- The Vaile Mansion in Independence, Missouri, is a gem of an historic site with an impressive history. In this video tour, our volunteers take you through the home's most interesting rooms, pointing out details along the way and telling the story of Harvey and Sophia Vaile. Not sure , but I do know Victorians loved cherubs and Grecian goddesses. I think they were fascinated with Greek and Roman myths in that time period. There are a lot of Victorian houses with Grecian aspects like the plaques around the lights. You guys should watch “ The Second Empire Strikes Back “. It’s a couple from St Louis Missouri “ fixing up a second empire mansion. The guy is incredibly talented and doing it all himself.

Agreed. Having different people describing each room/space held my attention much more than one guide reciting abbreviated descriptions, histories, which happens, I believe, when one has too much to remember and miles to cover by themselves.
Hahahaha I was all in-depth with the guides until the green haired hat woman. She did not fit the scene. I didn’t hear a thing she said all I could look at was that crazy green hair. Hard to take her serious

I remember that place when it was a nursing home. The restoration has been spectacular. It is a wonderful place!

Wonderful job Independence, Missouri! It must have taken an immense amount of work and money to bring this jewel back to its original state. I'm sure we wouldn't recognize it as a nursing home. Thank you for sharing this wonderful, historic home with us!
As a child I rode by this house every day on the school bus, probably 1965-,1966. I was fascinated by the house. When I was a girl scout we visited the property it
was a very sad nursing home. There was no beauty then,it was institutional. Glad to see it so cared for.

Correction: The reed organ is an Estey Artist's Model. It is not German. It is American and was made in Brattleboro VT. I am a reed organist and restorer. The rest of the video is great though!
I need someone to help me fix the straps on my bellows. My mother ordered the strapping material and was told how to properly fix it but we never got to it and then she was I'll and passed away. I guess I'll check TH-cam for a video, but would love some expertise.
All of the hosts do a beautiful job, expressive, not too fast, not too slow. So pleasing to listen too.

They probably showed the word “haunted?” to entice more viewers. The closest thing to strange things in the mansion is when he had the artist paint subliminal faces into the walls where the owner of the mansion would entertain his male friends to some alcohol and get them “tipsy” enough to see those painted faces on the wall come out at them.

That was a brilliantly filmed and narrated tour of a magnificent historic mansion! As a former docent, I will say that the docents that spoke in this video are amongst the best I've ever heard! If ever I travel to this area, this will be a "must see" for me! Thank you all for your time and effort in producing this excellent presentation!
10 years ago, I came here with my parents. We toured the home and loved it. So glad to see additional items have been donated and efforts continue to make more improvements.

Beautiful restoration and has to be one of the most beautiful exsisting Mansions of this type left in America. I bet this place is haunted as all get out though...
Yes, that house is haunted, and is a time capsule that hold ancient spirit.

Several years ago, I was lucky enough to tour the Vaile Mansion. It's a wealth of Victorian exuberance, and a delight to the eye. The copper bathtub really caught my attention, and I also remember the 'scandal' of the bedroom ceiling painting, as well as the 'faces' in the faux wood. Both Independence, and St. Joseph, Missouri have many gorgeous Victorian homes; being the 'gateways' to the West. Thank you, so much, for sharing this wonderful tour of the Vaile Mansion. :)

The pink cushioned seat is NOT a "tet-ah-tay" It is a French word, "tête-à-tête". Tête is the French word for "head". Tête-à-tête translates literally as head-to-head but colloquially means face-to-face. Note that the chair has one person seated on one side while the second person is seated on the other allowing them to "put their heads together" to have a private conversation in comfort. Just sayin’, the docent might want to learn this term.

And chandelier is pronounced “shan” with ch blend a soft sound like in shore or ship, not a hard ch like in chore or chew.

If you feel so inclined, please provide a phonetic spelling that an English speaker can use. I already knew from reading other sources how it is spelled, and that it is French, and that it literally means "head to head" and is used for face to face meetings as well as for that S shaped double chair - but I have never known how to pronounce it. I assume the speaker in the video was in the same position I am; knowing all about it except the pronunciation.

Beautiful house. Sad that the different owner's all had sad lives and then a nursing home . Enjoyed the tour maybe I'll get to come see it one day. O and I loved the singing at the end.

I appreciate your honesty about Mrs. Vaile's death. It's good for people to understand that opiate addiction, mental illness, and suicide are not new problems.
Oh, I really enjoyed this tour especially how each room was presented by a different person and unique personality. It was also nice to hear that the Vaile's were abolitionist so my heart can feel warm not only to the house but the people who made it, determined to do whats right even tho it was not popular. BTW, Shannon I love your style.

what a beautiful building...
One correction. The Estey organ was not from German origin. It was manufactured in Brattleboro, Vermont in the late 1800's. Many of the workers were immigrants from Germany, but the organ was made here in the U.S.
Yeah the faces painted into the wood grain is a bit creepy. I’d like to spend a night in this mansion and listen to what the walls say. Old homes creak and moan , especially at night!

One of the very best vidio tours of historic homes. I especially enjoyed the flow of using several different people to present different areas of the home. Would love to tour.
The gentlemen and the ladies did an incredible job describing all of the features the house.
I loved everything about this house but kept waiting for the guides to take us up to the top of this mansion. I wanted to see the views from the top
I wonder if the cherub without wings was symbolic that she may have lost or wanted a baby.
I would have liked to see the various turrets and the attic and the basement, as well as the workings of the water and sewer systems. I love all the weird little spaces in old houses.
No time to listen this am... but love the photo. It reminds me of my high school in the UK. Highclare College for girls. Wonderful building, tennis courts, fields for running, lacrosse and tennis!
I enjoyed each presenter’s wonderful stories.
You have your story of the Chickering and Steinway Companies and their pianos nearly completely backwards. Chickering was a very well thought of Piano Manufacturer in the 19th Century. The Steinweg family came to the US from Germany and brought their Piano Man’f. expertise w/them. The Steinways did in fact build a piano of new design. It was to become very well accepted.
Mr. Jonas Chickering resisted this change to the “modern” piano and was well known in music circles for his vociferous defense of the vastly inferior Square Grand design and Victorian piano. There are published works in which the Chickering view is printed. Subsequently the Chickering Piano’s reputation suffered and eventually the company was sold. Because of the prominence of the name it has survived through many iterations and pianos bearing the name are still sold.

Accidental overdose of her prescription medicine OR it is possible she may have intentionally overdosed as her fear of being alone, while her husband was on trial is Washington DC. 😞 Either way, it is most unfortunate.

We visited Vaile Mansion today and Charlie was our guide. It's a wonderful place full of history and art. A very interesting tour. Highly recommended.
Staunch abolitionists? Slave state? This place was built in the 1880's. Seems like historical revisionism.
The civil war ended in 1865. Slavery was abolished but still done “under the table” by some. Others used hired help.
So it’s not crazy to think these folks were against slavery.

Really beautiful mansion! It always seems like these rich manor houses always have tragedy connected to it. Was so sorry to hear of Mrs fails death and loneliness must have been just terrible for her and her dear husband who went through all that misery of being accused of something he wasn't even guilty of, it's a horrible tragedy! Tremendously beautiful place! I bet it's exquisite in the winter time during the Christmas season when it's all decorated! Thank you for sharing this video and creating it for us out here in video land . It was truly a beautiful thing to look upon this magnificent house! WOW! This was an absolutely wonderful video. I hope to see this home someday. You did such a lovely job guiding the tour through the home. It is astounding how beautiful this home is and the sad loneliness of a legacy of no children to enjoy and inherit it. Clearly, Mr. Vaile loved his wife so that he never could remarry. Most men of those days would have done so immediately. The different tour guides were a delight to listen to. Thank you for all the loving care put into preserving this home and the heritage of Missouri for future generations.
Well wealth has a ranking system they would have been new money. Many looked down at that back then. And there still doing it today times.
Such a beautiful home in ground the state should voluntarily keep that the way it was so that that part of History does not get lost in the shuffle of most of the new age garbage
As a child in the 1960s I rode the school bus every day past this house. My girl scout troop visited when it was a nursing home,. Very Sad!!! Awful institutional paint colors and tile floors. Forgotten people and a house in ruin. I think of it often.

Could you imagine if you lived in the Victorian air what it would be like to live in a house that big? From what I know if you were a child, you would be raised by a nanny, and won't get to see your parents for days. I think it would be so cool to live like them for at least one day. But I bet it was hard living then

Nursing home for 71yrs I would say it was haunted.
wow i would rather have a older historic home like this than a brand new modern home, these homes last longer not being built with over priced cheap materials an they have way more character

I have seen Mrs. Vaile’s photo before! (I have friends I just saw last Sunday on the East coast for a wedding who are from Missouri! I can’t wait to ask them if they’ve been here! Poor woman...what a sad story for the Vaile couple.
Yes this story was so sad no children especially people acting jealous over their money. Poor Sophie must have felt lonely.
