I would have guessed that as many trans and t cases you have pulled you would have a adapter for the jack besides the 8x8 lol
I was thinking the exact same thing.
well, with his luck, he might as well go ahaed and make one! lol,,,,
Bummer dude
If you install the stainless flex tube's,between the header and the exhaust you save on header failure and gasket failure. This really works great.
In your retrospect video, you use wood block and the all slippy. If you drill a couple 3/16 holes in thr trans jack plate, you can use a couple wood screws to secure the wood block. Would be less stuff you have to fight.
It was good to see Grandpa Dar again. It's sad that you can't get a quality rebuilt trans.
I chuckle and the friendly "banter" between Paul and Hunter.... Everyone knows they have the utmost respect for each other.... It makes for a fun time watching these video's.... Im sorry for your misfortune with transmissions.... In the olden days I had done some work on transmissions but now.... I wont get hear them....
Good job guys. Thank you 😊
Keep doing great things Paul!
Maybe you should look into Gearstar Transmissions with Paul's current "luck" it sure as heck can't hurt. They are well known in the hot rod world for custom builds of high horsepower dragsters. If they're trans hold up to that abuse maybe just maybe they hold up to Pauls lead foot and sticky tires over rocks.
Nice to see Pappa Dar! Miss his naps in the chair
gawd, I felt that in the pit of my stomach and I'm just an observer! It seems to me that transmission building is a lost art. I'm an old guy and a couple of times in my life I've paid good money for a transmission "job" only to be disappointed. The only job that got done was emptying my wallet. I love your channel and look forward to seeing you bounce back and overcome this with your normal good humor. Kudos to you for keeping it together.
Glad you could keep a smile on your face with it all going wrong. No doubt you're upset about it, but still have the class to keep it nice!
Your transmission curse is relentless!! Is there any videos of you on the 24H to hell and back? I can’t find you on any of there videos!
I saw how the rear drive shaft was reinstalled i would check it its backwards.
Get that dude who helped Matt with his gearbox.
Hey man What happened with showing us grandma lollie’s finished driveway? I’m gonna be looking for it in the next video!
So you guys watch Murphys diesel, that's where that music comes from
Sounds like the clutch seals are getting hard
I feel your pain!
8:15 that wasnt on hunter Paul dont blame him you knew he was hands on and was loosening it so you should hv been ready thats on you lol
Well i wish I knew autos besides 727s and 904s. Ive done a couple of th350 and 400 s but they are easy
Man it must be the year of the transmission I’ve smoked three in three different trucks
Randy’s transmissions is what you need to go to
You are using the same music as Murphy's Diesel,I'm getting confused (doesn't take much )
The transmission is being built with all available updates?
Let's hope it's sorted and gives you reliable.
Did i miss the new shop tour? I watch every vid tho? Lol i mean it looks done?maybe they just haven't did one yet🤷♂️🤷♂️😁
That is so dang frustrating!!!
I am feeling your pain! Moments like that really stink, days waisted and costly. I think that is why Whisky was invented!
Another repair thanks to Paul's right foot.
Just daily driving......lol
Damn transmissions! I think they are just cursed!
Wow that was a lot of work! I can see your anger after that disappointment.
Vacuum line?
Paul, don't loud pipes save lives....?
I payed for a rebuilt trans. Wasn’t sent shop closed took me 6 months to save to get and I was screwed
Bummer...
It’s just the way she goes boys some days you win👏some days you lose🤫 but every day above ground and vertical is a win
9:15 It's a good thing you build em to work on, cause they don't build transmissions to work with the power of your right foot 😉
They need to step up the quality of their product 😂💯
Well, on the bright side, all the bolts are freshly cleaned and the exhaust is fixed!
Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦
Every time I start thinking about swapping my sm465 and doubler out for a 4L80 and Atlas I see one of these videos and I rethink my decision. The ole manual never fails or gets hot , doesn’t require a fan/cooler but does require you to drive and not sit see while out wheeling! Paul , I hope the next trans you get in there works awesome so I can go back to dreaming of a auto..lol.
I hate automatic transmissions, but now, being paralyzed, I appreciate them.
4L80s are tough. But it needs to be rebuilt correctly. You can't take shortcuts on the seals, or valve body.
I had better luck with my 4l60 than I ever did with my 4l80 transmission’s unfortunately, I ultimately went to the nv4500 and haven’t looked back
@@maciasrick454 I've gotten 450,000 plus miles out of 3 different 4l80e. When I worked for EMS we had several Chevy ambulances with 4l80e behind a diesel and not a single one failed for 300,000 plus miles. It's absolutely the best transmission I've ever seen.
The reason I bought my TJ Unlimited with a 6 speed. I had smoked 2 automatic transmissions, few torque converters and then got another with b ad front seal that wouldn't stop leaking after replacing the seal 3 times.
Not a wasted day. A day of education. You learned where not to go for transmission repair. 😁✌️
That's an expensive lesson.
Remember he had alot of problems on the last trans he had built by that guy, the one in the derby car a yr or so ago he didn't learn his lesson then as we can tell 😂😂😂😂😂 come on Paul u can do everything else I'm betting you that u can do better than the guy you got hell teach one of your boys how to rebuild them cause that's a dang good career if you are great at it lol
@@thomaspike1475 I wonder how much TH-cam paid him to film that expensive lesson. 🤔😁✌️
@georgehampton7579 enough to pay for a transmission I bet.
@@paulrivers7248 I wonder if he had both those transmissions built by that guy at around the same time, like he said this one has been sitting for a while and he didn't put it in to find out it was faulty until now.
I live east of the Mississippi and I can tell you that it’s absolutely almost impossible to find a good transmission man, and to find a great one is like finding gold! They are so busy, you would think young people would want to learn the art of doing it! It’s going the wrong way of a lot of things
I too feel your pain. Better to get one from a junkyard than to try and find a reliable rebuild.
I feel you, i have the same issue in east Pennsylvania. I’m on my 3rd transmission and looks like i might need an 4 soon.
My brother lives south of St Louis, and runs a transmission repair business. He says GM has kept him busy for 20+ years, with their crappy trannys.
"Disposable Culture". People find it easier and cheaper to just swap a whole new-in-box unit out rather than actually take the time and effort to repair the things. Which is fine as long as you're servicing a vehicle made within the last five years or so, but useless if you're looking at a 1968 Jeep or something like that...
I'm a tech - not a transmission tech, I specialize in driveability diagnostics - but I decided to rebuild my 4L60E after the last reman unit made it 40k of normal driving (original unit made it 200k).
I spent hundreds and hundreds of hours going through it, reading LS1TECH, Cliff McCormick, ATRA, contacting Sonnax and asking questions, building a vacuum tester...
because I wanted to UNDERSTAND what I was doing, what parts to use, and how to set up a unit that's a bit better and faster and stronger than stock.
It's doing good now, and it was a blast although very difficult to learn on my own.
That said, even with the ridiculous time I have invested on the research, rebuild, and write up....
I can't believe how hard it is to buy the most basic "remanufactured" unit that just works mostly as well as stock.
It's downright terrifying.
It really shouldn't be even 10 hours to set up a good unit for a shop with all the specs, procedures, parts, and a SKILLED and KNOWLEDGEABLE experienced technician overseeing everything. It shouldn't be that bad, and it shouldn't be a bad gig.
BUT, you start considering the price that people are willing to pay, the lack of motivation or even simple curiosity in so many younger technicians, and the fact that the old timers that know the art are not growing in number - it starts to make sense. Between this and the throwaway culture that's being pushed and mostly accepted, I really am scared about the future.
And that's why I do my best to share my excitement and knowledge about all this sort of thing with everyone I can - especially younger folk.
Learning this stuff and figuring it out for yourself and getting good at it and repairing or making something that works is very gratifying if the effort gets put in!
What a bummer; so frustrating! Gotta walk away and regroup. There has to be somebody out there in transmission land that can help you!
That was the biggest issue when I had a garage. Not only rebuilt parts. But brandy new parts are junk right out of the box. We ran into a couple of soft camshafts on the same motor. We thought it must have been something we were doing. The parts house basically said, Sucks To Be You. Makes you want to take the top off a liter of liquor and not put it back on till it's gone.
Great seeing you plug good products that work well for you, even if they aren't a sponsor.
"I pay full price for these and they work great" is a much better advertisement than "these were free to me, they'll work til they don't"
"Thanks for the help, Hunter!"
Well, this kid is always hard at work! Holding the camera and getting ALL the angles is a fulltime job! 😂😁😜🤟
I don't guess you watched the video
@@calholli I've only watched this far, and think Hunter had more than enough time to jump in and grab the easy end. And Paul admonished him for it. Of course wheeling the dolly the wrong direction is all Paul.
That dodge sure is crunched up.
We definitely do love Hunter! We may give him a hard time on occasions but without him, you all wouldn’t be able to see anything we get done. All hail Hunter!
👍🏼👍🏼Hunter💥💥(What A Good Man You Are) 💥💥Hunter👍🏼👍🏼
You forgot being the designated shop scapegoat (or, in this case I guess, scape-rat). And when he's not doing any of the above, pitching in!
(By the way: ALWAYS have a designated shop scapegoat. That way when something goes wrong, you blame that person/thing, fix the problem--and they know it's not actually them. Need a quick getaway? Add "e" to the beginning, and RUN.)
Deja vu! I had a local trans shop build me a 60e for my 500hp 5.3 cateye build (first engine I ever built myself) and it lasted a whole 1k miles before the bands and planetarys exploded. Bought me a junkyard trans with 250k and rebuilt it myself with mostly eBay parts and it’s lasted almost 6 years now. If you want it done right, do it yourself! Keep your head up Paul
I've been watching you guys since the ol' taco straight axle project in the very beginning and its so awesome to see how much you have grown. Love watching the videos with my 11 year old every weekend. Watching you and your family has become a part of our family, LOL. Can't wait to see what shenanigans you guys will get into next. Stay safe and healthy!
what a great thing to bond over! me and my down syndrome brother love these vids!
Me as well . I like seeing people prosper. They have to just to remember not to let greed control themselves as they grow.
@@larryalexander4833 yes we all need to remember that...
As much stuff you build and rebuild, I think a safer jack for transmission and transfer cases should be on the list
Hey guys, I just wanted to make sure you cleaned the transmission cooler(s) and lines. Don't remember seeing weather it got done or not. 🤔Anyway, thanks for sharing! Glad you got the exhaust leak fixed!👍
Thanks for asking that as I was wondering the same thing. If I recall right, between the lines and cooler there could be a quart of glistening leftovers.
They usually do , i remember Ben spraying the can of cleaner through them on many builds.
@@warrenmichael918
Yeah I remember that too but Ben isn't there and no one mentioned it so I just have to wonder 🤔
Good to see Papa Dar! You all need to go wheeling together again.
How's Merlin at building automatic transmissions? Seems like he can build anything well...
Man, I feel for ya buddy. That sucks royally!
Paul needs to build a cradle that wraps around the transfer case, and another cradle for the transmission, for removal. Any person that owns chevys should have plenty of tools to make remove and replace much easier and safer.
I was just going to say that. With all the fabrication skills in Paul's brain and hands, he has the know-how to build a cradle, even an adjustable one to mount on the high lift tranny jack. I am surprised it hasn't been done already. With that Arc Droid being able to make precision pieces, it wouldn't take very long to assemble one.
Why doesn't anyone make a trans Jack that doesn't need a block of wood to make it reach?
I'm sure if he goes to the trouble of making the cradle he'll never need it because the transmission will never have another issue
@MrFozzie52 sounds like a great "problem" to have!!
that would be a good reason to build one, better than warranty😊
Flushing the transmission lines and cooler are very important. After changing a transmission that you have grenaded.
Very true.. But I don't' think that's the issue
During my "battle" with automatic transmissions, I went with new transmission cooler and lines even that was after doing the second one.
Especially after showing all the metal in it...
I feel for you Paul. I'm on the 3rd transmission because these (professional) transmission mechanics can't get it right. I'm keeping my fingers crossed 🤞 on this latest one. 😮
can't recall how I found this channel it is still just as awesome of a watch as it was then good job fab rats .
Paul ,I rebuilt transmissions many years ago. Every once in a while you get that one you do everything right and wouldn't work, tear it apart couldn't find anything wrong ,use all the parts in other transmissions and never have a problem . I hate transmissions😡
Paul, check the valve body for leaks or tightness, it's leaking some where & appling two bands against each other,,maybe
Had a buddy that owned a transmission shop, he said most of the time it's the valve body.
I had an Allison 1000 rebuilt. Upon removing the valve body, he found a valve seized in there so just put a new valve body in it. No extra charge, can't argue with that.
As frustrating as this was… its not all bad… you actually had many lessons in this video… as long as the viewers were paying attention. Thank you for parting your knowledge and experience on all of us.. for me, the main reason why I watch is because I try to find things I can learn from.
You have to love the reliability of those GM transmissions 😆 I’ve replaced more than I can count
I'm at 9 in just plain trucks.
Ive learned over time and lots of bad luck to just make sure you test whatever you're working on before you put everything back together. Hope you figure out what wrong with it. Keep up the grind!
It seems you have about the same luck with transmission builders as I do
Its everywhere, finding a shop that knows transmissions backwards and forwards is impossible!
They probly know how to fix em, just dont give a fu@k
The way it’s wrapping up, I’d guess it’s in your t-case like front and rear are spinning different speed. I wouldn’t guess the trans just yet
The tires/axles did seem to be binding up.
Something looked weird.
Hope you do a post mortem on that transmission to see what went wrong with the build, maybe it will help some of these shops up their game! I've got a stock 4l60 in my Tahoe that has 288k and still functions like it did when I bought it with only one complete oil change, filter and flush as the only maintenance I've done, that said it doesn't get worked quite like yours do! Love your content, always look forward to seeing what kind of fun you folks are up to!
With Hunter's back towards the camera, we didn't see him do anything wrong. Bahaha!
I’m surprised you haven’t made something that goes on the jack to get get your t cases out easier
Paul I had that EXACT issue with my TH400 RMVB in my Wagoneer. I chased my tail, rebuilt the trans twice, and several hundred dollars in fluids later…. It ended up being a bad NEW TCI valve body. I ended up ordering their billet version, threw it in and it solved all problems. Not sure what parts are in your trans but my Wagoneer did the exact same thing.
It locked into gear but then seemed like forward and reverse gears grabbed and locked everything up. I could move a few feet before pressure came up and locked it up..
Paul you’re a mechanical magician! Love the Fab Rats channel and crew 💛
Amazing how talented you folks are but perpetuate illiteracy. Vice Grip makes fun of people people who don't know the proper words for common vehicle terms. "Anti-Hill Roller-Downer pedal/lever". I guess being wrong is a 1st Amendment right.
That' s exactly why I called it car wars all my life! I feel your pain brother.
If HUNTER evèr leaves ,put all his videos together and make a FAB RAT BOOK.... QUIZ FOR HUNTER MECHANICS FOR EVERYONE ELSE
Personally i would tested the operation of the trans before i reinstalled all the skidplates.
That’s exactly what I was thinking as they were hammering and prying those skid plates back into place. Might not be the transmission that’s the problem. Did anyone check Hunters work?
Ye, thats common procedure for everything. Reassembling all the unit without testing it first, shows overconfidence, but im sure is not his fault, its Hunters fault 😁
Seems to me like Hunter can't do nothing but hold the grip on that camera. Maybe he thinks his job is only holding a camera.
Something's going to fall on you he'll just feel it well I thought you had it. What does my opinion.
Blame it on Hunter. He's a gangster.🤷🏽♂️
🤜🏽💥🤛🏽🤙🏾👍🏽😊😎🙋🏽♂️
You get my highest respect, Paul, and best wishes for you and all of your builds.
AWESOME CONTENT // Next Plan-demic Targeting Children with Pneumonia ??? //
Glad to see Shaun he's a very valuable player on the team
The only thing better when Hunter surprised you with the transfer case would have been if he was also shining the drop light in your eyes.
For exhaust leaks you should use remflex exhaust gaskets. There all i use anymore and are great.
The ONLY gaskets that work! I have used every kind of exhaust gasket possible and remflex has never ever let me down. By far the best gasket ever. They are also manufactured in the good old US of A :)
Did Hunter get a raise ?? He's actually working a wrench and helping !!!😂😂
It was Hunter's fault the that the trans dont work, he touch it...
Did you flush the lines for the cooler?
Did you ever post the video from Hell and back? Did I miss it?
That comes out December 5
Paul maybe build a motor/transmission tester rig stand for before you install them in any of your vehicals❓❓🧐🧐🤔🤔😉😉Probably that time aren't getting any younger doing things twice anymore.
I recommend about 20 minutes on the seat of the CR 500 you’ll feel a lot better
Or 40 mins bouncing on the bed
Looks like you didn't tamp the substrate base course under the new slab... 🤷♂️🤷♂️
Love the honesty!
Enjoy all the work and fun you all have seem to have in the videos.
I think you found the weak link.front end upgraded, transfer case changed, motor highly modified.poor tyranny just is not designed for the abuse it takes.
You were supposed to show us Grandma's finished drainage solution and of course the smiles! Can't wait to watch another episode of Mission Transmission!
You might be on to something Paul! Instead of fixing stuff for an episode you just smash things! Change the name to “Rage Rats” and everyone smashes things of no use anymore 😁😁😁
Thank you for not saying bad words. Seriously… it’s a big part of what attracts me to your channel. Positive attitude even when you want to paint the walls blue with curses.
Good morning to all Paul if you want something done right sometimes you have to do it yourself even though hunters learning how you put things together lol now you can put the jeep in the shop lol love your videos
On the bright side you didnt swap that "good" transmission in before hell and back.
Maybe its time to buy a new new crate transmission this is what #4 ir 5 transmission swaps in the fj
It's good to see that Hunter is doing more and more of the mech stuff. You can never know to much about that stuff. I'm 75 and wish I knew as much as my grandsons know about cars and trucks.
Bring your transmission to Randy’s Transmissions. They were on the Diesel Brothers TV Show.
Well Paul I'm wondering if you might be better off making a Cradle one for transfer case one for automatic transmission and one for standard transmission and make fit on that stand you use . Yes it will take a little time but once you make them you'll wonder how did with out them. Anyway thanks for listening.
I have not seen any videos of 24 hours of hell & back yet Paul........
Throughout this entire video, I kept telling Paul, “There’s no reverse. There’s no reverse.“ apparently, Paul forgot what happened the first time he and Ben installed this transmission, and the whole reason they had to swap it out for the green one.
Have you looked closer at the transfer case and rear dif? They might be worth looking at?
Yesterday’s flashlight holder is today’s camera person.
Auto transmissions have been the weak link in almost every vehicle ive owned.
I cannot believe that every transmission you have had rebuilt will not work. The only shop I know of that is really good is way out in Ohio. Vickers battle ax transmissions. He builds some amazing units that last.
Probably lucky the camera was rolling 😉 I feel your pain Paul (way too often these days!!) I don't know what it is, but I find I have to do because you can't trust anyone else to do the job 🙄The trouble is, the older I get, the harder it is & seems to take way too much time to get stuff done (which is why I "need" to have some help) but alas, I've just gotta go it alone & get done what I can! but that also means stuff like driveline that I've never done before, I've had to teach myself how & buy the tools I need. It's so very frustrating, it's not even funny anymore! Good luck!!
I'm not sure what you use to flush your transmission lines & cooler with, but if you don't flush them with a good cleaning solvent both directions for at least 15 or 20 minutes whatever debris was in them will get pump into your new transmission as soon as you start the engine. I worked for a transmission shop for 10 years and the only way we would sell a transmission to someone who installed it themselves is if they had a way to flush them properly & that's not just spraying brake cleaner & air through the lines to clean them. The shop I worked at has been in business for over 70 years in Tyler, Tx. & is named Dunn Transmissions. If you are interested in talking to them let me know. The guy that's part owner & runs it is my ex-brother-in-law & he has worked there for over 40 yrs. I hope you get the problem fixed. I've never seen TH-400 have as many problems as you've had before. They are usually pretty bullet proof transmissions. It may be time to buy a transmission from a shop that specializes in building transmissions specifically for rockcrawling. I know they're expensive, but there's a good chance you wouldn't have to keep swapping transmissions out every few months. That's got to be worth the extra money!!😊😊
DITTO WHAT HE SAID.
I had a bad day, too. My life coach called..... told me I didn't make the team...
