@HomeGrownVeg I want to germinate my seeds the same way you germinated them in tissue but when i go to plant the fully germinated speouted seeds im wanting to plant each one into a small planter about 3 inches wide and then once they are sprouted to about 4 inches tall im wanting to replant each of those sprouted seeds directly into the ground is that a okay thing to do or will it shock the plant to much if i move it once more after the germinated sprout is planted into soil and about 4 inchs tall! Pretty much im wanting to grow them straight in the ground after germinating them in tissue but im afraid they would be to small to grow in the direct outside elements which is why im thinking of adding the step of letting them grow a bit bigger before sticking them out in direct elements! I live in montana thank you for such a good depth video!
3rd year my husband has followed your method - very successful. He grows 49 carrots in each 12" square pot - has 6 pots so plenty of home grown carrots that taste fantastic. He uses flat head tweezers to set the seedlings.
I started my carrot seeds 10 days ago on very damp paper towel and they germinated in 6 days. I have now transferred 36 into a pot and yesterday the tiny plants emerged. Looking forward to enjoying my own carrots here in Canada. Thank you, just love your video's, your accent makes me so homesick.
This is a genius idea! I'm so glad I stumbled upon you while scrolling through TH-cam. You've inspired me to give parsnip growing another chance. I tried years ago when I lived in far northern NH with only a 90 day growing season. I planted the seeds under a board and would check them every day. After probably a month a few seeds popped up but with so little summer left, they weren't able to be pulled until the following spring. I think I got 3 parsnips. I never grew them again...until now...until I found you. 4 days after putting the carrot and parsnip seeds between the damp paper towels, I saw signs of germination. Incredible. It's now the end of July and Im now living in Midcoast Maine so I've gained a bit longer growing season. I've also decided to attempt growing my garden in grow bags this year for the first time. 10, 15 and 20 gallon bags. I harvested the bag of carrots a couple of weeks ago and started a new bunch in the same bag hoping to get a second harvest before our first frost in October. I wish there were a way to attach the photo of that first batch of carrots. I had to laugh. Many of them looked like people with extra appendages and such if you know what I mean :-). They were quite the sight! I'm wondering if I waited too long to get them into the soil. Maybe I disrupted the tiny root. A few of the germinated seeds had started to attach to the paper towel by the time I planted them. Anyway, I'm looking forward to what (or who :-) ) I pull out of the parsnip bag when the time comes. Anyway, You're my new hero. I love these videos. You really have inspired me. Thanks. And if there's a way to attach a photo here, I'll gladly send along that colander full of the craziest looking carrots you've ever seen!
I think you are able to email me. I have a glut of parsnip seeds and would gladly give you some. They are biennial. They are also very, very tall. I will have to plant mine at the back of a garden sapce in the future.
Warmth is no issue here in Texas, but it's so dry here that the upper few inches of soil dries out so quickly that it affects seed germination. I always had poor success with carrots. But I tried this method last fall (carrots are a 'winter' crop here) after watching some of Jim's videos, and it worked! Largest carrot harvest I've ever had! Will 100% be pre-germinating carrot seeds this way from now on
"Frightening the carrots' 😂 I'm going to try your method. 🤞 Update - I tried your method and mostly it worked. Not 100% but at least it was more than half of them so a good result for me. They are safely ensconced in their little stations so 🤞 for the next step! Thanks for the tip. 🥕
I agree Jim. We're so anxious to get our gardens started that sometimes we start too early. I am certainly guilty of that! I planted lots of seeds and starts outdoors some weeks ago when it was warm. It was very deceptive weather (even for the weatherman who assured us all chance of frost was over! Ha!) Some are growing and thriving and some are either slower coming up or not going to. We shall see! I probably will start some more inside using your method. It's a sure go! Funny thing is I did have to go get my specs! Hope all's well with you, yours, and the pups. Take care.👵😊🌱🥕🥕
Hello Melody. Just had a week of cold windy weather just when we don't need it. Trying to keep stuff in the greenhouse and trying to get my tomatoes in at the same time and there's not enough room in there to 'swing a cat'. Jim
I have loads of chilli seedlings from the paper towel method and I have been potting up all week with them. Two nights ago I have put yellow solar carrots and purple carrots on paper towel in plastic box. I have also done beetroot and a few other veg seeds. Last week I did the same method with carnation seeds and wow they took in three days. They are now in seed trays and doing great. I thought they would have been difficult but they are easy. So plenty of bag filling to be done now.
@@HomeGrownVeg thank you. Last night did a paper towel box with celery seed, parsnip and mooli. The okra I also pre-germinated in a box and I have potted up and they are doing ok I am just waiting for the seed head to drop off. Have a good week and thank you for good channel and info.
over here i find a lot of bad seeds bought a pack of Squash seeds it had two seeds that was good, the rest was all flat and no need to put in the ground ... and that's the way it is ....as always a good fun informative video

Nice one Jim, thanks for the tips.
Hi there, I’m a very novice gardener and I’m going to try carrots for the first time this year. Can I ask you a couple of questions- everyone else might think they’re dumb arsed questions but I don’t care! Do you put drainage holes in your 10 inch buckets and what sort of sand are you using? It looks very fine? Thank you & I love your laidback videos! X
Hello Jane. The sand I am using is builders sharp sand and yes I put holes in my buckets and its a legitimate question to ask. Check out this video : th-cam.com/video/u372Y2EkxKw/w-d-xo.html
@@janeremnant430 I'm tempted to take a bucket out the yellow bin down our road, the council never use it, the lids broken and there are plants growing in it every summer
Defenetly going to try this. About the buckets, do they have to be food grade? They probably should but it's hard to get food grade buckets where i live, but those regular black 10 litre buckets would be easy to come by.
Hello Lukrezia. Over the last 10 years I have eaten, Carrots, Onions, Beetroot, Potatoes, Leeks and Parsnips all grown in these Ex cut flower water buckets. There is nothing on the bucket that tells me they are 'food grade' whatever that is. I rest my case. Jim.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I am going to try this method and have some carrot seeds germinating now! Also great excuse to get a pizza after all my hard work!
I'm germinating carrot seeds on damp paper towel and they look just like yours. Was wondering if you've ever planted germinated carrot seeds into deep trays to grow on until you can transplant into the garden? Also have you ever tried doing the same with red beets?
@@tanyav8775 How did it work out? I am considering something similar, but might just keep them in buckets indoors until I can move them out. Going to be snug to move around in the livingroom though.
I have germinated carrot seeds just like you have done in a takeaway tub. However, they are now approximately 15 mm tall with small green seed leaves. Should I bury them completely or try to leave the leaves protruding above the surface?
I planted a bucket of carrot seeds...I thought it had been too long and they weren't germinating, so I sprinkled a bunch of lettuce seeds on the top. I'm sure you can guess what happened a few days later...
First out doors planting never came up, I assumed I was too early. Now I have had seeds in a take out pot on damp kitchen roll in a good warm spot. 2 weeks and nothing ☹️ I'll have to buy more seeds, what a shame😁. These were my dad's so about 3/4 years old minimum.
Have now tried this. Potted the carrots into the buckets yesterday. But much of the time the root didn't want to come away from the paper and few came away with a full root. Will have to see what percentage recovers. Was wondering if the wet paper was substituted for wet sand, that this problem would go away.
I've copied this method and am getting a full pot of carrots most times - so, thanks. One of the things I do now is use a very cheap and flimsy tissue.
They were kept in the light. The white tails are the root immerging first. The shoot is the last thing to immerge from the seed. Just right for transplanting. Jim.
@Home Grown Veg thanks. I'm planning on doing this myself when the weather gets a little better here. Never really grown much before apart from potatoes so I am never 100% sure I'm doing things right.
Hello Diane. There's nothing worse than waiting 2 / 3 / 4 weeks and you get no or poor germination in your bucket. With every seed germinated before it goes in the bucket your in with a chance of the "Mother Load" Jim.
Was thinking, if you attach very short dowel rods to where you want each hole to be on your template, and glue them on, then you could press them into the soil and create all 37 holes at once. Would probably be a pain to make, but would save time and tedium for all the planting going forward.
@Home Grown Veg Loved your video, you have solutions that most videos don't address. I will have to try this! Was too intimidated before, but you make it look easy.
