Yes, tipping is normal here in the states. The reason for tipping is to compensate the wait staff on the service they provide based upon their quality delivered. Waitstaff do not earn the National minimum wage and tips are how they make most of their income to offset the reduced wage they earn hourly.
Hi Thank you so much for sharing that information with me - can you tell me why they do not get the minimum wage (is this not a legal requirement) Chris and I used to own a restaurant and this is very curious to us - Kind regards Marianne
@@TREADtheglobe the federal minimum wage is set at like $2.35 per hour for wait staff. This is due to the quirkiness of our legal system and the ability for industries to lobby our government for laws that benefit them. The justification for this lower minimum wage is that they “receive tips to offset the difference”… however, this is also the reason why there are so many unfilled wait staff openings in the US… the policy is archaic and needs to be addressed. dear Marienne and Chris! so nice to see you guys keeping up with your journey. You have been a part of the family and we miss your smiling faces if we dont hear from you for a couple of days :) Your visiting the oldest city in the USA made us laugh a lot. Welcome to the United States! I've enjoyed watching your travels over the passed months and I'm exited to have you touring through our country. You will find as you tour through different parts of the US, that life, expectations and customs will vary as much as they do when you travel through Europe. I'm 75 years old and can say that I've never been "asked" if I was leaving a tip. It is expected, but I would be just as shocked as you if someone actually asked me. Remember that you are traveling through huge cities now that rely on tourist dollars.. I hope you take the time to stop and enjoy what we lovingly call "small town America" as well. It's not as exciting possibly but life moves a little slower and not quite as crowded. May God bless you with safe travels, few emergencies, and many beautiful park ups! 🙂

Loving this trip so far. It takes some getting used to when you need to tip everyone. Unfortunately in the USA wages aren't regulated so tips are part of the wage, it's standard practice. Mind you, that food was expensive, so there's no excuse not to pay staff a decent wage at that price! Safe journey onwards
congratulations on the award! Fabulous to get that recognition here in Turkey! 👏🏻🇹🇷 Re the tipping: In 18 years of living in the US (Oregon) and traveling around a lot, we were never asked for tips! Tipping is definitely usual, and having had kids who worked in restaurants we knew the importance of them, but no one has ever asked for one! ❤️

Tipping is very important in the US seeing as how wait staff make about $2 an hour. So their salary depends on how satisfied you are with his/her service. You should always add 20% to your meal for your tip, if you are satisfied.
You can dump your waste inside the restrooms at the rest stops. Check out Sanibel Island Causeway, where you can spend the day at the beach in Lee Co. in the Fort Myers area.
We drove from memphis to NYC a few years back... Our detour was to Waltons Mountain.. Not much there, a museum, shop and the actual Waltons house (not the one from the TV show) Glad we went though, one of those things you may never do again
Congrats on the award 😀👍 love watching you guys can’t wait till we have finished our van and heading straight for turkey after watching you guys. America might be a bit far to start with but never say never 😀
They had to change the name to the “oldest continuously inhabited city in the Americas” and I believe you’ll find that it’s been under 5 different flags I think. I love it! It’s so interesting to hear the US described by you two after having followed so much of your Turkish trip!! I am in Mexico now, and you’re making me homesick!!
The following is taken from the Sky City web page; The Acoma Pueblo village known as Sky City sits atop a 376 foot tall mesa surrounded by a surreal landscape of soaring buttes, rock pinnacles and piles of gigantic boulders. Occupied since at least 1150, possibly as early as 900, it may be the oldest continuously inhabited community in North America. The only way to visit the ancient village is on a tour operated by the Sky City Visitor Center, which is located at the base of the mesa.
@@coloradoridgerunner791 🤷♀️lol. That’s very cool though. Even as far as St. Augustine goes, they cannot have been considering the natives otherwise they could never have made that statement even then.
Thanks for taking us with you around St. Augustine. At 15:29, those cannons have been left out in the sun, and need to be put in the fridge, in case they go off 😆 Hope you manage to get that gear stick fixed. I feel your pain regarding that. I once had the whole gear stick come off in my hand, during my first job. It was the boss’s car, and he’d lent it to me to deliver something to a client. I managed to jam the stick back in, to complete my journey back to the office, then the stick came off again for good in the company car park. When I handed the boss back the keys, I also gave him the gear stick. He had quite a sense of humour, so we both fell about laughing!
What a lovely quaint little church ! Oh no what a disaster Trudy is Knobless 😂😂. Absolute amazing news winning the award 👏👏👏👏long live the 🐢 🐢. Well done Chris adding a wee bit of food in as always 😋❤️
I'm just catching up with the news re Tornados in the southern states and sincerely hope you are staying safe. I haven't watched this video yet. Love watching what you are both doing - keep trucking
Yes , we worry about you during tornado season. If there is one, maybe you can find an underground car park and stay put. Better safe than sorry. If you're driving along a freeway and a tornado is about to hit , stop and park under an overpass (bridge). There are lots of them , especially at freeway exits.
Hi Deborah xx we are all ok - and will share info as we go - and i will post on Instagram / facebook / twitter and newsletter if anything happens - the videos are only a week behind 🌷🌺🙌
The Pueblo of Acoma's “Sky City” located on the Acoma Pueblo, in New Mexico is the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in North America. It is located West of Albuquerque New Mexico off I-40 at the Sky City Casino and RV Campground exit. It is well worth a visit you will not find another site like it anywhere in the Americas. The Acoma people are wonderful and their visitors center has beautiful handmade pottery, jewelry, and paintings made by members of the pueblo.
Have been RVing since 1975 never saw anyone dump their portable toilet into a hose like you just did🤣 Why didn't you just disconnect the large sewer hose at the point where is connected to sewer dump like most people would instead of trying to dump your unit into the hose?
Hello! Looks like you are really enjoying your trip, love your videos. I wasn’t sure if you knew you can dump your cassette in any public restroom. I have a large plastic tote from IKEA that I put ours in to take in and dump in a toilet. The rest areas on the interstate are perfect for this. Take a bottle of water in with you to give it a good rinse and you’re ready to go!
You guys should look at getting a natureshead composting loo while you’re there. We imported one from the States for our van and we love it. Loving your trip so far!
Gerçekten çok güzel bir şehirmiş, çok yüksek katlı binaların olduğu şehirleri sevmiyorum, videoyu zevkle izledim, teşekkürler Marianne ve Chris. 👍👍👍👍🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷👍👍👍👍
We’ve been travelling to the USA regularly for 30 years it is standard practice to leave a tip of 15% / 20%, you need to factor that and sales tax into your calculations when intending to make a purchase.
'The Americanizer' can be used to convert between cassette toilets and US dump stations. Re tips, they are pretty much mandatory here, 15% min 18-20% if feeling generous.
Well done raiseing the money. And get an award. We are in Turkey absolutely love it here we met a guy called Alan last week who told us about the work you have done. America we have travelled it's amazing.went to St Augustus too a beautiful place with the oldest wooden school. Al as o
This roadtrip is turning into one helluva trip! Wow, what else has Trudes suffered at the hands of those reprobates?! On another note, please tell us you're going to NOLA!!! You'll love it!
It begs the question to our American cousins, why are the employers not paying their staff, at least minimum? Why are customers expected to subsidise the restaurant owner? What is the point of having a minimum wage, if it is not compulsory?
As an American, I've never understood why waiters and waitresses don't get minimum wage. My sister has been a waitress many years and recently I learned about them not getting minimum wage.
@darkwood777, I understand that, but that is not the point I was making. Waitstaff wages should not be at the whim of the customer, or the customer's responsibility.
@@terrythomas3755Agreed! Some restaurants even make the waitstaff pool their tips so they can be distributed evenly amongst the whole waitstaff. It seems to me, the whole tip system can cause a lot of animosity amongst co-workers. And it could all be avoided if everyone was just paid one straight, legal wage. I am an American and I used to work for a coffee shop quite long ago. We would count the tip jar at the end of the evening and equally distribute the cash so we wouldn’t have to report it in our tax returns. I’m sure that did not last long. Having worked for tips myself, I now tip generously because I know what it is like on the other side. There are some great things about the USA, but there’s some really crappy things too. Regardless, I am still grateful to be living here. (I live in South Florida)
Aaahhh, ST Augustine! Haven’t been there in a while. There use to be a restaurant called “The Columbia”. It had the BEST Sunday Brunch I’ve ever had! Also the fort has a ghostly guard(if you believe in that sort of thing) which patrols the fort carrying a lamp at night. The light house is supposed to be haunted as well. Marineland FL, just south of St Augustine, was the first marine park in the USA. Doesn’t put on shows anymore but is now a dolphin research center. It’s worth a look and you can swim with the animals. It was one of the sites used while filming “The Creature from the Black Lagoon”. A 1950’s horror movie…..Was stationed in Turkey, Balikesir, back in 1991-93 while in the US Air Force. Best assignment I ever had. Cheers

Ugh that custom people! 🤦 I love how Turkish people continue to extend their hospitality even abroad and give you food. 😄 Congratulations on the award by the way. You deserve it. To be honest, St. Augustine looks like the first interesting place in America. After Turkey, America is just too new of a settlement to offer much but you guys make anything fun to watch. Even dumping your pee. 🤣

Hi both, another great video and adventure series. We started watching you back in the early lockdown days at the car park and have rarely missed a video since. We wanted to thank you as your Turkey series has really made us think and we are currently planning taking our motorhome over there to tour the wonderful country for an extended stay. I wonder if you could advise on the shipping costs and timescales to get Trudy back as we are considering shipping our motorhome out and also if you have any contacts or recommendations. Many thanks and hope you enjoy your new adventure across the pond.
Hi - fabulous !! Yes in the community page I have posted the name of the shipping company that we used - Auto Cars Ltd - but if you can't find it - DM me and I will send them over 👍
Just found you guys through Mr and Mrs Adventure. So I don't know much about you but I find your Turkish turtle sanctuary amazing! I'm just wondering if people are asking you if you're going to leave a tip because you are not leaving a tip. Food workers make very, very little and rely on tips. Most servers make around $2 - $3 an hour or so. I'm sure I'm not the only one to tell you. Standard is 15%, 20% if it was good service. And a dollar a drink for the bartender is standard now. Welcome to the States.
Welcome aboard! Thank you for the info - We are learning fast about tipping - we had no idea that restaurant staff are not paid the minimum wage ... it was a shocker !! But we know now and do 'our' bit 🌷🙌
Wow, you missed st Simmons island and the half shell restaurant. And the turtle rescue on the island next to st simons. Hope New Orleans and that amazing creole food is on your list. So nice to see you out and about.
Hi Norma - we have met RV and Van lifers here that have told us after 20+ years of touring the USA they have not seen everything ..... we are going to be missing a lot more !!
@@TREADtheglobe then you’ll just have to come back at some point, what an impressive Lifetime of memories to cherish even if you miss a few. Just warm n fuzzy knowing you are here.
Only tip waiters who wait on you at restaurants and delivery people (food deliveries). Don't worry about tipping clerks at the cash register (at coffee shops, restaurants, etc).
Try to take I-10 West to Gainesville and see the University of Florida. I'm sure there are a handful of students who are followers and would love to meet the two of you. And yes, everyone wants a tip in the US, often between 15-20%.
Hi both, I love your videos and adventures and you have inspired me to visit Georgia as I really like the culture (and music there). One question: you have imported a European van (Trudy) to the US. Are spare parts readily available? I mean, god forbid, say the water pump goes, can you easily get a replacement? Good luck and keep posting about your amazing travels.
Go for it Georgia is a fabulous country !! We carry a few spares but will have to order / ship parts if we need them - the joys of being an overland explorer !! LOL

We drove from memphis to NYC a few years back... Our detour was to Waltons Mountain.. Not much there, a museum, shop and the actual Waltons house (not the one from the TV show)
Glad we went though, one of those things you may never do again
Congrats on the award 😀👍 love watching you guys can’t wait till we have finished our van and heading straight for turkey after watching you guys. America might be a bit far to start with but never say never 😀
Welcome to Winter/Spring in the American South!
The following is taken from the Sky City web page;
The Acoma Pueblo village known as Sky City sits atop a 376 foot tall mesa surrounded by a surreal landscape of soaring buttes, rock pinnacles and piles of gigantic boulders.
I am a South African in the US and after being here 6 years I still can't get over the tip thing here haha
OH my goodness !! the whole stick !!! Wow - that would have been quite a tricky one !!
Hope you got to see the Pirate museum. St Augustine has a quite colorful history with several famous pirates including Edward Teach aka Black Beard
I'm in Kansas ya'll come get me and let me go with you!!! Lol Ya'll are a hoot. I love watching your videos. Safe travels and God bless from KS USA!!
What a lovely quaint little church ! Oh no what a disaster Trudy is Knobless 😂😂. Absolute amazing news winning the award 👏👏👏👏long live the 🐢 🐢. Well done Chris adding a wee bit of food in as always 😋❤️
LOL !! I can honestly say I never thought that was going to be the thing that fell off Trudy first !! LOL M xx
Namaste from india .. 👍👍👍
I like van life very much .It's nice way to explore the world.
#Vanlife ❤️❤️
So glad you did st. Augustine! Figured out the newsletter to stay up to date, so thanks for the info 😁
Safe travels beautiful beings
Wonderful !
Thank you for the tip - we are coming !!
Living the dream man living the dream. Blessings and love to you all 🙏
Have been RVing since 1975 never saw anyone dump their portable toilet into a hose like you just did🤣
Why didn't you just disconnect the large sewer hose at the point where is connected to sewer dump like most people would instead of trying to dump your unit into the hose?
And where are your gloves?!! We always wear gloves bc it does sometimes gets on our hands, plus it’s just gross to touch the tubes💩
LOL !! we are certainly learning - but I suppose if you don't know - you don't know !! We will check it out and see if we can work it out next time 😂👍
@@sarahcalarco7227 I never use gloves. The gloves get contaminated. Soap and water works very well.
@@jimderksen1653 The gloves would be for shielding your hands from coming in contact with the waste at all. Just wash the gloves after every dump.
@@Northanteus I wash my hands…..same thing.
Thanks for the tips!
Great videos loving the American trip. The places your visiting look amazing. Nice to see you in Trudy again making great quality videos
Thank you! 😃
You guys should look at getting a natureshead composting loo while you’re there. We imported one from the States for our van and we love it. Loving your trip so far!
Thanks for the tip
Wonderful Video Guys👌. I Never heard of St.Agustine, So once again I am So thrilled to be following along on this Wonderful Adventure. Cheers.☘🤗🤗

Gerçekten çok güzel bir şehirmiş, çok yüksek katlı binaların olduğu şehirleri sevmiyorum, videoyu zevkle izledim, teşekkürler Marianne ve Chris. 👍👍👍👍🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷👍👍👍👍
Thank you - I have just done the subtitles for the next video and it is lovely nature !
Concerning tips. More for good service, less for bad service.
Well done raiseing the money. And get an award. We are in Turkey absolutely love it here we met a guy called Alan last week who told us about the work you have done. America we have travelled it's amazing.went to St Augustus too a beautiful place with the oldest wooden school. Al as o
Also we went to Savannah in Georgia. which is beautiful and sat on the seat where Forrest gump sat.. in the film.
Awh that is great - yes all of the amazing volunteers are wonderful and this project is growing so fast - People power at its very best !! M 🐢💜🌺
This roadtrip is turning into one helluva trip! Wow, what else has Trudes suffered at the hands of those reprobates?! On another note, please tell us you're going to NOLA!!! You'll love it!
Hi - we are heading there tomorrow !!
Awesome!!! Have a fantastic time! (I mean, it's NOLA, you can't not have a good time!) 😂
thanks so much marianne and chris this is very best vlog good day best life god bless you nice family 🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍
Thank you 🙌🙌
Loving your vids. R you passing are 51, and keep your eyes out for them ufo s. Be save .
It's strange they have the stinky slinky at the dump station. We also have a cassette toilet and have never encountered that before.
Cheers
Chrıs you should have said your sermon!! and to the idiots at customs: Marianne expert driver doesn’t need the end of the gearstick she’s the best driver. Seriously you guys need to touch base with the shipping company. St Augustine is a lovely quaint little town with Spanish vibes xxx and congratulations on the award - so proud to have donated xxx turtles 🐢 rule
Thank you too for your turtle support !!
I’m actually from Ocala Florida we kept my fathers boat in St Augustine for several years absolutely gorgeous there. If you are coming through Kentucky please let me know would be honored to host you guys. My husband and I are retired military and avid campers as well. Kentucky is absolutely gorgeous lots to do even have camping world ;)
Awesome !!
We have never been asked for a tip….!!!! Weird! Oh BTW, we saw you folks while you were filming in Kaş Enjoy your trip.
Hi !! We have since found out that waiting staff are not given minimum wage ?? We are still trying to understand why 🙄. Say Hi to Kas for us !!
Ugh that custom people! 🤦
I love how Turkish people continue to extend their hospitality even abroad and give you food. 😄 Congratulations on the award by the way. You deserve it.
To be honest, St. Augustine looks like the first interesting place in America. After Turkey, America is just too new of a settlement to offer much but you guys make anything fun to watch. Even dumping your pee. 🤣
Thank you 🐢👍

BEST TH-camRS, WELCOME TO AMERICA 🙏
Ahhh THANK YOU so much xx
@@TREADtheglobe Tips are welcome in the states, because servers here only pretty much make a living on them + gasoline money from the restaurant. Always enjoy watching you!

Enjoying the ride and tourist stops along the way. I havent been a subscriber long enough to now about your award- so I will check back a fee videos to see if I can be better informed. I'm sure you'll have fixed the gear poke by now. Happy and safe travels. 👍 🤩 🇳🇿 🙋♀️ 🇳🇱

Put vinegar in the cassette to eliminate odor. 😊
Thanks for the tip
Welcome to my state Florida!!! Enjoy your stay
Thank you! Will do!
Just disconnect the hose next time or find a public toilet and dump straight in. Tip for Alaska...don't eat yellow snow.
@@TREADtheglobe then you’ll just have to come back at some point, what an impressive
Lifetime of memories to cherish even if you miss a few. Just warm n fuzzy knowing you are here.
Gloves Chris, gloves!
Did you see the cannon balls in the walls in St Augustine?
Only tip waiters who wait on you at restaurants and delivery people (food deliveries). Don't worry about tipping clerks at the cash register (at coffee shops, restaurants, etc).
I’m from the west side of Florida, Gulf coast in Venice area!
LOL
Hi Guys, we are new viewers (found you while looking for USA vlogs) and are already subscribed and loving your videos. We fly out to Florida on Sunday for a couple weeks and are going to be doing a little driving around. Just wanted to make the offer of bringing out anything you might need for the van (service parts, etc) as we have plenty of luggage allowance, I’m a Peugeot/Citroen mechanic so know my way around the hdi Diesel engine. Keep up the videos!
Awesome! Thank you! - We have just arrived in the pan handle of Florida and leaving tomorrow to go to New Orleans ... but that is just lovely of you to offer and if you decide to stay in the USA - we always could do with a resident mechanic LOL 😂🙏🙌🚐🌷
Nothing inferior about Trudy she is a awesome lady
Hell Yeah !! Woo hoo
l love all your videos, you are the best, thamk you
You should have taken the other end out of the hole and one hold the cap open while the other dumped the tank. Lol
