All qbs in this league have their flaws. Utilizing the middle of the field has never been russ’s main game. This shouldn’t be conflated with the idea that he is incapable of doing so but that’s not where he’s at his best. However, he is great outside the numbers, an efficient passer, a beast in the 4th quarter, and a STELLAR all time deep ball passer. This makes it so that he succeeds in a play action offense where he can take shots and get rolling throws to the sidelines. Where my confusion comes in is why people believe that there is only ONE way to win in this league. Russ has already proven that he can win using his style of play. And for those who are going to point to the LOB news flash you NEED a good defense to win a championship (95% of the time). Tom Brady beat the Rams in the 2019 Super bowl scoring 13 points because his defense held them to a field goal. Von Miller and crew propped up the remains of Peyton Manning all season to win in 2016. Yet, we only criticize Russell because everyone was indoctrinated to believe that a qb should only play a particular way. He’s a trailblazer, the first true modern day dual threat qb to win the super bowl, second black qb to win, and he’s 5’11. So criticize all you want, he’s a made man and a proven commodity in this league.

It's not "He'S tOo ShOrT, hE cAn'T SEE tHe MiDdLe". Drew Brees is barely any taller and he worked the middle like a wizard, which would imply he could SEE over the line just fine. It's that Russ is generally cautious and INT averse. He's an anti-gunslinger. He doesn't look to throw over the middle because he prefers the generally safer throws closer to the sidelines. "Seeing" has little to do with it.
Drew Brees was also an anomaly for a short guy who was barely seeing past his O-line man on his tippy toes and he was known as a middle field pass merchant most of his career. Throwing to the sideline for Russ is more a comfortable play style than a choice. Its just that Tomlin is willing to live with it given he has the receivers to make it work in a jump ball winner with Pickens. Along with the sacks Russ likes to eat up as a trade off for being INT averse.
@@t4d0W damn, this is the perfect explanation. but at some point artur smith gotta dial something up for the redzone. theyre moving the ball and gettin yards, but need to put up 7 in the playoff
Wilson's production in college was much better than Brees was and Wilson in the NFL was better with protecting the ball Nobody ever criticized Brees for all the poor INTs he threw, like the one that sent the Rams to the SB a few years ago.
These facts will show you how stupid this article is. Russell Wilson has thrown 341 career TD passes, 1 short of 12th all time and just 108 INTs, the 2nd best TD-INT ratio in NFL history. So every TD must have been a MOON BALL huh? Russell Wilson has a career 100 passing rating, 3rd best all time So every pass must have avoided the middle of the field I guess? Russell Wilson has a 64 percent completions for his career, Top 15 all time. I guess he only throws deep or to the sidelines? Russell Wilson has thrown a TD pass in 23 of the last 24 games, the best among all current starters, so every pass must have avoided the middle of the field? I guess the TD pass to Austin wasn't the middle of the field? The nitpicking about this guy is too hilarious.
Most doubters and haters are irrational or they’re immature and lack critical thinking skills. Some are just jealous or insecure and feel they need to minimize or undermine others. Haters are failures. Russell Wilson is the real deal and has already proven his worth.
And then you bring in Fields at the end of a game and he fails. Ive never believed in situational Qbs. You need to throw and that guy isn't in rythem. IE last TNF
Feels like you were holding on to this one until he lost lol. He’s been doing much better than in Denver. And much much better than Steelers QB last year. He’s been able to drive the ball downfield, it’s been their performance in red zone that’s been awful. I’m a Steelers fan and I’m thrilled with the improved roster and scheming compared to last year. A reasonable goal for this team is to win a playoff game. There’s no guarantee they’ll do it. But I think they’ve definitely shown enough improvement to prove that they’re capable of it.
He’s playing the same way he was in Denver, while Sean Payton didn’t give him the flexibility that Arthur did, it’s for the same reason that you cannot go far into the season playing “Russ ball” it’s not sustainable.
He wasn't holding onto this one, Steelers fans are holding onto the uninformed notion that Russ was ever a good option. Fields was your best bet. Guys like Alex are making the videos now that the cracks are more visible to those willing to look. Of course he's gonna put out the video after 5 games and then a loss. That means there's enough film to review, and the video would be far more poorly received if he put it out after a win.
@@DontTakeThisSeriously616 This Russell Wilson hate is delusional. Justin Fields is a horrible QB. There is not one defensive coordinator that respects his passing ability. I'm a broncos fan and have no ill will towards Russ, I thought he was always clowned on more than deserved (sure some, just not to the extent he got). I know its easy to talk ISH after losing to the Browns... But i said before even the Browns game that the Steelers offense is not Sustainable. Throwing 50/50 balls to George Pickens all day is not a sustainable offense. The top offenses dont even do that. Eventually Teams will just double Pickens or start playing more "Zone and replace" concepts to stop those crossing routes like Miami defense does. So once again I see the Steelers doing the same thing they always do. Make the first round of playoffs exit ... Repeat
If Wilson were that easy to stop, he'd have been out of the league a decade ago. He's a physically flawed player who's declined with age, so there will always be a ceiling to his performance, but he's still more effective than many QBs despite that. I can picture a world where the Steelers figure out the PA shot reads and call fewer concepts he can't see (or make adjustments like borderline cut blocking which lets him see, staying within the rules). I don't think he will ever return to "top 5 QB" conversation, but with the Steelers defense, he does not need to manage that. I think they're good enough to take games off of playoff teams this year, though it's hard to picture them getting past the Chiefs at arrowhead or the Bills. It also wouldn't surprise me if they lost in divisional round. Either way, I don't think they're way better or worse than the top of AFC South or good wildcard teams, and at least right now they're the best team in their own division.
@@TheMelnTeamFirst sentence is not necessarily true. It's easy to throw out blanket statements like that, but it's a copout. The reason he's still in the league is due to the circumstances. He and Pete Carroll had a parental type of relationship, so Pete obviously wanted to make him work and keep him around long after the Super Bowl success stopped. It's only after Russ' ego convinced him to try and get Pete Carroll fired that he was thrown out into the rest of the league where he'd no longer be protected the same way. Since fending for himself, he's had his stint at the Broncos for 2 awful years, where the only reason he was even kept at the team was because of the contract situation. And now his first year in Pittsburgh (who only took him because of that same contract situation, where he was available at the cheapest salary possible) where he didn't even play for half the season, and has had an obviously good start bc hes gone against almost all awful defenses. The thing keeping him in the league is not, and never has been, skill. It's pure circumstance and money. He was extremely lucky to have Pete Carroll and the Legion of Boom. We've seen how good he's been without both of them lol. EDIT: The Steelers fans coping in my replies will see. EDIT 2: told y'all.
They’re 8th in the NFL in rushing. To suggest the ONLY thing they have is a deep ball is completely disingenuous, and it’s not accurate. You wanted him to lose so you could be “right,” but you’re not.
What is going on with the bengals defense? Does the scheme not work anymore? Is it due to the injuries? Seems like the safety play is very bad. But they have been able to adjust before and especially to Russ or qbs that cant wont throw over middle.
Drew Brees used to take a 9 step drop back to see over the line. It's not an impossible headwind to overcome. I'm not sure why more NFL OCs don't try that with short kings.

In every college and NFL game Russell Wilson has played in his career (regular season and playoffs), he has thrown 476 TD passes to just 150 INTs, a better than 3-1 ratio over those 16.5 seasons. In the that span he is just 1 of 4 QBs all time to have led the NCAA in passing efficiency and the NFL in passing rating. Yet, all we hear is things he does wrong that you never hear about other star QBs He is supposedly the only QB who takes sacks for holding the ball too long, the only one who can't see the field, doesn't throw to the middle of the field, the only one that doesn't throw to the tight end and the only one that can't throw from the pocket. So how in the hell did he throw 476 TD passes with a 3-1 TD-INT ratio? I mean, for all the things he supposedly does bad, why has he outperformed 95 percent of the QBs that ever played the game?
Russell Wilson is the ONLY QB in NFL history that was a starter his first 12 years in the league and NEVER threw more than 13 INTs in any season . He is also just 1 of 2 QBs in the same span to throw 20 or more TDs in 11 of those seasons and never below 16. CONSISTENCY!!!!

If I was a betting man I'd be so excited to bet against the Steelers when they make it to the playoffs. This offense just isn't sustainable against the best teams in the NFL that have time to prepare for it.
I remember in 2019 "Let Russ cook" Defenses quickly figured out the simple offence that the Seahawks were stuck with and Russ was starting to lose his mobility. The second half of the season was not good. As a hawks fan we liked Wilson until his hubris got in his way and he thought the Hawks were limiting his success instead instead of working with what he had. So we enjoyed watching him crash in Denver. I would be happy to see him do well with the Steelers.
Russ didn't "cook" due to simple and conservative playcalling. No QB (except maybe Russ like we saw for a while) wouild thrive when the coach goes "ok, just drop back and throw it deep" without actually scheming for it. The reason they had one of the most predictable playcalling in the NFL was not because of Russ - it was because of the coach and culture. Russ had to bail them out so many damn times I lost count. Always behind late, never adjusting, keep running into wall..... and then "oh shit we're in trouble - Russ go do your thing" And when it didn' work Russ got all the blame. He was always held back in that offense. I used to be a Seattle fan, but watching the fanbase treat Russ like that was disgusting. You deserve to lose. You no longer have Russ magic to pull rabbits out of the hat late 4th quarter. Have fun being average, forgotten and irrelevant again.
@@hansbystrom9983 Maybe so, but he went to Denver and tried to play a more schemed up offense and could never throw on time, nor see open targets. I was with you until I saw how poorly he played in a different offense. The Steelers are scheming for Russ's strengths. just like the Hawks did.
Seattle fans used to day he doesn't throw to tight ends. He threw 292 TDs for Seattle, 72 whick went to tight ends. That's 25 percent of his Seattle TD passes. Experts used to say he can't throw from the pocket Go watch his career highlights and see how foolish that statement is. They said he was too small to see down field. 341 career TDs, 1 from moving into 12th place dispels that stupidity.
The goalposts are always moving with him. It's all LoB and running game.... until they're dead last in rushing and Russ leads the league in TD passes behind atrocious line. Or until they have subpar defense. The haters will just move the goalpost and find something else to criticize. When really desperate they jsut go back to his height. Most experts said he wouldn't get drafted and/or get play time, and they just never recovered from bring wrong, so they keep doubling down on the hate and they keep being wrong. Circus, really.
great video and totally fair take. I'm looking at it as: we're 8-3 while still leaving a lot of easy-to-get $$$ on the table. But I have no clue how Russ doesn't see Muth open at 4:26 when his helmet is pointed right at him and he has a corridor with nothing but air and daylight between them. That one hurts to watch. If I was an OC and the QB missed that I might just say f*** it and quit. It's funny that when Kenny Pickett was ruining a season for us, the same FV chart at 1:28 was used as evidence that Matt Canada never CALLED anything over the middle.
Y-leak is best run with a presnap motion to get linebackers first step going opposite of the side the tight end leaks to. Shanahan and Lafleur almost always run that play with presnap motion.
When he’s running quick game, he can hit over the middle. Its just his inability to do it while sitting back in the pocket having to go through multiple reads

The steelers kind of remind me of the 49ers. Cant run in the redzone, bad drop-back pass game. Also Brock modeled some of his game off of Russell Wilson(Drew Brees was another). And the first 3rd of the season Brock was throwing deep an awful lot. Maybe not as often as Russ but damned close. Brock is only 3"(?) taller than Russ, and I think D line know they can wreck a play by clogging the passing lanes even if the O-line is technically winning their one on ones. I see Niner fans complain he bails out too early, but I think he's partly trying to avoid tipped passes.
It's been hilarious watching Steelers fans try to rationalize the decision to start Russ over Fields after he got them 4-2. I heard "Russ makes us ACTUAL Super Bowl contenders" lmfao.
Steelers have had good bounces for this this season to get where they are. Easier schedule, good variance in division rivals games and a top 5 defense letting Tomlin play his kind of mucky football. Reminds me of the Browns last season with the top 5 defense and an offense that is just trying to work. With a higher seeding though Steelers could catch some good match ups in January to push for the divisional round.

Russ needs pieces around him to succeed. Brady and Mahomes are worth it because they can/could make other players better. They tailor the play to others. Russ needs the offense tailored to him. That’s the difference this year. Pit has a good run game and great defense to cover him. He could absolutely play for years like this. But if he gets greedy and wants another top 5 payday, he’ll end up the same way he did in denver. Russ is A piece. Not THE piece.

No one criticizes Aaron Rodgers for not throwing to the middle but it’s the same thing

Nobody ever criticized Brees for all the poor INTs he threw, like the one that sent the Rams to the SB a few years ago.
These facts will show you how stupid this article is.
Russell Wilson has thrown 341 career TD passes, 1 short of 12th all time and just 108 INTs, the 2nd best TD-INT ratio in NFL history.
So every TD must have been a MOON BALL huh?
Russell Wilson has a career 100 passing rating, 3rd best all time
So every pass must have avoided the middle of the field I guess?
Russell Wilson has a 64 percent completions for his career, Top 15 all time.
I guess he only throws deep or to the sidelines?
Russell Wilson has thrown a TD pass in 23 of the last 24 games, the best among all current starters, so every pass must have avoided the middle of the field?
I guess the TD pass to Austin wasn't the middle of the field?
The nitpicking about this guy is too hilarious.

Is he doing better than his last year in Denver? Seems like he's the same guy, with better weapons and defense.

In the that span he is just 1 of 4 QBs all time to have led the NCAA in passing efficiency and the NFL in passing rating.
Yet, all we hear is things he does wrong that you never hear about other star QBs

So how in the hell did he throw 476 TD passes with a 3-1 TD-INT ratio?
I mean, for all the things he supposedly does bad, why has he outperformed 95 percent of the QBs that ever played the game?
Good god that first clip in the intro. I noticed his tight end immediately running across the field without anyone within 20 yards of him.

Russ needs pieces around him to succeed. Brady and Mahomes are worth it because they can/could make other players better. They tailor the play to others. Russ needs the offense tailored to him.
