Both Viren and Aaravos are dark magicians and oppose the main Dragon Prince characters by working together. So why fans love Aaravos and why fans hate Viren? Viren has an amazing story and is written with such great talent... Aaravos has an AMAZING voice actor and is written eh... But then again, he's got an amazing voice actor and accidently made half of the fandom question their sexuality. That's pretty impressive.

Don't hate Viren as a villain. In fact I think he's a very grounded villain. He even reminds me of several "villains" within our own history. How many of us have fallen into the trap of vague idealism? It's like saying "I'm fighting for world peace", which is great but ultimately means nothing. It's too easy of a temptation to twist a vague yet noble goal into a mask to hide your own selfish ambitions.
He wanted the princes dead because they would get in his way of making decisions they way he wanted, which was hidden behind the mask of "they would make weak decisions and would jeopardize the future of humanity".
I have this feeling that the creators are building Viren in this way so he can have some kind of selfless sacrifice redemption moment. (It's just a gut feeling, I could be completely wrong).
That said I LOVE Aravose as a villain, because 1. I just love to look at him, 2. He's charming, 3. We know next to nothing about him, 4. Callum. I like many who watch this show am a fan of ALTA are intrigued to see the development of Callum learning magic, anticipating him to learn more. He has accomplished 1/6 of what Aaravos has, which makes me extremely curious to see the interaction between these two characters, and how Aaravos is going to be defeated. Aaravos is great villain to bounce off of Callum.
I like both Aaravos and Viren as villains and characters, but Viren definitely gets most of my hate because he's an abusive father with corrupt morals who gaslights his own son and hits Ezrans pet (Bait). Those are all very relatable qualities for us in the real world. We haven't seen Aaravos do that much yet, so he's mostly an intriguing (and hot xD) fantasy villain, far from being as despicable as Viren has become through his actions.

I thought Aaravos would be the direct antagonist to Zym, and that it would be him who defeats Aaravos in the end. The show is called The Dragon Prince after all.
You know I actually like Viren, his story is so well written and is definitely in my top 5 of TDP characters.
Aaravos is my fav cause I never liked humans but even while I like him so much cause he is a lil bit like Sauron I also like Viren so much and I cannt understand why you should hate one of these so welllwritten charakter's...

I actually love Viren as a character. I love how he gets lost between Jafar and Jon Snow; how his complex psychology between lust for power and abnegation makes him so compelling to watch. Just the scene where he yells at his reflection is brilliant because it subverts the classic "Mirror on the wall who's the fairest of them all" : months of unsuccessful attempts to fail to discover the mirror's secrets, plus not being able to save so many people he loved, actually got him to associate his own face with the very idea of failure.
Actually, I think he suffers from a white-knight syndrome.

Hmmm I don’t really know about other people but my reason for hating Viren but loving Aaravos is because Viren is a realistic villain, he’s emotionally manipulative, he gaslights, yada yada. He reminds me of my own parents. He’s very well written but he hits too close to home. Aaravos is manipulative but he’s more fictional and outlandish. I don’t know how to say it well but that’s my reasons. Plus Aaravos is pretty and Viren isn’t as pretty which doesn’t help Virens case.

both are great characters. Viren is not your typical flat out evil guy since he was shown to do good. It's more like a slow descent into evil over the time.
What makes me hate Viren is how he abuses the trust of his children, gaslights Soren, hits Bait, brands "traitors" with badges,... ^^ All of those are real life things that hit me hard emotionally. His consistently bad choices despite good intentions also don't help.
Aaravos is hot, I admit that helps, but he rarely does things that would make me hate him. He manipulates Viren - not good but who cares, we hate that guy anyway. He kills people. I've never experienced that myself (only in video games and movies) and would assume that it's the same for most viewers. So that also doesn't affect me strongly. Aaravos' intentions are mysterious, so we can't even scream at him for being blind and making stupid decisions.
Now, who would cause more negative emotions? A mysterious big bad evil guy in a fantasy story or a horrible, corrupt father who also hits pets?
I have no particular issue with the protagonists of this series, but I really want Aaravos to take the piss out of them.
Aaravos wants freedom. I don't see him as a villain because he is a startouch elf, they are a long lived race but stand apart from most preferring to watch the weaving of the world's tapestry. Aaravos I feel wants to help cause chaos or change, simply to be able to watch it happen and liven up a life that has become monotone to him.

@@Fishj659 Across the board, most elven species that people write up or put in shows/movies are long lived. Startouch elves in particular can live upwards of 5000 years, and as such are extremely rare, only 1 being born every several generations.Once a certain age is reached, most species become numb and isolated toward society, standing apart from others. Look up the Startouch Elven wiki on the dragon prince wiki website. I believe Aaravos is a very chaotic neutral being, does everything for his own benefit and curiosity. He's not evil per say, plus he was trapped in a mirror for who knows how long by himself. That would drive anyone at least a little crazy. I don't want an argument, i was just stating an opinion in my post above.

I just like aaravos cos he’s so mysterious and i love the design of his character and he mastered all six primal sources of magic and he just says he was trapped in the mirror for centuries and doesn’t say why who doesn’t love not knowing stuff and that cliffhanger where his little bug pal spins itself into a larvae and grows
I think with that last point, you hit the nail on the head. Sure, Aaravos commands attention with his charisma and pretty design, but that's just scratching the surface. I believe people are drawn to Aaravos because, despite the fact that he is locked in a prison, it feels like he is very much in control during every scene he's in. While we still don't know a lot about him, it's clear he knows what he wants and he's not afraid to go after it. He's strategic and smart --- knowing when to push ahead and when to pull back --- and we know him to be one of the most powerful creatures alive. I think many fans have also deduced that there's more to his story than meets the eye. Based on what we've learned about him thus far, it's likely that he's not just your typical power-hungry villain, but potentially a fallen hero with a vendetta against those he feels have wronged him. And that right there makes him pretty compelling (The writers could certainly turn this idea on its head and reveal that he was evil the whole time, but Aaron Ehasz really seems to like character complexity, so I'm not convinced it will be that simple).
Viren, on the other hand, is pretty much just a normal guy who is messing with forces he doesn't fully understand. He's arrogant and seems to BELIEVE he has everything under control --- when we as audience members know that isn't the case, and that he will either be corrupted or be disposed of by Aaravos when it's most convenient. Viren is a fascinating character, and quite a well-written one in my opinion, but I think, as you said, Viren is lying to himself on some level. He wants to think he's not only in control, but doing what he has to do for the good of humanity --- but as time goes on, that starts to feel more and more like an excuse to just accumulate more power. And the fact that he cannot be honest with himself about his own motivations and limitations, I believe, is what makes him generally less likable than Aaravos.
Also, I wanted to point out something else worth noting. Some of Viren's bad deeds are a lot more personal than Aaravos's. For example, Viren kind of treats his kids like trash, and he manipulates them frequently to achieve his own ends. And viewers tend to frown on this kind of behavior --- more so than that of a character like Aaravos, who has so far on screen only killed a bunch of random people the audience doesn't care about. I'm sure that could also be a contributing factor.
I truly believe those who hate Viren do so solely because of how he treats others' feelings and opinions: that is, he doesn't care at all -he thinks he knows what's best and that's it. And unironically that IS the reason he's a villain. The whole "war with Xadia" part is just reasonable given the context not only Viren, but every character in the show grew up in. To put it simply, Viren simply internalized the chains of history Harrow told Callum about in the letter...but at heart, he truly believes he's doing the right thing, that he's the ONLY ONE who cares about said right thing, and that's why he ends up going to Aaravos for help. He tried to convince the council, and it didn't work; the pentarchy didn't listen to him, so in what I truly believe was, to him, desperation, he turns to the one person he knows may oppose a threat to Xadia. And even before trusting Aaravos, he attempts doing research, which just doesn't give him any information whatsoever. He's just kind of forced between putting his pride aside or a shot in the dark, and eventually finds himself being completely manipulated by Aaravos without even noticing -because he doesn't know what to do, just that his heart and his mind are in (what he believes to be) the right place. That's why he went to Aaravos in the first place.
Power isn't Viren's purpose, but rather his Achilles heel and that's why he's an exceptionally believable villain.
Okay, I've thought some more about this, and I think I know some explanations:
the lesser reason is that Aaravos has shown to have a sense of humour and being light-hearted at times. That makes him more of a pleaseant person, unlike Viren, who constantly takes himself way too seriously.
Now for the main reason: Aaravos has been built up as this great person who has done amazing things for humans. That makes us see him through rose tinted glasses; we imagine he's good because we want him to be. It would be devastating to learn that someone who helped so many was secretly horrible this entire time.
The reason we judge Aarovos and Viren by double standards is the scale of their villainy. Aarovos's motives and end goals are unclear, but it's probably something on a larger, world or cosmic scale that we don't feel as intimately. We know he does or tries horrible things along the way - like trying to kill the Dragon Prince and killing many, many, many Sunfire Elves - but it doesn't feel as real because of the scaling. Meanwhile, Viren does some evil stuff that we find relatable - he gaslights his children, he's a vain narcissist, he pushes people around him to take immoral actions, he plots to take power, he tries to kill children, and he does kill animals. It's like comparing the abusive father who beats his kids with a King who plots to invade another country - one is a visceral gut punch while the other is more abstract and we can even come up with justifications.
Also, he's pretty and he has THAT VOICE. Just, dayum.
My boyfriend and I are watching The Dragon Prince together and my very first theory on why Aaravos is who he is is what he and I are going with and joke about a lot.
What is known: Aaravos very smart, old, powerful, and hella trapped and pissed off about it.
The idea: He's reeeeaaally fucking board in his pretty prison and is just excited that there is someone to talk to. It's a pity it's a human but humans are dumb so let's have some fun and see what kind of doom we can create. It'll be fun to watch. Why not mess with this human thusly and if we happen to get dragon revenge and/or freed then double points! Woot! If not, then, meh, it was fun while it lasted.
Basically, Aaravos be trollin and that's what my boyfriend and I are going with and it brings us much giggles.
The point is that we barely know anything about him other than
1. hes evil
2. he has a charismatic and weirdly charming personality.
Therefore we can just kinda headcanon whatever we want on him.
DUDES, HIS VOICE!!! The first intro in the series is in Aaravos’ voice so when we finally hear it coming from his face(which is a wholeordeal by itself) it’s rings familiar. As well as it being deep and pretty.
I didn't even know people disliked Viren. He is a great antagonist, someone with good principles and intentions but an extremist. He would do anything to fulfill his vision of a free humanity.
I like Aaravos, but as like a warning label, he is a perfect example of just because someone seems well mannered and perfect doesn't mean they're a good person. I think Aaravos is in dnd terms going to fall closer to the Chaotic Evil side of things, evil for the sake of it.
I also like Viren, he could be a very interesting study to see how quickly ambition and a sense of self-importance can lead to evil acts in the name of something you deem good.
aaravos has honestly such a complicated history if you think about it. I just wanna know everything around him because to this point we still don't really know if he'd good or bad. A the creators said, he's complicated

I like all the villains in the show.
They all have different aspects on why they’re evil for different reasons.
Viren: is literally the embodiment of corruption of one morals and values.
Clodea: doing evil things out of love, and trying to save the people she cares about even if it means she dies in the process.
Aaravos: a cunning character, who does not yet show his motives, but clearly you can tell they’re not good.
All three villain types are very popular, and the fact that they’re all trying to go to the same goal makes it even more fun to watch them.
Now, I will say one thing Viren had said that he wanted to settle down and live his meaning of life with his daughter I was actually was almost proud. But then Claudia slaps him in the face. Lol
I love Viren for idk why. I mean. I hate him but he's my fav character. He is interesting! And I think he should get a redemption or something. Aaravos is just annoying and just sits in a mirror. Eh. Also, not my type xd
So, I’ve rewatched dragon prince twice in a row now just to figure out virens psychology. He is such a great character but I can’t fully figure out his motive. Is it that he wants power in terms of authority or magic? Or is it just that his curiosity from the mirror and dark magic got out of control to a point where he’s no longer in control of even himself? I think it’s a mix of both.

Alot of people say it's because he's hot, and I think that's true- to a degree. Aaravos and Viren are very similar, but I think the reason alot of people don't like Viren is for two reasons. The first one being is that while Aaravos is constantly calm and collective, Viren gets hot headed and throws a tantrum when he doesn't get his way- they're both manipulative and power hungry, but it's easier to see Viren as the entitled snob he is, but I bet we'll eventually see Aaravos throw a fit too, eventually. Also, the second thing that makes him more unlikeable is the fact that he's not only someone his children looks up to, but he's someone that is MEANT to protect and guide them. Viren became unlikeable af the moment he used the affection and admiration his children have for him to bait them into his bidding. I mean, I do like Viren, I just think this may be why people like Aavaros more than him.
I'm sorry, who are these people who believe Viren had anything to do with Harrow's assassination? Nothing about the narrative supports this theory. As far as we've been shown, Viren genuinely considered Harrow to be his friend. He was literally going to sacrifice himself to save Harrow. Nothing about his actions would indicate that he only went to Harrow's bedroom to kill him in some fit of jealousy. Why even degrade himself by kneeling if that had been his goal?
Even more importantly, we are actually shown Runaan's bracelet (which is linked to Harrow's life) falling off. AFTER the battle against the guards, during which Viren would have had no opportunity to re-enter Harrow's bedroom. And Runaan certainly would have brought it up during the interrogation if the king was already dead by the time he got to him.
So, basically, even if the idea was that Viren decided to kill Harrow after Harrow insulted him, the above would still make that an illogical conclusion.

I personally love but hate Viren at the same time, as he is my favorite type of villain who has his intentions being true yet methods being skewed, I also seem to like more realistic complex characters rather than generic characters who are just for the sake of being bad. I have to say the one thing I like about this show is how they show some of the nastiest characters can also be quite sympathetic as they are quite caring towards their families (such as Runaan with Rayla, Azymondias and Zym, and Khessa with Janai. So I think that Viren does legitimately care for his daughter Claudia as he once even said "she's not an asset, she's my daughter" which I think was really heartfelt and sincere.
While with Aaravos, it almost feels like an internet phenomenon for people to thirst over him which really reminds me of what happened with other characters such as the Once-ler, Prince Sidon, Ao Bing, and even RK from Mole's World. I find that amusing in an ironic way as I am either grey ace or demisexual as I only develop crushes on people and characters if they are similar to me in some aspects yet different than me in other aspects (such as Zuko from ATLA and a few close friends of mine in school during my youth) while others just feel like an embodiment of comphet for me (especially my weird teen crushes.
Anyways, I still hope they don't make Aaarvaos a generic cartoon villain puppetmaster who is bad for the sake of being bad considering how all the other characters are quite complex in the series.
I also think its possible that viren used to be a good person and was trying to help the world, and seems so indecisive and self righteous because it is his good side fighting against the side corrupted by dark magic.
I personally love Viren and Aaravos equally, but for completely different reasons. I adore Aaravos' voice and appearance, but I admire Viren's resolve and his willingness to sacrifice anything for the sake of humanity's future. As a villain, I like Viren more since we understand him better and know his intentions are in the interest of his people.
You see, as an aro/ace I didn't care much about the voice/appearance/charm while watching. I loved Viren as a character, because of his complexity: choices, the symbolism of his appearance, relationships with the kids and the king, impulsiveness, ideas and "pragmatic nature" as he would put it. When your eyes are clouded by the sexuality of a particular person, you lose the objectiveness of your statements.
I don't hate Viren. I just...don't like him like I like (and love) Aaravos. There are some things that Aaravos has and Viren doesn't have.
Let's put it this way -
I'd choke Viren if I could
And I'd let Aaravos choke me
I love Aaravos because he's evil. But he also makes the series so much more interesting

Viren kinda reminds me of Gul Dukat from Star Trek ds9. Outwardly he wants what he says is best for everyone but inwardly a complete psychopath who wants to control everything.

You guys are way off the mark when it comes to Viren. His motivations are easy to understand, if you put yourself in his shoes. Viren actually believes that he wants humanity to prosper. You can see this if you look at what he's done and I'll list his actions in chronological order.
1. When famine hits the human kingdoms, Viren devises a plan to take the heart of an elemental lord that will stop the famine and succeeds, thus saving the kingdoms from starving.
2. When Viren sees Thunder kill Harrow's wife and nearly wipe out their company sent to take the heart, he believes that it isn't enough to just occasionally venture into Xadia to for resources. He figures out that there are monstrous threats within Xadia also need to be done away with. So he hatches a plan to kill Thunder and succeeds.
3. When the Moonshadow Elves come to assassinate Harrow, Virin comes up with a plan to save Harrow. Why? Because Viren not only regards Harrow as a friend, he truly believes this; but because Viren recognizes Harrows ability to help humanity prosper. However, his beliefs that Harrow can lead humanity are dashed when Harrow gives into his fate believing this to be a consequence of his actions. So what does harrow do, he takes over believing himself to understand what humanity needs to survive and prosper.
4. His actions towards the princes should be the most well understood. Regardless of the fact that we the viewers do see that both Calum and Ezran are wise beyond their years, Viren is correct in assuming that a child king won't have the mental fortitude to lead. So again, believing that he has the tools to lead humanity, hatches a plant to have the princes killed.
I could name more, but this comment will be too long if I do. What makes Viren a great villian is that true to life, many of those that believe they can, "protect," humanity or are doing things, "for the greater good," can't forsee the consequences of their actions. Every consequence that Viren is dealing with is of his own making. But like many real life tyrants, he doesn't see this.

I personally love Aaravos because he is a intelligent and charismatic villain, there are too many villains who are simple minded and boring to watch. (Not saying that is bad because sometime you just need a villain to hate) he just has a sort of mystery about him and he is just fun to watch.

I don’t hate Viren, but I sure as hell like Aaravos better.
The main/meme reason is well, pretty privileges. Aaravos is an extremely attractive character. But, me personally, I find Viren attractive as well. They are both very pretty, but Aaravos wins that.
Others reasons Aaravos is more liked is because, though we have been told stories of Aaravos being a manipulator, we’ve only ever seen him manipulate Viren, and possibly Callum (can’t 100% remember correctly on Callum’s part).
Viren, on the other hand, has used his status to become king after king Harrow died, manipulated his son to kill the princes (failed attempt) then gaslit his son to think he miss heard him. Overall just treated Soren horrible.
Viren has also hurt other lovable characters, such as Runaan and attempted (succeeded to some extend) to kill every other Kingdoms rulers and blame it on the Elves. Much more to go off of when it comes to that.
Aaravos, has killed people, but most of them were unknown to us, or not well known by us.
And, If we add theories on to this. It’s theorized that Viren never had good intentions, and that Aaravos always had good intentions. (But theories such as this could just have become due to people loving Aaravos.)

or Aaravos either. Personally, I believe Lord Viren is good somewhere but he was easily manipulated by Aaravos. Maybe in part four Lord Viren will get a redemption who knows
I don't really hate Viren. I just get mad that people still trust him. Why ? Everyone has seen what he's done by now and yet he still has support. I especially don't understand why Claudia still trusts him after what he put her and her brother through.
As for Viren's motivation, I think he's just after power and world domination. Maybe he was an idealist at some point but he has long since been corrected
I actually love Viren, and I'm not actually sure people hate him so much as pity him. He feels like the deck is stacked against him, and all humans (he is probably in fact wrong about this, but this is clearly the way he sees things). His rejection of morality is very understandable: if still definitely corrupt and bad. If people do hate him, maybe it's because his story hits too close to home. We've all been in the same boat as Viren.
As for why people love Aaravos, it's really very simple: he believes himself to be in the right, wholeheartedly. Confidence is attractive. Fans look for ways to explain (if not justify) his actions because he is clearly justifying his actions to himself.

I hate Viren bc hes evil, but i end up warming up to characters once i learn about them being in a relationship. (Canon or otherwise [not completely canon in dis case]) so im cool with most of the characters. I think I hate claudia shes the only character in a relationship that I never warmed up to. I was cool with her at first but then I eventually woke up and sent her to HatersTown. Population: about 5. Im also cool with Aaravos its the same deal with him as Viren, but I feel wayyyyy closer to Aaravos (like a sibling/best friend bond)

I like him, I think he's interesting. the fact that he is in some ways the typical villain -- power-hungry, scheming advisor who ends up betraying the king and taking the throne etc, but then there's elements that adds complexity like the fact that he actually seems to love the king, and he has good intentions, doing things he thinks are right, but of course also pride that makes it easy for him to justify doing fucked-up shit for the sake of the "greater good"
meanwhile, aaravos seems intriguing and sexy and all but I feel like I haven't seen enough of him to really have a strong opinion of him. which is fine, as he is supposed to be a mystery for now.
