  • Rick drops in to chew the fat on guitar tone, recording and all that good stuff
    Welcome friends and thank you for joining us for this very special episode. We are delighted to welcome the incomparable Rick Beato to the show! Rick is a musician, educator, producer and well, all-round sensation on TH-cam, having clocked up close to 3.5 million subscribers at the time of this video. That’s about 10 times That Pedal Show, just to put it into perspective.
    Rick contacted us to say he was heading to the UK, so we jumped at the chance of inviting him to Schwangri-La for a chat.
    There is sooooo much stuff we could have talked about, but we decided to centre on a general discussion around producing and recording guitar. Rick’s knowledge and insight on the subject is a treat for all of us.
    Please note, Rick doesn’t play in this video. For whatever reason he didn’t feel like playing today.
    And neither did Dan, so don’t get all handbag that it’s me playing and not them (Mick here, hello. Must be something I said?!).
    Enjoy the video, and after that, head on over to That Pedal Shop to see what yer can find! www.thatpedalshop.com

      Thanks to Mick, Dan and you Rick for sharing your passion and knowledge. About the ability of music to reinvent itself, the impact of DAWs, analog vs digital : I encourage you to go watch Fred Again..'s Tiny Desk Concert. There's no guitar in it but it's the best of both worlds : real instruments playing, emotion, mastering digital tools, sound shaping and the driving pulse brought by the techno revolution.

    What makes Beato great?
    He obviously have a fantastic memory. When he has heard or learned something one time, he remember it forever.
    His mind is obviously also very good at problem solving. Figuring out complex challenges.
    Combine that with passion, a kind soul, and be able to express his thoughts.

    I had the opportunity too meet Rick back in the 80s. I was living in NYC . I was sitting on a bench just hanging out near Bleeker street and playing my acoustic. Up walks Rick. We talked for awhile and he asked me if I knew any stones songs. I started too play Angie. As it turns out it was his favorite stones song. Hard to believe that was so many years ago

      @@foolhardymcpain I know Mick has interviewed some of the biggest names, but the interview is not what I'm referring to. It's when Mick started playing and asking about their sound. It was cute, it was genuine, and of course it comes from them being humble.

    The man's a genius... Figuring out Carlton at fourteen is beyond mind boggling... When I was fourteen I was trying to master an F barre chord...

    • @smelltheglove2038
      @smelltheglove2038 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I kinda wish I didn’t learn barre chords first, I wish I had learned inversions first. To be fair, learning the “E” and “A” shape barre chord is a fantastic way to learn your root notes and you’re well on your way to understanding the fretboard.

    • @StratsRUs
      @StratsRUs ปีที่แล้ว

      @Smell The Glove Learning the open chords and barre chords first is best for memorisation and placement/muscle memory.
      Then ideally revisiting them ,music-theoretically, later on and seeing the r,3,5 etc is a more satisfactory way of understanding the major scale and its magic.

      I think I was closer to 17 when I actually went in and tackled F barre. When I look back at it, the song I was learning at the time might not even use the full F barre. Still, I learned it because it felt like the right time to do it. Nowadays I "Hendrix" it most of the time.

    Man, this is about the ultimate guitar / sound geek-out discussion I've ever listened to. All of the great rock LPs have so much layering going on from during recording, effects, amps, the room, mike choices / setup - and then there's the mix-down tricks. And so much amazing stuff was done before the digital era went totally crazy. I'm in awe of Rick and great sound engineers. But Rick, he's that rare bird who has the chops, knows all the theory stuff, AND the engineering. Gosh, if there was ever a man who does what he was created to do - it's Rick! Not to mention, he's so entertaining and fascinating to listen to explain and deconstruct things. Great video, guys!

    Looove hearing more about Rick's path through life! Given his thirst for always learning, not surprising what he's achieved. Kudos to all here!

    I remember Rick's very first videos, and I became one of his subs way below the 50K mark on his channel. And I discovered you guys almost around the same time. What a thrill to see all of you in one room. Huzzah!!!

Mick, you're so well prepared and it is pure joy to be in the receiving end. So much good information and knowhow to take away today. Thanks so much, Rick, Dan and Mick! Cheers, Thor

    that was so great listening to this interview -awesome ! Rick is so experienced in the trenches and he is so intelligent and so practical in his approach to music and producing ! Loved this. Contextual examples were great as it all depends on what's going on in the song. Fantastic. Thanks Pedal Show - big fan.

    I just adore all 3 of you - and both of your lovely off camera, but just as fascinating teams and families. What makes this song great? It's all of you and a long list of lovely, passionate personalities and inspiring musicianship. You have made the world more of a home - and have brought our heroes right up close. It's an amazing time to be! I am so grateful!

    Dan and Mick, you've both provided great content for a long time. Always good to acknowledge others in the field of podcasting. I haven't heard the horn for awhile, a nice tribute. Thanks for sharing. Rick Beato is someone I seen on my recommendations but never checked out for some reason. Now I'm going to have to.
