Dear Jim, I found huge comfort from your channel as the world turned upside down. With your guidance as a first time gardener last year I fed my babies my own sweetcorn (hit and miss like you warned!) tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes, spuds, shallots (not worth the effort, fiddly) peas and runners. I turn to you again as I look towards my second year of growing. Thank you for being such a comforting and educational force. You are affectionately known to my friends as Veg Grandad xx

I follow your channel and planted carrots in buckets last year.
    It worked a treat.
But I was curious...I decided to leave one bucket growing to see if I could leave them in the ground until January...with the idea of enjoying summer grown in the toughest month.
Last week I pulled some out and they were absolutely perfect...the most carroty carrots ever.
I will do the same again this year and save a bucket for my Xmas Dinner.
It may also be worth me mentioning....I live alone and can't eat a bucket full in one go...so I gently lift a couple of carrots at a time and it works a treat.
You share your wonderful learning with us...I wanted to share mine with you x

You HAVE to keep the seeds wet the entire time until they germinate. You let them dry out for a nano second, they quit on you.

I love this Fast Start! Thank you so much. Also, I'm an American. I was watching and heard myself saying several times, "Come on now, hurry up, I've got stuff to do." But after the third time I said it I thought, "Why? Why should he hurry -- isn't that one of the blessings of gardening, the timefulness of it?" So I deliberately went back to the beginning and watched the whole thing in real time, and enjoyed every second of it. :) Now, as soon as I finish typing this, I'm going to go start my winter crop of carrots in a few containers of wet tissue with a calm spirit, grateful for your sweet instruction. Thank you so much! I'm hoping that you're NOT getting comments from impatient folks like me, but if you have/do, please ignore them!

This is a valuable technique for all kinds of seeds. It's particularly useful for older seeds or ones from questionable sources to make sure they're viable before you devote growing space to them. (remember that packet you got from China?)
I learned it from you and use it all the time. I think it works for all seeds, even the ones that don't like transplanting as long as you're gentle and don't let the root get very long. If you catch it just at the beginning there should be no difference from sowing in soil.

I just planted two pots of carrots using this method. Couple of tips... (1) Germinate a lot more than you need because you want to be able to plant out the pot in one go so you want a sufficient number germinated. (2) don't use those carrot blend seed mixes... They germinate at different rates so you will be on the job for a few days until you fill out the pot.
Overall, it is a bit of a labor of love, so need some good eyesight and steady hands to do this method. But if it works, it is well worth it! Thanks for sharing this fun and useful video!

It was worth going to Leicester Square, London at dusk just to see the Starlings wheeling around. Looked like shoals of fish.
Many thanks for the advice and links.

Having a cup of tea in the garden and this happened just a few feet away. Luckily I had my camera close by. A closer look and in slow motion Starlings are so iridescently beautiful. Jim.

No he's not Scottish it's a northern England accent you can hear. As I am from Yorkshire I should know where it's from but it can be tricky, definitely North England though same place as chubby brown is my guess.
North Yorkshire area (Middlesbrough and redcar) best guess 👍🇺🇸🇬🇧

Last October planted seeds in big tub, having read about overwintering them in Greenhouse. They were ok but have taken them out side and cleaned up the top mould. Fed them and they look like it’s going on growing time. Took out some for spacing,ok taste and soup.

Thank you. The seeds are so small!! I tried a salt shaker once, also a paper towel slice. Using a damp match stick is great!!
We do larger tomato seeds with this method. They are sprouted in a sunny window in 2 days!
