Your "Lane Mathematics" was an inspired discovery but I wonder that you might need to evolve a new idea to combat traffic. Driving home on the 401 in Southern Ontario, it struck me that the key to smooth traffic is stopping drivers chopping and changing between lanes. Try not to throw extra lanes at the problem but instead concentrate on making drivers change lanes as few times as possible. You can just call it what it aspires to be: "Laminar Flow". This also involves (as roads become more busy) removing buildings at or near junctions. Put parks down instead or gardens to drive up value and reduce pollution.
Yes it helps but sadly thats a driver education thing and getting people to realize that swapping to the lane marginallly faster does nothing but slow traffic down. Also your car speed isn't on and off that you can glide without breaking and feather/press the pedal for different speeds Remember an old military saying: slow is smooth smooth is fast
If we're being completely honest here, the biggest issue with Southern Ontario highways is the fact that every possible destination is a congested mess keeping everyone on the highways way longer than they should be. The actual solution would be to get more private cars off the roads, but I'm not naive enough to think that's ever going to happen, since the public transport system is a joke on a good day and the walkability isn't even worth mentioning.
Vehicle grid lock, fine. People grid lock is a failure. People would just walk around the stuck cars. I'm working on the New Tealand map in CS1 and loving it. Just not a fan of all of the problems in CS2, you're a more patient man than I Biffa....lol.
33:04 All those cars are going down that way to turn around to get onto the ring road junction near by because they can't turn left to go either direction. It's the same reason your bus line has to cross the bridge and go around the roundabout to get onto the ring road.
That seems a bit op. Realistically, the camera should put the speeding resident on a wanted list. That way, if a police sees that resident driving, they get pulled over and fined.

Yea I feel like theres a huge problem with the parking lots. Whether they are the stand alone ones, or the ones attached to buildings, Peds will make the most ridiculous turns to get into the parking lot, no matter what. Never fails to cause backups
Nice fix! But I still maintain my comment from last video about your connectivity and hierarchy. The junction where you added the slip - when you've got that many cars all heading in the same direction and jamming up, surely that suggests that you're funnelling. A couple more connections would spread the load. I think that, in turn, would have saved you a lot of headache in managing all those junctions. Then again, where's the fun in that?
I was having the same problem with people using bus-only lanes, and I discovered if you read the description of the lanes it's busses, emergency vehicles, and *vehicles making a turn*. Which, I understand why, but it means you can't limit civilian traffic. Which sucks. Love the channel! Thanks for the vids.
I love how every time biffa goes to give dedicated turns he removes the ability for them to pick the multiple lanes cause it already has a dash line for it and when he clicks to give all he's done is remove it as an option 😅
Pedestrians at roundabouts really kill the whole purpose of the roundabout. I always get rid of the crosswalk and either make ramps or crosswalks further away from them.
About 13:26 while you are working on that Stroad. If you make back entrances to the parking or flip the buildings around. The Biffa I watch would be able to eliminate the traffic that way. There is a lot of crossing there over.

I wonder if an underpass function will ever make its way into the game, so cims walk underground to cross roundabouts? So you don't always have to build footbridges to keep cims off the roads when crossing.
Where you removed the roundabout on the 6-6 junction and added the slip road, you should remove the pedestrian crossings leading to the island the slip road created. There's nowhere for anyone to go there except right back across the street.
Think you need to re learn your left and rights haha , on one traffic light they was all turning right and you kept saying left and a few other times 😂

its really weird that youre allowing cars to pull u-turns or swap lanes while inside the turning movement. Both of those are big get you a fine activities here and for good reason in most cases
Like you say Biffa, the one size fits all repair isn’t here so you need to learn. Your video on traffic management with traffic lights vs roundabouts is a thing. 👍🏻
Great video! I've been tinkering with my traffic, which is fine 80% of the time but during rush hour some parts of my city just kind of collapse. Getting better after every iteration. Thanks for the inspiration!
@32:41 you should make that 2 dedicated turning lanes with one ongoing, there is a large amount of that traffic coming off the round about that is trying to turn at that intersection, so only having 1 turn lane is going to cause it to back up all the time.
When I saw this video, I thought I was being trolled with those traffic problems at the start. I'm currently having the same problems in professional traffic modelling software.
It definitely feels that when it's perfected, the despawn mod will be useful for people who like to play like you do - as I mentioned on the video from the other day, it's clear that despawning needs to happen as the vehicle AI isn't good enough by itself, but at least the mod lets you tailor it to your own preferences.
in my limited experience, a draw-your-own roundabout works better with lane tool since they're all junctions to the game, loved the video! thanks for figuring out how all these mods actually work and what they actually do!!
Reminds me of a real life event. There was a big event in a big sports hall and people are driving in and out from there all day causing traffic jams on one specific red-light crossing. What people should have done is to stay put one their places until traffic cleared but what they did was to go into the intersection because they had green light and got stuck in the middle. When lights switched again cars from the other directions could not move at all. I see this in City Skylines as well, cars drive forward because there is a space to drive not thinking about the overall consequences of the intersection.
It's pretty telling looking at how much the traffic relies on despawning cars. They either couldn't get traffic to work without despawning things so often, or didn't even try because they already had this as a solution. In the end it makes the game more shallow because it will just delete stuck cars instead of asking the player to fix bad road layouts. Not that the devs even added the required tools to fix these things, because once again we need the traffic manager mod to do that for them. For which you now also need a paradox account.
The buslane being turned into a one-way instead is a perfect example of the preferred path. You often see this for walkways or paths where the designer plans it one way, but the people actually walking choose the more efficient route instead. You can find 100s of photos of concrete pathways with almost no wear or tear and then right next to it a patch of dirt where it's clear 100s of people walk across it. The knee-jerk reaction by some is to punish those not using the laid out path, but the more modern approach would be accepting that people are right.
Great to see the "fix the traffic" coming back to the game. But I have visual problems following what you're doing some of the time. I was wondering about speed, seemed to me like these 6 lane roads probably make the traffic faster, which means it gets to the next blockade quicker. If the speed were more sensible on smaller roads, would it make a difference?
Retrofitting an entire city for this mod sure looks daunting, good content tho! 😅 But this mod rly looks like something that should've been accommodated for since day1 for any non-content creators
The mod is looking great, but what I'm looking forward to seeing you try out is the street designer mod that lets you design the streets any way you want with any type of lane, any type of median etc in any order.
Since you can, maybe remove the u-turns on the strode and any other high traffic intersections. Also, the roundabout near the edge of the map might be salvageable by nudging the roads entering the roundabout since the lanes slightly overlap
I did notice that when you're adding lane directions, you're allowing people to make to make U-turns in the middle of an intersection. That shouldn't be happening. That's what roundabouts are for. By not allowing citizens to freely make U-turns where they shouldn't, it should help with freeing up unnecessary traffic congestion.
Can you modify the road speed? AT the 30:45 fix of the bus only I noted that all the roads were 30 and 35 for the speed limit, and you had used limits as an effective pathing influence in previous builds.
I think there should be some pedestrian intersections that you can select and drop into place in the same way that the motorway intersections can be added. A choice of even 4 or 5 of the more common types would be great. Some underpasses and pedestrian bridges. Would save so much effort with trying to squeeze them in yourself.
The mahoosive queue of people isn't down to poor city planning, it's the line of people queueing up waiting patiently for you to do a Timberborn livestream.. 🧐
I'm midway through the video at the moment (22:45) and I'm really curious about your aversion to traffic lights. In my city, I've found that using them actually controls traffic so much more (with the traffic light mod, and the lane controller, and make sure to remove "Unsafe" - unsafe turns really goofs things up) than just letting the junctions be open. Also, at about 37:52, there's a weird audio glitch where you're talking about moving the Medical Clinic, and then you're cut off by music and we don't hear the rest of what you say.
I just spend 4h fixing my city with the despawn mod. Lane mathematics really becomes important if you use this and the traffic tool is a must. There is one important nuisance i noted: Many nodes, especially if you change the road types, have u turn on them, even when there is a solid line. 🤬 I added a feature request to remove all u-turns 😅
I agree. (1) Cars shouldn't block intersections (don't block the box) (2) they should obey the rules of the roundabouts - yield to traffic already in the roundabout and (3) pedestrians should be able to walk in between the blocked cars like in real life.
Can you use pedestrian underpasses? Seems like they could be a potential fix for certain areas allowing the elimination of crosswalks - maybe on roundabouts? We have a pedestrian underpass going under a roundabout (in the shape of an X) in Norwich (top of St Stephens for those who know the area)
Imagine driving home from work and being behind a car that engine stalled near a roundabout, only for an unseen deity to literally delete it from existence
Only in Biffa's cities would you have no traffic lights - no wonder its so chaotic, yet at same time can have less traffic if it works smoothly. I for one would prefer traffic lights as it makes the game more realistic, yet have some areas with no traffic lights - and mesh both ways together around the city
I'm really struggling as a new player to CS2, I seem to just struggle constantly with making money. I'd love to see a beginner guide from you, I think you'd have some really good insights and experience.
I’m new to this game I watched kibitz recently (2021 series) and found you today and oh boy you and kibitz are so different in fixing traffic (my English is not good sorry if I make a mistake)
as a vanilla player I cry with my junctions even with the despawning thing on because vanila itself has almost no lane mathematics I can have 1 lane or 3 lane highways, that’s it. No assimetrical roads also.
With regards to mods, it might not be a bad idea to post a follow-up video with recommended mods (traffic mods, better bulldozer, etc) post-patch. There's a ton of them out there, after all, with more showing up by the day.
imo if you are turning right into a road with multiple lanes you should only be going into the rightmost lane, not crossing 2 lane to get into the left most lane. not sure if the cities logic matters here.
Flashback to that time RTGame broke the game so bad he achieved 100% traffic flow in a sponsored tournament. They had to check his save file to make sure he wasn't cheating, and confirmed that he just broke the calculation or something. Poor Biffa, though. Iirc, he got last place that round with like 20% traffic flow.
I have now tried the mod, my CPU didn't melt, though I ended up canning my poorly designed city and starting a new one with more public transport options early on.
All these C:S2 videos and the new updates has me really tempted to play it again.. Has the awful performance been addressed yet though? Don't have to make the game look like a potato to get 60fps?

Also, at about 37:52, there's a weird audio glitch where you're talking about moving the Medical Clinic, and then you're cut off by music and we don't hear the rest of what you say.
I just spend 4h fixing my city with the despawn mod. Lane mathematics really becomes important if you use this and the traffic tool is a must.
There is one important nuisance i noted: Many nodes, especially if you change the road types, have u turn on them, even when there is a solid line. 🤬
I added a feature request to remove all u-turns 😅
I agree. (1) Cars shouldn't block intersections (don't block the box) (2) they should obey the rules of the roundabouts - yield to traffic already in the roundabout and (3) pedestrians should be able to walk in between the blocked cars like in real life.
Can’t wait for this game to finally come to consoles 🍻
I’m new to this game I watched kibitz recently (2021 series) and found you today and oh boy you and kibitz are so different in fixing traffic (my English is not good sorry if I make a mistake)
you can set the traffic light mod to automatically set lights to split phasing with turning on red and ped phase in the settings
as a vanilla player I cry with my junctions even with the despawning thing on because vanila itself has almost no lane mathematics
I can have 1 lane or 3 lane highways, that’s it. No assimetrical roads also.
Its great to see City Fix is back! ( Even if its your city hah! )
With regards to mods, it might not be a bad idea to post a follow-up video with recommended mods (traffic mods, better bulldozer, etc) post-patch. There's a ton of them out there, after all, with more showing up by the day.
I think it would help at the T junctions to make them right turn only, especially when there isn't a traffic light.
imo if you are turning right into a road with multiple lanes you should only be going into the rightmost lane, not crossing 2 lane to get into the left most lane. not sure if the cities logic matters here.
I have now tried the mod, my CPU didn't melt, though I ended up canning my poorly designed city and starting a new one with more public transport options early on.
think the best way to solf all the problem you have wiht the trevic is to go back to the vanilla way?
All these C:S2 videos and the new updates has me really tempted to play it again..
Has the awful performance been addressed yet though? Don't have to make the game look like a potato to get 60fps?
Well yes and of course it does depend on your PC specs :-)
@@BiffaPlaysCitiesSkylines I'd be happy if that's the case. Last time I played it, medium preset still gave stutters while low looked like trash, on a fairly high spec computer..
This is the most American city I've seen you build yet 😅
✅ stroads
✅ suburban sprawl
✅ six-lane pedestrian crossings with no refuge or traffic lights (aka the kill zone)
✅ solution to all traffic: "just one more lane bro"
@31:00 looks like a lot of people are being poisoned by the industry
5:30 my head canon: was a car crash, those people are the curious that swarn around it
Hi guys, any hope to get a mod that fix roundabouts so they can work as they should? Cause with proper working roundabouts can fix traffic more easly stopping me screaming at monitor
try using 2lane Overpassess Above The Roundabout. Roundabout Makes The Rd Safer Bit Slow Of The Through Traffic. IRL This Is The Solution If You Don’t Wanna Upgrade The Rd To A Highway For Functional As A Ring Rd. Or Make ItA Higer Capacity When Its Need Is Right Type Of Management.
man your cities traffic has p r o b l e m s.
im so used to not seing any pop up notifications at all in my city, i love economy 2.0 just for that
