Fantastic info! I love how you keep these simple and basic but always include the “why” with every step of the process. Love your channel.

Thanks brother, this is a rather unusual technique but after 2 years of frustrating failures I'll try just about anything and your logic sounds quite reasonable.

Try it and let me know if it work, if you plant on berms, make the top flat and then use cardboard with bricks. Hopefully you will be carrot rich this spring!!

@@DaisyCreekFarms Yep, that's the plan. I'll also try a "micro-greenhouse" cover (foil stretched over a wooden frame) in a separate spot, as last time I got a good carrot harvest I remember that it was a warmer than usual spring around here.

🥕🥕🥕 I agree, I've had pack of the carrots but I always FAIL so I've hesitated to plant them... until now, Jag gives a cardboard-and-coir hint!!

Jag, your videos are the best. I have a question re soil for root vegetables: I am in zone 9 (Europe) and my soil is high in clay - no matter how I dig, a drop of rain makes the soil compact, and this means root vegetables are a no-go and also affects the growth rate of all other vegetables. Is there any amount of compost realistically able to improve the soil composition? Are raised beds with externally purchased soil the only viable option here? Thanks so much and stay safe.

Will peat moss work instead of coconut coir? Your videos are very useful!! Thank You.

Digging soil makes more weeds because you bring fresh seeds to the surface. Check out Charles Dowding no dig garden videos. Digging destroys the soil biology… that’s what feeds the plants, not fertilizer. Soil biology requires a living root in the ground as much as possible, and mulch 100% of the time. These things will make “loose” soil. I haven’t dug or tilled my garden for thirteen years. The only “digging” I do is to aerate the soil with a broadfork, and that is only for carrots.

Would not having soil loosened up this way account for my meager radish success too? It's been a problem with most root crops for me so far.

1:40 just be careful dear viewer, you may dig up the seeds with the water stream. Reduce the flow of water if possible.

Never use Roundup or pre-emergent herbicide on the soil. Even if it was last year. Roundup binds to the soil until lime is used to help unbind and wash roundup away.

This is timely. My carrots germinate, but they don't form. I've tried raised beds and containers. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I'm going to try again.
