It's rare to have a song emulate my feelings towards a certain topic, I feel this song does that perfectly. Tim is an artist that I didn't know I needed in my life until you all have sent me on this journey and I am so glad that you suggested him.

My brother-in-law prayed very hard whilst my sister was giving birth to her 1st child and is convinced it saved her life. My sister and I think the NHS and blood transfusion had more to do with it.
Faith is a powerful, addictive inclination. It is one of those superfluous ways in which you maintain control of a hapless situation by bowing yourself to some perceivable entity that can surely make it right, and the simple, horrific idea that you can do nothing in the face of happenstance is an idea as terrifying and unacceptable to some people as it is factually true. I hope that helps, I myself have dabbled in light superstition (moulding my own perception a little, closing my eyes tight and such, or visualising a better situation) in trying times, but I am far from figuring out how to deal with all of this in reality.

Honestly religion to me is far scarier and I honestly am baffled that the idea of an eternal afterlife could offer comfort to anyone, you either don't know what eternity means or are blinded by fear of a pernicious and very evil God. The natural world is so much more magnificent than any mythology ever invented by man, physics and evolutionary biology is so fascinating and wonderful and it makes me so sad that people put their faith into man made creators instead of truly trying to understand just how magnificent our world is and just how lucky we are to be here. 98 per cent of all life that has ever lived on our earth alone is now extinct, it's incredible that we are here to experience life at all.
@@jackwhitbread4583 That sounds good in theory, but beauty is subjective, that is, a consequence of perception. Things that offer more straightforward comforts are often truer than lies we be Holden ourselves to.
People cope in different ways, I agree it was completely down to medical help, but mentally they could have called out to the sun for help and that would have had the same calming effect on their mind. It's the law making on God, sun.... Lampposts supposed teachings that I have problems with.

@@crazyratlady3026 that's brilliant! Bees are very naturally vulnerable to parasites, and one of the parasites can cause their wings not to develop, so that's why that happens. Normally a bee with that condition won't survive. It's the only reason you might have a 'pet' bee indoors (otherwise they are better off outside). My brother had a pet rat and it was very cute! :D One of my favourite things rats and bees both share is how cute they are when they rub their legs on their little faces to clean them, aww. My fiancée likes them too. Animals are just brilliant in general. :)

@@seansavage4766 This was a show in front of a live audiance so I doubt the did multiple takes, I think I recall they had rehearsed it a bunch of times and he stuffed it up every time, but this final time managed to get through it without stuffing it up.

I was raised as one of those people. Always at least one or two Bible studies going, missions trips to Haiti, street ministry, junior Bible quiz, senior Bible quiz, all that. Then I joined the Marines. It took no time flat to realize religion is like Santa. Invisible man watching everything everyone does promising future rewards if you'll be good now. I try to be good now for goodness sake. Care without hope of reward. I believe in the intrinsic importance of community, responsibility and love.
God is Santa for adults who REALLY needed him to be real as a kid.
Minchin is brilliant. And I’m with ya on prayer being narcissistic, and whenever they pray for something like passing a test and they pass them it’s god, but when they pray for something and it doesn’t happen then “god has other plans”.
It’s a box of cognitive dissonance they’ve created so they can believe that their god answers prayers even when it doesn’t work.
And god never cures things we can see, apparently god hates amputees because he never cures them no matter how many pray.

Also, if it's all pre-destined and he knows everything in the future, doesn't that just make him a pretty sick sadist? Who can watch evil and not stop it? God is such a prick.
I can never hear someone describe a personal accounting of a miracle diety response without thinking about the documentaries I've seen that talk about the ones you DON'T get miracled, and who are treated the most awful way in their direst times of need, caused by religious harm in the first place (as in, avoiding proper medical paths that could've actually helped), just to be labelled as "insufficiently faithful" and thrown aside in order to keep up the pretense. For every Sam's mum tale there's more than one other person still suffering from the same condition (or succumbed to it) who isn't talked about.
As a teen I prayed to God every night, because I was transgender and had a chronic depression - and I would beg him repeatedly to "fix me".
Every night I would "feel" that my prayer was answered, expecting to wake up the next morning all better - hopefully in a body that matched my gender identity (silly in hindsight, I know, but I was desperate)... After several years, I even acknowledged that if he couldn't fix my body (for whatever reason), at least he could take the pain away by "fixing" my brain to match my body instead. Unsurprisingly that didn't happen either.
Over time I grew resentful; I thought God hated me and wanted me to suffer, that he was deliberately ignoring my prayers, or worse giving me the "feeling" that my prayers were answered, only to then do nothing just to torment me. Eventually I came to understand that there was no God, that I had been wasting my time praying to and raging against someone that didn't exist - and with that realization I stopped resenting him, and more importantly stopped hating myself (over time).
I slowly accepted, that reality is what it is, and there are some things within my power to change, and some things that are not - but waiting for some divine entity to step in and fix my problems would never solve anything. After that, at age 18, I left the church and contacted my doctor about the prospect of gender reassignment.
Its also very selfish, they're not being altruistic in any way, its I'll do this if you give me that.
You asked about thoughts on prayer. I agree with the bumper sticker: "Prayer: When you care enough to do the very least."
The very least being praying to a God you supposedly love and demand he give you all this shit on Sundays.... His day off. Yeah how thoughtful 😂😂😂😂

I was raised in a religious fundamentalist home. My mother was very strict about religion. Prayer is a conversation religious people have in their head with a being they believe exists in order to make them feel better about thinking they have taken action about a subject they have no power over. This is to appease themselves and their desire to "help".
Praying in public is the one that gets me. Because the Bible specifically states prayer is a personal matter, so pretty much what was stated: "it's like meditation".
Praying in church or having a group prayer before a meal are against that notion.
People pray when they hear of a terribly sad, terribly cruel outcome for one or more people, when they don't care enough to actually sacrifice money time, etc, to help.
It's really saying, I don't actually care enough to do anything but I'll tell you I shall pray, because saying, "Meh. Don't really care," makes me look bad.

Cynicism is not the same as skepticism and Tim has said dozens of times that his worldview is not remotely cynical and he sees a great deal beauty all around him in the world. Don't equate cynicism with skepticism because they are not remotely the same.

I think your point about prayer originally having a meditative function that's been lost rings true. I'm not religious, but I clearly remember my Irish Catholic Grandma who would do minimum 1 rosary every single day. She lived through some difficult times, and I do believe the meditative element of repetitive prayer was a source of calm and strength for her to face the challenges she faced.
An important process of taking time out every day and chanting a repetitive mantra inevitably calms the mind, paired with intentions of being grateful and of service to your community. For her, this pratice arrived through via religion, but I feel the practice itself has value, even completely separated from its religious context.
Time and time again "prayer" has the exact same result as random chance.
If prayers worked we wouldn't need medicine, science, hospitals.
I find it funny how people "thank god" instead of their doctors and surgeons.
If prayer worked first responders would says "quick! Get them to a church" instead taking them to a hospital!

I watched a documentary about a radical medical procedure to remove lethal blood clots in the brain. The program explained that the procedure was possible due to a Swedish skier drowning in freezing water and being medically dead for SIX hours (spoiler- she did not see any god or lights or angels or devils ) and return to full physical and mental function.
In order to remove this blood clot from the patients head they had to cool him until his heart stopped, remove the clot, and then revive him. This was a radical surgery that took a lot of planning , the most cutting edge surgical technology and over 20 doctors and nurses to perform. The clot was removed FAST and they revived the patent without having to use any electroshock.
The family and the patient gave god and prayer all the credit for this. 🤦 🤦♂️ 🤦♀️ They completely minimized the role the medical team played in saving the man's life. Made me want to punch them right through the screen.

No, given the known past of churches, that would be one of the things their god is singularly uninterested in preventing.
“Come Home Cardinal Pell” - Tim did a song about that issue too, which raised a bunch of money for survivors of institutional sexual abuse to travel to the Vatican during an inquest into clerical complicity

These prayers remind me of people who pray for a competition win, soccer, athletics, whatever, who then thank god for their victory - what about the poor losers & their prayers?! 🤪
K so here's the thing about prayer. If you believe in an all-knowing, all-powerful god, then nothing happens unless he wants it to. To pray for him to change his mind is a waste of time because he already knows how it's going to end, he already knew you were going to pray for it, he already knows how he'll respond to that prayer - literally nothing CAN change. It's all pre-determined.
Also, they've done studies. It doesn't work. It's success rate is no different than chance, except in the case when they studied second-hand effects (i.e. if you tell a sick person you're praying for them) in which case it's actually been shown to make their chances worse, most likely because that puts an additional stress on them to get better to validate your prayers.
Whether you believe in a god or you don't, prayer is bullshit.

I have a particular little hobby that a person with your profile of yt channel probably understands, I watch a lot of reaction videos :) This video reminds me specifically of the wave of 'yes-exactly!!' kind of feelings this piece gave me when I first heard it some years ago. I've watched dozens of reactions to it looking for your exact reaction - the shock and awe of the confused but stubborn thoughts and ideas being so ingeniously put together kind of for you before your eyes. There's a great video on TH-cam of him addressing a graduating class at his college. After the address he gets an honorary PhD from the Dean. The "catalog" of Tim's accomplishments is staggering. "Nine Lessons I Learned in Life" is the title I believe. It doesn't contain any music spoilers if you're interested.
I enjoy the reactions, definitely recommend 'if I didn't have you' by Tim, the full 12 minute uncut version (it has some speaking bits, please watch it all) 😁
The man is brilliant. He can shock, but only does so to make some very necessary statements - often through sarcasm and his masterful use of language ... everything song has a multitude of layers to explore 🤩
Tim minchin deserves so much more praise than he got, especially in the US. He ranks among the op of the top comedians in my mind. Plus the musical talents. Probably not enough smart people around to push his stuff to the absolute top.

Cont is one of his "newest" works. Hard to find. It is on a Netflix special, though. Cont is just an example of his continuing genius of works. I enjoyed seeing him live a couple of years ago. He donates to a locate charity in the city he performs in, as well.

I always think of Tim as the 2K version of Tom Lehrer, the clever musical satirist of the 50's and 60's who delighted in the quirky wordplay to poke fun at society. Except Tim is funnier, younger, better looking and an Aussie legend.

My next top songs from Tim Minchin would be The Song for Phil Daoust, The Good Book, and Not Perfect. You've already hit this one and Lullaby, so those collectively are my tops for him. He also does a really good version of Hallelujah, and it really is just a great version of that.

Hi, from a new subscriber and fellow fan of Tim Minchin! I first saw him 2 years ago, and was blown away by his talent, both musical and comedy, as well as his writing…I’m a lifelong agnostic who has embraced atheism more as I have aged. I’ve always been a non-believer, but people like Tim Minchin (and you and other TH-camrs), have helped me really solidify my non-belief!

Jmax, your 'Lullaby' reaction just popped up on my suggested list, and I am so glad it did so I could sub to enjoy your journey. I love finding people who appreciate Tim's music as much as I do. In your intro you mention that you love music and are open to checking out a wide variety. With that in mind, I would highly recommend 2 groups and 2 solo artists that, while off the mainstream beaten path, are all incredibly impressive.
The groups are both a capella, but have taken that art to a whole other level. Pentatonix (try 'Hallelujah' to start) and Home Free ( "Man of Constant Sorrow' is a good jumping off point) are amazingly talented and will leave you mind blown how they can do this with just their voices.
The solo artists are IMO the best female vocalists on the planet right now. Sohyang from South Korea and Morissette Amon from the Philippines are both extremely gifted. For intros try Sohyang's 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' and for Morissette start with 'Never Enough' (Wish Bus performance). A happy byproduct of exploring these acts is the fact that they all have devoted fan bases that will flock to your channel, which I assume you would like.

You're going to get a lot of Tim Minchin recommendations. Two you probably won't see as often are "Teenage Years" and "TH-cam Lament". They're not well known songs, but I love them both.
OMG YES Teenage Years!! The songs he did on the seven deadly sins for Mark Watson Makes The World Substantially Better are also fantastic, especially Greed (Balsa Wood & Glue) and Lust (Outstanding Woman)

I grew up ...without the word of Tim Minchin but since finding him my life hasn't really changed but I can openly say he has some mighty fine talent.
The other topic of fan clubs being used as the universal answer to all things, considering the state of the world these varied clubs have the ability to do good things under their respective banners and as mentioned its the extreme types that take it too far and need to dial back the gatekeeper attitude. Yeah I'm not a fan of intersection wearing types but prefer to treat people with respect. 🤔

When I first heard this song? I was like "He's saying what I say and feel." Is he wrong? Dunno, don't care! He resonates with me and that's his "hook" to me, whatever his music or lyrics. If I met him on the street, in a bar, wherever, I'm sure I wouldn't feel any negativity towards him. He's just a plain, down to Earth, regular (and non-religous) Aussie saying as it is (well, according to me). Like him or hate him - your choice, but I like him. He's very, very clever any which way you "observe" him 😜
My cat was diagnosed with a very aggressive and unique form of cancer (long story short, the type of cancer shouldve been really slow growing and almost all cats in research literature only get it once in their life because they die of old age before their body produces those specific cancer cells again.)
This type of cancer is localised in her eyes. When she was 18 months old, she lost one eye to this cancer (already a very young age for this cancer, median age was 10+ years old) and then when she was 8 years old, it came vack. Her veterinary specialist of 40 years had never seen this type of cancer so aggressive before once let alone twice. He was certain that she would have to be put to sleep because of it. I gave her a high dose of pure CBD oil and I kid you not, the tumor that was taking up half her eyeball, shrunk. He gave my cat 2 weeks to live due to the aggressive cancer. That was 3 years ago. We didnt pray. We tried something in hopes it would make her comfortable and we got a miracle. Medical miracles can happen but it doesnt mean that theres a god out there picking singular creatures to save their lives in order to prove their existence. Biology is fucking weird and unpredictable sometimes. Simple as that.
Not related to Tim, but you should react to Matt Corby - Brother (Like a version). One of the best live performances I have ever seen, so beautiful and touching. He is criminally underrated.

Prayer is a wonderful way to absolve yourself of responsibility for actually doing something yourself to help another person and to steal credit for good/beneficial outcomes by doing the bare minimum in regards to giving attention to something. It's a win-win where if it works out alright you can just boldly declare you had a hand in the outcome, and if it doesn't work, well, it just wasn't part of the plan. Or the person in need just didn't believe in themselves enough to make it happen. Or God has another plan. Any number of excuses and possibilities except for the admission that prayer doesn't work.

The point of this song isn't so much Sam or even religion to be honest but an attempt by Tim to include his very large vocabulary into a song, it's more of a love letter to the English language than anything else.
This was a wonderful reaction video. I love knowing this song and what's about to coming up and knowing the TH-camr is about to hear the line that will for sure make them pause and laugh or comment. This song is perfect.

Also the new Broadway show of Matilda he was the entire lyricist. Look up the live version on the TV show late night the song he does live at some of the girls singing with him the song, “when I grow up“ he wrote the Broadway show and the interview and song is short but it’s a totally different Tim but still absolutely fantastic
Not just the lyricist but the composer as well. (“School Song” is one of the cleverest bits of lyric writing ever put on stage.) He also wrote the music for the Groundhog Day musical, which IMO is even better.

Statiscally, intercessory prayer works at the same rate of random chance... unless the person being prayed for knows they are being prayed for, then it works worse than random chance.

This is what I love a out Tim. He gives you a better language to express what you have been feeling or thinking all along. It is hard to think of what to say to believers in the moment but you know there is something that doesn't seem right about their argument. You just have a hard time expressing it clearly. I have loved his work and the work of other Atheists for years and eventually became president of my local atheist community and having a youtube channel. I have done public speaker events, ask an Atheist events at churches, talks to Atheist groups on how to respectfully and productively engage with believers, been interviewed by NPR (I was proud of that one), and much more. It can be wonderful to finally have a deep enough understanding that you can explain the issues you have with a bad argument or destructive idea. It's fun but it also humanized Atheism and breaks so many stigmas when you can explain things like secular humanist or the separation of church and state. Most believers understand and find a way to agree with the desire to reduce the harm caused by religion and it can be healing to connect on that level with them.
I am an atheist, so take my following statements with that info in mind. I agree with Penn from Penn & Teller as for as proselytizing. If you know that someone is putting their life in danger, it is immoral to allow them to do so if they just need info to follow the safer course. My problem with religion is when it affects the laws and politics of a nation. Why should I care who is marrying who? If two or more consenting adults want to touch genitals and/or get married, what business is it of mine? If two people who share a gender want to raise a child, assuming they are good people, why would that be wrong? Along with the previous statements, my biggest problem with religion is that it separates us when we should be trying to solve our problems together. Great reaction BTW😁

Another key part of this song is taking on the logic of the person who is telling the story and following it to its inevitable conclusion. Brilliant! Also, you don't have to respect bad ideas to respect the person. That is an important line to draw in discussions like that

Prayer was tested years ago, they got a group of test subjects, half prayed for something and half didn’t do anything, and the results came out exactly the same. Heard about this when I was young.

I think prayer can be good for a person. It doesn't need to be a religious thing. It can however get things out of your head and off your chest. Sometimes things put into words can lead to clarity.

Sometimes when someone tells me they prayed for something and got it all I want to do is tell them about my sister whose 22 year old daughter was hit by a car going 50 MPH and died 2 days before Christmas. but congratulations to you.
There was a test done some years ago that found that those who pray for things don't bother trying to solve their problems in other ways, so the problems don't get fixed. Those who don't believe in the power of prayer, just get on with fixing things themselves.
