As a child growing up in the 90's, I never understood everyone's admiration for Princess Diana. As an adult woman now, I have joined in the admiration. She was compassionate, intelligent, brave, and ahead of her time in so many ways.

If their blood mixed with a cut on each of their hands then there’s a possibility she could. It can be passed through broken skin, so yea this handshake could have been deadly or given her HIV which then can lead to AIDS. Most of you are too young to know this. I was in the midst of it as the AIDS epidemic started. I was working at a hospital and we got special education on how to put on protective masks and clothes to enter a room with an aids sick person. It was full covering outfits, two gloves at least, mask and face shield. I remember being accidentally pricked by a used needle, but the patient was “a married man with a wife so he couldn’t possibly have aids” as they told me. Yes, the ignorance was HUGE and the fright was even bigger. People would go other paths not to pass the aids ward, as if breathing the air would kill us. I can only imagine the hate all homosexual men went through at that time. When Diana shakes hands with these sick men, she turned the world upside down. There was huge columns about it in the newspapers. Was she restless or stupid, or what? At the same time we at the hospital got new info as fast as it came out, we did not use masks or shields anymore, only gloves if we had a skin lesion on our hands. We knew now that it was transferred through bodily fluids and also lesbians could get it. Even those who had blood transfusions. Still it scared everyone, because this was before the aids cocktail was invented. Everyone with aids died. So many young guys died that could have been saved if they had lived just five more years. Diana made way for a more human approach to the aids sick. By shaking hands and later also hugging them, everyone knew that if a princess was allowed to do it, it could not be that dangerous, and she changed more than you can imagine with her act of kindness. What she did changed history, it changed lives, opinions and possibly the further tries to find a cure or treatment. She was an extraordinary woman who put her entire heart into all her work.

May just seem like a handshake now, but at the time, it was a gesture that sent a big message to the public. Not sure why this being acknowledged upsets you
@@otero30 No, it's not a "at the time" thing, you're conflating an individual occurence with "it was that way". Go into a school today, tell the students one of their peers is badly diseased, I can guarantee you he'll have the same experience from some people. You don't even need diseases to see that, just observe a ginger or a student with glasses. @@lovleyloner1487 so at this point in time (1987) it had been known for quite some time that HIV was sexually transmitted. But much of the public was still very ignorant on the disease as western political leaders intentionally ignored the epidemic for a near decade because the disease was killing almost exclusively gay men.
If their blood mixed with a cut on each of their hands then there’s a possibility she could. It can be passed through broken skin, so yea this handshake could have been deadly or given her HIV which then can lead to AIDS. I was so taken back from it that i had to ask her "really?!". Wow, she was different, i felt. I wish i had spent more time talking to her before she left.
Dirty Diana? I knew her too...
U met her lucky
Same.
This is amazing
@@DanceySteveYNWA what????
Bruh, she is smarter than most people. AIDS don't catch by handshaking, talking, or normal actions.
edit: MOTHER IM FAMOUS YOOOO
right.. you can tell that nasty nurse was uncomfortable too
That's true..Diana is an Ex-assistant preschool teacher before. She suppose to be reading a lott of book as knowledge.
There was an incredible stigma at the time. Even decades later in the 2000’s people still had misinformation about HIV and AIDS. What Diana did as a young popular figure was show everyone watching that if she could do it, the stigma was unfounded. She normalized it for many people in many countries to help bring awareness to treating people with dignity and not shame.
At the time they didn't know how Aids was transmitted
They didn’t know this at the time it was a brand new disease. They thought it could be spread like that. For example Magic Johnson got HIV while he was playing for the NBA. Players didn’t want to play with him because they thought they could get HIV from his sweat.
Her love & compassion for others is what made her shine! She was such a special Princess & would have made an awesome & epic queen. May she Rest In Peace.
💜💕❤️🙏🌈💜💕❤️🙏🌈
yes because shes a master scientist right?
If people didn't know yet about the disease, why does this even matter. Let people make their own choice.
@@AC-mp7cx what has science got to do with her being compassionate? Your comment to my comment makes no sense.

Before this moment many people were ignorant to the fact that you couldn’t catch aids just from touching someone. Her doing that changed the course of this mindset forever, she was a gem who didn’t judge anyone
My grandfather was a doctor and when he had aids patients he would literally just give them a hug and they would cry because they weren’t getting touched at all anymore because people thought they would catch it.
Princess Diana's compassion and bravery will always be remembered and admired.
womp womp poor chicken
She may have just been a princess but she was a true queen.
edit: if you’re gonna say anything abt the late queen, don’t, that’s not what we’re talking abt
edit: yall really don’t get it😭
She still remains the most loved royal of all time
I'm not liking this comment cos I randomly came across it and really wanted to like it but guess what '8' is my lucky number
You know who was a true queen? Queen Elizabeth
@@Glitchbaby um ok but who was talking abt her…

Even the nurse was shocked she was like "👀"
She's the only Royal to make me cry with her kindness...she would've done great things for this world 💚💚💚 I love you Princess
Thank you so much for this memorable handshake.
Breaking the barrier of discrimination.
In 87 people still thought you can catch AIDS from breathing the same air as an AIDS patient. The simple act of her shaking their hands helped to end the stigma and get people to pay attention to the need for medicine and AIDS education.
During the same time when hospitals literally set ablaze an ambulance that carried an AIDS patient, this woman shook their hands❤
My dad grew up in a remote town in Greece and doesnt speak a single word in English, he has no idea who any outside celebrities are, yet he knew about this handshake "Princess Diana shook hands with people who had AIDS" he used to tell me. THATS how impactful and historical this moment was.
She was amazing.
Princess Diana is the most down to earth person I've ever heard of in my entire life..
That's what happens when you don't read your bible
Lolololololo A fake princess is your idol
@Avalanchee bro, the only reason said that was she is not the most down to earth person ever there has been, I know she was humble a spirit
She was bipolar and had bpd. She was definitely not "down to earth"
Princess Diana 👑was a powerful supporter to people who was terribly sick. Diana gave them understanding and pride in themselves. Princess Diana face, she looks so concerned about them all. ♥️Diana, the world’s, Queen of Hearts.
She was an extraordinary woman who put her entire heart into all her work.
thank you so much for sharing your perspective and opinion! ive heard about how important this moment was but this really sealed in how impactful it was
this just made me cry she is so so kind
Sounds like Covid if you ask me
She was extraordinary! 😊
Thank you for this informative comment, just wanted to suggest changing where you said “lesbians can also get it” to ANYONE can get It ❤
She should have been a world leader. Ironic how the world puts down and takes away true powerful and good beacons of hope and light in this world.
She is truly a angel. She deserved so much better..
Edit: ty for 100+ likes ^^
I remember how big of a deal this was, by her doing this at the time; she humanized AIDS patients everywhere. Such a beautiful woman inside and out, her presence is truly missed.
Even the nurse Warned her and she was so surprised that she shook his hand 💖
It’s the way the nurse low key smiled after Diana shook his hand 🫶🏼🥹
I'm doubtful the nurse 'warned her' at all. I think you made that up
@@helen1552 definitely not true, i read about this in a book I had back in middle school.
That last photo of her is one of the PRETTIEST. Captures her so natural and her eyes sparkle. What a beautiful woman she was inside and out~
Bless those people. They went through so much. Diana was so kind and made them feel, and realize, that they were human again.
