Thank you. Partial grouping is not a crime, it's a disease, and people who suffer from it deserve dignity and compassion.

I think Paste in Place would have been a faster option for the 3rd example. Open the Group, create a group with the geometry you want. Cut the Grouped Geometry that you want from the lower Group. Close the lower Group and "Paste in Place" the Grouped Geometry you were after. It will be pasted in the same geographical location but outside the lower Group.
    Hopefully, that makes sense.
I find Paste in Place to be one of the most useful commands I know.

Thanks Aaron, I’ve never run into this but nice to have a solution. I wouldn’t call my self an over grouper but I do group just about everything ( or components) as I’m making the part/parts/assembly. I think it comes from my working with Inventor.
    Be safe

This was very helpful to me. Thanks!

Darn it ! I just spent ages yesterday moving groups out into the open, taking them apart, regrouping them (properly) and moving them back into place. These techniques would have saved me hours.

Sorry... I will try to post a few hours earlier next time 😉

Overgrouping is the way to go. I even group lines or curves that I don't want to interfere with the rest of the model until later on, then it's as easy as explode (and pray that the geometry doesn't get all messed up, specially with small polygons). Same as Sketchup is awesome with its grouping and... componenting :D capabilities (seriously, the power of components is amazing), it's a complete pain working with solids or very small geometry

I'm new to Sketch Up, this video is great. Thanks Aron

Hi Aaron, great presentations well delivered! I am fairly new to S U and I try to replicate all the basic models you make with good results. However in this presentation I have been unable to produce the triangular chamfers on the conical cylinder between the straight cylinder and the hexagonal tower with the tube on top, all of which I managed. So how did you make the triangular chamfers on the conical cylinder please. Bill Ferrol UK

REQUEST: Could you show us how to add new material(s) to the default set built into Sketchup please? ie. adding additional Wood textures to the "Wood" group. Especially, can they be added en-masse?

Aaron or anyone, I have a non relative question. Tried in the forums to no avail. How do you make Leaders in layout without text? All I want is to draw a leader, no text. I know I can do it with the line tool. But I’m talking about using the leader tool alongside the text tool.

    • @tanyaforrest5862
      @tanyaforrest5862 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Douglas, you can right click on the label after placing it and explode it and delete the text box leaving just the leader.

@@tanyaforrest5862 thanks, I’ll try that again but I thought I had tried it and it deletes the components name etc., and the words Label Text appears. I’ll try tomorrow when I get back to my computer. Thanks again and stay safe

Hey Aaron, partial grouping happens to me all the time, I blame my old eyes 😊

At least you have an excuse... I’ve been doing this since I start using SketchUp!

How would you go about modeling a basket light? Palecek has many basket pendant lights that I'm interested in modeling. I've seen a few on the warehouse, but they're applied images and they don't seem to render in vray well. Would it be possible to create a model of a woven and/ or basket pendant? I'm somewhat intermediate in SketchUp, but not sure how to best tackle this dilemma. I would really appreciate any tips on how to create this kind of model. Here is an example of a Palecek light, though there are many others on their site www.palecek.com/products/205279/L/03/AUGUSTINE-OUTDOOR-PENDANT-SPHERE. Thank you!

    I’m a classic partial-grouper 😂. I usually just give up, delete, start over 😂

Well... I don’t want to tell you not to do what you are comfortable with... but now you have the option to fix it!

Pretty rare that I am a partial grouper, over grouper ya. I would go with the select geometry and then cut and paste in place. Speaking of over grouping, I am having problems with hiding. If I am in a group with in a group and then hide it, then come out of the groups and then unhide all doesn't work. You have to go into the group and then unhide. Not very intuitive or correct. Maybe some tutorials on groups within groups, within groups and then add how to control visibility with layers for groups within groups.

Not only safe but a perfect way to dip a toe into the world of 3D design.
If you like it you can leap right in and explore the amazing extendable Sketchup world. If not, you can get your school project done and move on!

This has never happened to me. It's all or nothing. On a side note...I never know when to make it a group or when to make it component. I usually just hit g, give it a name and move on.
