Thank you for a well thought-out analysys and review! I am very happy to hear that you liked gunplay, since it was the main feature of a mod and it was really hard to judge it for myself, let alone actually make it right. Gunplay was always my main gripe with HL2, it felt a bit empty, and too random, with almost no player control, and I'm glad to hear that none of our additions ruin the game in any way, but do exactly opposite to that. I'd also like to thank you for helping me with your constructive criticism, suggestions and feedback at release date, many of your suggestions and bug fixes were added in patch 1.1 and few of them will be added in patch i'm currently working on.
My end-goal as a mod maker is just to make people happy, and seeing that I succeeded at that ( for the most part ) just warms my heart, and that's all I truly want, nothing else. I couldn't have asked for a better outcome :D
I'm glad to know my input helped! The biggest improvement from launch to 1.1 was more flinch as it turned the combine from bullet sponges to more diverse enemy types with clear ways to defeat them. I agree that HL2's gunplay was a bit shallow, especially compared to the original. Hell, I've made entire videos about that in the past.
Any way, you've put in a lot of work for this mod and deserve positive feedback.
I for one am downloading HL2 for the first time in years tomorrow to play through with this mod i played through this game countless times years ago and now I really want to go back again great mod!
For playing it some myself, yeah the little things that this adds is definitely making it better for me. One thing I noticed is the dirt on Gordon's glasses, for a person who wears glasses, I personally enjoyed seeing the dirt show up since I know exactly what it's like to have dirt on your glasses all the time. I'm only just in the beginning part and just got the SMG right now, so I have yet to see everything. And for just the fact that this took nearly a decade, that's true dedication. I really hope you don't get screamed at by the "purists" since the game is more the ten years old itself, so updating it like this is better than what HL2 Update did in general.

The likening things to FEAR makes a lot of sense, as GM did work a lot on a FEAR MMod prior to this. FEAR 1 should honestly be held as a gold standard of gunplay and ideas for a lot of shooters of the early-to-mid 00's.
I will never understand game purists. The point of mods is to make the game what the player wants it to be. If a mod isnt made for you, its made for a different group of people. If you want to replay the game you have been playing vanilla for years, but dont want anything changed, dont look for mods because that is not what they are for.

The fact that the overwatch soldiers now utilize the smg's grenade launcher really took me by surprise when I first tried this mod. Plus that AR2 reload...

I download a mod for a different experience in the same engine/univerese, this is why minerva and underhell(the best hl2 mod of all time) are really good and acclaimed

People gave this mod problems? Lol everything is optional. I also thought that ADS would have not have been great but this mod proves me wrong. Its just nice to be able to get a little zoom when hitting enemies who are further away or on catwalks. It also gives options like the pistol more versatility and makes them feel better. I also love the tighter spread. Like the original spread of the guns just felt wrong compared to how they look. Now its much nicer.

Cinmeatic Mod is good, feels like the beta in a lot of ways, it's just excessive with some of the prop placement and bad graffiti. Where the exessive prop placement shines is the end game, the rubble in the end battles looks absolutley incredible. A reduced Cinematic Mod combined with this mod's weapons and effects would be the ultimate HL2 experience.
2 years ago i made mod to remove the bad graffiti and the porn stuff from the mod that way it's alot better.

I always thought the Sight on the Mp7 was funny which always reminded me: Half Life 2 was from the period where if you had an attachment or optic on your gun, it was probably just there to look cool and that's it.
I honestly love quality of life enhancements to games. I'll be a purist about making the weapons sound or feel like they did originally, but if you can make the gun look better, actually improve how it feels, make it sound better, give it better animations (or ones that make sense) I'm totally down with that. When it comes to game mods I love Quality of Life mods, or just balls to the wall Crazy ones. Half Life 2 for me has mods that mainly just make the weapons perform better and look nicer, and on the other hand you got L4D2 where I don't even know what game I'm playing anymore but at least I'm having fun.
One bit of trivia with the MP7/SMG1 is that if you do aim with the original model, you'll see parts of the sight are missing. It was made to only be viewed from it's default angle, so the underside of the top of the sight is missing.

HL has been my lifelong fav series and I've been loving the lore friendly version so far(I've only just gotten the gun on the airboat so not far in yet) I'm not a diehard purest but I absolutely notice the differences but I love the extra effort put in to make the game shine. I noticed a few things that seemed incomplete so I'm glad to hear we'll be getting new stuff eventually.

I love the old and I also love the new Doom. I grew up playing the old style Doom but willing to give mods and game remakes a try before making my choices. Purists need to take the pacifier out of their mouths and enjoy the games and mods we have

I LOVE it! Its the perfect blend between OG Doom and modern gaming.
But Doom 3.. I had great memories of it (was only 4 years old when it came out), my dad used to play it. Bought it on a steam sale, but I shouldnt have. The darkness of that game seriously annoys the hell out of me (pun intented)
But the thing is that doom 2016 and eternal is the closest thing that we can get as full game from such a big developer(and I love it it's awesome)
I cannot understand the purists on HL2. The amount of mods that had been released for only the base game itself should counteract that sentiment. Are these people angry because the mod does not cater to them? There is absolutely no reason to send death threats to people who mod a game. I hope these people are in a vocal minority.
Why do purists have to hate modding? Of all things, modding does not destroy the game you have bought and played. Simply ignore it, going out of your way to hate on something that you have to go out of your way to install and play means they want to hate something.

I LIKE it! It makes the enemies much more of a challenge even if you use the limited autohealing like I did. Seing the Overwatvh Soldier shooting with the secondary fire of the SMG makes them a lot more believable.

Half-Life 2 is a huge part of my childhood, and to this day my favorite game of all time, and even I can admit that it's not perfect... There's a lot of things that I would improve. Some people are ridiculous.
I really like the MMoD. It is exactly the mod that HL2 needed.
But I always found the mods that tell completely new stories or total conversions the more interesting ones. Like Entropy : Zero, MINERVA, Research and Development or Nightmare House 2. thanks to MMoD I can play these and other mods with the improvements and changes of MMoD. It is basically Mod-Ception.
Half-Life 2 : MMod is the ultimate HL2 experience, though quite a bit heavy at launch (performance-wise, if you don't get atleast a good 1gb videocard, it will be stuck at 30-40fps in a gunfight), it improves at EVERY single aspect HL2 had and no other modder could do, improved gunplay, new animation styles, new weapon models, though about animations, the one that bothers me is the Crossbow (the way he pulls back the string one-handed, that thing is REALLY heavy), yet it looks awesome and smooth, the effects are beautiful, but as with everything good, there's its cons aswell, in the end, nothing is perfect (Also take note by the time im typing this comment, i'm playing the release version), the projectiles are a nice addition but they're too slow, and sometimes it is waay too difficult to hit an enemy at long range since they have time to dodge it just like the AR2 secondary fire, also, in the end of Episode 1, the Strider deals too much damage even on Easy, and it takes SEVENTEEN rockets to destroy it on Normal, while in the original HL2 it takes 5 Easy, 7 Normal/Hard, i died so many times do it hitting me from behind cover and because it was stuck on a really fast fire rate i couldn't expose myself to shoot due to taking almost 70 damage in a single burst, you tried to make it a bossfight, i get it, but still, lower the Strider rate-of-fire, or this Strider in particular, damage, as there is only one Strider fought in Episode 1, it would be even easier, and keep up it's high health pool, or lower it a bit, the point of a boss fight, is to it be challenging, not impossible and frustrating, overall, the mod is really good, my game just crashed once which was really funny tbh, and i had a good experience over the 3 games, a really well made mod, that needs a few tweaks (which i imagine were made in Release 1.1)
All the cons you listed were things I suggested. They were fixed in the 1.1 patch. Install that patch, don't play 1.0. Also striders taking a million rockets was a bug that was never intended. Also fixed in 1.1.
Honestly, I've just finished a walkthrough of HL2 Update MMod, and it's better than the original if you turn off projectile bullets and improved aiming of combines (that breaks the balance). Weapons feel much better, everything about visuals is customizable, and overall you get something that feels more modern and polished than just HL2.
The projectile bullets destroy the shotgun. But I really love the new appearance of bullets. So it's a hard choice to make. In my opinion improved aiming just make combine soldiers lore-friendlier. Especially when on hard mode you can easily get into a hell of precise smg grenades and begin to think about what a terror these transhuman cynernetic-argumented guys are to those resistance soldiers (and sometimes you) that get instantly killed.

What i also find cool about this mod is that the Combine that have an SMG are now able to use the alt-fire grenade even tough they can fucking shot that thing over a really long distance andstill hit which is sometimes annoying but also cool and for some odd reason the Combine in MMod love to chuck Grenades at you if there is about 5 or more combine I had to run back and hde somewhere a lot of times because when I walk around a corner there is just 3 Grenades flying at me but I also kinda like that ^^
I like this mod a lot and this is also my first ever HL2 mod I actually played I have been playing HL2 Vanilla over and over again for like 8 years which is a lot
The AI's fascination with grenades reminds me of the marine AI in the original HL.
Worse off for them in my playthrough, I’d bait them to throw grenades then send them back with the gravity gun.

Giving weapons more depth is always nice. Making combat more frantic drives home that "last-ditch effort to save Earth" vibe.
MMod is great. I think it definitely improves the overall game-play experience. I played it on hard with the increased combine accuracy and bullets as projectiles. It was incredibly hard, but also really cool. The street wars were so punishing.
That bit about HL community being purists is SO fuckin true. I literally saw a 50 page flame war on whether or not Gordon wears a fucking helmet.
To me, bad AA breaks immersion more than graphics outdated by years. The improvement to AA and explosions REALLY improves the feel of the game to me.
I've been waiting for a mod like this for so long. Playing through it is really like playing through HL2 for the first time.
I absolutely agree with your view on on Half-Life purist. I remember people saying "the cinematic mod is garbage" or something similar and then I watched your video on it. I decided to give CM a chance and I really like it. The game felt different (but not too different) and looked great. A lot of the "lore breaking" stuff can be disable so I don't get the hate for it. Want to play Half-Life 2 as intended? Then don't download the mod (or any mods) and keep playing the same game you beat 15 years ago.
The only Major problem with cinematic mod is the game file side increase dramatically.
I just finished playing the full release of Black Mesa and have been wanting to continue the Half-Life timeline by replaying HL2, but I was concerned about the jarring change in style going directly between them. Looks like the perfect time to try out this mod!
One thing is that there is a file in the mod that you can put in a custom folder to have iron sights on all weapons
I hope some of the modders dare to combine the MMod and Cinematic Mod, combining texture and design of Cinematic Mod with MMod features.

Looks amazingly good! The movement looks a bit more like HL1 and those effect... So satisfying!
Yeah, the graphical updates are only semi-noticeable but it really shines in firefights with enemies who have glow effects.

At this point, I don't think purists can be called fans. As they just want the base game and hate everything else. A fan would see anything good or bad as another option. A purist can and will rage at a dev for changing a texture.

Originally I was buying Half Life 2, Episode 1 and 2 only to have no errors in Garry's Mod but when I saw MMod I played Half Life 2, Episode 1 and the majority of 2 with it. I had more fun in battles with the MMod weapons as with the vanilla ones.

I get why people may not have liked Cinematic mod all that much, but I personally love it. Sure, its got some questionable inclusions, but I can't hate a mod that clearly has a shitload of talent and work put behind it. The environmental design and atmosphere was top notch. He just went overboard with the new alyx models. Beyond that, I thought it was really good. MMod would be a great mod to run alongside it.

Agreed. Not knocking HL2 in any way, but I always find myself playing HL1 just for the heck of it. There's something about how it plays that just feels so satisfying.
Xen was good. The first time playing the game, the Xen chapters were hard but after that it was very easy to complete them. I never had a problem with the platforming in HL1 to be honest.
Those weapon animations are juicy, imma try this mod.

Honestly this mod is awesome, it makes the gunplay feel so much better the combine is actually fun to fight now which is the best. I was skeptical of ADS at first but damn, I kinda love it, usually in games it feels slower, which is fine but i was worried it wouldn't work in half life but honestly it feels really good, I think they've updated weapons so the sights actually line up too. This mod pretty much fixes my main gripes with base hl2.

The maker of this mod was in ukraine and had to flee. Needless to say all his work is on hiatus at the moment.

The Lore Friendly Version should get an update, where they make the crosshair more easy to see, it blends in with the environment.
Pretty nice. Those weapon animations looking great. Cinematic Mod was also good though. Most people tend to only look at the extra playermodels that were provided but *optional* .
The combat in half-life was very linear and scripted, but they were going for a cinematic experience, so it is expecting too much to expect the AI to dynamically adapt to players playing in unexpected ways.
I really enjoyed the M-Mod. Smooth, and I actually really loved the improved gunplay. I thought I'd hate it, but no, it was great.
one cool thing about MMod is that the npcs can actually not see you. I noticed this in Minerva when I squatted down Ina corner and a soldier ran right past me
I'm always a fan of mods that simply aim to make an existing game better without deviating all that much from the original developers' vision. This seems to be exactly that.

My HDD space ran out when i was playing Doom 3 for the first time and it was Vanilla! God saved me that day.
The combat and guns with this mod is incredible. Sure the physics-based projectile system that's an option is not realistic, but boy does it look and feel good seeing bullets zip through the air leaving smoke trails behind them.
This mod did make it much more challenging as a game, at least for people who suck like me.
Purists are a nemesis of classic games. They always complain and whine about mods trying to make a new or exciting way to experience a beloved game and ruining it to appeal their ideals further discouraging creative folks to make something different without getting absolutely obilerated by them. And worst are kids who act like and think of themselves as veterans and always blindly hate on things that aren't a simple mappack

I'm a game purist.. I mean that I purely love the game. Anyone that complains about someone taking the time to "update" or "modify" a game that would otherwise have no community left is an idiot. I welcome any and all changes because everything is optional and allows me to replay the game once more. I love base Half-Life 2, and I love MMOD. In fact MMOD is an upgrade to Core Half-Life 2 in almost every way without changing what makes it great. Again, I'm a purist but welcome to options.. And I actually love SMOD as well. Take that, purists!
I think you’re right, especially when compared to some of valve’s other titles, HL2’s gunplay is...simplistic. I’m a modder myself, and I normally don’t go for conversion mods, but this one’s got my attention!

I love the animations of pulling the weapons out. It looks like gordon freeman have them strewn around his batman belt or something.
Even though I ran into a few issues with MMOD, namely some of the flame effects utterly tanking my frame rate (I dunno how to fix that, tbh) whenever I look at them, and fullbright being utterly annoying to deal with (but that's more of an issue with HL2 itself), I had a pretty good time with MMOD. Now, if only the lore unfriendly version would be released, so I can finally use an AKM in Half-Life, and toy with all of the new weapons there.

I was absolutely blown away by MMod. Annoying hud gliches aside its a spectacular experience that really made me love hl2 even more. My only real gripes are that the shotgun is abusurdly under powered now and that while smarter, combine NPC's are way too grenade happy in certain sections.

I think the best part is the AR2 animation, it feels so satisfying when shooting it now.
If i remember correctly this mod is good enough to even get people on Gmod to port it since the animations are so nicely made
Cinematic mod is my favorite mod I did not care that it should be pure half life 2 it can be different and I like that. And I love the aiming and kickbacks for guns cause it lets me do burst fire it helps greatly.

A nice options for aiming or zoom would be to give people a choice. Do you want ADS for all guns? Only zoom? or maybe no zoom at all. That would be a nice compromise, but of course it would take logner to make proper animations for all the guns

I have so longed for a HL2 mod that updates textures to be higher resolution and I hope with future updates this can be done! It would also be awesome if they could work in some of the beta enemies into the vanilla HL2 levels like the hydras and bullsquids in the canals, alien assassins and cremators in City 17, and combine assassins in Nova Prospect. I would *NUT* .
If you think Half Life 2's purists are bad, wait until you've seen Marathon's ones, which are arguably a lot worse. I once accidentally caused a flame war on the Marathon Story Page a few years ago because I had the nerve to simply state what I wanted to see in a Marathon 4 and/or modern full 3D remake of the original trilogy. Some even whine about using HD graphics mods, crosshairs and even mouse aiming, the first one of which was commonly done by some prick named MoppyPuppy who harassed Narcogen on Rampancy.net's Marathon let's play videos constantly, the Marathon equivalent of equally pathetic purist crybaby Joseph Collins trolling Andrew Hulshult just because he didn't like his style of music for Rise of the Triad 2013 much.

MMod looks stellar; even if it’s a few small changes, they make a big difference. Sorta reminds me of Black Mesa while still feeling like Half-Life 2.

Lever action rifle would be awesome to have in game.
First time I played hl2 I was hoping the gun he threw to you would be that.
