I did something like this last year, combine HL2 Update and MMod, along with a bunch of HD texture mods and HD model imports from Half-Life Alyx. It was an absolute blast to play and felt like an official HL2 remaster.
Radiation, you’re one of, if not my favorite TH-camr to this day. I love the content you put out. It keeps me in the HL/Valve loop and it’s super enjoyable to see new mods or games covered by you.

@@Vincent654 you can install maps only, without npcs and anything else, even delete all lewd posters and graffiti completly. Though, i had to repalce songs manually since Batman score doesn't fit well here (sometimes it works well, sometimes it's absolute miss, + game loses it's indentity in favor of Hollywood blockbuster)
Gunship Mark II actually has managed to escape Ukraine and is seeking asylum in either Canada or the US iirc he managed to snag his hard drives for the mods on the way out and he’s been hard at work on Half-Life 1 MMOD and his various Command And Conquer mods
I hope the author of MMOD is doing okay, having to leave your home and worse your country in a rush is never a good experience, Also I have to accept that I stopped playing HL2 since the Remaster project was announced by Filip Victor, I'm waiting until its release to replay HL2 just to enjoy it more y 'know.

I played MMod a bunch on launch so much so i got tired of it and went back to playing the game vanilla, i really got to appreciate how the vanilla game feels it may not be as satisfing as HL1 but HL2 just has this sense of polish i hadnt detected prior to mmod's release in a way i love mmod for that

Yeah, I can’t go back to Vanilla after playing MMOD. A really good balance of innovation and aesthetic cohesion. Honestly i’d recommend of your starting half life id go BLACK MESA - HL2 MMOD - Entropy Zero and then 2. It would probably be the most cohesive experience you could get.
ehhhhhhh, I wouldn't say that's cohesive, because Black Mesa is very different to Half Life 2 in terms of design. It definitely could be a cool Marathon to do when you're a fan, but you wouldn't appreciate the games as much without the original experience.
You should totally try the upscaled texture mod too, it really makes a big difference! I can't stop zooming in to random things and fawning over how crispy everything looks. It's compatible with MMod too.

Man i remember i enjoyed playing MMod back in the day but now that i tried it again i didn't really liked it that much, it felt like playing Black Mesa or those fps mods for Garry's Mod and idk, i just don't think it fits too good in the game.

A player can enjoy a good story and good level design for how long? 2 to 3 playthroughs? After that, you are only going to replay the game if you truly enjoy its gameplay
To any new players, it is now better to use original half-life 2 instead of update as the mod is older and there has been engine upgrades. So best is Half-life 2 (normal file)+MMod+a texture pack.

I would advise against playing HL2 Update or even recommend it! I had, when I wanted to play through HL2 with this mod, a reproducible crash of the game. Always at the same point. If such a serious bug has not been fixed in an 8-year-old mod, it allows conclusions to be drawn about how well the project is still maintained. Apart from that, the graphical / technical improvements are way too subtle even for 2015 and out of date since the early 2020s at the latest. I would, if you want to play exclusively with a refurbished version released and distributed by Valve, wait for the release of HL2: Remastered Collection. Whereby, it is unclear when this remaster will be released and what it will even offer. However, that's not a project I'm insanely looking forward to seeing released. Unlike the No VR mod for Half-Life: Alyx. Because finally playing something new and technically / graphically much more appealing in the HL universe, than HL2 over and over again, seems much more attractive to me! In the past, mods based on the HL2 engine satisfied my "hunger for more". Mods like Minerva, Research & Development or Entropy: Zero. But on the one hand, there are hardly any mod projects of this kind left, and on the other hand, you can see that even these projects are getting more and more technically dusty.
i also love the mod that changes the hev suit to the one seen in alex, that including the new weapon models makes it feel like a 2023 game to me, dont get me wrong the original is amazing but all these mods together are more fun to me on repeat playthroughs

My only criticism with this video is that HL2 Update is behind on updates compared to retail last I remembered, engine issues like missing ragdoll physics and blinking are just gone, and other behind the scenes fixes regarding the game
The recent update to MMod is called "More Iron Sights". That's what wins it over for me big time. I love aiming down the barrel in FPS's. It makes the game feel like a modern shooter but still Half Life 2, which is timeless now.
This is actually my preferred way to play the game too! Although sometimes I like to go back to vanilla just to experience the game the way it was intended. I plan on buying a retail copy of the game so I can play it how it was on launch.
MMod also has the true ironsight addon for all weapons, that was my main download reason on top of all the cool stuff _Gunship Mark II_ added. I discovered this mod two years ago and since then it's never vanilla again!
Maybe its just novelty, but as of now, HL2VR is my definitive way to play HL2. I really wish we could get HL2VR with MMod - the explosions and weapon effects are what I want most. Congrats on the channel! Sincerely, your 33rd subscriber
I found out you could play HL2VR with the Beta Aesthetics 3.0 mod. I’d say that’s probably my favourite way to play HL2. Now you can FEEL dark and gritty. Also, congrats on three years!
Not to hijack your spotlight, but I play HL2 in a similar fashion, but with a "realistic" weapon damage modifier and gun sound changes and is showcased on my channel. Really adds a lot of depth to the game.
Actually update is kinda outdated compared to vanilla hl2 surprisingly. Probably still adds a lot of features though. But its based on the older version of the game. I don't really use it anymore. Theres mappacks on gamebanana with fixes. Also you can add many custom models, textures, sounds, particles etc on top of mmod.
As cool as mmod is, I kinda almost prefer vanilla hl2 weapons in some cases. None of the weapons feel as punchy as the base hl2 ones except for the shotgun and pulse rifle. Update is just a straight upgrade to hl2 though.
I have a suggestion (it's optional): Try combining HL2MMod + HL2Project (the weapon pack) + Cinematic Mod + HLA Models. I never tried them myself but why don't you try it? I kinda wanna see the results. Also thanks for being awesome, Rad Dad (Rad Dad because you're a dad now lmao)

damn, I installed the mmod, project HL2 on top of it, remastered textures, decals, npc and prop replacements from HL:A... and you know what? It crashes like crazy all the time. So I think to my self, nah, better stick with the classic vanilla HL2.
Just finished half-life 2 VR Mod. I’ve heard that it supports mod, not sure if mmod or half-life update will work with it. But man if it could I’d definitely play it yet again.
If players want original but modern weapon animations i recommend mtb's reanimation pack (or you can put it on mmod, but for mmod i would recommend IIopn Works PROJECT: HL2 (reanimation pack) that adds half-life alyx's gordon arms too, so choose what you like)
To go trough this in hard mode, I had to go back to the big control room (When Alyx exit the vent), to transport the two turrets to this part, otherwise it was impossible 💀
I ended up cheesing it by bringing all the turrets from the previous defense section forward to that point. It was a royal pain in the ass but totally worth it.
MMOD is a 10/10 mod. It turns HL2 from a mediocre FPS to a god tier one. Getting rid of the hitscan and improving the sounds alone makes it so much more fun.
The weapon models were made by MMod's creator, Gunship Mark II. Not Juniez.

Combat was never the best part of the Half Life games. It's the level design and the unbroken narrative that makes the Half Life series so great.

I agree with you on this, but the long solo turret defence sequence in Nova Prospekt got unfairly impossible for me on Hard difficulty haha

I ended up cheesing it by bringing all the turrets from the previous defense section forward to that point. It was a royal pain in the ass but totally worth it.

MMOD is a 10/10 mod. It turns HL2 from a mediocre FPS to a god tier one. Getting rid of the hitscan and improving the sounds alone makes it so much more fun.
I love MMOD but can't stand the hitscan, makes the shotgun very weirdly inconsistent at point blank
my definitive half life 2 mod now is the VR one. It's crazy cool, right up to when you get to vehicle sections. Those are sadly very nauseating.
I prefer my half life 2 with mmod and update, but also with a few upscaled or redone textures and models from gamebanana and moddb

The thing about update is that it didn't receive the latest updates, I made a patch for it (half-life 2 re:update), however the new UI doesn't work.
The definitive way to play is HL2 VR (with update mods of course). It seems like the game was originally designed for VR
This + upscales texture pack. I wish there was something better for it but thats best we can get.

Hl2 VR is the definitive way IMHO, it's a different experience.
