Why is it so entertaining to hear three guys debating over how to describe a character's sexuality? 🏳️🌈😂
My number one is Alphys.
In my opinion, she’s one of the most tragic characters in the whole entire game (besides Chara and Asriel). She’s depressed like Sans, but for a different reason.
Spoilers ahead
The amalgamates.
Keep in mind that most of this is speculation based on implications of in-game dialogue.
The amalgamates were monsters who were already near death when they were injected with Determination to not only save them, but create souls as strong as humans so Asgore can break the barrier without having to kill any innocent children.
Unfortunately, as you already know, this experiment went wrong.
The reason Alphys used monsters who were about to die anyways was because she didn’t want to kill any living subjects. In her mind, worse case scenario, she fails and the subjects die. Since they were going to anyway, no harm no fowl.
As you already know, at first it was working!
The subjects were fine and walking around like nothing had happened!
The families of the amalgamates received word from Alphys that their loved ones were fine, and they were excited!
But then the subjects started melting into one another, and Alphys feared telling the amalgamations’ families what she had accidentally done. (Also she created Flowey using Asriel’s dust and some Determination; again not on purpose.)
She hid it for years as monsters started to demand that they see their loved ones. Even Asgore doesn’t know about it.
In fact, Asgore grew worried about Alphys when she drew into herself and became anti-social.
She did not realize that she’d create immortal, unkillable amalgamations that constantly felt horrendous and torturous pain and always would.
She did NOT mean to hurt those monsters like she did. She feels tons of shame, guilt, and self-hatred for it, and literally almost committed suicide by jumping off the waterfall at the garbage dump when she met Undyne, who stopped her and brought some joy to her life.
In a neutral run of the game where you kill Undyne, Alphys DOES commit suicide, according to Mettaton.
The only way to give her a truly happy ending is in the True Pacifist route, where you convince her to admit what she’s done to the monsters and try to make it right.
And she’s finally released from her guilt.
In Elementary School when I first played Undertale, I didn’t get Alphys at first. However, in Middle School I hated myself then and felt tremendous guilt for things I’d done in Elementary School. I totally related to Alphys, and only in Middle School did I get her. (Although I haven’t inflicted infinite and eternal torture on anyone, in case that wasn’t clear.)

Chara isn't Satin, nor are they a direct parallel to the player "especially on a genocide run." Their actions are directly influenced by ours, and if we look at their actions we can figure out a lot about them. Yes, they are ambiguous, but if we really look at the game we know that they have a silly sense of humor, they were most likely abused on the surface, and that they really loved the Dreemurrs and the rest of the monsters.
