We’re Marianne & Chris, a happily married couple from the UK. Marianne is a living kidney donor to her best friend, and realising that life was for living and never really knowing what’s round the corner - we decided to fulfil our dream of travelling full time.
So in March 2018 after the kids had left home, we sold our belongings, rented our house and moved into our campervan called Trudy. We set off to see the world and after vanlifing around Ireland and Europe, we grabbed our backpacks and spent 5 months exploring Central America.
Feeling like we needed a challenge, we planned the ultimate van life adventure! In Jan 2020 set off to drive around the World from UK to UK. But after arriving in Turkey, covid caught up with us and closed the borders, so we had a wonderful 18 months exploring this special country. Realising we were not going to be able to head further East, we decided to do a handbrake turn and go the other way and shipped our van to the USA.
We hope you enjoy coming with us, and we’ll continue to share our real adventures and hope you feel inspire to step out of your comfort zone and try something new.

Totally unacceptable especially when you have paid for a service. So disappointed for you it must be devastating, things can be replaced but it's not the point . They must know who's job it was to check and sign off the van . The person who had access with the keys must take responsibility especially if your van hasn't been broken into . So very sad for you both .
I actually heard other van lifers who did this - had been robbed!
Commenting from Canada. Most service stations have diesel, although it may be in a separate pump and you just have to move up another 6 - 7 feet or so. Someone in the comments mentioned Cracker Barrel as a place to park overnight. It’s also a great place to stop and have a bite to eat if you’re really hungry. A bit of an experience all on its own. I wish we had them in Canada. By the way, I’ve really enjoyed your Turkey series. You were really fortunate to be “stuck” in such an amazing country
Thanks for the tip - yep we love Turkey and feel really lucky to have a new family there - we will be back there for a quick visit (plans going on in the background to continue the work at the turtle conservation centre!) M
I should add...I like the food at Cracker Barrel but the coffee, not so much! I have eaten at a number of different Cracker Barrel’s and I have yet to find one that can provide you with a decent cup of coffee...unless you like insipid coffee.
Totally unacceptable! Marianne & Chris you must get in contact with the shipping company!! At the end of the day it's there responsibility to make sure Trudy get there in one peace and everything should be as you left it! Take care of yourself!
Hi Gregory - yep they will only insure Trudy - not the contents - this is standard I am afraid ... but we have moved on and will rebuild !! 🌷

I was worried that some of your things would disappear but at least the expensive stuff in the lock box was okay. I like how Ersel commented that he has new hubcaps waiting for you in Turkey when you get back......such a nice human being! Okay, now, off to new adventures. I'm so sorry this has happened to you guys. It was one of my fears: when you entrust not just your vehicle but also your home to others, it's so upsetting when this trust is abused. Fingers-crossed you have everything you need, and can replace everything that's missing.

As others have said I would definitely report this to the authorities. The offenders will be relying on people not bothering to report these things going missing, so will continue to get away with it. Looking forward to following your new adventures 😁
It’s happened to us as well and there’s precious little you can accomplish afterwards (we tried) everyone points the finger at each other - we got nowhere with our complaints etc - you realize it’s a dirty little secret of the industry.
Yeah, foreigners tend not to report it because of fear of maybe rocking the boat that may affect their visit. I agree, they should file a complaint. That's why it's important to film before and after and check the vehicle before leaving port.
In spite of the discouraging theft, you guys proved marvelously resilient. I love your delight in new destinations and foods. And the way you share the details of your travels. Also, the behind-the-scenes work and skill involved in filming and editing each new episode. Looking forward to further videos of your American tour.
It’s just wonderful knowing you’re here, great to hear your voices. I think back billing the shipping company is in order. A little low power security camera would be a great invention with an app like ring doorbells, so if anyone enters your van/home, it sends you their picture or video. Van lifers, start inventing! Love you bunches!
Chris and Marianne were just as happy as the kids because they got Trudie back together. What a beautiful reunion. Every item has a place. Everyone in their place, please.

It's so upsetting what has happened to you both. I hope the rest of your trip to America goes better. If you come to Tampa Florida you have a place to stay at our home. My wife and I can show you around Tampa. You can try a famous cuban sandwich or a deviled crab. If you like amusement parks we can take you to Busch Gardens. Have a great time traveling America ! Disgusting that you guys have had this happen to Trudy.. there must be some way of finding out who checked her over & signed it off.. this has probably happened before to other people.. this needs addressing. Don’t let it annoy you but don’t let it pass either.

Welcome to America, I'm sorry for your stolen things.
As a ex New Yorker One thing I'm sure of USA is not Europe or Turkey that you can travel everywhere you want.
Everything you’re mentioning stolen are things crew members on a ship would find useful. Grooming supplies, fans, clothing, shoes, etc. File a complaint with the shipping agent.
Yes I agree put in a complaint and a claim against the shipping company and/or agent, they are not allowed to take your stuff it’s theft, I would get legal advice to see if there are grounds for a private prosecution
Those crew that work on those ships spend months if not years at a time on them. Very little pay. I feel sorry for them but it's sad you got robbed.

Love seeing you discover all the differences in the US. Green for diesel still gets me 20 years in! Stay weather aware-have a shelter in mind when tornadoes are threatened, toilet blocks at campsites. Have fun 🤩

So glad Trudy made in one piece. When we shipped our van to Italy, we were robbed as well... 1 hub cap....kids cassette tapes, our air filters etc...very demoralizing.

I am so sorry you had to go through such a negative mess. Yet you both keep such a positive attitude! I am feeling your pain as I watch you drive around looking for propane. Tractor Supply and Uhaul didn't service on board tanks so I ended up at Campers Inn (much much smaller than Camper's World). I'm camping with full hook ups this week in my 25 foot Winnebago - luxurious compared to sweet little Trudy. But I have several boondocking (no hook up spots) I need to be ready for in the next few weeks. Chris really made me laugh . . . "look at the size of those caravans!! Look! Even the sides pop out." I'm dwarfed by my huge travel trailer and fifth wheel neighbors. Marianne would love the huge trucks they have to tow them with. Thank you so much for taking us along for your adventures. So sorry your van got trashed. I've heard it's common when you ship. I saw some van-lifers do a very successful anti-theft thing to their van when they had it shipped (Snow & Curt). They actually had a temporary wooden wall built between their cab and the back and they put special locks on the slide and back doors and it worked. Yeah, those guys probably used your van as a hideaway when they wanted to take breaks on ship - feels yukky. So glad you were able to get her organized and on the road again though. I saw one couple got their promaster in a container for the trip by ship from Panama to Columbia. They had to take fan out and mirrors off, but got it in. Who was That? Anybody remember?

Look up ‘Ray Taylor StingRay alarm system’. He’s in Wolverhampton. An electrician whose van was robbed, he’s made an alarm that gives an electric shock to anyone trying to open the van. I’d fit one and not tell anyone. The voltage still works through rubber gloves, he made sure of that.

My husband and I met these lovely people in Anchorage. Really nice people and full of invaluable information for traveling in a van. We left Alabama in May for our first extended trip. We are 4 weeks into a 10 week trip.

Yeah this is eerily familiar. I’m an expat Brit in Missouri and we imported some Austin Mini’s over and time and again, stuff was stolen from them while on the ship. The bizarre thing is there is NO RECOURSE whatsoever!! No one has a clue what to do about it so I remember telling them I’d like a job with them as it would be great to be able to just pilfer stuff and never get fired !!

Sorry about the theft of your van, not a very good welcome to the USA. Here's an idea, for missing kitchen items shop at some of the Salvation Army Stores, Goodwill or Thrift stores along the way. On weekends some communities have Garage Sales, and great finds are always available. For new cheap items try the Dollar Store, Dollar Tree & then Walmart. Stay Safe.
I am not really expert but I believe you can stay 1 night or 2 in most Walmart parking lots and also some other big shopping places. I hope see see you Houston and please visit in Buckeese gas station it’s massive in Texas. Safe travels 🇹🇷 🇺🇸

some things probably were for sure stolen but it seems more like they just literally tore everything out of her & didn't care enough to put it all back let alone in place or reorganized. so many arbitrary things they'd have almost no use for, they probably just threw some stuff aside & tossed it when they realized it hadn't been put back. sorry, I hate the feeling of personal things being touched & looked through. thanks for your work, stay safe.
also, if the station has diesel you will see the price reflected on the sign. the diesel pumps are usually on the end caps and, as you have discovered, green.
Ah that sucks the van was ransacked, the rest of your trip can only get better.

Diesel is ALWAYS green. If you don't see green at the pumps, they don't have diesel.

So sorry to hear this Chris & Marianne. So maybe next time make a full list of everything in & on Trudie & take photos of everything. Stick a copy of list or a notice inside Trudie stating you have a complete list & photos of everything. You could then go to customs for a "please explain" if anything on future is taken. If insurance was included in all the fees you paid you should be able to claim?? Trust you will carry on in your usual cheery positive way. Have a blast, live the USA, i lived there for 2 yrs & another time some road trips. God bless you and your travels.

We have a 34 foot Travel Trailer. It’s big. We have it parked at a RV resort. So much easier that moving it all the time. We are not ready to retire although we definitely should.
