    You had me at 14:30 "players that don't do so well at, go and do whatever you want".... So I could literally give a player freedom and they would quit because they "feel directionless."

    • @Shadeius
      @Shadeius ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +8

      Yes. It all depends on the player's personality. Some people aren't just good at setting their own goals to do thus if you don't provide proper direction that there's something worthwhile to do they will quit.

    • @radircs9978
      @radircs9978 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yes a lot of people strugel with an to open concept, in special when they are not aware of there options. Giving them direction to lern the knowlage what is an option to them, they lern how to navigate them self over time with familiarity to the game.

    • @Wolta
      @Wolta 58 นาทีที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yeah my friend's GF couldn't get into Elden Ring even though she was really into Dark Souls. She didn't like that the game didn't point her in a certain direction, so she didn't know where she was "supposed to" go. Kind of interesting to hear since I've never fathomed that concept, since I'm big on freedom in open world games.

    • @SuspiciousScout
      @SuspiciousScout 54 นาทีที่ผ่านมา

      @@Wolta I feel somewhat similar, but different at the same time. I enjoy games that give me clear, defined goals to complete rather than making up my own. A good example would be, say, a level-by-level platformer like Mario. Just reach the end of the stage, obvious goal. Even in an open world game, if I'm given guidance on where I should start my journey or having an obvious path of progression, that helps a lot. Just putting me into the middle of something with little to no guidance just overwhelms me, and I just don't know what to do.

    • @CatManZael
      @CatManZael 30 นาทีที่ผ่านมา

      @@Wolta This was why I didn't enjoy Elden Ring at all despite loving all of the other Souls games, for a similar reason. I followed the paths that graces showed, and smashed my face against Margit. Eventually I got the message and went exploring. I found the lake dragon, and took the message to go somewhere else. I found the teleporting chest, and suffered my way back to Limgrave. I wandered to the castle on the southern tip of the area and after many hours, found a dead end and nothing for my build.
      I could go on, but in this I also managed to not find anything involving flasks, and almost managed to miss my bell for Spirit Ashes entirely. I did not continue after I beat Godrick. I opened that door at the end and saw another wide open zone, and rather than feel the call of adventure, I groaned and quit. Maybe one day I'll go back, but every time I think I will, I just think of something else I'd rather do.
      I like open world games normally, but I personally feel Elden Ring did not do it well.

    3:15 IM SORRY WHAT? I was enjoying the intro having no idea this was 3h long until I heard this and laughed bc i thought you were joking until i moved the mouse haha
    First of all, Josh, you're amazing and very passionate. I really really appretiate the content you make. I absolutely enjoyed the last video about the top mmos based on THE CHART.
    I have a love/hate relationship with RuneScape. I love the IDEA of the game, all it represent, the feelings it brings, but I dont enjoy playing it that much. It's a weird feeling of me wanting to like playing it but I struggle. Now, don't get me wrong, I've played a considerable amount of hours either RS3 or OSRS. The first thing I played was OSRS, I was hooked for the first quests, killing Vampyres, helping Goblins pick a colour of armour, etc., it was all so charming and fun. After a few days, I hopped back in and I just stared at the screen thinking... what now? Then I stopped playing. After a while, I remembered the fun time I had with RS so I tried RS3 that time, I LOOVED the quests so so much, the whole battle system was a bit meh for me but i said "ok" and ignored it. The TP's were good, the longer running time was cheff kiss* but I felt lonely (something I didn't feel at all in OSRS). Almost no one was around, and if i found someone, they were minding their own business and didn't want to talk, also, the game randomly freezed when i teleported forcing me to reopen the game.
    This video might just be what I need to hear in order to come back to RS, at least to RS3. Again, thank you Josh for the dedication, I'll be posting my thoughts in 3 hours, 1 minute, 41 seconds.

    58:54 My OS3 experience was leveling starting combat, going to a wiki guide to see efficiency boosts and seeing other skills were needed. I then proceeded to follow those threads to try and create a spreadsheet of minimum levels needed to 1) level those other skills while 2) having all the neccesarry efficiency boosters for those skills. This was so i could minimize as much as oossible any inefficient skilling.
    After a week i realized id spent like 40 hours putting together a skilling flowchart for a game id spent like 2 hours actually playing, and would already be like 99 in strength if i hadnt bothered, and fucked off back to OSRS.
    So i feel quite called out here.

    Still waiting for the premiere to start. As to "should you," I'm actually curious. I heard things have actually improved since I stopped playing.
    For me personally, I don't expect I'll go back. I've successfully escaped from the "nobody quits RS" meme. I stopped playing in September 2023, the month that the Hero Pass dropped. After that, I really only logged in once to do a wilderness event and capped resources for the clan citadel. I am very slow at getting myself to switch games, so for Jagex to convince me to drop what I'm doing and go back to RuneScape - that's a very steep task.
    Playing other games had me realize just how much of the time I spent playing RS was really just me tolerating the things thrown at me. The grind is a big part of RuneScape's core identity and I was all for that, which kept me there for a decade. It was after I quit that I saw their efforts into asking players for their opinions. Perhaps they really did start listening to us. But again for me personally, that's a little bit too late.
    With the exception of introspection, I'm personally terrible at being a critic. The things I've complained about tend to be in hindsight after someone else has brought it up. This holds true with the games I play, and the employee surveys I get at work.

    • @MisterZimbabwe
      @MisterZimbabwe 6 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      Something a friend of mine and I came to realize is that the gameplay of RS is not the main draw. The super simplicity of it is there to give us something to socialize with others over. Without the social aspect, RS falls apart.

    damn i didnt expect to watch all of that in 1 sitting... great video as always. there are some things which arent correct or accurate but 99% of the information is true. the power creep making some stuff irrelevant is truly sad but i think thats part of life. back when you were 5 and were playing with toys vs when you are 25 and are no longer playing with those same toys is how i see some of the older minigames. they were fun back then but now you have simply outgrown them and that is perfectly fine.
    the quests being locked behind such long skilling grinds is a double edged sword. they could make it have no requirements and slap huge rewards and people would complain that they had to skill for hours upon hours for similair rewards from a different quest. while giving something lvl60 or 75 requirment in 1 or multiple skills seems insane to the new players. but it is what it is.
    overall enjoyed the video very much. also F treasurehunter all my homies hate treasure hunter.

    To be fair, most modern MMOs change so much your previous high level characters become too difficult to pick up again after a couple of years. And FFXIV is a great example of this as it has so many expansions and the super customisable UI as well. I had to start a whole new character when I accidentally (long story) picked up Dawntrail recently, after dropping out after Stormblood. Because I had the same issues you highlighted here with RS3.

    I was curious for a while why is Runescape 3 so much less popular than Old School Runescape and how it's actually to play these days so thanks Josh!

    I played rs3 some years ago before they decided to fully bring osrs back, the last thing i remember playing was some winter area mini game, looking at old school being a memeber i believe its winterdolt you had to walk through a force field and can't enter with certain stuff thats all i rememeber, but in old school thats a members exclusive, in rs3 a few memebers skills can be upgraded up until a point, i remember doing a quest with guthix in it and thats memebers only in osrs, leveling up is alot faster and making 1 mil gp didnt take long on a beginner account but bonds costs way more than osrs, the fighting style in rs3 graphically looks better rs3 look graphically better in all ways, i remember their being a duel sword weapon that osrs doesnt have thats a upside and it attacked fast, this was some years ago when they just released after beta so idk how it is now but rs3 was fun, when they brought osrs back i left it alone and regained my childhood, thats why osrs is popular alot of us played this back when it first came out in the late 90s, both are good same kind of chill fun, one is new aged the other is old school
    Ps edit: i kinda remember why i hung up rs3, there was a quest you had to slide on ice to a rock to reach another or jump over something and i was just like F this b.s, one of those puzzle like type quests..

    One of the major pain points talked about, the interface, isn't a problem for me. Why? When all this was implemented they still had the options to revert it. Same with combat. I play RuneScape 3 like I played RuneScape 2, somewhat out of spite and somewhat because I just don't want the added complexity. The issue is that when I reverted those updates that was still an option. I don't think you can enable the so-called "Legacy Interface" anymore, and the only option I have on my account is to disable it. Thankfully it's seemingly locked to my account and not my client.
    Secondly, regarding the skill creep and Ironman...One is a condition of and one is a cure turned accelerator for people playing the game as if it were a single player RPG. As talked about the moments between skilling allowed you to plan and organize, while actually skilling allowed you to sit and talk and goof off. You were rewarded for good planning by getting great conversations and interactions with other people. Cutting out preparation meant people just jumped straight into the skilling and focused entirely on that. Making skilling into a minigame that required attention instead of an idle activity killed that interaction even further, as you had to have the mouse ready all the time, making it harder to type.
    The biggest difference a viewer will see but likely never notice when watching RuneScape 2 and RuneScape 3 is that people sit around talking a lot in RuneScape 2. Meanwhile in RuneScape 3 there's no reason to talk *at all* if you're playing Ironman, because you can't help or get help by doing trading or group kills. I've been playing RuneScape on the same account since 2003. My friends list has more dead accounts than a graveyard has headstones. Giving newer or lower level players stuff to help them along is how that friends list got so long, but with so many Ironman accounts these days I trade away high level stuff for free like maybe once a year. If that. As an elder it's insane to me that I can't even *give* away full sets of Rune +3 armour these days.
    The skill creep came about because people kept leaning more and more towards that solo play. Players were burning through the skills, getting the capes, lighting the beacons. The minigames became cognitive drains, their entrances cluttered the map, and the players became resentful of group activities. Dungeoneering became more about getting into the good part of the Mining Guild rather than a quick roguelike session with your friends. The mining update and smithing rework pushed people to buy from bot accounts rather than do the work themselves, inflating the hell out of ores and bars. Invention slowed inflation, but only maxed accounts use it because it's another end-game skill that requires several others to be at a high level to make it worthwhile. Varrock only has travellers going to the Grand Exchange before teleporting off, Lumbridge has people teleporting in only to go to the Fremennik lands, Falador has bots walking back and forth from the Mining Guild to the bank, and even the old standby of Karamja only has maybe one high end player going directly from the boat to the new dungeon on top of the volcano. Everyone is alone because they're all skilling.

    I played only for short while when i was a kid, but i always wanted to play again, so i made an ironman account a month ago, payed a membership... and i was paralyzed for a bit what to actually do... then i decided to do all the quests, i set it on timeline and i think i have the best time i ever could have.. but seeing absolutely no players in minigames or skilling areas i remember from back when i was a kid makes me sad (and i know they are filled with people in osrs from the videos of content creators)... i usually feel like i am alone not only bcs i play as ironman and cannot interact with ppl, but often i just dont see any other players around.. its weird

    I mostly stuck with RS3 because I didn't want to restart my account and the evo of combat ended up maturing well and I had a max cape before necromancy. I actually really like rs3 lore and whenever I come back I get to enjoy new lore development.
