It's not easy writing a song talking about one thing without talking about that thing while actually talking about that thing while in fact talking about another thing. He's phenomenal.
Tim Minchin also does some of the most heartbreakingly beautiful songs dressed in comedy. Not Perfect, White Wine In the Sun and a few others never fail to bring a tear to my eye.
This is one of my favourite types of anything - people who are doing really technically proficient stuff to do really ridiculous or stupid stuff that also has a bit of interesting narrative or messaging to it. Tim Minchin is great for that. At least half his songs I've heard have made me sit back at the end and just go "Oh you clever bastard." :D
I saw him at the Perth Concert Hall (for the first time) in 2009, when he did his first proper tour - and the crowd was on the edge of their seats when he started this song, with the build up. Everyone absolutely erupted into laughter when he hit the punchline. It was really great.
I saw him last summer in Toronto and he was fabulous!! I cannot get enough of the sound of that piano; it is so beautiful and he can play for days. Just brilliant!!
As a ginger myself I absolutely love this song and Tim. Also the song "F sharp" of his is something i think you would really appreciate, Tim is a master at writing things right on the edge of being ok but still being funny and can be quite thought provoking.
He's a total genius. Check out the entire Groundhog Day musical (including Tim singing many of the songs on tv) and his big hits like "RocknRoll Nerd", "Darkside", "Not Perfect" and "White Wine in the Sun".
😮😮 so hyped to see your thoughts on Tim, he’s a musical genius in so many ways. He wrote the lyrics for Matilda and Groundhog Day musicals. Songs from either would be worth visiting if you ever do musical reactions.
My faves of Tim are Thank you God, Lullaby and the Pope Song (although that’s a tough reaction) But there are incredible gems all through his discography to discover
I saw Tim doing this live at a new material gig in Hammersmith years ago. The way you could feel the tension built around you as people cotton on to what he wants to think it's about was palpable, then the way it releases it with "only a ginger can call another ginger, ginger". It was utterly electric. Genius.
He's so good that after you'd talked about the upward key change, you straight-up didn't notice when he did an even bigger upward shift and still sounded effortless and playful. (and yes, enjoyable reaction and well-done analysis thanks Beth)
Was not aware of Tim until I watched his wonderful series Upright. He sang a beautiful song on the shoe called Carry You which you should definitely check out.
Comedy that makes you think and take a look at yourself along with brilliant keyboards that seem to get lost as you concentrate on the words. The brilliance of Tim.
If you like a little Jazz, then how about reacting to Tim's song called Storm, as a bonus to the Jazz you get some really vivid scene painting from the words, it's beautiful.
@@DJ.LakeSea I'm pretty sure your Perth was named from the original Scottish Perth as the guy that founded it was from Perth, Scotland. I've gotta stop saying Perth. Perth.
Tim Minchin is highly regarded and intelligent. He gave a speech to uni graduates. Suggest you look that up in your own time. Onya beautiful Beth! Love from Western Australia 😊
He's more than just a lyrical genius, honestly there's two kinds of musicians in the world, there's the ones that have studied insanely hard on musical theory (which he also has too), you can stick sheet music in front of them or play them a song and they'll play it back perfectly, any style, any genre, any level of complexity, they'll play it, but then there's people like Tim, it's far more than just technical skill or understanding of musical theory, dude is just naturally talented on top of everything else.
I keep watching reactions to this song because I love the song so damn much. This is, without doubt, the best and most insightful reaction video I’ve seen thus far. Well done.
You should do more of Tim Minchin songs! He is so great! An amazing artist 🙌🏼 He has a lot of funny songs and also the most heartbreaking ones! And we'll, he's a master at the piano 🎹 By the way, would be awesome if you react to him singing as Judas Ps: I love your videos ❤

Check out Play It Safe. He wrote this last year for the Sydney Opera House 50th Anniversary. Between the video and his song, I promise you wil be moved.
I LOVE it when people don't figure it out till the punch line! XD I certainly got hit with it the first time. I'd never thought about the fact that ginger is an anagram of the word that's being implied in the beginning. XD Also, side note, I was not aware of this for a long time so I didn't really get the joke but Ginger Nuts are actually a brand of cookie/biscuit in AUS that is popularly dunked in tea.
Welcome to the Minchin rabbit hole. Now to hear your take on _Inflatable You,_ or for a more serious side, _Rock And Roll Nerd_ and _Airport Piano_ are great.
As soon as you said that the topic of the song is specific to you, I knew what it was going to be about and what the word was. But when he listed off the letters, I was just as surprised as you were that they were the same. That is some very, very clever writing. And, of course, when he finally said it, your reaction was priceless.
I saw Tim play live in a small venue once, and I was pretty close to the stage. It was nothing short of electrifying. I'm something of a wordsmith myself, love writing stories, poems, setting crosswords - and I play piano too, so I really appreciate what he does. He not only writes the smartest, sharpest lyrics, he also makes soulful and accomplished piano playing while singing them look easy. And it really, REALLY isn't. He's a one-in-a-million genius.

Oh God Yes!
Seconded
Oh yes! I played that to a friend of some musical talent and her response was: what did I do to you!?
That song made me realise a lot of Aussies talk in F shaaaaahp

Tim Minchin is just a gem. I like his style of comedy. He likes to go from serious to funny as oppose to many who do it the other way around.
