FoodSaver Has Low Suction

  • The pumps in food savers sometimes get clogged with food particles or the gasket dries out and leaks air. This unit is a V2830 but various other units have similar style pumps. My camera shifted the video upside down and sideways several times without my realizing it so I was disappointed in the quality after rotating those shots but it still turned out OK.

    Man, I wish you did instructional videos on everything in life. This is probably the most thorough instructional video I’ve ever watched on anything. If I could offer any advice at all, I would say, go ahead and invest in a stand or something for your phone where you don’t have to hold it and you can use both your hands at the same time.but I gave it a light before I even got halfway through it so I didn’t forget. Thanks man.

    Hey Kelly! Thanks a lot for the video. I was going to toss my old FoodSaver in the landfill (my most used kitchen appliance). I did a check on YT and ran into your video. I followed your instructions and it fixed my eight year old FoodSave. It now works like new. Again, thanks for taking the time to share your experience. Very much appreciated. You are the Man! Big thumbs up 4U.

    Just a thought, the vinyl tubing will harden with age and sometimes start leaking at the fittings if disturbed. If you have to take the tubing off of a fitting, you can heat it with a hot air gun to soften the tubing making it easier to remove. Most good hardware or home improvement stores carry replacement vinyl tubing. The short piece of tubing to the pump should have been removed, it would have made it much easier to work on the pump and also remove and reinstall the motor hold down. My Foodsaver needs this maintenance, that's why I watched this video instead of going out to buy a new one.

    Thank you very much Kelly! I was looking for a replacement for my V2240 when I came across your video. My trusty 15 year old vacuum sealer had given up the ghost; no sign of power, no LEDs on; nothing. Once I saw in your video that two screws were hidden under the rubber feet of my unit it came apart easily. I checked the fuse, wiggled the power connectors, used a toothpick to test the door lock micro-switch and looked everything over for liquids and/or food. All looked good so I assumed an electronic component had failed and buttoned the unit back up to dispose of it. Plugged it in to the AC one final time and "Voila"! Everything powered up and it again vacuums and seals just like it did when I first bought it.
    I must have had a poor contact somewhere that is now corrected, for the time being at least. Thank you for taking the time to post this video!

    Thanks for the help. Cleaned mine out but realized a spring that controls the suction was to spread not letting a flap to seal and create the tight vacuum and seal. Shorts the gap by shortening the spring.

    • @kellykimble4047
      @kellykimble4047  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice solution. I did the same thing with the heater element. The spring started to corrode from the heat and was losing contact. I chopped a piece out and that worked for a while until it started failing again. I did a better job of fixing it the second time. Been going for a few years like that now.

    This was absolutely super! I've become braver lately about repairing household goods and have been helped along superbly by TH-cam videos. I love this one, as I love my FoodSaver and from the beginning, I think it could have more suction. So I might open it up and look around, given my new found confidence. Took mine apart last night to see if there was anything in the inside vacuum lines. Never thought to dismantle the pump. Have ordered new seals. If it doesn't work better when they arrive, will tackle the pump! Great video, although for an old codger like me, the twist-transition between scenes was sometimes a little jarring. :)

    Good job. I have one dead and one dying that this fix will likely take care of, and nice to know what I'm getting into first.
    All these vacuum sealer manufactures are intelligent enough to know if they don't put changeable filters on their product, it's inevitable they will become unusable. Intelligent enough to know it and slimy enough to not add the filter. And no, there is no excuse for this but greed...none.
    I would suggest anyone making this repair, and while you are uinto the machine already...go to ebay or their auto parts and order/buy a cylindrical type, $4, glass gas filter. They can be taken apart easily and a simple piece of cotton will replace the filter. Looks like there is plenty of room for the filter unit inside the VS the author here is using. If not, drill a hole, run a piece of aquarium tubing out and back in, hook it in place of the old tubing and there you have it.
    Can't say for sure but this may even allow us to pack the occasional powdered foods, you know the things that make it "our fault" our vacuum sealer went bad. :)
    Think I'll put my money where my mouth is and order/install the filter and see how it works out...I'll be back. :)

    I did the same to 2 of my older units. One had a problem with the lid latch interlock switch not engaging to enable the vac/seal function. While i was in there, i took apart the pump and also used fda food grade silicone on the gasket and piston seal. The other foodsaver had nothing wrong with it but i was curious to see it was similar inside. It was nearly identical. Anyways, the first unit now vacuums harder than it ever did. the other one works the same which is good since nothing was wrong with it when it came apart.

    The newer ones use weird half pan head screws, to remove them grind a small screwdriver in the middle of the blade to make the tool. Replace with similar size Phillips screws to make future service easier. You can add a medical filter in line to protect the pump.and sensor.

    I'm taking my Food Saver apart tomorrow & checking all the guts to see if mine is having the same problem. It worked properly for about a year & then crapped out. It just won't vacuum properly no matter what I try.

    Thanks very much for the detailed video.

    • @kellykimble4047
      @kellykimble4047  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure. For example I have used Vaseline as well. My only caution would be that it might be possible that traces of it could be pulled forward through the tube and into the air chamber and contaminate the food so I wouldn't use something poisonous.

  • @dougc3086
    @dougc3086 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Wonderful; if this doesn't work; wet the foam seals with soapy water, as they get porous when they get old, if the soapy water makes the seals work, then you found another issue and you can order new seals for around 6 dollars. Or you can just wet them with soapy water every time.

    • @kellykimble4047

    • @kellykimble4047
      @kellykimble4047  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do I understand correctly that it does suck the air out but it will not seal the bag afterwards? If so, that is fairly common and requires the heat strip to be fixed or replaced. Let me know if that is the problem and I will get something posted.

    • @vasanders102
      @vasanders102 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, at this point it does every thing, but I have to turn the seal or wet it to get a good seal and I know this means a foam seal replacement is in my future. Foodsaver no longer makes this seal and I have been trying to figure out how I can make it myself. I know I need closed cell foam but other than that I am at a lost.

    • @kellykimble4047
      @kellykimble4047  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ok. Here are a couple ideas. 1.) If it is just a problem with the seal getting too dry from age or from soaps, you can try adding a thin layer of silicone sealant around the tops of the seals. That will give a good seal without sticking. Wait till it completely dries! A less permanent solution would be to use some Vaseline on the seals. Just rub it around the top and bottom seals, it should last a good while (reapply more when it stops working). Also, in case you have not tried it, the seals are reversible. flip them over and see if that helps.
      2.) If your seal has shortened/collapsed so it does not reach high enough any more, the solution above may not help. You could put a layer of silicone in the track where the seal goes so it is not quite as deep. That will add a little height and bring the seals together more. Keep it smooth and even though.
      Another way if your seals are destroyed: The seals are only a couple dollars for other models. Get the closest one that is not smaller if possible and reshape it.

    Hi Kelly - awesome video and channel. I have a V835 and a family member inadvertently used the food saver container filled with OatFlour to seal it without using the coffee filter. Now my food saver won’t seal. Do you think my food saver is clogged with flour? What do you suggest I do? @kellykimble4047  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you. It definitely could use a cleaning. Flour, I imagine, could clog a lot of areas. Clear the outer seals (you probably already did that) and all the inner lines if you can. Once you open it up, you'll probably see where the flour got to if the lines are see through. Depending on the actual symptoms, you might find the other video more useful: th-cam.com/video/jguFiF0Rouw/w-d-xo.html

      Actually this video is spot on. And sorry I’m not using the right terminology but not mechanically inclined. Just learning from your videos. But just figured out it’s probably the equivalent of the piston ring that broke apart - the plastic thing … the connecting rod + piston + piston ring is a one piece molded plastic part. I think over time it’s just become brittle and deteriorated and when I took it off to clean it the “rings” have broken apart. Do you know where I can buy just the “piston”. I saw an entire used non working unit on eBay for $4 bucks but $20 for shipping! Hate to junk summin away for a 0.25 cent piece especially now that you’ve taught me how to put Humpty Dumpty together again! Cheers from Texas! 🤠
