Death Guard limerick time! There once was a primarch called Morty, who thought that all pskyers were naughty, the Khan laughed in his face, so he chased him through space, and now all his legion are poorly.
Our dg player won his first game of 10th. ... He only had to bring 1k and was backed up by 1k csm vs 1k marines & 1k admech. It was csm and a bucket of shit vs sm with a bucket of bolts.
The rest of Gaunts Ghosts is very worth reading/listening Pat! I would recommend Rynns World (one off about the crimson fists), the 4 blood angels books by James Swallow are also quite interesting but older lore for sure. If you want to try an AoS novel Dynasty of Monsters by David Annadale has completely hooked me into AoS and wanting to learn more about the setting
18:50 Each Chaos God has its own favoured number, this was done narratively. However 10th has moved away from points per model to points per unit, that is restricted to 5 and 10. This is a better balancing mechanic, its just as usual GW hate chaos players meme and get hit the most from rule changes. Ref, how long it took CSM to get 2 wounds... Tzeentch = 9 Khorne = 8 Nurgle = 7 Slaanesh = 6
As someone who only plays Age of Sigmar, most of this episode sound like "blah blah blah lasguns". BUT, still enjoyed it! You'll need a guest on to nerd out about AoS with to balance it out!
Another recommendation for Ciaphus Cain: it's very different to Abnett, but are brilliantly written, very funny, and a very different perspective on the 40k universe.
Speaking of having a crashed thunder hawk gun ship as scenery. I’d love to see them re-release the crashed gun ship from the battle for macragge box set.
Call it triple P Painting Phase Pfest I'd love to see you tackle the mirelurk queen, deathclaws and some brotherhood of steel! Do the brotherhood of steel combat patrol!
Finding Death Guard to be okay on the offensive, but the durability that they're known for (both in lore and on tabletop) is badly lacking. T6 isn't enough to make the Blightlords not terrible. Think dropping the contagion aura in favour of the old army-wide 5+ Feel No Pain would fix them nicely. The -1 toughness aura is meaningless most of the time, especially since most of the DG weapons have Lethal Hits anyway.
Not a 40k audible but fantastic to listen to is the last stand of the tin can sailors by James D Hornfischer. Another book in the same vein to read is to the last round, the battle of the Inmjin river and the last stand of the Glorious Glosters unfortunately it’s not on a audiobook
Hmmm... great idea! I totally forgot that Eisenhorn is now available as all audio books? [Including Pariah?] Time to get stuck in again! PS: Harlon Nayl should be played by Amos from the Expanse!
The 3 bonus plague marines were included in the boarding patrol box, which made them round out to 10. It was a much better plan than the combat patrol, with the three million iffy poxwalker sculpts. Unfortunately, like most boarding patrol boxes, it was for sale for a whole 20 minutes. Hopefully after the successful Leviathan launch, maybe availability will improve, although with the current rules, and no codex scheduled for them in the next year, I don't expect death guard to be playable at all without some major changes. Without significant rules changes, the plague marines need at least a 25% discount, and that's just to compete with middle of the road armies.
Haven't seen Beast Master (except for references in community) but the description of the hug and munching sounds like the Sparas out of Carnival Row season 2
Now I really want an armored containers set lol! Huge fan of a bridge too far! Loved the chat this episode, you all are so entertaining on your own, even with no guest!
And youre description of paras is spot on two of my mates who are paratroopers (one whos sadly passed on) dressed exactly like that! Right down to the desert boots!
Talking of Yorkshire Accents in Audio Books. Ciaphas Cain's friend, the Lord General Zyvan nis basically Sean Bean. Every scene he's in goes something like this: "..'ow 'bout we kick in't door & ruff 'em all up good 'n proper! If ya don like that, I'll chin ya!"
Round about 22.00 - the reinforcements set was originally three limited Plague Marines with some artwork. They then sold that out, put the three marines in a box... eeeerrrm... and didn't reduce the price! I'm not too bothered about my Death Guard. Or to put it another way, I'm not going to get into a fit about it!
Regarding book recommendations for Pat, if you haven't already gotten to them, I HIGHLY recommend the Ravenor series that comes after Eisenhorn. I love the Eisenhorn series, but the Ravenor series puts them to shame. I think they are the best things Dan Abnett has produced. They are my favorite 40k novels I've read and it's not close.
@@thepaintingphase tyrant of the Hollow worlds and the relatively new Huron Blackheart book He is my favourite character in narrative and deserves a new model
I think the first Bequin novel is possibly Abnett at his most perfect, in the series. It is just so evocative. I loved how abnett stretched the inquisition so much - the short stories collected in the Magos are wonderful too (the one at the carneval run by Gregor's friends, a young Gregor as a locum inquisitor, and so on). Pariah (and the second and third Ravenor novels) really benefit from the same situation as those shorts - focusing in on specific locations, really delivering world building, building on the sector Abnett really has thought through. It's why I also really love how BL are really developing Varangantua through the Crime range. It's a realistic version of a hive - not the 2000ad Nikolai Dante punk extremity of necromunda's hive city- but a kind of run down old capital, with real districts, real bureaucracy, real people groups. It allows a kind of introspection towards 40k BL doesn't often do. Highly highly recommended - www.trackofwords.com/2021/09/19/warhammer-crime-the-range-so-far/ The other writer everyone should read is of course Peter Fehervari - www.trackofwords.com/2020/10/31/a-travellers-guide-to-the-dark-coil/
May be a bit late on the black templar 11 model sword brethren squad issue but my take is this: unit composition is either 1x Sword Bro Castellan + 4 Sword Bros, or 1x Sword Bro Castellan + 10 Sword Bros. 1 box can be built as 1 sword bro castellan and 4 sword bros or as 5 sword bros. So I think GW's intention is that to make an 11 man sword bro squad, you buy 2 boxes to build as sword bros and the specific castellan model and that's your 11 man squad. The way I see it, your sword brethren castellan works the same as a sergeant would in an assault intercessor squad - it has some additional wargear choices but no abilities. But it's called a castellan for flavour. You could then also attach an actual castellan (lieutenant) to your sword bro squad, and have a squad with 2 "castellans" in it for additional complexity.
i feel like Death Guard have had their core concept changed, they used to weaken you and were resilient. Now they are the poisoners and infect the board. They cause sticky objectives that create a minus 1 toughness aura and most of the army has a way to auto would units on hit rolls of 6. im looking forward to working out how im going to use them in the new edition. Also the 7 plague marine box makes a little more sense when you think about the fact the unit icon bearer is now a separate unit.
I also think, the Forge World demon engines that are now legends are a death knell for their models. With how much Forge world is now out of production (the entire AOS range and greater demons) I can't help but think they will also fade into obscurity unfortunately
@@jamesespinosa690 Its why i made sure recently to grab the older kits i want for my collection. Thank god i got a Plague Hulk and Tamurkhan on toad dragon in time!
I buy 90% of my models from a certain used Warhammer dealer. And they've always had just a TON of Death Guard. So this leads me to believe that because they were starters for 8th edition, there is much more DG out there compared to everything else. There are a lot of DG armies in people's closets, so GW wants to discourage people from using them. The start of 10th is a sales opportunity and they can't make the most of it if all that used DG is a good army to use.
I would really like an episode of taking a resin model from it's package to the paint table. And all the steps inbetween. Maybe with that Custodes tank
There's decent food with reasonable prices at UKGE if you head to the carpark outside the front of the Hilton, loads of street food vans with some cracking choices.
Those three death guard were sold as a collectors limited edition box set at the beginning of 8th. One of the poses just looks like a mirrored pose from easy to build kit in the first starter set.
I've found a few funny things in the new datasheets. For example; did you know that if you take a flamer on an assault marine or storm guardian they can't attack in combat because they replaced their only melee weapon.
Love the Gaunts Ghosts books. Its a real shame GW wont embrace all these different regiments and show more of them off. Peachy you deffo need to do another set of "convert your guard" to look at some of the more unique units from books like the Ghosts etc.
More and more of Geoffs background coming out, so Im guessing Irish Guards then RIR? Faugh A Ballagh! The Deathguard 7 man squads are supposed to be a nod to Papa Nurgle, so I dont kniw where they got this multiples of 5 from, hope they sort that out as it breaks the narrative.
Death Guard were done dirty. the rules make no sense, and their damage output is anemic at best. secondaries reward fast armies substantially and DG are the slowest there is. Best models in the game though
The 7 plague marines pers box to keep myself saine I have to keep thinking I get two extra per box for different weapons. Edit: Yup loved trading stuff for little things like that when I was in the US Army. Was very much a fun hobby to get something neat to show you have been there and help relations between forces.
Yes, Death Guard really are that bad! As my largest army, they really don’t perform well on the table. Sub par unit and faction rules. Just compare them to WE and regular CSM rules, it’s just insulting. ….clearly they gave DG to the intern or they wrote them at 14:30pm on a Friday! 😂
Pat the Sgt Major is the important man in the regiment. He looks after the men. In the units I have touched on usually address the officers as 'Mr'. Even the cooks have to do the fitness training and achieve a shoot score like all the other marines.
I fell for DG when 7th was a thing and we had no codex, just an add on to CSM. I fell for the lore, The internal battle between Morty and Typhon (his OG name) and then the blessings of Nurgle and how this changed the army. Its crazy how in Horus Heresy, DG have a 5+ FNP (4+ once a game with added bonuses) what's changed in 10k years? more so when so many other models have a FNP. the -1 T doesn't mean much in this Ed when a lot of models have additional toughness, mainly vehicles. We lost the rules that make DG...DG. A slow moving tide of the inevitable death, unrelenting. moving and shooting with no penalty while the enemy believe their most accurate of fire is simply ignored. As the enemy stand and watch the slow cloud of flies move in.... What happened?!
@@joriankell1983 I have not even mentioned a codex. These rules should of been sorted before the release for all armies. Keeping all in that 45/55 sweet spot. Awesome chat, gentlemen. It's such a pleasure to listen to you guys talk and enjoy the hobby.
Also: What Painting Phase Phest definitely needs is a waffle stand. ;)
(And no, we're not calling it PP-Fest!)
Another great show. Look forward to them every week. Keep up the good work gents.
Death Guard limerick time!
There once was a primarch called Morty,
who thought that all pskyers were naughty,
the Khan laughed in his face,
so he chased him through space,
and now all his legion are poorly.
Sensational 👏👏👏👏🪰
@@thepaintingphase Thanks.
Our dg player won his first game of 10th.
...
He only had to bring 1k and was backed up by 1k csm vs 1k marines & 1k admech. It was csm and a bucket of shit vs sm with a bucket of bolts.
So it was CSM vs Marines, with two cheerleader armies on the side. Admech and DG are about as useless as each other in 10th
Great episode lads - plus potential for a "Phased Phest" in the future
Tzeentch = 9 Khorne = 8 Nurgle = 7 Slaanesh = 6
As someone who only plays Age of Sigmar, most of this episode sound like "blah blah blah lasguns". BUT, still enjoyed it! You'll need a guest on to nerd out about AoS with to balance it out!
Yep, I can imagine it would sound like that, as a staunch AoS and fantasy fan…..most of it was blah blah to me too lol - peachy

Painting Phase Pfest
I'd love to see you tackle the mirelurk queen, deathclaws and some brotherhood of steel!
I think those three plague marines Geoff was talking about are from the Conquest magazine. I seem to remember that was three.
Hmmm...
They were originally a limited edition set of 3 that have subsequently been recycled in a number of ways. Hence why they’re so high priced too.
Haven't seen Beast Master (except for references in community) but the description of the hug and munching sounds like the Sparas out of Carnival Row season 2
So who is the GW rule writer with the hard on for Iron Hands? They got rules at the end of 9th that made them insane to play against.
Peachy and Geoff’s laugh at the start has the power to open doors (slightly)!
Woop woop, another video to watch while I paint. Thanks, you bunch of fabulous folks 🥳
I’ve only listened to a few audiobooks and the accent I seemed to notice the most was Eastern Europe, particularly for human crews on ships
Now I really want an armored containers set lol! Huge fan of a bridge too far! Loved the chat this episode, you all are so entertaining on your own, even with no guest!
Thanks so much, very kind.
And youre description of paras is spot on two of my mates who are paratroopers (one whos sadly passed on) dressed exactly like that! Right down to the desert boots!
Sorry for the loss of your friend - Geoff
@@thepaintingphase thank you, he was an amazing guy a great trooper, and a top motorcycle rider to boot.
Just curious who was Geoff referring to when he said the chap sitting in that chair was a marine? Was it a guest?
Yes one of the lovely fellas behind the game ‘War on Terra’.
Thanks guys!@@thepaintingphase
Talking of Yorkshire Accents in Audio Books. Ciaphas Cain's friend, the Lord General Zyvan nis basically Sean Bean. Every scene he's in goes something like this:
"..'ow 'bout we kick in't door & ruff 'em all up good 'n proper! If ya don like that, I'll chin ya!"
bloody hell! that gasmasks at the couple in car story :D
I'm hearing Ravenor mentioned alot, I'll definitely check it out!
@@thepaintingphase tyrant of the Hollow worlds and the relatively new Huron Blackheart book
He is my favourite character in narrative and deserves a new model
Highly highly recommended - www.trackofwords.com/2021/09/19/warhammer-crime-the-range-so-far/
The other writer everyone should read is of course Peter Fehervari - www.trackofwords.com/2020/10/31/a-travellers-guide-to-the-dark-coil/
@@Steampunkdz possibly Brooks's weakest books sadly :(
May be a bit late on the black templar 11 model sword brethren squad issue but my take is this: unit composition is either 1x Sword Bro Castellan + 4 Sword Bros, or 1x Sword Bro Castellan + 10 Sword Bros.
I am hopeful. Thank you for having this discussion.

i feel like Death Guard have had their core concept changed, they used to weaken you and were resilient.
This ⬆️ - Geoff
I've started to take all my spare plague marines and convert them into the support characters
I've got a banner bearer and a plague surgeon so far
I also think, the Forge World demon engines that are now legends are a death knell for their models. With how much Forge world is now out of production (the entire AOS range and greater demons) I can't help but think they will also fade into obscurity unfortunately
@@Cribbs_Corner I think you are correct!
Mentally reading 'In't grim darkness o't far future, thurs only war!'
I had a headache..but it went away. Best 40k quote ever.
I would really like an episode of taking a resin model from it's package to the paint table. And all the steps inbetween. Maybe with that Custodes tank
That’s a great idea.
I’d rather watch paint dry. In fact, I’d like both equally so just leave the stream running, pointed at the model until it’s dry.
There's decent food with reasonable prices at UKGE if you head to the carpark outside the front of the Hilton, loads of street food vans with some cracking choices.
It was First Sgt. Dan Daly, I believe, who instigated a charge against the Germans at Belleau Wood, with the words: "Do you want to live forever?".
I wonder if the 5/10 v 7’s is someone at GW “borrowing” a little too hard from OPR which is mainly multiples of 5, cos it works for them….
Those three death guard were sold as a collectors limited edition box set at the beginning of 8th. One of the poses just looks like a mirrored pose from easy to build kit in the first starter set.
Funny and awesome video again. Quick question after listening to eisenhorn on audible how long is a standard year in 40k is it the same as our years?
I could be wrong but I think a lot of folks go by the Terran year. But that might just be me getting my head meat confused again
“Nothing wrong with that documentary” - amazing!
16:20 Peach's Reaction to that info is just the best
I've found a few funny things in the new datasheets. For example; did you know that if you take a flamer on an assault marine or storm guardian they can't attack in combat because they replaced their only melee weapon.
Best episode yet- can we have more books and forces discussion
I find it interesting that the state of death guard is resulting in a fair number of people posting their own datasheets and rules.
FAB is the call of the Ranger!
Where does Geoff get his tshirts?
Hi Boss, I get the majority of them from the fantastic peeps at ‘Last Exit to Nowhere’. They have an awesome range of shirts.
Death Guard were done dirty. the rules make no sense, and their damage output is anemic at best. secondaries reward fast armies substantially and DG are the slowest there is. Best models in the game though
Love the army stories! I’m in the Canadian Army and i can relate haha.
The 7 plague marines pers box to keep myself saine I have to keep thinking I get two extra per box for different weapons. Edit: Yup loved trading stuff for little things like that when I was in the US Army. Was very much a fun hobby to get something neat to show you have been there and help relations between forces.
This is a great episode, and why I signed up for Patreon

@@thepaintingphase sadly I don’t have quite THAT much sway 😂 I’ve tried!
Would highly recommend the Cuaphas Cain novels for Pat to read.
What about a 40k version of Dads army?
Pat the Sgt Major is the important man in the regiment. He looks after the men. In the units I have touched on usually address the officers as 'Mr'. Even the cooks have to do the fitness training and achieve a shoot score like all the other marines.
Honestly surprised why they did away with the sprue of 3 easy to build plague marines as well as the easy to build poxwalkers, those were great.
The codexes aren't even out yet.
@@joriankell1983 I know. your point is?
