I met Carmine back in the mid ‘80’s, real cool cat, he was doing a drum clinic in Hamilton,Ontario Canada, just after he left Ozzy’s band and formed King Kobra. He looks like he hasn’t changed much at all, still a hard-hitting power drummer. 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Carmine toured in 1969 with Led Zepplin. Zep was the opening act for Vanilla Fudge that lasted 2 weeks i saw that show in Albuquerque. Sitll remember pretty much the whole thing. That's why i didnt do drug's nor smoke weed. Im 67 years old n i remember the whole show.

What l see is a drummer completely full of himself... Yes Carmine is one of the greats but still has not learned the word humble. l watch gentleman like lan Paice, Carl Palmer etc who want to give back to the profession that has gave them so much. When l watch Carmine in this video, my personal opinion he was so busy showing off he totally lost the feel Bonham had in this song. To me the thing that made Bonham so unique was not what not only what he did do but what he didn`t do...

I'm not usually one to bad mouth other drummers, but this is just awful...lol His playing is like a beginner who learned Led Zeppelin, but doesn't actually have the physical capabilities to replicate it. And another sad thing is that Black Dog is one of Zeppelin's simplest tunes...transition wise that is. It's literally just "Verse, jam, verse, jam, verse, jam...jam...verse etc."....and he still couldn't get it down.
I'm a 30+ years drummer. I give him 10 for twelling his sticks lol. Seemed more like a jam night with drummers who don't know 90% of the songs played lol

I was lucky enough to see him do a drum clinic in the 11th grade, in a tiny music store in my hometown. Aside from being blown away (the Octa-Plus kit was his at the time), it's no wonder I have hearing loss now.
Carmine, is a great dummer being very skilful and technical as what we see. However, this is a classic real life demo of over cooking the original song to the point of it being terribly bad to listen to. It’s like a drum solo and the ‘black dog’ song is just filling in the gaps.
John Paul Jones, arguably the most underrated musician of all time was instrumental (excuse the pun) in creating the riff and therefore it’s original time signature. It isn’t a standard 4/4 “beat” although it *sounds* like it... This version is an orgy of egos and it shows how brilliant LZ were.
Yeah, Robert plant Live wasn't any better himself. Robert could nail his shit the first 2 years ,even Live at Royal Albert hall he nailed it, the highest point of his career. After , he just stayed low key and got weaker and weaker.

Vanilla Fudge took Zeppelin on their debut American tour when that shark incident occurred. Bonham was took a little of the bass drum heavy approach from Appice... something that he did that he didn't know he influenced Bonham. Vanilla Fudge was big in their time briefly...only good or internet radio will play them because really they were am acquired taste but there influence is felt thru other musicians. Mark Stein is an incredible vocalist, Tim Bogert was kind of the Billy Sheehan of his time. Zep took a lot of stuff from various artists and literally made it their own.

The first time I watched this I was floored at how bad Carmine played. I actually ended up watching it about ten times because I was so intrigued by how this happened. This is my take on it. Carmine came out and immediately tried to establish his dominance and control, started showing off and even gave a couple false starts with his sticks. I see what he tried to do with the song, to make it his own interpretation. But he failed to pull it off and completely ruined the song. That's called being a selfish musician, which Bonham certainly was not!I like how the bass player started hitting bad chords, at 3:27 and again at 5:23 the guitarist did one too at 3:34 intentionally I believe just to get in the spirit of the song being already ruined.
This is so lousy played...... a shame to use Bonzo's Name by playing such a horrable Version of this Zep Milestone...... no groove.....no flow......no no no........
After Bonzo died and the rumors swirled about that Carmine Appice might take his spot, the standard surface explanation for his not being given the chair was never a knock on Carmine but that the rest of the band were too great of friends with Bonzo to ever replace him. No doubt that is true, but I'd always also thought that Appice's PERSONALITY would not have fit in with the group. Now, watching this, I wonder if the lads also realized that Appice's (lack of ) MUSICALITY would not have fit, either.

he's struggling because he doesn't understand the simplicity of that groove is what makes the beat so special. The guitar is all over the place, and Bonham would usually just followed Page, but moments like this tune and Kashmir were brilliant because the drumming counterpoints with those complicated guitar parts or parts that were in another time signature, on top of having huge, resonant drum sounds REALLY make them stand out in an otherworldly way.

When Phil Collins played with "The Musical Box" in Geneve after 35 years, he needed to rehearse for some hours. Carmine obviously did not prepare for that Song.
Along with Paul Whaley (Blue Cheer) this guy invented power drumming and some fine rock tricks, period. We can be grateful for that. Nobody ever played such heavy stuff back in '67 (three plain years before Led Zep).
He didn't serve the song by dropping into the pocket and groove that is Black Dog. He was more about the one lick he kept doing and looking around seeing the reactions people had as he did it. Bonham would make eye contact because of a mutual feel moment. And yes, Carmine rushed it hard. I can see where as drummers get older and maybe insecure because they're question of relevance they may over do it but whatever. He's done his thing. pretty honarable just to be asked to do such an event. I saw him at a clinic at music land in Bel Air MD in like mid-late 80's, it was cool, but I was turned off when he ragged on Vinnie his brother who I feel has a much more original identifiable style. Fuck it, so many drummers are dicks and have little good to say about other drummers. I think one is born to be a true natural feel player that can move or make another person move to a beat or feel.

Geez, Carmine blew it. Granted it's a difficult song to play, but for someone that claims every chance he gets to have taught Bonham everything he knew....
Nah man, I learned that song in my second year playing drums, and I'm by no means a prodigy. What's hard to capture is Bonham's feel, but the actual notes being played aren't that difficult. Any intermediate rock drummer that practiced the song beforehand could have done much better than Carmine did here.
I hate to say it but this really didn’t work. Messy playing all round and the singer’s voice breaking, he just couldn’t hit the notes. This was a mess.

The first time I watched this I was floored at how bad Carmine played. I actually ended up watching it about ten times because I was so intrigued by how this happened. This is my take on it. Carmine came out and immediately tried to establish his dominance and control, started showing off and even gave a couple false starts with his sticks. I see what he tried to do with the song, to make it his own interpretation. But he failed to pull it off and completely ruined the song. That's called being a selfish musician, which Bonham certainly was not!I like how the bass player started hitting bad chords, at 3:27 and again at 5:23 the guitarist did one too at 3:34 intentionally I believe just to get in the spirit of the song being already ruined.

After Bonzo died and the rumors swirled about that Carmine Appice might take his spot, the standard surface explanation for his not being given the chair was never a knock on Carmine but that the rest of the band were too great of friends with Bonzo to ever replace him. No doubt that is true, but I'd always also thought that Appice's PERSONALITY would not have fit in with the group. Now, watching this, I wonder if the lads also realized that Appice's (lack of ) MUSICALITY would not have fit, either.
Actually it HAD to do with drumming ability....bottom line is Bonham was a MUCH better drummer than Carmine.
Come on Carmine has been in many bands and has done pretty good shit.

Also, to the singer. Those vocals are hard as hell. No reason to kill yourself on the high vocal everytime it comes around.
This shows how good Bonzo was and how he made it seem easy. Carmine apparently is having a hell of a hard time with this song.
he's struggling because he doesn't understand the simplicity of that groove is what makes the beat so special. The guitar is all over the place, and Bonham would usually just followed Page, but moments like this tune and Kashmir were brilliant because the drumming counterpoints with those complicated guitar parts or parts that were in another time signature, on top of having huge, resonant drum sounds REALLY make them stand out in an otherworldly way.
I'm sure Bonham even had a hell of a time with this song lmao....and it shows in The Song Remains the Same

When Phil Collins played with "The Musical Box" in Geneve after 35 years, he needed to rehearse for some hours. Carmine obviously did not prepare for that Song.

Along with Paul Whaley (Blue Cheer) this guy invented power drumming and some fine rock tricks, period. We can be grateful for that. Nobody ever played such heavy stuff back in '67 (three plain years before Led Zep).

He didn't serve the song by dropping into the pocket and groove that is Black Dog. He was more about the one lick he kept doing and looking around seeing the reactions people had as he did it. Bonham would make eye contact because of a mutual feel moment. And yes, Carmine rushed it hard. I can see where as drummers get older and maybe insecure because they're question of relevance they may over do it but whatever. He's done his thing. pretty honarable just to be asked to do such an event. I saw him at a clinic at music land in Bel Air MD in like mid-late 80's, it was cool, but I was turned off when he ragged on Vinnie his brother who I feel has a much more original identifiable style. Fuck it, so many drummers are dicks and have little good to say about other drummers. I think one is born to be a true natural feel player that can move or make another person move to a beat or feel.

Geez, Carmine blew it. Granted it's a difficult song to play, but for someone that claims every chance he gets to have taught Bonham everything he knew....
Nah man, I learned that song in my second year playing drums, and I'm by no means a prodigy. What's hard to capture is Bonham's feel, but the actual notes being played aren't that difficult. Any intermediate rock drummer that practiced the song beforehand could have done much better than Carmine did here.
It's 16 beats every break. People make it so complicated, when it's super easy.
