Detroit Hudson's Site expected to be complete in 2024 despite challenges, changes

- Over the years, Downtown Detroit has gone through some major transformation, all in a bid to revive the city after it declared bankruptcy back in 2013.
I’m From Chicago, But I’m always in Detroit I have family there, But man I like the skyline they have now Smaller buildings around but close together. It’s still nice and wit this building being built it will look even better sure it’s not 900 feet, But 685 feet Thts pretty good too 💯
Chicago has 26 skyscrapers taller than the Ren Cen, soon to be 28. I’m happy to see my hometown finally getting some fresh architecture.
Probably would be 40 if our (Chicago) politicians would stop making developers downsize their developments by as much as 350 feet. I am happy to see Detroit get a new tall skyscraper since the city is one of my favorite downtowns to visit.
I think it’s unfair to compare Detroit with Chicago. Chicago is a much larger city and has continued to build in every decade. Whereas Detroit has only now resumed significant construction within the city limits.
I’m from Chicago and visit Detroit, im glad they getting things straight because Chicago need other cities around it to help make the rust belt comeback
Hey I'm with you on that I'm from Grand Rapids Michigan right between Chicago and Detroit and I got family in both cities but it's still going to be a little bit longer for Detroit to get back to the days when Detroit and Chicago was the two big cities in the Midwest because you got Indianapolis and Columbus which has passed Detroit in population and there downtown area is probably a little bit ahead of Detroit right now
Absolutely, but let’s call it The Lake Belt because no other region employs a negative moniker to identify itself. You never hear “Hurricane Belt” or “Drought Belt” being used by people in those areas. We have the largest source of freshwater in the world. That should be our calling card. Also there are Great Lakes cities (other than Chicago) which if they were on the East Coast would be considered thriving: Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Columbus, even Grand Rapids.
I lived in the New York City area for nearly a decade. There are plenty of dumpy towns along the East Coast, but those people along the coast have a ton of pride. They’re not going to allow the negative aspects of their region to define them. We should do the same here in the Lake Belt.
This most definitely will bring people across the country to visit Detroit; I can see Detroit coming back like they were in the 60s-80s.

It should be very nice, if you walk around downtown even presently, downtown is really looking nice lately, even Gucci is going to be going in right behind the building of this new structure, we live downtown and absolutely love the views from our high-rise condo anymore, the lighting at night is particularly spectacular, our visitors and guests love the view from our windows, as do we…It’s really nice living downtown.

In the late 1920s the Fisher and book towers were supposed to be the tallest buildings in the world at 800 and 1000 feet but didn't happen due to the great depression
As this is exciting. It's sad the original Hudson building was demolished
I totally agree with you. The Hudson's building was more than big enough to have Compuware in it as well as many of the other businesses around that area.
Yes,and I personally hiked-up TWENTY-FOUR floors of unclad,hard concrete stairs every morning to strap boxes of explosive copper tubes to the support beams at my workstation on the 24th floor in a building withOUT a single elevator on the premises!! I strapped around 300 pounds of explosives to the support beams,during the entire project!! The four sub basements were all FLOODED with FIFTEEN years worth of accumulated rainfall,and when we went down there and cut the floodlights on,my Daddy quipped:"What they expect US to do down here;SWIM?!?" 4 months of non-stop sump-pumping alleviated that problem though.

I would not be surprised that GM has something to do with this project scaling back just enough so the GM Renaissance center would remain the tallest. I could be wrong but I think they cut a deal with Dan Gilbert on this because of that. I've also heard that GM was also responsible for Detroit scrapping it's streetcar system. So I think GM has probably been a double edged sword with Detroit as in it was one of the entities that yes helped the city grow and helped put the city on the map but at the same time hindered certain projects.

Yes, I heard the identical thing, which personally to me made absolutely no sense whatsoever, why should GM have a stranglehold over what bedrock does. Bedrock very purposely marked this to be the tallest building in the city, and then very oddly cut it to be 60 feet under the RenCen in height , totally ridiculous and a major opportunity lost for bragging rights and going forward. Gilbert and Bedrock are generally way too smart to not have noticed this, something went on behind the scenes, which most will never know, it’s just so disappointing to so many people that we know here, because they were all looking forward to it being the tallest building. Now they have literally blown it, I’m sure it will be a beautiful building, but the height factor, along with their own marketing of this, and then turning around and went in the opposite direction just makes no sense to anyone. Already even on this comment section, you can see how disappointed people are in that determination, very silly decision.
@@doughboy1001 ,Unfortunately the final rendering says 685 feet, that is shorter than the RenCen . Bedrock really made a bad decision cutting it back just 60 feet or so under, makes no sense. Terrible marketing decision right off the bat, bragging rights in that it would’ve been the tallest building in Detroit, can be in enormous for attracting customers, visitors and other types of business.

Gm has nothing to do with this buildings height and theres way more to the story about removing the street cars. Its mostly a conspiracy that GM got rid of the street cars.
So much progress was made since then. The shorter building looks done from the outside.

Would have been great to see this as the new tallest in the city buy being realistic about circumstances is understandable.
Ny would have kept the building shell but built on top to keep the heritage of the site. Detroit isn't versed in this kind of construction
this is sad news!!! this is a once and a lifetime opportunity for Detroit to get a new skyscraper of this magnitude and they shrunk it? all this money for no iconic status... look at other cities. we need that new major landmark to put this city and the state of Michigan back on the map.... Largest indoor amusement park maybe? there going to have to go all out if they cant beat the ren cen by good margin on height ... Detroit deserves this so much!!! i hope things will be reconsidered in following years... still am exited to see what they will do...
Downtown Detroit is not as attractive as is Chicago or nyc and even Detroit is still a poor city compared to others so be happy that at least there is a new project downtown.
They should make it 1,000 ft tall
From an economic standpoint, still trying to figure out how this development makes any sense whatsoever. There is already a glut of both office & retail space nationwide, not to mention this situation has been particularly pronounced in Detroit for decades. This isn't the first time Detroit developers tried the "build it and they will come" approach to mixed-use urban renewal. Today the Renaissance Center stands a testament to an earlier, and eerily similar, folly. Other than the offices occupied by GM and a marginally performing hotel, the development has vast swaths of depressing, unoccupied space. Had GM not outright purchased the entire complex, from a purely commercial perspective, it would likely have degenerated into urban ruin. "The definition of insanity . . ."

I would have preferred the Monroe Block to have been built before this , That design is/was SO MUCH BETTER than this and it would have filled in that area VERY NICELY and I believe it would have been a success having being built b4 this ~ My other thought is something ( Maybe even BETTER ) would eventually be built in THIS LOCATION

Definite bait and switch Dan Gilbert said it would be an iconic structure like the CN Tower or St Louis Arch down from 900' < to 688' just blame COVID a convenient escape.
On the positive side It still will be cool to see,but iconic....not

As a Detroiter, I've notice when it comes to these projects detroit always think small, if this was New York, Chicago, LA, Atlanta etc. It would be tall, they make it happen but Detroit always settling, playing it safe being mediocre...we never shot for the stars, this building will do nothing for our wimpy sky line.
Nobody cares about building the tallest building. The city doesn’t need to build any eye sore skyscrapers, there needs to be Detroit culture and soul in our architecture and that doesn’t call for some garbage uninspiring sky scraper.
@@Jonathan-cz4ky , I have to disagree with you totally on that one, as a downtown resident and knowing hundreds of people who live here, everyone of us were extremely disappointed he didn’t go the extra 50 to 60 feet and make it the tallest, after all of the bragging rights and symbolism that that small difference in height would’ve made. Never make sense to any of us, we most definitely want to see it to be the tallest building. It’s like running a 26 mile marathon and stopping at mile 25.

@@Jonathan-cz4ky , hey Jonathan, I think you’re very correct in saying it’s the mentality of people, and most admittedly myself also, and just about everyone I know, but a large iconic building with bragging rights, tends to be a symbol of success for a city and attraction. It’s a visual thing, also, in this particular case, it was marketed as such in a major fashion to the public. They were major announcements, consistent publicity releases, and of course Dan Gilbert and his respected supervisors themselves, constantly telling Detroit this is what they were going to do, and it was going to be a major symbol for the city of Detroit moving forward this century, which, I think, was a major mistake in the first place, hindsight is 2020, but they would’ve been wise to present this beautiful project in a different manner. People in Detroit want to see the city move forward, and an iconic symbol, particularly one that sticks out more than anything else , tends to provide that. I know it may sound irrational to some, and to each their own, It’s kind of funny, I was walking down Woodward the other day, and two people who I did not know were in front of me, we were across the street from it , in front of the Nike store, and sure enough, one said to the other one, “looks like it’s going to be nice but it’s not going to be the tallest building anymore” , and the other replied “that’s too bad.”. It’s a psychological thing, now take the same situation, and the one person would have said that” this is going to be the tallest building in Detroit, and I guarantee you the other person would have said “that’s great can’t wait” . It’s just the way many human minds perceive things I guess. I’m sure either way it’s going to be a beautiful building, and we just need to be happy about that. Mr. Gilbert at a symposium late last year, and I believe it’s on TH-cam here, was being interviewed about the building project, and oddly enough said it was going to be the tallest building in Detroit and 70 or 80 stories, which had more than a few people scratching their heads again, seeing as they announced the reduced height easily six months earlier. Maybe he just forgot. Either way he and his company need to be congratulated for all of their very hard work with Detroit, without them, we would be in big trouble.

New skyscrapers won't bring back Detroit when that money could have been best spent on tearing down the many abandoned houses and businesses, bought vacant land and built new low income housing, improved the mass transit system, built neighborhood grocery and drug stores. Seems to me the money would have been better spent that way than building an expensive skyscraper that will be one-third filled when finished.

If the people of this state remained focused on lifting up its most populous city instead of fleeing for the suburbs to escape from the fear of living near BLACK People taking business/JOBS wealth/tax base and political power with them and more recently most of any attractions that brought people here ( examples ) state fair , home and garden show , Circus b4 it’s complete demise and now with this other auto show out in Oakland county the last couple years while this one was put on ice until this year ( I’m assuming that will affect the flow of people coming to Detroits ) with the help of the State and Federal Government building express ways and sewerage systems leading out of this place making the exodus easier while tearing up and disrupting what had been successful Black areas of the city and now TROLLS want to come on these sites making racist statements and pretend there kind had nothing to do with why this city has come to the state it’s in today
