favorite, I enjoy learning about the process of getting infrastructure approved and I really appreciate the effort you put into storytelling, it really sets you apart from other content creators that play this game.
I feel the same way. It's funny watching the old Verde Beach episodes before Phil started doing stuff like this because it really adds so much flavor to the build and gives reasons for things being the way they are.
Dude, how cool is it that you included a realistic political scenario prior to the actual building part! Although it's just such a small detail, I really like the format :)
it is great, one think i think in style to make little commercial duty free shops and some restorations by lake on that open spot between parking and airport :)
I think that's a great idea! I also want to add a few warehouses over near the cargo connection. Not a finished area, but a good start! Thanks for the suggestion!
Phil, I want to share with you that binge watching your Verde Beach series got me through a somewhat difficult pregnancy a couple of years ago, to the point where I’m pretty sure my son was as comforted by your voice as I was 😂 now, as I watch your videos, my 2 year old gets so excited for the city tours, watching the cars, trains etc and dancing to your Master Planned Music. it is so special to be able to share the excitement for your videos with him! thank you for being a cornerstone of my comfort content for so long! 💛
An expressroute with just two stops sounds like a pita as a commuter, because it basically forces at least one switch and often drive past where you are trying to go. Usually they go through the entire city, but just halt at stops that are either significant, or cross other lines. That way the high frequency it requires to be useful for AP arrivals over taxis actually gets used and doesn't just sit empty more than half the time. Your AP-Uni route is nigh useless (irl), and with where it ends up, you need to switch to another bus, or worse take a taxi anyway, to get to any accommodation. At least some stops, after reaching the Uni and near some accommodation, sounds reasonable. Similarly, the "long" route to an existing train stop is barely compensating for a lack of a station near the AP and doesn't really give any more access to the city. Doesn't require any additional stops though due to the lack of other public transport where it's going^^ So, you're taking a taxi anyway.
I like how each of your videos as a lot dialogue between all the council members and executive members making their storyline more interesting As they plan out and help out to build your city
Love your use of characters to explain city expansions & infrastructure projects especially as someone who works at a civil engineering firm in an environmental position. So many people and organizations get involved in these projects that it’s cool so that somewhat reflected in these videos :)
ICAO codes in the US start with K, so this should be KMCR for Magnolia County Regional. Its straightforward and makes sense, plus its also not currently in use anywhere in the US or its territories.
ive just stumbled into CS content from the recommendations and i didnt know it could be this crazily well detailed?!?!?! subbing to rewatch this series from the start!
Also, your parking garage, you could have used the road builder mod to add zoning to the highway. Also, there’s no connection to your loop for your parking garage. Most airports don’t have a direct connection to a parking garage like that
I think adding some industry in the shape of warehouses, small commercial like gas stations and some offces around the airport would be nice. normally around airports here will be lots of businesses that pop up supporting or benefitting from the airport and its transport value. also it would add more traffic making the place feel more alive.
@@CityPlannerPlays to add on to this suggestion, maybe use the in-game subway so that you can seamlessly integrate it with a future subway network in Bend (and Paradise Bay, although I imagine that city would probably opt for streetcars/trams instead)
The amount of thought and story you put into your projects is so f*cking impressive. I also really like the realism it brings to the city. Keep on being great!
I'm super disappointed you removed the old Highway after creating the clover. In most cases old roads like that aren't removed but are transitioned into new roles where homes and business can take root without the need for entirely new development. It would allow for a historical link to what used to be. Things are only ever removed when they need to be replaced and in this case there was no need to replace it (and no funding to restore the 'natural' landscape). Timestamp: 27:30
I’m no big shot, but I’ve had a lot of success in my local theatre community as a creative, and a lot of what you said in this video resonated ala networking. I think the skill I put most value in is an ability (and an ENTHUSIASM) to collaborate. No artist is truly a solo act, even if it sometimes looks like it. I truly believe that behind every single piece of successful/good work is a collaborative spirit. It’s powerful because suddenly it transcends the echo chamber of your mind (which no one cares about more than you) and becomes something other people can appreciate because other people DID appreciate it. The moment you claim sole dominion over your art is the moment it dies at the threshold of your brain. Creating stuff is an exercise in conversation, whether it be among an audience or the creators.
Also, would you consider adding an Indian reservation? The area up near Lake Superior has a lot of reservations, and I think it would be a great homage to the Indigenous communities to have an area set aside for them.
Two ideas I'd like to share: 1. On the far side of the lake, where the parking is, would be a great spot for an airport hotel (saw it was already suggested). 2. A small "industrial/office" complex close or next to the cargo terminal representing all the airline catering, general airport/airline maintenance, offices of smaller private charter companies etc. Thanks for the great content!
why is the road going to the airport so large it s more like a freeway and why is there so much parking (the region had 60 thousand inhabitants in total) this might be just an american thing. My city in Europe of a million inhabitants has a fifth of the parking
We often tend to park at the airport with our personal car and leave it there until we return, so it's not just "one day" of parking you have to think about! Lots of extended usage, which means lots of overlap. Hence the increased capacity. :)
Always love an airport build! I hope that modular airport DLC will come soon enough because it is always interesting to see your take in airport building!
The changes to the outside connections for bus and rail might cause some problems. Since the price for the routes have been increased, not only is the "inter-county" usage on those routes disincentivised, but also the local usage, as less people will be willing to use those services to get around Magnolia County. The price change to the bus route will probably annoy the residents of Bailey a lot, as it is their only public transport connection at the moment, and they are now forced to either use their own cars or a taxi to get to other parts of Magnolia County (as I don't think they will be willing to buy tickets for $50 each). Also, with the new bus stop at Paradise Bay station, it might be a good idea to rethink the route of the local bus line in the town to have it serve the station as well (however, I assume that the local bus route will be changed significantly once the tramway opens, so it probably won't be an issue in the near future).
Hey bro, I just found your channel after completely forgetting that Cities Skylines exists. And I just wanted to say that the level of depth you provide through the characters at the beginning and the storylines is next level. On top of your close attention to detail in building the city, I love it. Keep up the good work bro.
I love watching your videos in the afternoons. Great work on the new bridge, it looks like a great landmark of the county. Bright yellow airport may be a bit on the harsh side, but works great as accents on the parking structure.
would love to see an airport hotel and maybe changing the airport shuttle to electric buses. another idea could be giving road cargo traffic an independent connection so they dont clog up the main airport drag. great episode as always :)))
Great episode. Love a good airport build. That lake is crying out to be utilised by Fire Helicopters to service the Airport. Would love to see a super direct light rail connection to and from the airport at some point.
Love the build, and love the colour of the airport. It reminds me of the big orange EasyJet building at London Luton Airport. There's a British comedian called Glen Moore, so I've been reading Moore Glen as that since I first saw it.
Builds a full cloverleaf, immediately anglicizes the pronunciation of Voyageur Portage, jacks up the price of the inter-city bus to drive more air traffic. This is the most American Magnolia County has ever felt
For the airport: MNS Magnolia-Superior Regional Airport. (I actually struggled to find a three-letterism that wasn't already taken!) Of course, it could get dyslexic with MSN Dane County Regional 😀
For bus depots , you can make a Big Depots (with maximum extensions) , on the center of the map . So they can dispatch everywhere over the map . And if you want you can also add small depots(without extensions) on the borders of the map .
It would be best if you fenced off an even larger area surrounding the runway at both ends and on the far side. This to accommodate expansion, Runway End Safety Areas, Approach Lighting. Id also flatten some of the area off the side of the runway as this hill is of limited realism for an airport this size.
Heya! Here's a few things that may help you with your colour choice CPP! -Pay attention to and respect the values (Light and Dark) of the structures when repainting them to not upset the colour hierarchy of the buildings! If you make a colour too close to another, they can muddy the shape language and sense of weight/scale in the build. You see this with the building next to the school block you showed at the end of the video! -Be mindful and sparing with your use of saturation. Higher saturations naturally draw and guide people's eyes because it contrasts the environment, It's a great tool when you want to accentuate the features of a building! But be mindful that overusing bright colours will diminish the impact, and overwhelm the eye with a flood of visual stimuli trying to grab it's attention. Like the watchtower! Hope this helps!
38:11 I can't help but think: "Nice, we make the greener methods of transportation unreasonable to use, so people need to use short distance plane travel instead, which has absurd environmental cost". Also, this might be the european in me speaking, but it seems very weird to have that airport at all. I've grown up in the rural areas near a town with 45.000 people. They have a small flight field, but it is, as you mentioned in the intro, for crop dusting (if even) or sport flying where people get pulled up for their ultra-light glider planes (sry, that's probably not the correct term).
Not Sheila coming out on top again lolllll. Great airport build! I have seen several detailers do them, but it was cool to see someone build one in a more accessible way to the rest of us. For the accent colors on the airport, maybe trying a nice teal blue (like they used for the Olympics) would make it blend with the terrain and make it look more modern. For the university, purple is a tough color to work with. I think anything desaturated is going to be your best bet, maybe a more subtle hue? Sorry, purple is just really hard! EDIT: I saw you added the overview map view so we could see where the project is happening! Thanks! You've probably done this before, but it's super helpful :).
In a rare turn of events, I actually liked Chuckles idea, but something tells me that he and Shiela may have some other tricks up their sleeves for future development. Also, hey that was my name suggestion! I just thought it was a neat way to tie in other parts of the map to Park- I mean Riverock. I thought the idea of the airport was a little bit skeptical, but I think the cargo aspect of it will pay off. Once again you've knocked it out of the park (and all the way to Green Bay). As someone who may be moving to Green Bay/Appleton soon, great to see that I'll have a way to get to Magnolia County. Great episode, Phil!
In going with your comment about not making everything flat.. on a recent trip to North Carolina I had a thought. I haven't seen anyone utilize hills/mountains for their highways in CS2. In that, I mean, highways are cut into the hills/mountains but still have to work with the elevation. Highways aren't always together, sometimes they split (the opposing directions of travel), sometimes by bit, sometimes a lot. One direction might be higher than the other, or vise versa, and they alternate as well. At times they will have hills or valleys (with water drainage) in between with trees and other foliage. Somtimes the outer sides of the highway are smooth or ragged. Occasionally the highway is bridged as well. I think if you had this in mind for a future highway it would add an extra layer of realism and be enjoyable to watch. Always enjoy your builds and the story telling you implement.
i swear you are like the bob ross of city building. you create a story for your cities, and its got a lot of good lore, you make the cities beautiful and livable, and you give them quite a feel. i think we should try and go back to bend for a bit, maybe add some walking bridges that cross the river at the riverfronts of bend and new bend, and just give the areas a new fresh coat of landscaping and paint since the towns were built before all the glorious mods came out and were even built before paradox mods. i would really love a bit of focus onto bend for at least 1 more episode, as i miss bend.
Bend has a lot more coming! The next few episodes are going to be focusing on using mods to improve previously built areas. The train stations, in particular, need some love... but I agree about the riverfront, too. I always meant to do more, but it never happened. There is a missing bridge from Riverbend across the Carp, too.
@@CityPlannerPlays i didn't think bout riverbend, but i do agree bout the missing bridge there too. i can't wait to hear bout bend more, but i also understand theres others that like paradise bay, so maybe have more balanced episodes? that way people like me can see bend more, and people who like the university or paradise bay more get them. doesn't have to be every episode, but enough were everyone gets some enjoyment and theres not a focus onto one specific area of magnolia county.
I like the golden-yellow theme of the airport, here is some town “lore” that could be associated with the color choice. The yellow represents the “pollen” of the magnolia flower where the “bees” (planes) come to land and takeoff. You should make a honeycomb pattern in the landscape with a bee as the logo of the airport. 🌺🐝🍯✈️
i think the airport would do well with a dedicated cycling street from the city for the young people who would like to go on vacation without bringing a big fuel wasting machine. i think schiphol in the netherlands for example would be a great way to get some insperation or improvents,
Long time lurker, 1st time commenter. I'm glad to see the curated story is back. Your story of the political turmoil is the highlight of my day when you post. The other Cities stuff you do is fine, but this is what I'm looking for.
In the middle of the highway leading to the airport, you should add wild flowers. Here in New Jersey, a lot of median space of highways (For example: Atlantic City Express Way) plant sections of wild flowers to help pollination and help bee population.
39:15 For callsigns, MCS (Magnolia County, Superior) is only used by an airport in Argentina, BPB (Bend-Paradise Bay) in Papua New Guinea. PBB (Paradise Bay-Bend) may potentially be (locally) controversial but it is not used by any airport in the world.
It's episode 30, so I've posted the save to Paradox mods! I'm also working on making a custom "mod" that includes my current mod list. Stay tuned!

Wouldn't the obvious airport call sign be MAG for Magnolia County? Technically, it should be the name of the airport I think but surely this will be Magnolia something Airport. Some flowers or flowering bushes on the side of a hill in the shape of the letters MAG would probably look lovely.
@CityPlannerPlays you can change the shadow thing in advanced options, without reducing the rest of the shadow quality to low.
If you are going to make a new neighborhood. May you please make it next to the lake and name it Freeland Park okay and God bless you :)
At 22:40 what about adding a roundabout?
Amazing vid
I am also interested in the mods used
The two parking spots hugging the lake is honestly a primo spot for an airport hotel instead
You're not wrong. We're not done developing this area and parking lots are excellent for holding land for future development....
@@CityPlannerPlays is that why the road is so big going to the airport?
I was also thinking hotel somewhere on the property
Came here to say the same. Its an amazing spot for Hilton, with a riverfront walking track around that lake. And a potential picnic spot for plane spotters.
Inn on the Lake!
After the meeting Chuckles sends the "Heartbreaking: the worst person you know just made a great point" meme to his friends
Hahaha, basically
This is immediately what I thought! Unlikely bedfellows right there.
Yeah, near fields would also probably mean a lot of birds, right? So REALLY unsuitable on that front as well
The other point i would make as someone who works in airport grounds is that i dont know of any US airports that arent pedestrian HOSTILE let alone pedestrian friendly. Really not a thing to see people walking around airport property except for A)planespotters and B)people walking from what you called short term parking to the terminal.
Absolutely love the way you show small town politics in your videos. It's something that a lot of people don't take into consideration when evaluating the effectiveness of local administrations.
Yessss!!! And i learn so much about how spatial planning in the US works!
You could call the airport Magnolia-Paradise, since the IATA code MNP is not yet in use
Yes!
That really has a pleasant sound to it 😁😎
IATA code MNP is used for Maron, in Papua New Guinea. That said, it is a good fit
The IATA code MAP is not yet in use so that would be a good fit.
MGN is the IATA code for a municipal airport in Harbor Springs michigan, but i feel like MGN has a nice ring to it for the magnolia county airport
Totally forgot about that but I agree - that should have been a consideration!
Pedantic.
@@CityPlannerPlays Great idea, both of those!
Second: you left a small patch of roadside parking at the end of the road in front of the terminal.
exactly on pt 1...also leaves dont mix well with planes and tarmacks
They definitely mix but only once. 🐦
Came here to say this, I know it doesn't look super lush but all those trees are inviting birds into the engines
@@iamaduckquack Creates a really fine blend.
Thank you so much for the kind words and I hope that things have improved at work. Thanks, also, for the support over the years. Means a ton!
@@CityPlannerPlaysYour videos have helped me with this game a lot too. And i want to thank you for that.
Haha... you're not wrong. Any colors that you think would work better?
@CityPlannerPlays I'd use the light green and pink you use for Magnolia County and add a custom sign with the logo to the airport. Just don't make the whole building pink 😅. Maybe make the concrete lighter to look more 'architectural' grade.
If I were an architect on a government contract to design an airport for a county called Magnolia, I'd make the tower look like it's a flower in bloom. Oh, but for custom assets... _sigh_
Here I was going to suggest the color of Spam....😝
@@melissaharris3389I Could absolutely see a more floral color scheme like what you're thinking looking very good. The university is already purple, so adding floral, pastel pinks, yellows, oranges, and greens as the city's signature look definitely appeals to me.
It's supposed to be a lush paradise, might as well go all in on it CPP! Just don't visit if you have pollen Allergies!😅
@@melissaharris3389 I just wanted to second this idea, but also let you know that in the Air Force we call ATC personnel "Tower Flowers" which makes your idea for the paint job extra perfect!
The lake by the airport is a gorgeous place to place down airport hotels in the future
When it comes to airports, there is no such thing as respect the topography. Airports are designed around wind primarily for flight safety. I would love to see this taken into consideration on your next series. Love channel and your height of realism.
Totally missed that, but it's a great idea! Will do!
Where I live, we have footpaths that used to be rail lines. The burger joint is an old engine house, with other commercial built on the old approach. From the air you can still see the footprint of the old roundhouse, though none of the tracks remain. And more recent industrial closures still have disused rail lines running through the city.
Phil actually mentioned this in one of his videos - I think the mass transit one - that near his house there are trails that used to be rail lines.
The sound of my heart breaking at "same thing for train service - increase the cost, decrease the frequency" 😭
I love the lore as much as the building and community planning. Really helps sell this as a real place.
"deluxe parking" "premier facility" "i don t want people to walk": Sheila didn't micro manage the project well enough.
@@CityPlannerPlays Ah man I totally forgot about that! That mod is bananas, I can't wait to get stuck into it.
MGA is taken as an IATA code by an airport in Nicaragua 😢
Figures Michigan would throw a wrench in the airport code!
Buckeye here, so I had to say something about that silly state to the north.😆
@@OZf1re is MGC taken?
I like that idea. In the future people will say' I'm taking the early flight out of Rafe.
Love that idea!
Also think adding a police station and a fire station just so if there is any problems at the airport they will have quick response to the airport
37:50 increasing the price for busses and trains to encourage airplane usage has to be the most american thing ever.
You might be right about that. Paradise Bay will continue to grow and it's going to get hemmed in. Maybe we'll reserve space for an extension!
I've been following your videos every now and then but this video made me hit the subscribe button. I love how you've used this video on C:SL 2 to educate us about the US planning process in an entertaining manner. Bonus points for the production values. Kudos!
I always enjoy your airport builds, Phil! Excellent work.
I have a couple of suggestions:
1) A bus turn around next to the parking structure on the lake side, similar to the one you built in downtown evergreen back in Nicolet Bay.
There are great hotels and motels in game but they seem to be bugged and don't spawn. If you place them with Find it they don't occupy either.
I think that's a very fair point. Might be time for a mulligan!
Loved the build and landscaping, finally the shadows are fixed. here are some suggestions
1. Airports should have a Firehouse or Rescue Departments nearby
2. Have some commercials and add benches, small parks for people to sit around the lake or to view the airplanes from near

Also with the new road builder you can put electric and pipes under highways!
Also, your parking garage, you could have used the road builder mod to add zoning to the highway. Also, there’s no connection to your loop for your parking garage. Most airports don’t have a direct connection to a parking garage like that
@@rynezuzinec688 Oh man, I need to do that! In fact, that'll allow me to make some rural areas that are more like the ones I'd expect to see here!

I think adding some industry in the shape of warehouses, small commercial like gas stations and some offces around the airport would be nice. normally around airports here will be lots of businesses that pop up supporting or benefitting from the airport and its transport value. also it would add more traffic making the place feel more alive.
While I think a lit highway would be essential for an airport, I think a major use such as an airport would also need its own substation
I agree. Will get that added!
I love the music change, the similar music kind of drives me crazy when I binge a series. Love the content!
I suggest adding an express train service connecting ether Bend or Paradise Bay to the airport.
Eventually, yes. The airport is not it it's final for
@@CityPlannerPlays to add on to this suggestion, maybe use the in-game subway so that you can seamlessly integrate it with a future subway network in Bend (and Paradise Bay, although I imagine that city would probably opt for streetcars/trams instead)

My thought too.
Yes
@@CityPlannerPlays Awesome!! I can't wait to see what you come up with!
Even going by your updated beginner guide I can’t seem to get a city off the ground so watching you build up magnolia county is very therapeutic
Probably should build your fire services first. Just a suggestion
Love your content! Thanks for another amazing video! 💕
I dig the purple university buildings. Reminds me of Northwestern or one of the Wisconsin schools (but can't remember which).
Two ideas I'd like to share:
Haven't watched your skylines videos in a while and the character set up in the beginning was a really cool surprise. Love you man

Hey bro, I just found your channel after completely forgetting that Cities Skylines exists. On top of your close attention to detail in building the city, I love it. Keep up the good work bro.
That cloverleaf makes me so upset that it fits so perfectly. I have never been so torn.

Great episode. Love a good airport build. That lake is crying out to be utilised by Fire Helicopters to service the Airport. Would love to see a super direct light rail connection to and from the airport at some point.
I really like your series ob MC. Its so relaxing to watch and heat
(I actually struggled to find a three-letterism that wasn't already taken!)
Of course, it could get dyslexic with MSN Dane County Regional 😀
Having spent a lot of time up there I'm glad you didn't forget the mountain range between Superior and Duluth
A preemptive comment and a like. Will watch it later. Been waiting for this! Magnolia County is my soap opera!
I just discovered this series and I love that your making it a mix of gameplay and story!
And it was all yellow!! Heck yeah!
Holy bus utilization Batman!
Over 100% usage on some lines is insane
It's a big reason why the airport isn't doing all that well. I need to figure that out.
Been watching since Clearwater County episode 11 or something, and have to say: I love your videos man.
Keep it up
In going with your comment about not making everything flat.. on a recent trip to North Carolina I had a thought.
Here in New Jersey, a lot of median space of highways (For example: Atlantic City Express Way) plant sections of wild flowers to help pollination and help bee population.
the tornado in the intro, killed me! It's not a City Planner build without disasters happening all the time in the background!

For callsigns, MCS (Magnolia County, Superior) is only used by an airport in Argentina, BPB (Bend-Paradise Bay) in Papua New Guinea. PBB (Paradise Bay-Bend) may potentially be (locally) controversial but it is not used by any airport in the world.
