I just want to say I recently just found about this channel and I really enjoying the content you are the best deltarune theoryst continue what you are doing man we all with you and consider another subscriber and a like
The whole monsters smiling when killed/dying is also interesting when you consider that Berdly has an entirely different set of sprites during the Snowgrave version of his battle, removing his typical smug smile with a much more grave stare. Could just be Deltarune not following Undertale's 'rules' but I think its worth a thought.
There's also a theory that the entirety of Undertale takes place in a dark world, and Berdly is a lightner. Then again, we see like the entire main cast of UT as lightners in DR, so idk
If we follow the logic of the theory in this video regarding why monsters smile in Undertale when they're killed in battle, Berdly's grave expression can be seen as another example of Berdly caring more about Noelle in this moment, rather than thinking about his own safety
The pain scale in the hospital in Deltarune can also be used as evidence for keeping spirits strong, since on the highest pain rating ICE-E is still smiling. There's also that thing with the "pain" flavor which is associated with Gaster, and it is mentioned by Spamton: characters both seen always smiling.
I always interpreted a "Malice Smile" as a demonstration that said character is incredibly happy to be causing you pain, that your turmoil brings them amusement and joy.
It's actually not uncommon for people to smile when they aren't even happy. This is called emotional disregulation and it can occur when someone is overwhelmed by extreme stress/emotion. The rest of the body language of a person experiencing emotional disregulation will often not match with their seemingly happy face. Observers will unconsciously or consciously notice this and will understandably be disturbed or feel threatened. In Floweys case, I think his smiles may actually be an expression of a form of twisted happiness as he is happy to be able to force suffering on others. This malicious smile can be a way to express superiority.
I am a Japanese who does not understand English, but I enjoy watching every video thanks to the subtitles you have set up for all the videos. I think that thanks to the way you make these videos, you are liked by people of other languages and the number of subscribers is increasing very much. Congrats on 30,000 subscribers! Theory at deltarune is also always impressive, and I am impressed every time I watch it.(I'm glad you're incorporating the Japanese version of deltarune into your theory too!) And thanks to your elaborate videos even when there were only a few subscribers, I can continue to watch them now.(I found out about this channel from the video with the most views on this channel lol.) Thank you for making elaborate videos every time! I really appreciate you making videos that even people who speak other languages can enjoy! Keep up the good work! (I really can't use English, so I use translation software.)
You sorta mentioned this in passing, but i just want to point out that in monster culture, there seems to be a connection between smiling and pain. Like you showed, every boss smiles when dying, but there are other examples of smiles being associated with being in pain. Now, this connection isn’t universal, smiles don’t always connect to pain and pain doesn’t always connect to smiles (for example, lancer is constantly smiling except for when susie is fighting him), but it’s reoccurring enough that it’s worth making a note of. Maybe being shattered across time and space is painful, and that’s the reason for gaster’s creepy smile?
@@ChestersonJack fair enough, but there are other examples that prove that pain and smiles aren’t always connected. Papyrus smiles a lot despite only actually being in pain at the electric maze and in his boss fight. Mettaton is smiling all throughout his ex boss fight, whether or not you actually attack him. Still, monsters often smile when in pain. The boss deaths are some examples, but we also have the likes of temmie and snowdrake’s mom. Like i said, it isn’t universal, just something i found noteworthy (after someone pointed it out to me, i didn’t make the connection myself)
Laughter or smiling as a reaction to pain is a common thing, actually. As a coping mechanism. "Grin and bear it", a kind of control over things, putting on a facade of happiness to the point of straining your face, because the alternative would be showing your emotions in a place, or to people, that it would be unsafe to. Where raw, cynical humor at the sick situation is the only thing you can do to keep going. It's a theme throughout the No Mercy route, the forced smile. "You just thought of something funny", where you have to keep things humorous, "funny", to keep them at a distance, less serious, less "real".
Gaster has a lot of devil motifs, though I am not necessarily convinced that it implies evil. I mean, "monster" typically has a negative connotation, as does darkness. But we also see angels used in a negative connotation. Not to mention the can of worms that is determination. So excited for more game.
I genuinely have no clue what Gaster's whole devil motif means. Pretty much every number associated with him is a variation on '666', and Jevil and Spamton's backstories definitely resemble a "deal with the devil" trope, but it seems more like he has the power of creation, judging by how Deltarune's intro and old promotional material are framed. Chara refers to themselves as a "demon" at one point in Undertale, which does seem to imply the existence of hell and/or the devil, but "demon" could also just mean a malicious spirit. Also, on the topic of devil characters, there are a lot of hologram screens around the start of chapter 2 that feature a horned silhouette dancing around. I have no idea who this is supposed to be.
@@kevinm5940 The power of creation could still be associated with devils/demons/evil, especifically with the Demiurge in Gnostic beliefs, who is said to be an evil/malicious/flawed creature that created the physical world and trapped us within it. A very notable part of this is that the physical world, and the Demiurge, are associated with darkness, meanwhile God and the spiritual/non-physical and pure world is associated with light.
i agree. i'm honestly almost sure gaster isn't a bad guy. everything we're told about him paints him as a good dude, and he's also pleasant in talking to us. the only negative thing said _possibly_ about him, from riverperson, isn't that much proof compared to the overwhelming positive talk. we're told to beware him by one person, sure, but we're _also_ told to beware asgore. for all we know, he's likely just a good guy who suffered a horrible fate. nothing paints him as a threat to us. the easter eggs with him are creepy, but not because they present harm but out of mystery. he's just trying to be found.
Lancer also knows about the legend. If you refuse to listen to the legend from ralsei, when lancer crashes into him, susie is confused at the mention of a 'bad guy's to which lancer says y'know, teardrop headed kid, from the legend?" Combine this with lancer mentioning the [C] key at the first dark candy tree via sign, and he clearly knows more than his personality let's on
In fairness Lancer can seemingly teleport and has an absurd amount of HP (5th highest, the only characters with more are Jevil, King, Spamton NEO and Giga Queen) Needless to say he's an anomaly.
I never realized that one Gaster follower had just a giant grinning maw. I thought the part with his eyes and nose was his head, and he just had a really skinny neck and stubby lil' arms with like a fish head. Like I thought his mouth was just negative space. Knowing now it's just a giant smiling head, makes it SOOO much worse. Also, I'm starting to wonder if Susie even HAS a family. She never bothered calling them when she slept over at Kris' house, she talks about Ralsei's room he made for her as if she doesn't have a room of her own, and certain little stuff like how she's the one drinking the milk left in the alley by Alphys, not an actual cat, I know Susie's a glutton but maybe it's hinting towards Susie actually not having a family or home of her own.
that "gluttony" might also be a hint. she eats chalk and eats an entire cake in one bite, both might hint to not having much food in the first place. after all, chalk is not tasty
Well the sprite is ambiguous. Since the non-goner version is as you describe more of a weird fish guy, we could make the assumption that the goner version is the same. However, since all the details on the regular version of the character are lost in the goner version, that makes it (probably intentionally) harder to identify (also, I may be wrong, but I think the talking animation is also slightly changed on the goner version so that it looks like it's mouth is the big open space??)
17:00 Yeah I found that really odd. Jevils items both link to Susie (Devilsknife is a Susie weapon and Jevilstail fits with the whole thing around Susie's tail) And that makes sense because Susie has decent connections and parallels with Jevil. But then logically I would have expected Spamton to give Kris related items, due to their connections. But instead it's Ralsei gear (Puppet scarf is a Ralsei weapon and Dealmaker is a pair of glasses with Ralsei being the only one of the three to wear glasses and the spamton quest even calling attention to Ralsei's glasses) So what connection do Spamton and Ralsei have? And how on earth will a secret boss connect closer to Kris than spamton?
I mean there's that theory about the fact that the next dark world is in kris' house, and how the flowers in the trash can or maybe even kris' lost devil horn headband might be the next secret boss
@@REALKN1FE I don't know if you can really call that a "Theory", it's practically confirmed. And even then I feel the flowers would connect much better to Ralsei.
@@pineappleudh6561 , It's really not THAT practically confirmed... But, definitely interesting possibilities here. Maybe Ralsei is a sort of puppet/stand-in/messenger from Asriel, reaching across time & space to Kris... maybe something happened to Asriel (though this is pretty much just wild mass guessing. Still, they HAVE to be involved with each other SOMEHOW, with their names & appearances...). Maybe that's part of why he seemed to want to move on past Kris's trauma over Spamton, until he realized that Kris needed help. (Maybe that whole "smile through this, don't think too hard about it" attitude...) What's intriguing is that on the official Fangamer description for the Floralsei t-shirt, it says "Ralsei's always getting mixed up with flowers. ...Wait, that hasn't happened?" So uhhh... somehow, he might get involved with Asgore's flowers which keep getting thrown away? Or the ones that seem to resemble human souls under glass in Asgore's apartment? o.o (Maybe Ralsei's Light World form just plain IS a flower that somehow got left in the dark? Who knows...) (I have a staggering hypothesis about this subject actually... But I'm so worried that I'm right, & might actually legit spoil a big part of the story... So I'm forcing myself not to go around talking about it. I haaaate the feeling of holding back, but rather than experience the short burst of "Hah, I called it!" while having already lessened the revelation's impact... I'd rather let everyone enjoy the game &, if I AM right, then people can be naturally hit hard by the twist as Toby no doubt hopes.)
@@ZaCloud-Animations___she-her Honestly I have no problem with you saying your hypothesis. As for Ralsei always getting mixed up with flowers, I still love the idea that Ralsei is the Deltarune Flowey.
@@REALKN1FE i think that the next dark world will be mainly focused on the TV world, however if ch.2 had an extra boss that recalled Mettaton Neo, it's possible that we may end up getting an extra boss that looks like flowey
Someday, or so I assume, we will unambiguously see a sprite of Gaster. Even if he is the mysteryman from Undertale, I think it's safe to say that when we finally "see Gaster", he'll have a new appearance and design. On that day, a schism will forever mark older videos that use the mysteryman sprite as a shorthand for Gaster, seperating them from the ones that came after. I find the idea midly curious.
With the wingding motifs, particularly the snowflake, I had been wondering if the symbols in the graveyard spelled anything in wingdings, but the only one I could see even remotely matching was the snowflake. So it's likely not the case, but it feels nice knowing there IS some sort of wingding symbolism in the game.
i adore the abstraction in this, the way you remember that it’s all part of a larger narrative and weave it in so the threads all stay together. like we’ve come upon the platonic ideal of stories
What a really fascinating video! I appreciate all the little details, like the smiley icon in RAlsei's stats. It's always cool to see the added depths you go to, by pointing out translation differences and deeper elements of the game files in UT and Deltarune. Congrats on 30k subs, too!
I've been theorizing Ralsei as Gaster's puppet for awhile now. Though I began theorizing that due to the weird callback to the ruins in Queen Spades' basement. And how the theme that plays there sounds like a VERY slowed down version of one of Flowey's battle theme Your Best nightmare. Plus how Ralsei directly called Spamton a broken computer program that Kris doesn't need to worry about. Which I always found to be such odd OOC behavior for Ralsei to do at that point in the game. Cuz he tried to redeem every other bad guy up until that point. But for some reason he singles out Spamton. And when he calls Spamton just a broken computer program he turns around to face the player directly after standing back in place with the rest of the party. All that is why I started piecing together that theory. Cuz I thought that was all too strangely put together to be a coincidence. It made me consider if maybe Ralsei was Gaster's like mimic version of Asriel as a way to make Kris get more used to their role in the prophecy. But that's just my personal take on trying to make sense of that weird symbolism for that scene.
I think that makes sense. It would be only sensible that, if Ralsei has prior knowledge about Spamton, it would be because of Gaster. It's implied that Gaster got into contact with Spamton and was the "right phone call" he made that was responsible for his inexplicable success. Gaster seems to be deliberately using Spamton and Jevil for some kind of scheme, so it would make sense for him to want Ralsei to be dismissive of Spamton.
Spamton had just died. Why would he try redeeming someone already dead? He focused entirely on the fact he became an ally rather than focusing on the fact he died. So it fits in lie with the whole redemption thing. And it’s not like he’s wrong, Spamton is a broken computer program. Remember that Ralsei sees himself and the darkners’ purpose as aiding the lightners. What happened to Spamton falls in line with his beliefs, he served the lightners. What reaction to death would be appropriate? We know Ralsei is aware of the player, just like Kris is. Seeing them both look at the camera therefore isn’t strange. You’re right in that Ralsei sees themselves a tool, and would fit fine as being the puppet of another that might need to find their own identity and break free. But it’s not out of character for Ralsei to act like the way they did. While they’re kind, they’re also ignorant and are functioning in a way they perceive as for the better good. He’s shown to not know about Kris’ behavior in weird route or why he was talking to Spamton.
I've had this exact theory in my head for over 2 years now. I'm glad someone finally made a video about it. Especially the types of smiles segment, it's how my own theory was born, noticing during a genocide playthrough how often enemies smile in death and then trying to remember every significant encounter.
I personally think berdly didn't die and is in some kind of coma because he is frozen in ice and not dead so a smile from berdly not being seen might be a hint that berdly isn't dead
@@spongewaffle I think there's two possibilities: One, he is temporarily or permanently braindead (might be fixeable if you drag him to the dark world and cast a healing spell or heck, use a safe point's healing power. If it's this, Rudy's got a chance of survival too) or two, he's fallen down. He'll die quite soon, perhaps even in the morning of Day 3.
I actually think that the dark worlds were not created with a history when made, but rather the dark world already existed and the dark fountain just acts as a gateway. That explains why dark worlds have a history before the player came there.
ralsei having the puppet's scarf could also symbolize his overwhelming submissive nature, as he very quickly comes under our control in battles (as opposed to susie).
Honestly, the fact that Deltarune (and Undertale too) is LOADED with motifs and red herrings is what makes it such a good meta game. I don't think this series would've had the staying power it does today if it didn't have such an interesting meta game attached to it (the story is strong enough, sure, but think about how there's little to theorize about other similarly good games like Bug Fables and such, which don't have meta elements to investigate).
This channel just feels... Homely. Like the video equivalent to sitting by a fireplace, with rain beating against the window. Your videos are very comfortable to watch, with a surprisingly soothing TTS voice to listen to. You're able to cram so much emotion into something that sounds so monotone, I'm not sure how you do it. But I have a lot of respect for you, and can't wait to see your channel grow beyond anything you thought possible.
In case there weren’t enough smiles adding slight connections to Gaster, a certain Rouxls Kaard is always smiling, even if it doesn’t match his emotional state
Adding on to what everybody else said, and how RK is able to tell that he is being cut off due to the dialogue box limit! (I saw proof of it from a diff vid)
Honestly, you simply make some of the best theories on Deltarune I've seen around. Plus, the use of text-to-speech is nice as someone with social anxiety AND dysphoria around my voice (even if that's not why you use it).
Idk why people make fun of TTS, it’s so unnecessary, you do amazing of forming a kinda community and it’s insane, glad to have been in the community for so long
Yeah, even TTS can have a lot of personality sometimes. I know this is kind of unasked for, but Gruffet the Spider is also a TTS theorist sort of inspired by hbc. And even more unasked for, there's another TTS TH-camr that I enjoy watching called Chess Simp, who mostly does challenges against 100-rateds.
you know, i noticed something odd about jevil and spamton. jevil seems to enjoy being trapped in his cage, believing he's the only free one. meanwhile, spamton has the opposite outlook, eternally wanting more and more and feeling trapped with what he has. jevil, who has no desire to grow more powerful, is a devil… but spamton, who is strongly motivated to grow stronger, is an angel. are there any other examples of the "ambitious = angel, content = devil" motif? it seems like it means something…
hmm... Maybe I thought of one? The implication seems to be that by sealing the dark fountains we will banish the Angel's Heaven. And it seems like the Knight, along with their reverberating influence, is striving to create more and more dark worlds. Therefore, they're striving to uphold the Angel's Heaven?
THEORY: Gerson’s immortal. Hear me out here. If Undertale and Deltarune are set around the same time but in different timelines, how is Gerson alive in one but dead in the other? Did something happen in Deltarune that resulted in Gerson’s premature death? Or is Gerson unnaturally preserving his life in Undertale. He is already an established liar, as he said he was not a hero and never was in the genocide route even though we hear that he used to be the Hammer of Justice, a hero that Undyne admired. Is it really too much to believe that he is hiding the fact that he can cheat death from the other monsters? In another line, he mentions that he has lived for a long time, “maybe too long.” Is he trying to indicate that he has lived more than his natural span of years? As for how he survives, Gerson explains this in the genocide route if you threaten him. He says that you can’t kill him in there (either the cave he was in or a shop in general), and that he wouldn’t have survived for so long without knowledge like that. Why would he mention the second part? Does he often receive death threats while running his store, or is murder not the only death he avoids by hiding in his cave all day. He clearly hasn’t been out of the cave in a while since he doesn’t remember where the Tem Village is. I don’t know what the implications could be, but maybe Gerson can see the game’s code, or maybe Gaster has contacted him and told him some things, like he is implied (by the Gerson memorial park bench) to have done in Deltarune. This theory is mostly just for fun. It’s probably not right or all that important if it is right, but I thought it was cool.
Well, Undertale does appear to be taking place earlier than Deltarune, seeing how those who were children in Undertale are teens in Deltarune, and we don't really know if Gerson would've died by that point in Undertale
In undertale/deltarune monsters only die of age when the have children, in deltarune he has a son named alvin, in undertale he doesn't (at least as we know) so he and any other monsters that don't have children will live forever
Let's also not forget that Chara does that smile as a species of "homage" to old protagonists who only had a smiling sprite. That was a great video, it made me smile (:
@@cureabees9440 by Chara smiling like RPGs protagonists? It's cause the name "Chara" is probably character (ik it's not confirmed), Chara is part of a royal family and kill the enemies like old SNES (like FF and DQ)... I could go on, but Undertale has the "subvert RPGs trope" thing to it and Chara represents, TO some degree the classic main CHARActer (sorry for the Chara joke)
this channel is literally one of the best deltarune theory channel it makes sense why you're quickly amassing so many viewers, not to mention how short the waiting time is between uploads and the little mini videos inbetween. The text to speech makes it even more enjoyable in my opinion. gl on the next video!
Я не буду писать никаких теорий. Просто хочу поблагодарить вас за то, что вы делаете. За то, какой контент вы выпускаете. Мне очень нравится вас слушать и смотреть. Я смотрю вас через переводчик. Большое вам спасибо.
This might not mean anything, but I should note that so far both of the end-of-chapter cliffhangers have ended on a smile of some sort: Chapter 1 ends with Kris giving the now-iconic creepy smile to the audience after summoning their knife, and Chapter 2 ends with a smile appearing on the TV after the Dark Fountain opens. Might be worth keeping an eye out to see if the later Chapters follow the same pattern.
Both chapters have some indication that Chara is possessing Kris (CHPT 1: Kris has a smile similar to Chara's and Chara's knife. CHPT 2: Kris pulls out a knife but doesn't show his face. Edit: BEFORE ANYONE ASKS, SHE DOES THIS NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO.
3:25 i never get to bting this up, but when i watched sans's eye, it flashes light blue, and yellow, patience and justice, him dealing appropriate justice, and waiting untill the end to talk, im not good at getting points across, but i thinks its pretty cool
So I want to add something to this... what is really weird about Deltarune is how heavy Gaster is in everything. It was "super obvious" Kris was evil at the end of Ch1 and at the end of Ch2 we've been given tons of information showing Gaster is involved with this and is likely the knight. Remember what Toby did in UT with a file warning people not to dig around? He isn't hiding Gaster anymore, but Gaster isn't a focus. I can't shake this feeling we're being played. Ralsei's unknown goals and off screen talks, Gaster being everywhere... it is so bluntly obvious that there is a connection in things that it feels wrong. Toby wants us to think it is Gaster, it is Ralsei. This is a red herring. Even Ice-E being a potential evil currently is a red herring. It is too early to just give us the evil person or major plot from only chapter 2 of was it 7 or 8 chapters in total? Even Flowey who was quickly introduced spoke to the player twice before being gone 80% of the game. --- Mild warning, this final thing is a potential try to figure the major plot so proceed with caution. --- The only explanation I have for this is December Holiday. Her ribbons being in the Dark World (Noelle recognizes those) and how she went missing. Angel's heaven being attempted before so people could give it a name would also fit in with both Holiday girls being associated with that. It makes sense if she met everyone we did and learned the truth and this would also explain why they had lives... because they lived before in past made dark worlds.. Jevil is "free" outside of the game's confines. Spamton is a puppet. A tv themed world is likely to have an "entertainment" theme. It seems crazy but the game could very well be a static ending because they wish to break free. Free of being video game characters for our entertainment. This is the only explanation for things that would fit in a way that could be expanded on in a way that makes sense to me.
Gaster apparently wanting "a new future" and one that doesn't involve the world being covered in darkness seems to imply he's a good guy more than anything, and he wanted to help us in _some_ way too. Plus he calls Kris and Susie wonderful people. It's still pretty in your face, with the Twitter messages and death screen, but from the way things are now, I wonder if in giving Jevil and Spamton some form of awareness, the whole he was trying to break from that which they became aware of.
Gaster invited us into Deltarune, only to kick us out? Seems a bit rude. I don't think that's what his goal is. I think Gaster wants to find a way to confront the "game"s creator, using the player's behavior, to try to stop the inevitable Roaring that will crash the ""fictional"" Dark Worlds into the ""real"" Light World And keep the end of the world from happening.
There's certainly a lot of moving parts in Deltarune. Gaster, the second voice in the character creator, Ralsei, Kris, Dess, the Knight, and the Angel. Add in the optional bosses, us as the player, including the actual soul that Kris had potentially removed before our arrival. It all involves the theme of freedom, of which Deltarune clearly told us in Chapter 1. The player is limited in what they can do, always reaching the same ending regardless of what was done during the Chapter. Kris is beholden to the player, Ralsei is beholden to the Legend. Dess is missing, potentially trapped. Gaster is trapped in the space between worlds. The optional bosses revolve around being free. I think you're right, that something is a red herring. But it's the question we're asking. We're asking who the Knight is, who the main antagonist will be, but I've yet to see anyone ask why the Knight is trying to start the Roaring. Is it the desire to be free as well?
A bit confused by what you mean “obviously” super evil. Kris has not shown to be. They wanted pie. We don’t know their intentions with their actions in chapter 2, so we shouldn’t assume it’s evil. Ice-E being evil was actually hinted at back in Undertale too. A nightmare version could appear with the right fun value.
This is probably your best video yet dude. One of the most grounded, well reasoned, well researched Deltarune videos I've seen, there was a ton of excellent analysis and very little crackhead theory crafting (not that I don't love crackhead theory crafting). My main take away is that Toby is definitely fascinated by smiles and especially the perversion of smiles for other purposes besides showing joy. The earliest example that I can think of would be Dr. Andonuts's battle sprite in the Halloween hack, which is a very notable use of a smile being used to convey malice, rage, and sadness. I would hesitate to add smiles to the long long list of Gaster associated motifs, if only because the motif seems so ubiquitous in Toby's work, and could just be his go-to as a writer to convey strong emotion in general. In fact, all the examples you showed make me think of it more as a Toby Fox signature than a Gaster signature. That doesn't mean that your instinct to be on guard for Gaster when you see a smile is wrong, especially considering it seems Toby loves to use smiles to evoke creepiness or unease, and any creepy situation in UT/DR inevitably circles back to Gaster. Just my opinion. Also, Bill Wurtz homage, pog.
THEORY: What if the writing in the codes “unused_unused texts” are spoken by Gaster when he first fell down into the void? I think he might have fallen into deltarune. Not the world, but the code. EXTRA: I saw a video by someone which they say the secret horse stable in front of the snail racers “if you don’t know that just type undertale secret horse stable or something like that”. Gaster basically pops up in it and says “X”. It’s not about what he said, it’s just the horse stable. Ya know? Knight in chess is basically a horse model. “Horse stable with Gaster in it ?” “Horse = Knight?” Toby I love you. “For extra stuff, look at the reply’s of this comment.”
I know. People think the white man with the line coming out of its head is basically a piece of Gaster. It probably is. Cause why would Toby make another White dude, in a unused room “which you can access without the dog check screen popping up”, that speaks in wing dings, and is also in a horse stable “which is a unused code you can run without the game crashing.” Also the same man appears in a sound test room which has Gasters theme song. With the happy town that was in this video. I hope this helps.
@Golder06 You got it mixed up. If you are randomly going to rooms, there is a unused room which has the the man. When leaving that room, it makes you go to the sound test room. And “idk if this is true” if you are at the first box room at Snowdin and you go up, there is a VERY slim chance it brings you to the unused man’s room. Remember, I’m not talking about Mystery man, I’m talking about the white lined dude.
11:17 Before you talked about Chara being "your friend behind you" I thought it was Flowey and he vanishes because like when you backtrack he doesn't want you to realise he's watching so he hides in the ground since you'll probably turn around
I've always interpreted Sans smiling as him having smiling depression and trying not to drag his brother down by his fears of knowing about the nature of this world, but that's an interesting theory! (also, I'm glad you're gaining a fanbase, you deserve it :D)
I’ve always believed that entry number 17 and Gaster had the Smile sound clip first, and Toby simply reused the sound later when muffet was added (she was from a Kickstarter backer) As for the actual video… Most of your Ralsei theorising is solid, but I disagree with the idea that most Darkners don’t know about the prophecy. It’s clear that Darkners don’t know about the roaring, but it’s made clear multiple times that the chapter 1 Darkners recognise the fun gang as the heroes of legend. In fact lancer, seam and King all mention the prophecy directly. At minimum that implies that the Knight told king about the prophecy, however I think it’s more likely that the prophecy was actually “whispered amongst shadows” like the prophecy itself states.
It's surprising the amount of effort that went into this video, you discussed a lot of things I've never seen someone else mention, and I've been in the fandom since almost the start, this is awesome!
I just wanted to express my appreciation for the deep levels of meta textual analysis of these games, it never feels too much like a stretch while not also pointing out painfully obvious surface level details that most TH-camrs stick to
You've got to be one of the most genuine youtubers I've ever watched. That last segment was just so nice. Congrats on 30k you deserve every sub you have!
I noticed smiles are a big of UT/DR too, I'm really interested where will this end up. It's a really interesting symbol that isn't used much in other games that I know I also want to add Spamton became one of my favourite characters of all time, looking forward to who we will meet in the upcoming chapters! Ps Toby is such a genius writer, can't wait to see more of his work. And big thanks to you for figuring all this stuff out, you are the one that introduced me to Toby using different language styles in japanese. Good luck with your future projects!
I loove the fact these games have so much "hidden" lore and yet we don't know anything for sure. I always love your videos, your research and work is amazing! Tho find myself noticing how much I get into the researching theories as well, when I literally think of something and you mention it right away! :D
17:06 woah you’re totally right. I never thought about it that way. If throughout this whole Deltarune journey we’ve been walking alongside someone who is closely tied to if not Gaster themself, that would be awesome!
It honestly makes so much sense to me, and it seems like the best explanation for why Ralsei seems "sus." I think it's more likely that he's been directed by Gaster though, not Gaster himself.
Can't wait for the reveal that Gaster is just some guy. He has no powers, he isn't pulling the strings from some unseen location, he's just a guy working at a gas station or something.
The thank you segment at the end was more touching than I'd expected considering I used this exact video as my "short term reward" for getting something important I needed to do today done. This video came out at the perfect time for me and was genuinely lovely to listen in on. Perhaps I'll cave and get reddit so I can share some of my own fanart of this lovely channel, as a small little thank you for all you've been able to do for us, or just share fan speculations that may inspire you or others to look at certain details in new lights. Amazing video, as always. Certainly have us some ideas to chew on. I look forward to seeing what you discuss next.
As one of the people who joined the subreddit a little while ago, I'd love to see whatever you have drawn! (I know it's sometimes scary to post things like art, but know that no matter how low or high effort, everything is appreciated! :D).
@@bombintheseeinq I've been posting my artwork, both original art and fan work, online for many years, so I'm no stranger to that lingering fear. I may just give this a shot though! Who knows what other wonders I may find in this charming community!
I love this content so much... I’ve been going through a though time, just wanted to say how much having these fun little theories and such have meant to me. Thanks a bunch, wholesome bread person! You deserve all the love your fans give you, these videos clearly take a lot of time and research. You’ve earned it!
16:45 It's worth mentioning that on the webpage it was "appeared" (past time) while in Ralsei's lengend it's "appear" (present time which actually points to the future). That means it already happened from Gaster's point of view.
Gosh, your community and channel is so wholesome and enjoyable that it’s rare you’ll see me avoid watching your videos when they come out. It makes it even more sweet and rewarding seeing you so happy (apparently you don’t need a human voice to communicate how sweet of a person you can be, haha). But! I can’t keep gushing over how your channel gives me an ample supply of the warm fuzzies, I have speculations to add! I find it that smiles represent how Toby wanted to present Undertale, being a subversive game that jumbles with your pre-conceived notions so you can truly see UT for what it is trying to be without detaching yourself. You’d think it was just a normal game if Flowey didn’t trick you, baring his sadistic smile, just like how the boss monster’s deaths would have been numbing if it weren’t for their odd reaction of smiling though death, appealing to the player’s humanity to make the run most painful. Heck, even the reaction of the regular enemies when killed is surprising because they are shocked and devoid of humour (like Berdly in Snowgrave, too). From here, I guess we can segment the smiles into the hope smile (genuine or forced, but I guess there has to be some hope present to force a hopeful smile in the Underground), soulless smile, and the grand- SMILE MOTIF! I’m not too sure where we can go with this whole comment, but it’s food for thought.
"Where are you coming from" You see, when you look, and even shout into the void, Bread, the void will start to look, and even shout back. You brought us upon yourself. (Love your content, the tts is actually kinda neat, keep it up!)
Glad to see your community and fanbase growing steadily! Your videos are always top-notch in the quality department, so I think it's about time for you to get some more recognition. Great video as per usual!
Do you ever wonder if Gaster isn’t going to appear in the story at all? Like, to the casual player, it wouldn’t make sense to tie major plot details to some scientist from the other game that barely gets mentioned at all. They would have to properly introduce him first.
To add onto Gaster being linked to the prophecy: In chapter 1 Ralsei says the prophecy was foretold by time and space and Gaster was shattered across time and space according to a Gaster follower. I think the wording is to specific to be a coincidence.
HOLY CRAP THAT POINT ABOUT THE CAPITALIZED TEXT IS GENIUS! I freaked out oh my lord, cause to me this actually solidifies Jevil and Spamton’s connection to Gaster. All the points before were good don’t get me wrong, but it still felt more theoretical to me. Oh also, the characters connected to Gaster, all if not most, have a sort of meta-ness or awareness of what’s going on, including Ralsei as he is theorized or hinted as using ways to keep control away from the player momentarily to speak to Kris. A bit off topic but.. Toby’s so smart about his mysteries, he has a lot for us to explore but we receive answers that only create more questions, and lots of series’ fail and sometimes die halfway through because the mystery has already been figured out, or it’s just not been intriguing enough. The questions and theories around Gaster have been going unanswered for years ever since he was first discovered in Undertale. Sorry about the long comment, have a good night!🤍
4:00 But, Pyrope uses a different kind of fire, his has faces. I've noticed that the fire Toriel and Asgore and even Asriel at the very beginning of his fight (before the music kicks up to full) use have a very specific design. which makes Sans and Papyrus' bones being slightly different... concerning to say the least.
I think you should have a dedicated video about Everyman. He is an enigma that doesn't seem to have an explanation, but is ALL OVER Deltarune, and amalgamates can mimic him(As shown, DT allows you to see things that dont exist or Save Points)
At the WingDings part I thought “no way is Dealmaker WingDings for $” and it got to the point where I had to try it and when I saw the glasses I almost cried, not the first time a Deltarune theory made me so emotional but it gets to a point where we all just break down and shout into the abyss we dug ourselves into “either we are all insane or Toby Fox is god” Edit: that ending. Hearing you talk about your community was unexplainably emotional. You deserve all of the success you have and seeing a community being made around this channel just makes me happy.
@@commenteroftruth9790 in the chapter "OH GOD THERE'S WINGDINGS EVERYWHERE" he mentions that dealmaker, the glasses spamton gives you after defeating him, is a "$" because $ in wingdings is glasses which is insane because Spamton is all about $$$ and he gives you glasses so that being a WD thing was crazy, so I tried it with an online WD translator and it was true.
Gaster could also have a laughter motif. Entry no. 17 is slowed down and distorted laughter, ABC123 (which I interprit as having been created by Gaster) has that famous TTS laughter, both Spamton and Jevil laugh almost constantly.
There could be some weight to the assorted Wingdings that show up in menus (aka the smile and the snowflake that were mentioned prior). Maybe it’s working towards a name, or a passcode or cypher of some kind? Maybe something to input into the ICE-E keyboard in chapter two? Admittedly, I’m not sure if there’s any more examples of Wingdings that stick out that way in Deltarune. It really is a strange coincidence ^^;
I LITERALLY FOUND YOUR CHANNEL TODAY AND! I never thought I would like UT and DR as much as I did sometime ago, but here we are! This is a pretty entertainment. Also I personally really like videos that use TTS, so, even better.
Smiles are connected to determination in a sense. While not every determined being smiles, the fact that Chara, Flowey, and basically all the Amalgamates have smiling sprites, and the fact that the battle notification is a smile in No Mercy seem to indicate that determination is just like, associated with this stuff.
11:14 Chara: Smiling away like there's no tomorrow ?: The one behind you with the creepy smile Chara: Disappears, smiling not from joy or malice anymore but now to hide the immense burning pain that sentence caused.
I think the most important/interesting thing about your theory of gaster telling ralsei stuff is that, in chapter 2, ralsei doesnt know what being ralsei is like, implying that he's either using a façade or that he hasn't been enough around people to know what his personality's like I want to use the second option I provided to ask this: if ralsei has never met anyone before Kris and Susie, how does he know about the profecy? There aren't any libraries in castle town. How does he know that darkners get turned into statues when in other dark worlds? He would have needed to go to other dark worlds first with other darkers to know that. But that has already been asked by the fandom enough, so I'll provide another, more interesting question: *How does he know he's a prince of the dark?* Royalty needs people to rule under in order to be considered royalty, but he has no subjects, and more importantly, how does he know he's a *prince*? In history, there have been countless kids that have been titled kings and queens, but that has only happened because their parents died and they didn't have any older silblings to take over. But ralsei is still a prince *Where's the king?*
Wait wait wait- since you mentioned the phones correspond to the parenthesis in Wingdings... Gaster called Spamton on the phone, right? and A parenthesis...if you turn it on it's side, it looks like a smile???? Either Toby Fox is a genius or we are all going totally insane
Smiles in Undertale and Deltarune tends to be negative actually, more an evil smile. Characters like Undyne smiling when she does is an example of an "evil smile" in the sense that she IS happy because as far as she knows she held you off long enough for the others to escape. Smiling having a magical meaning seems a bit of a stretch

16:35 Even though his design incorporates aspects of Kris’ childhood like the crayon and the horns, I don’t think Ralsei has an actual physical light world object as his base. When Lancer turns to stone, Ralsei says that only the Grand Dark Fountain’s “pure darkness” can restore him, implying Ralsei is unaffected because he himself is “pure darkness” The only other foreign darkner that is unaffected by the Cyber World is the original starwalker, who doesn’t have a light world counterpart despite never leaving Kris’ pocket from the school to the library. This seems to imply that he too is “pure darkness.” The original starwalker‘s entire presence in chapter 2 feels like Toby explicitly trying to demonstrate this to us.
I actually believed HP stood for HoPe for a long time. It fits with Lv and Exp far too well. Hope to beat Asriel so you don't lose Hope and keep trying. How somehow reducing it to 0 makes you lose but not die in both UT or in DR where some losses are acknowledged. Monsters even mentioned something about sharing their feelings through magic. In other words they are convincing the Soul to give up and it explains why food restores it. What often helps give you hope? A favorite food or even a good meal.
There is a leitmotif of Happy town on Welcome To The city!! Its very dificult to catch but its there, that 3 notes play after some melodies from the song!!
Why does seam the shopkeeper and gaster have VERY VERY similar face features? Is gaster hiding as seam? Is that why seam jevil used to be friends? Why would he need dark shards that have the ability of looking into different worlds?

The whole monsters smiling when killed/dying is also interesting when you consider that Berdly has an entirely different set of sprites during the Snowgrave version of his battle, removing his typical smug smile with a much more grave stare. Could just be Deltarune not following Undertale's 'rules' but I think its worth a thought.
I mean it IS the "weird" route after all....
There's also a theory that the entirety of Undertale takes place in a dark world, and Berdly is a lightner. Then again, we see like the entire main cast of UT as lightners in DR, so idk
I don’t think berdly really cares about staying determined when kris is slowly corrupting noelle into a demonic creature

Lancer doesn't discount your idea. If it's a monster things. Lancer isn't a monster, he's a darkner.
@@dededeletethis9940 I know, I was just saying the lancer thing probably isn’t the best example.
Well, yea. Don't forget about
"Is that a cut on your face, or part of your eye? The gash waves down as if you cry. The pain itself is reason why."
Gaster has a lot of devil motifs, though I am not necessarily convinced that it implies evil.
I mean, "monster" typically has a negative connotation, as does darkness.
But we also see angels used in a negative connotation. Not to mention the can of worms that is determination.
So excited for more game.
I think so too. But it's noteworthy that Gaster has demonic motifs and that he's the one telling us to banish the Angel's Heaven
@@kevinm5940 Gaster is 6 because his name has six letters in it....... probably.

Jesus dude you ruined that sprite for me.
@@lukiia9854 I always assumed it was intentional. Make a sprite really creepy, then show how it was totally mundane the whole time.
17:00
Yeah I found that really odd.
Jevils items both link to Susie (Devilsknife is a Susie weapon and Jevilstail fits with the whole thing around Susie's tail)
And that makes sense because Susie has decent connections and parallels with Jevil.
But then logically I would have expected Spamton to give Kris related items, due to their connections.
But instead it's Ralsei gear (Puppet scarf is a Ralsei weapon and Dealmaker is a pair of glasses with Ralsei being the only one of the three to wear glasses and the spamton quest even calling attention to Ralsei's glasses)
So what connection do Spamton and Ralsei have?
And how on earth will a secret boss connect closer to Kris than spamton?
I mean there's that theory about the fact that the next dark world is in kris' house, and how the flowers in the trash can or maybe even kris' lost devil horn headband might be the next secret boss
@@REALKN1FE
I don't know if you can really call that a "Theory", it's practically confirmed.
(Maybe that whole "smile through this, don't think too hard about it" attitude...)
What's intriguing is that on the official Fangamer description for the Floralsei t-shirt, it says "Ralsei's always getting mixed up with flowers. ...Wait, that hasn't happened?"
So uhhh... somehow, he might get involved with Asgore's flowers which keep getting thrown away? Or the ones that seem to resemble human souls under glass in Asgore's apartment? o.o
(Maybe Ralsei's Light World form just plain IS a flower that somehow got left in the dark? Who knows...)
(I have a staggering hypothesis about this subject actually...
@@ZaCloud-Animations___she-her

Aw I forgot the cemetery! lol ah well.

i adore the abstraction in this, the way you remember that it’s all part of a larger narrative and weave it in so the threads all stay together. like we’ve come upon the platonic ideal of stories

hi dorkde
That actually makes a lot of sense!

Yeah, in chapter he's against violence but using fight is enough to make him do something he doesn't want.
Honestly, you simply make some of the best theories on Deltarune I've seen around. Plus, the use of text-to-speech is nice as someone with social anxiety AND dysphoria around my voice (even if that's not why you use it).

Thanks to the Spamton sweepstakes!
you know, i noticed something odd about jevil and spamton. jevil seems to enjoy being trapped in his cage, believing he's the only free one. meanwhile, spamton has the opposite outlook, eternally wanting more and more and feeling trapped with what he has. jevil, who has no desire to grow more powerful, is a devil… but spamton, who is strongly motivated to grow stronger, is an angel.
are there any other examples of the "ambitious = angel, content = devil" motif? it seems like it means something…
hmm... Maybe I thought of one? The implication seems to be that by sealing the dark fountains we will banish the Angel's Heaven. And it seems like the Knight, along with their reverberating influence, is striving to create more and more dark worlds. Therefore, they're striving to uphold the Angel's Heaven?
I'm real proud how far you've come. Like seriously, as someone who's been watching since the second upload, it's been a lovely ride

According to CiblesGD the sound that plays on that tv is even "smile.ogg" but slowed distorted and slowed down. No one has confirmed this though.
@@TheRealSuperKirby
,,Smile.ogg" is the sound file that plays in the ,,Entry 17" room in Undertale.
@@zeo4481 ???
@@zeo4481Yes... But the comment is about the ending of ch 2 of deltarune
---
Mild warning, this final thing is a potential try to figure the major plot so proceed with caution.
---
The only explanation I have for this is December Holiday.
I think Gaster wants to find a way to confront the "game"s creator, using the player's behavior, to try to stop the inevitable Roaring that will crash the ""fictional"" Dark Worlds into the ""real"" Light World
And keep the end of the world from happening.
“For extra stuff, look at the reply’s of this comment.”
saw the video, that isn't gaster lmao its just an unused sprite
@@EmiMakesStuff "also the same man appears in a sound test room"
_No?_ the sound test room is a text-based menu-
@Golder06 You got it mixed up.

I've always interpreted Sans smiling as him having smiling depression and trying not to drag his brother down by his fears of knowing about the nature of this world, but that's an interesting theory! (also, I'm glad you're gaining a fanbase, you deserve it :D)
Ngl I’m very surprised a tts narrated video engaged me so well, nice editing btw.
I’ve always believed that entry number 17 and Gaster had the Smile sound clip first, and Toby simply reused the sound later when muffet was added (she was from a Kickstarter backer)
As for the actual video… Most of your Ralsei theorising is solid, but I disagree with the idea that most Darkners don’t know about the prophecy.

It honestly makes so much sense to me, and it seems like the best explanation for why Ralsei seems "sus." I think it's more likely that he's been directed by Gaster though, not Gaster himself.
Can't wait for the reveal that Gaster is just some guy.

16:45 It's worth mentioning that on the webpage it was "appeared" (past time) while in Ralsei's lengend it's "appear" (present time which actually points to the future). That means it already happened from Gaster's point of view.
To be fair, if it was "three heroes appear to banish the Angel", the word "appear" could be read as the narrator making an assumption.

Do you ever wonder if Gaster isn’t going to appear in the story at all? Like, to the casual player, it wouldn’t make sense to tie major plot details to some scientist from the other game that barely gets mentioned at all. They would have to properly introduce him first.
To add onto Gaster being linked to the prophecy:
In chapter 1 Ralsei says the prophecy was foretold by time and space and Gaster was shattered across time and space according to a Gaster follower. I think the wording is to specific to be a coincidence.
At this point I think gaster shattered so much he IS time and space. Like he is just a part of the fabric of reality now.

Edit: that ending.

There could be some weight to the assorted Wingdings that show up in menus (aka the smile and the snowflake that were mentioned prior). Maybe it’s working towards a name, or a passcode or cypher of some kind? Maybe something to input into the ICE-E keyboard in chapter two?
Admittedly, I’m not sure if there’s any more examples of Wingdings that stick out that way in Deltarune. It really is a strange coincidence ^^;

Smiles are connected to determination in a sense. While not every determined being smiles, the fact that Chara, Flowey, and basically all the Amalgamates have smiling sprites, and the fact that the battle notification is a smile in No Mercy seem to indicate that determination is just like, associated with this stuff.

I think the most important/interesting thing about your theory of gaster telling ralsei stuff is that, in chapter 2, ralsei doesnt know what being ralsei is like, implying that he's either using a façade or that he hasn't been enough around people to know what his personality's like
I want to use the second option I provided to ask this: if ralsei has never met anyone before Kris and Susie, how does he know about the profecy? There aren't any libraries in castle town. How does he know that darkners get turned into statues when in other dark worlds? He would have needed to go to other dark worlds first with other darkers to know that. But that has already been asked by the fandom enough, so I'll provide another, more interesting question:
*How does he know he's a prince of the dark?*
Royalty needs people to rule under in order to be considered royalty, but he has no subjects, and more importantly, how does he know he's a *prince*? In history, there have been countless kids that have been titled kings and queens, but that has only happened because their parents died and they didn't have any older silblings to take over. But ralsei is still a prince
*Where's the king?*
oh shit. it would make sense for "the king of the dark" to be Gaster 😳
I wouldn't worry about a King of the Dark
I would worry about the fact the Prince of Darkness is another title for Satan

Even though his design incorporates aspects of Kris’ childhood like the crayon and the horns, I don’t think Ralsei has an actual physical light world object as his base.
When Lancer turns to stone, Ralsei says that only the Grand Dark Fountain’s “pure darkness” can restore him, implying Ralsei is unaffected because he himself is “pure darkness”
The only other foreign darkner that is unaffected by the Cyber World is the original starwalker, who doesn’t have a light world counterpart despite never leaving Kris’ pocket from the school to the library. This seems to imply that he too is “pure darkness.”
The original starwalker‘s entire presence in chapter 2 feels like Toby explicitly trying to demonstrate this to us.
@Dragoonsoul7878
than why does someone like ralsei have less hope than susie?
There is a leitmotif of Happy town on Welcome To The city!! Its very dificult to catch but its there, that 3 notes play after some melodies from the song!!
“Why yes you delicious little apple”
A phrase I shall now use till the end of my days
Why does seam the shopkeeper and gaster have VERY VERY similar face features?
Is gaster hiding as seam? Is that why seam jevil used to be friends? Why would he need dark shards that have the ability of looking into different worlds?
This dude is probably better then game theory
i used to watch Game Theory and honestly i can say that this guy is more enjoyable to watch
They are different, Game Theory is more like a well researched topic that they explain to you and HalfBreadChaos is more like making real theorys, where you go discovering new things every second, so it's more relatable and fun
@Nobody Well I wouldn't say terrible... Because I don't really remember them well

Just because you see a smile, doesnt mean you know whats underneath!
A Smile is a valuable tool my dear, It inspires your friends, keeps your enemies guessing and assures that no matter what comes your way youre the one in CONTROL.
