Sun dogs are a rare occasion....it is basically a rainbow that presents itself in a two pieces. This song was written after Neil went out on a boat ride with his daughter. Sadly, she passed on.

Not very often I see these later albums and songs from Rush's 80's era reacted to, so it's really nice to see their better stuff getting some air time.
Presto is a criminally overlooked album but one of their best. Alex's guitar work sounds so ethereal and crisp. Complements Geddy's synthesiser work beautifully.
Much as I love the old school Rush from the 70's, it's their 80's synth-heavy work that lifts them above everybody else. Still rocking it but it's a very sophisticated sound with top notch production. By far their best stuff.

I noticed that too. I heard a lot of their older stuff but was so glad I am tapping out their 80's vibe. ❤️

Chain Lightning may be my favorite from this record. One of Rush's most underrated songs. That chorus flows as well as any Rush song. Flows as smoothly as Dreamline, which I think may be Rush's best song as far as lyrical flow.

Late to the game, here. This song is about an experience Neil had with his first daughter, Selena ("reflected in another source of light"/"reflected in another pair of eyes"), during an evening together rowing out on their lake to watch the sun dogs. Great song.

Having been a Rush fan for 45+ years now and listened to all their albums countless times the 2 things that still stand out are
    1) I never tire of listening to them and they still fresh
    2) no 2 albums sound the same. There is always progression either musically , lyrically or production wise.
I don't believe that the world will see their like again

A Sun Dog is alike rainbow, but only shows at two points. This song was written when Neil and hi s daughter when out on a boat together.

This is an exceptional album - brought to bear the zenith of skill and electronics that are blended well with acoustics and the raw power, all with next level lyrics.

Neil was a walking dictionary and just a very smart person! I miss him so much and I never personally new him! How many people can you say that about!!!!

  • @trenken
    @trenken 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Neil liked to use weather phenomena as a metaphor for people, life, etc. Its really taking the idea of how lightning splinters off into smaller arms of energy, and they all look the same, but also totally different patterns. A metaphor for how people are all foundationally the same, but also very different. “Reflected in another pair of eyes” is the key line in this song. We all see and experience the same things but handle it in different ways. Our paths take us in different directions, like chain lightning.

Great stuff, TB!! Those two songs are BANGERS!! And good on Rush for consistently giving fans that one-two punch, songs 1 and 2, album after album, especially in the 80's. You could always count on them to hit you with a anthemic "keynote" song to open and then a killer follow up to keep the blood pumping! By the way, Geddy Lee OWNS on these two songs from Presto! He has a solo break -- very funky and nasty on SDT -- and then he's got those sick bass "THRUM! "- notes hitting, just before the chorus starts ("Sun Dogs fire..."), that just CRUSHES! I think he was playing the Wal Bass on this album and the playing on this album is insane! TB, you do have to do at least 1 more song on this album which would have to be The Pass. It's...it's an important, emotional song. It's one of Rush's best songs, in terms of song writing and conveying emotion and a message that stays with you. Also, if you can work in one more, I am personally a huge fan of the song "Scars". That song is a sick mix of Rock, Tribal/Electronica/Trance and Alternative Rock. It's possible that the guys were checking out Nine Inch Nails at the time they wrote that song. So, check it out!! Neil Peart is a human Drum Machine on that song!

first an ambient start to the song. Bam! no this is now the funkiest shit you've ever heard, and it's from the same guys who sing metaphorically about personified *trees*. Hold on, we're getting to the bridge of the song and, what the hell? It's now adult contemporary with massive chords, and it still works with the original riff? Hold on, a sizzlin' bass solo? THE BASS IS PLAYING FUNK WHILE THE GUITAR IS PLAYING HUGE AMBIENT CHORDS!! HOW DO YOU PLAY TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT GENRES AT THE SAME TIME AND HAVE IT SOUND THAT AMAZING?! WHAT IS THIS BAND?!

    Awesome man :)
A sun dog or mock sun, formally called a parhelion in meteorology, is an atmospheric optical phenomenon that consists of a bright spot to one or both sides of the Sun.... I highly recommend looking up a picture.
Chain Lightning is so beautiful. About two people sharing a special moment. How a moment can be special on its own, but reflected in someone else's eyes, the special moment continues. The Chain Lightning of sharing an experience and feeding off eachothers excitement.... haha exactly like whats going on when people watch reaction videos.
    Repond, Vibrate, Feedback, Resonate!
"Sun dogs fire on the horizon
Meteor rain stars across the night
    This moment may be brief
But it can be so bright
Reflected in another source of light
    When the moment dies
    The spark still flies
Reflected in another pair of eyes".
It is clear you (like me) love the synth era of Rush. That would be all albums from Grace Under Pressure until Roll The Bones (which is the one right after this). Roll The Bones is the last of that great synth era, but there's tons of great stuff on that and the other albums of that era for you to get to.
If you feel like checking out something off of Roll The Bones, I would recommend the title track, Dreamline, or Ghost of a Chance to start with.
Enjoying the reactions man! Few ever check out this era of Rush and even fewer like it so this has been awesome.

Neil wrote this as a result of his rowboat trips on Elora Sound with his daughter Selena. They would row out together to watch meteor storms. Sadly Selena died several years later in a car accident at the age of 19. The loss almost killed Neil. He wrote a book about his journey to recover called ”Ghost Rider.”

    • @nickavenoso7851
      @nickavenoso7851 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I remember hearing Neil talk about how he wrote the lyrics for the song. The lyrics are based off a weather report that talked about two things. Sun dogs (small prisms of light) and he said that there’s was going to be a meteor shower. So, Neil went out with his daughter to watch it from the lake. He talks about it in this video: th-cam.com/video/fmq2uClK6eQ/w-d-xo.html

So I subscribed but sat back for a few tunes, other than to tell you that the four album cycle of the synth era of Rush begins with Signals , then Grace Under Pressure, then Power Windows and culminating on Hold Your Fire.
For the record, Rush basically took off in a new direction in four album cycles. They would find a sound, hone it on the second record, develop it on the third record and put forth the full Monty masterpiece on the forth effort.
For your consideration. The first era consists of their debut RUSH. Neil comes in on the second effort Fly By Nite and the sound is no less aggressive, but more refined. Album three in the cycle, Caress Of Steel, expands on the sound and refinements and leads them to the end of their cycle with the Masterpiece 2112.
The second cycle begins with A Farewell To Kings and culminates with Moving Pictures.
Signals begins the next cycle, and Presto starts the next.
The next cycle starts with Vapor trails and ends on the highest of notes in a forty plus year career with Clockwork Angels.
Generally speaking, through much of Rush’s career, each four album cycle was capped by a live album, capturing the best of the cycle.
Enjoy the ride. The journey is long and varied, but captivating every step of the way.

@JHC I appreciate your break down of the RUSH eras. I personally would break it down into 3 record segments. The first record no Neal Peart. Total jam record (many have said Zeppelin esqe).
Fly by Night, Caress of Steel and culminating with 2112
Next would be A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres and finally Permanent Waves
Moving Pictures, Signals and Grace Under Pressure. My favorite three record offering. Moving Pictures in my opinon is where the "synth" era starts.
I won't cover the whole lineage. The live record after every 4 records isn't exactly accurate as they started putting out a live record practically after every tour starting with the Grace Under Pressure tour (although they didn't release GUP Live until later down the road).
Anyway I think we both have the same mindset that RUSH did have distinct eras. Cheers 👍🎸🍻🎶

@@tonebonetelevision disclaimer... that guitar solo is 100% Alex with awesome whammy bar technique, it's not recorded backwards. You wouldn't hear the pick notes normal like that. It is very "Are you Experienced" by Hendrix wich had both forward and backwards guitar and drums and bass. Great tune by the way. I do understand why anyone would think that. That is straight up Alex being avant gard Jazz/Fusion over a simple groove and Neil Peart's off beat high tom tom hits and typical Neil Peart fill on Tom's and hi hat...

Have you heard *The Warning* ? They are 3 sisters from Mexico, now 20, 18, and 15 years old. Their cover of Metallica’s Enter Sandman went viral in 2014 (21+ million views). They have an EP and 2 indie albums out and just signed a 5-record deal with Lava/Republic. This is Sinister Smiles, from their Queen of the Murder Scene concept album, a girl’s descent into murder and madness: th-cam.com/video/Lh2eY0pe9X0/w-d-xo.html

But on this entire album, the lows were not adequate!

I just wish the production of this album was stronger. Its really lacking bottom end and weight to it. Great songs and a nice darker change for them from their mid-80s kinda soaring positive happy melodies in every song but crappy production.

Carl Gibbons, when you step away from the MSM, you can find the truth. If your not following along the Dominion voting machines have been rigging elections for years. Venezuela’s communist regime has been running it for years. It’s cost Bernie Sanders against Hillary for 2016. And is very evident here in 2020. Dig into these issues, don’t let them feed you this garbage. Socialism is at the door, you don’t want to let it in.

"I, the Jury" is a book by Ayn Rand. I haven't read it. Let's be blunt: I shan't ever read it...
