Thank you Mick and Dan for such a fun afternoon ☺️ Meeting you two was such a highlight, a memorable day 🎸 Thank you to everyone for all the wonderful comments on this video, too! 💜 A few comments have asked what pick I’m using - I forgot to go down my pick rabbit hole!. This is a 1mm Dunlop Primetone.
Thank you Jocelyn! We’ll echo everyone’s comments here and say that it was a truly enlightening day for us. See you next time - the TPS door is always open! X
Wow. Jocelyn. I am blown away and will now seek to listen whenever I can. Also. I didn’t think I’d see these 2 look as happy and emotional and star struck as they did with Noel Gallagher. However you achieved it. It was special for them and us and thank you for sharing your talent !!!
My initial reaction when hearing this caliber of playing is, "I'm a terrible guitar player..." but eventually that shifts to, "It's incredible that there are people that can do *this* with the same instrument I enjoy playing." Goodness. Thank you for introducing me to Jocelyn!
The key is just being the best you that you can be. Even if you think you suck. Find the thing that’s you and do that thing better than anybody. People want to compare Hendrix and Page which is stupid because Hendrix is the best Hendrix and Page is the best Page and that’s why they succeed. Jack White is the best Jack White. Nobody can be Jack White the way he does.
That was mesmerizing! You don't actually realize that you're in a trance until she stops playing. What a gentle soul and an incredible artist. One of the best TPS episodes ever.
So, the whole episode I’m thinking she has a great jazz tone without being muddy, her note choice is super interesting while always incredibly musical… and then she sings the last song, and it all comes together. The hybrid electric/acoustic recorded tone, the beautiful and always interesting harmony and melody choices, and HER VOICE!!! Beautiful, alluring, vintage and modern at the same time. This is all the best parts of jazz (in my uneducated opinion). What an absolute treat!
I smiled the whole time … she is a ray of sunshine. Gorgeous playing with passion and joy. And she can sing?! Oh, my. Fantastic episode and please keep pulling in broader influences.
Just wonderful to see Dan so moved by Jocelyn's sublime playing (and tone!) I was nearly in tears myself just seeing him! The embodiment of the power of music right there.
I saw Jocelyn at the Vancouver jazz fest recently- she is so humble that she didn’t even mention one of her albums won a Juno ( Canadian Grammy)- I wish this great talent all the best.
Great to see Jocelyn! We were TA's together at Michigan State from 2017-19 studying under Randy Napoleon! The Michigan community is cheering Jocelyn on as she becomes a world star. Wonderful!
I'm sorry I didn't photograph this talented young lady when I was "on the scene" in the jazz community in metro Detroit/Michigan/Midwest and Canada. Fortunately, I was able to photograph several faculty, alumni, etc. from Michigan State, Michigan, Wayne State, Oakland U, Cliff Bell's, etc. Those were the days... Chao. Retired Vietnam era veteran, ex Detroiter, expatriate, jazz photographer, etc. currently living in México and Colombia.
The Pedal Show has hit a home run with this interview. Wonderful to see a guitarist with such immense talent and enthusiasm. It was great to see both interviewers directly feel the music and become immersed in her playing. Much respect to this channel for such an eye opening interview.
This woman somehow makes everything wonderful. Humble, talented, happy, quirky, serious, all wrapped up in a a bundle of musical joy…… I love this person 🥰🥰
Yay! More jazz please! Jocelyn is brilliant. You guys should try to get Molly Miller if she ever comes across to the UK - another brilliant improvising musician and teacher, and with a unique sound that blends elements of rock. Darn That Dream, which she played around halfway, is a favourite of mine - especially Sonny Rollins version, but the final performance of My Old Flame gave me goosebumps - she has such a rich texture to her voice that lent the song the fragility it needs. Obviously Julian Lage and John Scofield would be the big names, but there are also plenty of brilliant young guitarists in the more contemporary London jazz scene that would be really interesting - Rob Luft would be very cool, for example - his latest album has been very well received. There’s so much great jazz happening in London right now it would be a shame not try to get one of those local players.
A few others to throw into the ring: Jonathan Kreisberg, Gilad Hekselman, Lage Lund, Mike Moreno & Oz Noy for a funkier side of jazz (more blues based fusion). All are AMAZING players
Dan & Mick; A wonderful episode! TPS is a comprehensive musical venue that is not pigeon-holed into just pedals, because pedals are a part of the over-all musical experience. Tone was still the name of the game with this episode. Jocelyn brought the tone, her tone for all of us to learn and enjoy from. Best Regards, James
Thank you so much for inviting Jocelyn - it was such an ear opening show. Without pedals. But with much fun and joy. I never heard someone play a C Major scale so intense and loved every tone. Thanks a lot! Cheers!
Jocelyn, I just wanted to comment about how HONEST you were in responding to the Pedal Dudes. I've taught for 11 years and played guitar for 20... no where at the level you play. But I can say, that self-honesty is one of the MOST important traits of a great teacher. Keep on the keeping on, Professor Gould!!!
Best episode yet. There are lots of people who can sing & play folk, blues, rock & pop guitar at the same time. It's a rarity in jazz for good reason. I love that she mentioned T-Bone Walker right off the bat. His tone is so open & woody. And he always seemed to have one foot in the jazz genre. Jocelyn's Benedetto with the wood bridge and tailpiece captures the same timbre and feel in the hands of an artist. Thanks Mick & Dan & Jocelyn (and Wes).
In a world of such terrifying diversity leading to so much hater and anger it's wonderful to remember that we are capable of such beauty. Thanks Dan and Mick
Absolutely. Superb. What a joy when Jocelyn began singing ❤ A classic episode where, as well as finding a new musician to enjoy, I learned new ideas to explore and deepened my appreciation of the guitar. Thank you 🙏🏼
Thank you guys! The laughter alone was worth the time spent watching. I would be telling her jokes all day. Such genuine heartfelt laughter I have not heard in a while...then she plays and sings her ass off.
Watching Jocelyn play opened my eyes to something I haven't paid attention to before: how important it is to listening to your playing yourself. She is so connected to the music, it is a joy to listen to.
We got a wonderful insight into some of the work that goes into these episodes on the recent Experience Day. The filming and recording are so beautifully done, and the interviewing is so enthusiastic and sympathetic. This is what happens when good people get together with good people!!
Man, I would pay about 200 bucks, maybe more, to go to an event like this in the states. Preferably the Philadelphia area. Pretty sure anyone can come to the country now, whether or not you succumbed to governmental health advice, if that’s what was holding you guys back.
Masterclass in the tonal relationship between fingers, pick angle and strings and the instrument itself. How an acoustic instrument is held, encouraging the wood to resonate. How a semi acoustic has more than just the pickup sound. The back to basics of focusing on the delicacy of slowly picking a simple scale and the subtle nuance of each note. This was “tone is in the fingers” magnified to the max. (No pedals either - name change to That Tonal Show?) And thats not even talking about the theory, which for me was way over my pay grade (I love jazz but still yet to find my bridge into fully getting a handle of practical theory application), but boy what a master musician Jocelyn is. And then then to top it off with that vocal performance at the end. What a show you had for us Dan & Mick! Many thanks.
One of the best guitar playing on TPS in my opinion. Thank you TPS for introduction another great artist I wouldn’t have found without this wonderful channel.
Grant Green and Kenny Burrell are my two favorite guitarists. My youngest child is named Wes. Glad to see you guys helping to expand the universe for rock guitarists who think SRV and Hendrix are the greatest guitar players ever.
l am of the same opinion as billbones1000, concerning his mention of Hendricks and Stevie being the greatest Guitarists to some players, I am of the opinion that Jazz players with great command of the instrument, whether Bebop Blues, and all Jazz style is my preferred Genres...
Thank you so much for introducing me to Jocelyn. Absolutely phenomenal and what an inspiration to a female blues guitarist trying to dabble in jazz. She gave me so many tips. Again, I can't thank you enough.
Absolutely stunned by Jocelyn. When she also started to sing on the same level I was about to lose my mind. Thank you very much for introducing this artist to me. Also a big compliment for the recording quality, those features are raising the bar on every level. Cheers mates.
What a talented and delightful guest. She smiled when she played, what a refreshing change. The lack of ego and the love for the instrument is wonderful. [Edit] I wrote the first bit before I heard her sing. Her voice is beautiful. Wowsers. Wowsers. Smokin’ I think they used to say way back when. It’s pure then does the “edge of break up (C)” thing.
Stumbled over this due to the YT algorithm and super happy I did. I have never heard of Jocelyn Gould and now I am going to check her out. I love her tone and story. I too have been a blues lover and player for years and fell into listening to the same guys as my ears developed. Also self taught but never really put in the time to learn to play jazz well enough as it was too complex. I tried once taking lessons from a guy who could play it but really did not know what to do with me....he felt I played well and he was used to real beginners. He taught me about a few scales but mostly I paid him to jam and grabbed a little info here and there before he decided to move to France....Anyway, I love it but work and family life sucked up all my time and energy for years. Now as a recent retiree, I am trying to get back to playing guitar and learning jazz but trying to figure out how best to approach it. There are a few guys that play jazz here but dont teach. I can learn other styles like rock, blues, Hawaiian slack key but not jazz. I love all those styles but really want to learn jazz, Dango jazz and fingerstyle.
years ago (50) I discovered jazz in and odd way .. found a cassette tape of Wes Montgomery on the road unwound on my paper my passion for blues .. then I discovered "the blues" and got lost in that pursuit .. listening to Miss Gould has really brought back as interest that I'd lost .. THANK YOU PEDAL MEN and J Gould .. WONDERFUL
For me this is one of the best TPS episodes… Yes there are a lot of great episodes; I am moved by the way Dan and Mick showing genuine interest. I believe that is the reason this show is churning fantastic contents out in weekly basis. Many thanks!
What a delightful player and human being! Each guest you have on helps restore my faith in humanity. Lovely people, hosts included, bringing music and joy to us. Many thanks.
Brilliant episode. Been following Jocelyn since the pandemic/ 2020. Fantastic that she’s now getting this level of exposure in the guitar community, so well deserved.
Wow, what an epic show. A good reminder to slow down and really listen and hear how your tone changes with even the smallest adjustments to your technique--and with no pedals or effects. I can imagine that very few guitarists ever reach this level of control and detail in their playing.
Was already a huge Jocelyn Gould fan before this episode. Now that I know she has been studying jazz for less than a decade I am amazed and perhaps a little jealous. Congratulations to her for her inspiring playing and success. If you come to Seattle I hope to grab a lesson.
Wes is my guitar hero. I don’t try to play like him, but he’s by far my favorite. And the language of bebop is very beautiful; sometimes it’s good to slow it down and see how the melodic lines infer the underlying chord progressions. I just recently “discovered” Jocelyn. She’s a wonderful musician, and I could see very early on in this video that she’s also a great teacher. It’s so nice to see younger musicians carrying the torch and adding their own touches. Bravo!
Way to represent the Peg! Your playing is amazing and yours such a great ambassador for Canada and Winnipeg and the great music community we have here.
Thanks for inviting Jocelyn! I'm a fan of the channel and it's always fun and informative to watch your videos, because you always think of great topics to discuss. I couldn't stop smiling throughout the whole video. It was such a joy to watch Jocelyn talking about music and, of course, I burst into tears with her beautiful, soulful and inspiring performance of those wonderful songs. Thanks again, Jocelyn and That Pedal Show!🥰
What a beautiful episode - I literally discovered Jocelyn yesterday on Instagram and to have this pop up today is an absolute joy. Can't wait to dive into her music more!
So then she sang....and I was even more amazed and blown away. God has blessed this woman. Thank you Jocelyn for taking the leap from playing for yourself to play for all of us!!
Wow! You guys never cease to impress me with your ability to branch out and explore different things. Jocelyn is an incredible guitar geek and player and it was wonderful to hear her talk about her story and her playing is wonderful! I totally get the teary eyes, its that good!
Best TPS episode in a while. She’s an incredible player, but moreso just an amazing communicator about music and how one can approach, ingest, learn, understand, and perform it.
Thank you for highlighting Jocelyn and her amazing talents. I immediately searched for her on Instagram and will be a dedicated follower. I will also be listening to her work over the weekend. She is fantastic.
Its awesome to see Jocelyn growing and flying, it was yesterday that I met her here in Winnipeg, first close contact at music program at University of Manitoba under Larry's Roy improvisation class, got to saw her and actually asked her to play with me at Hermano's a South American place of great food, drink and of course latin music, anyways, she is playing and singing beautiful. Thank you for the great video.
I've recently been lucky enough to befriend a classically trained musician and it's so game changing. The old adage of "true wisdom is knowing that you know nothing" is the best gift I've had since I heard the intro to Voodoo Chile or Brighton Rock as a bairn. This is so much additional food for thought.
I (apologetically Canadian) did not know Jocelyn was a Canadian. There is something about Winnipeg that produces so many amazing musicians! Thank you M&D and Jocelyn for a sonically wonderful as well as insightful and inspirational episode.
Wow... wow. It takes a certain courage and trust in your audience for a show dedicated to mangling a guitar signal through so many transistors to focus on the two best pedals in the room - her hands, through as good an acoustic instrument as exists. The Two Rock tubes didn't hurt, but... Well done, boys. More please. Now, I'm off to consume more from Jocelyn.
Talk about timing - I just told my partner last week, after nearly 40 years of playing, I wanted to really get into jazz guitar. And then this treat shows up. What an incredible player (and singer!).
Hey guys, just want to say that this has been one of my favorite episodes. I am so impressed with Jocelyn's talent and down-to-earth personality. I now have a new artist to listen to on the HiFi. Great episode and hope to see you guys at NAMM. Cheers, Vinny the Axe
First of all…absolutely stellar playing! Being “That Pedal Show” though, as a sometimes touring jazzer, I do bring a small board, mostly so I can fine tune the eq shape of the amp in the room (especially when stuck with whatever amp is there), plus my own reverb.
You know what, Guys? The nicest thing in this episode (and many others) is your complete humility. It`s one thing to be a guitar tech nerd-geek-kind of thing. But Dan starts there, then Mick gets it. And it's like-"Hang on, there is something more here" and joins in. It's just beautiful.
Laughed so hard when at 11 minutes in " just add a two five one-line, you can change the the blues..." Mick was gone!!😅 Wonderful episode. Lovely with some female energy in the room and such great tone and timing. Must. Play. More.
A few weeks back I made a statement about these types of videos and will admit, that I was wrong to do so. I loved this episode so much that I was just blown away. Thanks for doing this!!!
She is only going to get better, and better, AND BETTER with age and experience. She's already so amazing. She'll be up there with the likes of Ed Bickert as well. Wonderful person! And a fantastic interview!
That woody, earthy tone is just fantastic. Have never been that into bebop jazz but I am starting to really like smooth jazzy blues instrumental pieces. Super interesting guest and episode. What a player Jocelyn is!
Jazz guitar to me is trigonometry while rock and blues is fifth grade math. I will always admire the jazz players for their skill and knowledge. Great episode guys. What a humble gal and letting her share so much while you guys stayed quiet was just great
Very rare to see someone who's soul shines bright just talking about music! She's on a beautiful organic high that drugs nor pot can take you to, THIS IS BEAUTY AND A JOY TO WATCH, Thanks!!!!!
This was my favorite episode of the pedal show! In addition to her great playing, I love Jocelyn's laughing spirit. Then at the end when she sang! She could have a great career as a singer even if she didn't play guitar.👍👍👍
It is so good to see music as a human expression, much further than production and gear! This was a show that made me to respect TPS even more! Congrats for the guest you brought for us!
Whatever genre you want to learn, learn the songs of that genre. If you want to learn jazz, pick 5 standards you like and learn them back to front, then you’ve got a context for all that juicy goodness Jocelyn was talking about. It took me about 15 years to realise that!
Thank you Mick, Dan, and your team! Easily one of the best TPS episodes, ever! My wife and I had the good fortune of seeing Jocelyn and her quartet live in Montreal a month ago. What an outstanding artist, authentic human being, and Inspiring musician! Btw, her new album Rocks!
I studied classical guitar in college but my last year i took jazz lessons with our awesome jazz dept head. I was burnt out and much of it didnt really sink in. Listening to Jocelyn talk and play has inspired me to dig out my old notes and books and try and learn this language again!
Thanks for bringing Jocelyn to the rest of us. I've myself been struggling over the past few years to learn jazz guitar and she clearly has a native talent to hear and understand complex harmonies that I could only dream of. She's also clearly a really lovely person, she reminds me a bit of Bill Frisell, another graceful and generous soul. And I was very surprised to learn she's from of all places, Winnipeg. That's where I was born as well. Not a lot of great jazz guitarists come out of Winnipeg... I now have to go out and find some of her recordings, a new fan meets a new teacher.
Can we get a subseries about starting jazz? Apart from my own benefit, I want to see the day when Mick makes casual remarks about applications of theory and the harmonics of augmented chords while rolling off a Fuzz Face circuit.
Mind blown, guitar skills on another planet and then……..that voice 😮
Amazing talent and personality. Was great to watch you perform. I have been down a 10 year rabbit hole with picks myself. Thanks again.
I just haven't managed to forget that no matter how incomprehensible what I'm hearing, there's a tear drop rolling down my left cheek 🎵
Wow. Jocelyn. I am blown away and will now seek to listen whenever I can. Also. I didn’t think I’d see these 2 look as happy and emotional and star struck as they did with Noel Gallagher. However you achieved it. It was special for them and us and thank you for sharing your talent !!!

Very well said Tyler. I feel exactly the same way, it’s almost liberating in fact.
Couldn’t have said it better

Amen..I have same sentiment...Thanks for introducing her to us that are unfamiliar
same! We're all on the journey together.
Jocelyn is my professor at Humber College she rips so hard on guitar and a super lovely person
Me? Envy you? No… not at all 🙈
Thats so cool!!!
Ha! I was looking for another humber cat… now we will sit here in TH-cam anonymity mwuahahaha…
That was mesmerizing! You don't actually realize that you're in a trance until she stops playing. What a gentle soul and an incredible artist. One of the best TPS episodes ever.

Great suggestion! Martin Taylor would also be an interesting feat
I second the Molly Miller suggestion. She is terrific.
I should have led with how great this show was. Fabulous and educational.
Julian Lage was my bridge

Wonderful episode, Dan and Mick, thanks for bringing Jocelyn to the show!
In a world of such terrifying diversity leading to so much hater and anger it's wonderful to remember that we are capable of such beauty. Thanks Dan and Mick
Better say.. thanks Jocelyn!
My 16 year old daughter just walked in the room, caught about 1 second of Jocelyn playing and said, "That's going to make Dan cry."
Absolutely. Superb.
What a joy when Jocelyn began singing ❤
A classic episode where, as well as finding a new musician to enjoy, I learned new ideas to explore and deepened my appreciation of the guitar.
Thank you 🙏🏼

I second the motion for Philadelphia, you have many fans here I'm sure. Please give us a visit!
One of the best guitar playing on TPS in my opinion. Thank you TPS for introduction another great artist I wouldn’t have found without this wonderful channel.
Man I needed this, thank you, I cried with her singing/song, lovely. What the world needs now is more of this energy.
Grant Green and Kenny Burrell are my two favorite guitarists. My youngest child is named Wes. Glad to see you guys helping to expand the universe for rock guitarists who think SRV and Hendrix are the greatest guitar players ever.

What a show guys. After being awed by Jocelyn' sublime playing, being rewarded at the very end to hear her voice, was the icing on the cake.
Did not expect that voice! What a lovely introduction you guys have given us to a wonderful performer

"It's a trick if you can do it once, it's a skill if you can't not do it"
Learnt this from a jazz drum teacher. It's helped a bunch.

I'm not a fan of jazz myself, but it is great to see someone who is very proficient at it. I can just sit back, watch admire and learn.😃
Thank you both for exposing me to yet another fantastic artist! What an extraordinary talent. Great episode, all.
WOW! Jocelyn is amazing! It's like having Joe Pass and Ella all put into one person. This video made my day! Thank you Mick and Dan!
Yes, when I saw her holding the guitar, I immediately thought of Joe Pass!
Wow! You guys never cease to impress me with your ability to branch out and explore different things. Jocelyn is an incredible guitar geek and player and it was wonderful to hear her talk about her story and her playing is wonderful! I totally get the teary eyes, its that good!
Jocelyn’s laugh is infectious! What a wonderful guitarist.
What a great episode, Jocelyn is an amazing musician and a lovely person - thank you TPS for the introduction. And not a pedal in sight either! 😅
Dang she’s very well spoken, charming, hell of a player AND hell of a singer, great stuff!
I (apologetically Canadian) did not know Jocelyn was a Canadian. There is something about Winnipeg that produces so many amazing musicians! Thank you M&D and Jocelyn for a sonically wonderful as well as insightful and inspirational episode.
It's so nice to see the emotion behind these sessions.
Wow...
Ha! Totally! We know it’s called That Pedal Show…. But it’s really That Guitar Tone & Playing Enthusiasm Show. Hahaha!
Wow that opening almost brought me to tears as well. Such lovely tone, timing, and dynamics!
Cheers,
Vinny the Axe
The future of jazz is very secure and in the hands of young masters such as Jocelyn. Great show, gents.
Bring in more jazz artists when possible.
Laughed so hard when at 11 minutes in " just add a two five one-line, you can change the the blues..." Mick was gone!!😅
Wonderful episode.
Thank you for bringing her music to us-thoroughly enjoyed-couldn’t help smiling being surprised as she started singing-beautiful.
What a humble gal and letting her share so much while you guys stayed quiet was just great
Her voice is just as incredible as her playing! The tone is crazy
I come away form most jazz guitar videos on youtube feeling mortified and demoralized. This video has me inspired. Great job, Jocelyn!
This has been a university course in one episode…and she played one of my favorite songs! “My Old Flame”
…and such a fabulous singer!
Absolutely wonderful idea of having Jocelyn on. Such a departure from your usual discussions, but also so apt and appropriate. She's a gem!
Thanks for bringing her forward. Jocelyn Gould is a lovely lady and a tremendous instrumentalist. Cheers
She’s phenomenal, a friendship with Joey Landreth must be a gift that really keeps on giving.
For Joey! 😂
That was awesome! Thanks so much to the three of you!
Man that performance at the end was fantastic!🥲
Just perfect! The interview, the playing and singing, the excitement on her face at being at Schwangrila. This is That Pedal Show Gold!!
Just beautiful playing and singing! The recording is fabulous too. You’ve come a long way since that pedal shed, top notch!
Hahahah! We sure have. Thanks Isaac! And thanks Austrian Audio, Neumann, AMS Neve and Universal Audio. That stuff makes it eeeeaaassssy!
Very rare to see someone who's soul shines bright just talking about music! She's on a beautiful organic high that drugs nor pot can take you to, THIS IS BEAUTY AND A JOY TO WATCH, Thanks!!!!!
man, what a prime, superb music class was this episode!
This was my favorite episode of the pedal show! In addition to her great playing, I love Jocelyn's laughing spirit. Then at the end when she sang! She could have a great career as a singer even if she didn't play guitar.👍👍👍
Best episode of the year 😎
It is so good to see music as a human expression, much further than production and gear! This was a show that made me to respect TPS even more! Congrats for the guest you brought for us!
Jocelyn’s the best!
Jocelyn is amazing. Thanks for introducing me to her. I am a big fan and it's only been a few hours!
Whatever genre you want to learn, learn the songs of that genre. If you want to learn jazz, pick 5 standards you like and learn them back to front, then you’ve got a context for all that juicy goodness Jocelyn was talking about. It took me about 15 years to realise that!
Agree totally. It is all about making music, not gear! 😂😎
Great musician. Incredible guitar.
I studied classical guitar in college but my last year i took jazz lessons with our awesome jazz dept head. I was burnt out and much of it didnt really sink in. Listening to Jocelyn talk and play has inspired me to dig out my old notes and books and try and learn this language again!
This is why we all love the guitar. That you can go from this to Rabea via Joey and Johnny and Noel. No other instrument can delight in so many ways.
THIS! Thank you. :0)
Hahahahah! Maybe that’s my parallel universe!
Best interview in years. Jocelyn is a true artist and an incredible musicians. Thanks!
