    I remember back in the late 1980's, the bluff was eroding away, and these houses were in danger of collapsing. There was previously a street that ran along in front of the houses (where the bluff walk is now), but in front of these houses, the street had completely collapsed and part of their front yards had also collapsed. I was so happy a few years later when I went back and saw that the corps of engineers had rebuilt the bluff and saved the houses.

    I love Riverside! I was a guest at this home many many times. The house is gorgeous but the proprietor was one of a kind. Durell and I became friends over the years and we shared a birthday, same day different years. He kept the conversation going every. morning over breakfast with his unforgettable stories of his life in the south. I have stayed in every room in this house and enjoyed every visit there. He would make your dinner reservations and upon returning after dinner he had turned down your bed and placed fresh flowers and a pitcher of iced water on the nightstand. The lights were also dimmed. Upon awaking in the morning there was a silver service tray outside your door with coffee, creamer, and sugars. Prior to going out for dinner your would sit on the balcony on the second floor and he would serve wine which he referred to as the "eternal spring" and nibbles which was a combination of nuts, pretzels, and other crunchy yummies. You were free to roam around the home at your leisure but he would give a detailed tour of the home after breakfast if you chose to attend. This place will always hold a special place in my heart as well as Durell and the memories I will always have. I miss you and Riverside Durell. Thanks for the memories!

      I agree with you about the years that houses built now will never last as long as these houses have I love ❤️ Victorian style homes they have so much woodworking in them from the real fireplace to the kitchen and furniture and floors and doors and chandeliers they are beautiful and unique and usually they have antique furniture inside them and sometimes they allow you to purchase the antique furniture I think that adds to the buy because it makes the home stay looking more original 💡💯😇🇺🇸✡️✝️🌍🙏👍☮️👏❤️👼🥰🥇these unique homes are beautiful and a rare jewel 💎 those who get to own one are truly blessed because they own a iconic piece of history

    What a lovely place! While I love the dark carved wood and pocket doors of homes that started life as Victorians, the simplicity and open airy feel of the Greek Revival arches and columns just feels right for the location. It provides an 'open floor plan', while keeping a bit of mystery, because you must still wait to see what's around each corner. I'm curious about the narrow main staircase. At first I thought the house might be from the 1830s, before the giant hoop skirts, but if it was added in 1903, then it's likely that was what the existing space would allow. We have ocean & harbor views here (not from my house, of course), but no grand pristine rivers; it reminds me of the miles of the Potomac you can see from the bluff behind Mount Vernon. Hope y'all are keeping cool! :)

    Beautiful house. I kept wondering how this survived the Civil War. If it was built in 1858, it would have quickly been sitting in the middle of battles which makes me think about how it faired. Looks like this house and it's neighbors didn't suffer much at all. Oh, I just remembered you said the second floor wasn't added until 35 years later, which means it didn't have the glory as it looks now. Answered my own question! 😐🙄😄

    • @EddieRobertsRiverGypsy
      @EddieRobertsRiverGypsy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. No resistance from the Confederates when the Union came downriver so they didn't burn Natchez. If I recall correctly one cannon ball went through the kitchen window of Fort Rosalie and I think that was all.
      The dark part is the slaves were free. No place to live and no food nor medical care. Devil's Punchbowl, a deep hollow north of Natchez became a "concentration camp" so to speak.
      The Union soldiers rounded up the free slaves that were just wandering the streets and took them there. 10,000+ died in that hell hole and they are buried there; unmarked.
      As teenagers we used ropes to get down into the deep hollow; very eerie place. Posted now..... Lots of dark history here. I been here 50+ years. I work on the river as a crewboat Capt.
      I explore a lot.... Many have left this area. Many homes on the bluff are boarded up and for sell.
