I wish that more mode kept the pulse rifle’s classic animation of reloading one pellet at a time. Part of the futuristic appeal of the rifle to me was how all of those shots were contained in that one tiny vessel. It felt more alien and advanced. It feels more safe and familiar to have it work like any other belt fed machine gun.
Ar2 use the half life 2 beta incendiary rifle animation which only shot 1 round at a time so the reload animation only show rifle load 1 round(flare box) into chamber thinging but later valve change it to more like assault rifle but didnt change the animation
Think of it like this, when you run out of your pellet magazines, you quickly switch the magazine reserve for a new one (the "mag" in mmod being the actual mag reserve)@@kaibowman4803
Makes even more sense if you just think of the pickup as an actual magazine reserve for the pellet mags, hell even half life alyx confirms the ar2 working like that @@kaibowman4803
iirc the animation was going to be as shown, but didnt make it in time and so they shipped it as seen on release. I think what would make it futuristic was if those pellets weren't ejected, but kept in that box and the magazine was recharged instead of dumped or thrown
Both mods are really good. MMod is more like a enhanced modern of the classic HL2, not ging too far away from the roots, but improving in some aspects of the game, love it. Project HL2, I can see why the more aggressive approach of the way weapons behave, which is indeed realistic(not from my experience, I never used a weapon, but I do saw one in action IRL, doesn't looks like something easy to handle), not only improving the animations, but also adding improved models of the weapons and the HEV suit arms, I think I saw those models on gamebanana... Not totally sure, but it's really neat!
Project HL2 still have some jank. In the crossbow reload animation Gordon didn't pull the string first, he just slap the bar in and the string magically set to position by itself. Also the pistol inspect animation you can see the bullet stays in the chamber instead of following the rack when it's pulled. One other thing, it's subjective only for me but the SMG reload is way too fast. Both are good but i personally still choose MMod for it's more detailed animation, if they fixed Project HL2, it could maybe up to par with MMod
far as I remember, the crossbow in HL2 itself is supposed to be motorized to automatically pull the string back since it's not like the rebels have the servo assisted strength of the suit
0:39 - With this mod this is the FIRST time I've ever actually wanted to use the pistol after Route Kanal! Because it feels so much more badass, it just needed the sheen and to be bigger in the screen.
I really like mmod original animations and i would prefer to play with them, but man... that revolver on Project HL2... mmm, sheeeshh 🔥 I wish there was a mod that just gives you the model and animations of the revolver from Project HL2 on default mmod weapons
The weapon models for Project HL2 were made by Juniez, all of whose models exist as standalone addons for HL2 Mmod, and have for about 3 years. They're all on Gamebanana, so mix and match to see which ones you want to use or not.
I dunno man, I think MMod feels a little more thoughtful in what it improves and changes. The animation reflects Gordon's lack of proper firearm training, and the redesign of the MP7 makes the 2nd barrel sort of plausibly look like a grenade launcher. Although I do prefer how project HL2 leaves the stock on the MP7 collapsed, and also makes the holosight actually visible in ADS.
the pulse rifle still bugs me. It goes against the idea that the Combine are more advanced that us when they still use one bullet for one cartridge. Vanilla pulse rifle only used one cartridge for its entire magazine size indicating that the Combine has mastered weapons technology so much to the point that all they need is this tiny capsule to fire an mag's worth of projectiles.
That's because the original pusle rifle is a reused model from the cut beta content of a flare launcher. The original AR2 was an OICW, and used 5.56 stanag magazines.
Both have great models, but the Project HL2 models are WAY too exaggerated to the point where its distracting. Also, the error at 4:11 with the round not being pulled by the extractor when pulling the slide to inspect the chamber on the Project HL2 USP drives me up a fucking wall. The error in the Project HL2 revolver inspect animation (4:27) is annoying as well. The hammer is pulled all the way back, yet acts as if barely pulled back or at half-cock. That is not how it works. Both get the SPAS-12 reload wrong, but many games do so I'm willing to overlook that.
With the right context of Gordon fighting the combine, it makes sense why the animations are deranged, Gordon’s confused and panicking. He was basically brought to a whole nother world by the g man after he basically told Gordon to go f#ck himself. So in combat the more fast paced and deranged animations make more sense imo, but when he’s just shooting in the sky they feel over exaggerated because there is nothing happening for Gordon to be fast and panicked, but in combat it makes more sense and brings a little more life to Gordon I think
Maybe Gordon just doesn’t feel emotion, idk. Maybe mmod’s animations are more lore accurate to Gordon, but project hl2’s animations are more realistic to someone who has to take down an entire alien empire
I think its worth pointing out that Gordon Freeman is still an MIT graduate with no prior military experience at the end of the day. That still applies to Half Life 2, since from his perspective, only a singular day has passed since the Resonance Cascade in HL1 due to stasis.
