.....yes our pets are a sick lot! Why? Over vaccinations, neutering, (oh, did you think the hormones where just for decoration?) The flea spot ons, the flea collars, (imagine breathing that in 24/7,), the commercial food = low in nutrients!, the sprays in the garden, not enough exercise, airfresheners, being locked up every night for 8 hours in the laundery or garage. The fumes of washig powder and soaps, petrol fumes, paint fumes etc are a killer. Breath that in every nightThe biggest is our " food" pizza, chips, chocolate, bread, etc!
UPDATED--Dr Judy, i just found you! I have watched this video and read the comments. You are so very impressive!!! My baby, Rocco (min schnauzer) was just diagnosed with stage 2 ckd. His potassium was very low, but BUN, phos, creatine, protein, were high. I now make his food: 80% Veggies/20% Protein: 80% VEGGIES- Cabbage, Broccoli, carrots, arugula, cauliflower, Green beans are slow cooked al dente' then cooled. I then add fresh Broccoli sprouts. 20% PROTEIN- Fresh raw chicken with bones (ground small) *I interchange beef/bones with chicken/bones. Raw Green Tripe Nutritional Additives: *(most of these are combined into a tea). 1 T of tea daily. Alpha lipoic Acid, Essential amino acids, Activated charcoal, salmon oil, japanese knotweed, olive leaf extract, CQ-10, Potassium, hawthorn berry, dandelion, colostrum, parsley, echinacea, marshmallow, milk thistle, vit d3/k2, vit E, fermented vit B, and moringa Oleifera. ALL OF THESE ARE MIXED TOGETHER AFTER ALL INGREDIENTS ARE COOL. I add 2 shakes of Himalayan Pink Salt on top at each serving. Rocco has been been on this regimen for 4 days and is a new dog!!! UPDATE 2-15-24 Rocco had blood tests yesterday... For the last 2 months I have reduced some of the additives. My young vet said, Rocco is a freak of health! Blood panel still like a puppy! UPDATE 4-27-24 Rocco had another blood test and he still has the blood panel of a puppy and the energy of a greyhound!
My mini schnauzer is only 2 amd the vet just told me she was high in her kidney test, I need to learn how to feed her to improve her health I love her so much and don't want anything happening to her
@@hleticiagarcia2330 my Rocco is a mini schnauzer. You are welcome to follow the diet I created for him. You will need to assess your dog's blood panel. STOP FEEDING KIBBLE....IT IS A SLOW DEATH!
3 month old mixed breed puppy spiked creatinine to 5.9 while receiving treatment at emergency hospital. We brought him home with a 'poor prognosis.' When asked what we should feed him, the vet said it didn't matter. Very discouraging! I immediately did some research and began experimenting with home cooked foods. 4 days later, his number had dropped to 3.5! We are administering SQ fluids and antibiotic. Another week and his numbers dropped again to 2.5. He goes back tomorrow and we are anticipating an additional drop. Our miracle puppy is on the mend, very active and has also gained over 3 pounds. Thank you for the encouragement and information about healing nutritionally. I have just received your cookbook and look forward to creating more great meals for our good boy.
@@SOUR_OG Get her book and follow. We have used protein source (venison, ground turkey, salmon, or chicken livers. Veggies - just abut any. Cranberries or blueberries. Starch - varies each week - oatmeal, white rice, sweet potato, whole wheat pasta. I also make chicken and beef broth to add. Fletcher is 8 months old, weighs about 60 pounds now and shows no indication he had been so sick. Also a ton of prayer, love and fresh air. Health is holistic.
this is extremely helpful thank you. my dog just got diagnosed with kidney failure today and I want to do everything i can to keep her here for a little while 😢
this is great news for me, thanks for sharing this information, i'll try the tripe with my dog since it's available fresh in the markets, sure my pup will love it... He was recently diagnosed with kidney disease and it was under the weather last week, it's likely he has a spleen tumor but we won't operate since he's 17 and it would be madness to submit him to such treatment. Hope for the best quality of life for him. Blessings to all.
this is SO helpful. ty. I am feeding whatever my dogs wants cause she is in her end stage. this makes me feel better vs forcing her when she already feels awful. I will try tripe too.
My 16.5 year old cat was diagnosed with CKD about 6 weeks ago, stage 2. She grew up in another home and was given mostly kibble. When I got her a couple of years ago I put her on ready made raw plus some very good quality wet food and her muscle mass and fur improved greatly.😊 It has been a roller coaster since her diagnosis though... 🥺 She doesn't really eat the veterinarian foods. (Who can blame her?🤪) And she went from perfectly "fine" (except for the puking ofc) to crashing and shaking bcs she just wouldn't eat the darn food. And ofc I have given her other foods then but nothing really works and when she eats her regular food she starts to puke again. 🥺 She only ate the veterinarian foods if given appetite stimulants but now she hardly does that anymore. I've been looking for a home made food that is with quality ingredients especially for cats with CKD. I found your 2 recipes but sweet potatoes, millet and turmeric are too high in oxalates and flax seeds are very estogenic. I'm after a recipe that's higher in fats instead of carbs. You talk about this in this video, that fats are better than carbs so I struggle to understand why your recipes are with carbs instead of fats? I have searched high and low for a carnivore CKD recipe for cats and I haven't found any yet....I need help quickly! If anyone knows how to put together such a recipe or where to find it, please tell me!💕
My first dog died of kidney failure at age 17. I had a cat die of kidney failure at age 14. This was back when I fed kibble and Canned. I started feeding my dog A raw diet but I still fed my cat kibble and canned. A few years later my cat got acute kidney failure, I still have no idea what caused it, it came on very suddenly like within two days But he almost died. This lead to chronic kidney failure. The vet said he didn't have much of a chance but I should take him home and feed him a special diet, we all know what company it was from, and subcutaneous fluids. From my past experiences I was a pro at subcutaneous fluids but I tried the canned special food for two days and gave it up. Since then I have fed him nothing but Raw and he is doing great. I haven't given him subcutaneous fluids in eight months. His blood levels are fine and the vet is shocked. I will never go back to kibble. I know it's hard to get cats to transition sometimes but it's worth it.
What all do you feed your pets as far as the raw diet goes? I just can’t get my dog to eat liver even lightly cooked. I don’t think we’ll be able to transition her.
@@benicio1967 try grinding all the ingredients together. And they don't need a lot of liver so don't overdo it. But if it's all mixed in together they can't pick and choose. I start with a basic mix of 80 1010 also meet, bone, and liver and other secreting organs. Then I add some veggies to it, maybe some green tripe, sometimes I feed canned sardines or canned mackerel as a meal. If you can afford it buy something like Stella and chewies or some other brand of a premade raw mix. If your dog will eat canned, slowly mix in the raw with the canned until the dog is eating only raw. My dog isn't big on liver, if I just throw down a chunk of liver she may or may not eat it. But if it's all mixed in she eats it. That goes with basically every organ that I fed, liver, kidney, sweetbreads, lung etc. it might take a little bit to transition but I bet you'll be able to get there. I transitioned my cats, it took two months but now they eat raw like crazy. I feed turkey, chicken, pork, beef, duck, fish like sardines and mackerel, occasionally tuna, green tripe. Frozen, canned, or puréed veggies like broccoli, green beans, sweet potato, apples, blueberries. Occasionally peas and carrots. Some people say feed fruits and veggies others don't. It's kind of up to you.
Thank you Dr. Morgan for this video! I make my dogs homemade food. We just found out our adopted dog has heart murmur and also his K+ is 3.3 and BUN is 42. He's probably around 9 years old. Vets suggested lower but better protein diet. I was a little skeptical on the lower protein part and went online to research and found different information. I switched grains to barleys and added more vegetables to the porprotion. I'm glad I ran into this video before I modify the protein level. I'll continue with the same amount protein and monitor the blood results. PS. We are also trying to test at lower dosage of Lasix. :)

Hi Judy, my 5 year old Luna was diagnosed with kidney failure. The vet did not do any X-rays, has not obtained a blood pressure reading, and recommended dialysis with a specialist. Day 1 they hooked her with IV as she was severely dehydrated but day 2 they stopped as her body started retaining the fluid. Her urine was green on day 1, a cloudy yellow day 2, dark yellow with blood Day 3, and has been dark yellow for 4 days now. The vet said she has a UTI in addition to kidney failure, my dog had trouble breathing due to the fluid but is breathing better now as I have been wrapping her legs like they do for lymphedema patients and performing visceral massages. She drinks a lot of water and urinates frequently. She has a decrease in appetite and eats very little food at this time. This all started Nov.7th and now it’s Nov.13. Her initial blood pane on 11/07 levels indicated: creatine 2.5, BUN 79, Phosphorus 5.5, total protein 5.7, albumin 1.8. She last had her blood panel tested on Nov. 9th and hematology results indicated: creatine at 2.3, BUN at 72, phosphorus 6.7, total protein 4.3, and albumin at 1.4, ALP at 10. All other levels are normal. In her urinalysis on on 11/10 her urine creatine was 73.4 and urine protein at 1,728.8, urine protein:creatine ratio 23.6. She is currently on anti-nausea meds, blood pressure meds, blood thinners, probiotics, antibiotics, b12 injections, eating what she can (chicken, apple sauce, rice) but she is only taking a few bites maybe 4 ounces of food every day. Today she continues retaining water but not as much as she can now breath, her urine is still dark yellow despite all the water, is semi- active as she still gets excited over short walks. I scheduled her for acupuncture as a last trial and have yet to see if it will help. Please provide your recommendations.
@judy I forgot to mention this is all acute. We believe she ate something toxic but not sure what it was as she has been healthy all her life. Please help. We’re trying everything we can. At this time we declined dialysis as we cannot afford it.

My 12 year old dog, Rocco has stage 2 kidney disease. His symptoms were lethargy, stopped drinking, and kidney infection. I looked at his lab report and corrected his defiencies. And yet a dog can not digest it, if you really want to feed your dog well , read the book of canine nutrigenomics jean dods. Yes a dog with kidney problems needs its proteine from fresch meat. This lady here is correct. A dog can proses fresh food very wel. And aging with kidney problems is not because you did something bad. Ist commen among dogs and cats. Ist how they are made. Not what we want for them, but it is in there genetics. Fresh meat is better than these vegtables, dogs can not proces them. Only herbs en meats and grains, but grains cannot with kidney problems. Hey Judy. Thanks for everything you do. I'm not sure if you could reply to this or not but I thought I'd try because I'm at wits-end at this point in time with my 11 year old Chihuahua Terrier mix (17lb dog). I had her to our regular vet because she started having a bit of a wheezing/coughing episode over the last month and asked for xrays and bloodwork. The vet, which doesn't have a cardiologist, and is only a GP, indicated that her creatine level was around 290 which indicates that her kidneys are slowly getting bad (but didn't mention kidney diease to me at all.. it wasn't until further research on my own time that I ran into this as a possibility). On my dogs X-Ray the vet said she was on the borderline of having heart disease (she has a very faint/barely noticeable murmur and slightly enlarged heart). Which again didn't help me with much basically just left me wondering. They prescribed her to 1.25mg of vetmedin 2x a day (once every 12H) but I'm paranoid to give them to her. They also prescribed me to avanti kidney plus (1 scoop a day) powder and advised me a royal canin kidney canned food diet would likely give her the best shot at a longer life. Is it fair to assume kidney disease based on such a creatine level? Any advice for somebody that doesn't have any other options for vets without having to travel 12h+ via vehicle? All of our local vets are GPs and I've had 2nd and third opinions and they haven't been very helpful. Theres a 6 month wait for her to see a cardiologoist too unfortunately.
Thank you for this video. My dog has been having protein spill in his urine for a while now but last week his levels were at 2.3. and the vet never told me about his BUN levels. She actually didn't tell me about the 2.3 level I'm assuming it's the Creatine levels until I asked. She said his workup came back fine but 2.3 is the highest it's ever been. She told me to restrict his protein but he's on the lowest amount of protein I can give him. He has very weak hind legs that tremble very often so I don't want to give him too low protein to cause muscle atrophy. He's current on Dr harvey canine health with 4oz of mix and 3 oz of protein ( ground turkey, veal, lamb b/c he has beef and chicken allergies) and Welactin omega-3. He's 53lbs (I'm working on his weight) and he's 11 yrs old. Idk what else to do to control his protein levels.
I've been making my pom mix home made wet food for a year with grass fed pork and beef, greens and rice.....her kidney level I just find out is 11.5!!! I'm in shock!!! I'm here to investigate what to do.
Stop the rice and pork. Feed RAW chicken and beef. Some greens are very high in phosphorus and not healthy. Cruciferous veggies are best for kidney disease. Bok choy being the number one health food for kidney issues. Read my post as to what I fed my dog. My 13 year old dog, Rocco now has the blood panel of a puppy. Feed a raw diet and include green tripe with low phosphorus greens. Add Alpha Lipoic Acid, phosphorus binder and fish oil. There is more, so you may want to read my post. Good luck with your furbaby.

Just found your video. Have 2 senior dogs with kidney disease/failure. I suspect our female may also have this as well per information from another one of your videos. She has had a complete change in meal time. No longer wants to eat early morning. So will try oatmeal with a bit of cinnamon.
The recipes I seen are crockpot cooked recipes. I understand that different stages are going to require certain changes.... However, with just the BUN slightly above normal and Urine came back diluted a tab as well. For precaution was told to change his diet up as he previously was on freshpet being cooked food but with synthetic vitamins etc... I previously had him on raw, so i decided to switch back to raw but now i'm hearing cooking the meals would be better due to the phosphate? Or am I overthinking this and raw still would be fine just limited? Are the meals in the yin and yang book also cooked? or are there raw meal plans?
You mentioned that you don't worry about phosphorus until about stage 4, but if cat is eating a commercial canned food or dry (god forbid), many of these companies use tricalcium phosphate which is even more bioavailable, and many pet foods are quite high in phosphorus, or the calcium is lower than phosphorus, which actually raises phosphorus even more.
@@judymorgan4241 my vet suggested that we switch to that food because my 15 yr old dog has elevated liver enzymes and her BUN is high by 8 points but her creatinine is in the normal level. Hi Dr Judy, firstly thank you for all you do, So much gratitude for all your info....you have helped our family more than you know!!! So, long story but Ill TRY to keep it as short as possible. We adopted a 7 year old deer hound about 8 months ago. We do not know his history but he has obviously not had the best life, all we know is he is an ex breeder...we suspect puppy farm from his behaviours and fears in the first few months. We had bloods and full check up done and apart from numerous other problems he was diagnosed with stage 1 kidney disease. We were instructed to put him on a kidney diet by our wholistic vet at the time...mostly white rice, potatoes and a little bit of chicken. He did terribly on this diet. After many questions regarding the diet not working for him (we kept being told to just keep persisting, he will get use to it!!) My wholistic vet finally put him on Hills Renal diet (Wholistic vet....really!!!!???) I finally switched vets for a second opinion. Bloods done by this vet showed 3rd stage kidney disease (this is in a space of 3 months) I was left wondering how this could advance so quickly?! Although they diagnosed 3rd stage KD they were concerned the blood tests did not really add up so requested a ultrasound. Ultrasound revealed he only has one kidney and was born this way. Also revealed 1st stage heart disease but Ill leave that for another time!! Prescribed Treatment was for monitoring of blood pressure and continuation of Renal kidney diet (Hills)!! This did not feel right for me and is what led me to hours of research.......This is when I found YOU!! I have purchased both of your books and have our Tali boy on your kidney diets from Yin and Yang for dogs. He is doing really well on this.....Thank you!!! So my question now is...considering our boy does not have kidney disease but only one healthy kidney should I still be following the kidney diets in your book? I am also mixing meals with the heart disease diets since that diagnoses. So I am not sure if I am heading in the right direction with this?? I love your books and U tube channel, I plan to purchase your blood test reading package as soon as I can. As much as I respect the veterinarian profession I have learnt that they do not know everything and unfortunately most are not open to other ideas or suggestions. I vowe to ALWAYS be my pets advocate, don't really care if I piss people off anymore....will do what it takes to protect my family!! Thanks Dr Judy and Gwen.....Appreciate and love all that you do!!

can cats eat sardines with stage 3 kidney disease? My cat wont eat any of my cooked food without it. Also, what are your thoughts on Darwins Pet foods Intelligent Design for Kidney Support?
Hi Dr. Judy, just wanted to thank you for being so helpful with your advice. My 17ish yo old was diagnosed with diabetes several years ago and within the last year, ckd. I’ve been in search of finding good foods that he’ll actually eat that aren’t prescription diet. Concerned about the calcium levels in certain raw food because they grind up bone in the ones I’ve found. A vet online recommended the “wellness” brand (pate), his cat has the same issues as mine. Just curious about that brand and what you might recommend.. thank you so much :)
Not a fan of the brand. Depending on stage of CKD, protein restriction is not recommended (I only restrict in stage 4). You can buy meat and organ grinds without bone, but you will still need some calcium in the diet. Restricting or balancing phosphorous is more important. Check out Hare-Today, Raw Feeding Miami, and My Pet Carnivore. Dr. Harvey's Canine Health can be used to balance the meals with whatever meat you choose and is what they recommend from among their bases for kidney disease dogs.
Thank you so much I appreciate your reply. Not sure what stage he’s in right now but certain it’s between 2-3. Do they make a feline version of the Dr. Harvey balancer to add to the food?
I did not know whether my senior pomerion was going through ckd or not But in mid sep he ate 1 puppy chew stick made up of chicken protein. After eating his entire body got swelled. And doing red potty, I don't know whether it was red color or blood coming out of his stool as the stick was red in color. Was it impacted my 12vyear old pomerion kidney. N we take him to the vet n he was okay then but it impacted internally as in Dec 2023 he was again week , and in Feb 2024 he was diagnosed with ckd issue. My question is that chew twist stick contributed to ckd issue in my dog.
Hi Judy. Zeus has jumped back up to 2.2 last night from 1.6 after leaving the hospital. Were not sure where baseline CRE levels will be at but hospitalization is no longer a treatment due to cost. Weve cleared all of our accounts in the past 7 days while he was in there. My question to you is what is the next line of treatment? We went to our vet and are now doing Sub Q fluids and will do this at home if need be. But is there anything else I should be trying to do or give him to save my dog?
Give fluids at home daily. Your vet can show you how. 2.2 is not horrible and it's not a surprise it went back up a bit when coming off fluids. As long as the dog is eating and drinking you should be able to manage at home.
We are having a very similar issue . Our vet seems to be reluctant to prescribe anything that got prescribed at ER. I’m not so she he will prescribe fluids even though we did for a week when at home and she seemed to be doing better when on IV. Feel very worried
@@yuliyagarcia2470 What is your dogs CRE levels at? Our dog was doing better on fluids however we knew this wasnt an option for the long run. We took the leap of faith of took him off and put him on SubQ fluids for about 1 week and then his CRE levels baselined out back to normal. Our vet never found out what the cause was but its believed to be a toxins or poison and not lepto. We still do very frequent blood testing to check his BUN and CRE levels to make sure hes at normal levels and hes been doing fine since. But he did spend 7 days in the hospital with a very aggressive liquid dialysis that reduced his CRE levels from 4.4 to 1.6. I have a sharpei- known for genetically weak kidneys. I currently feed K9 raw food. What can I do to help prevent kidney disease please? She is 1 and a half.
Support Jing (TCVM) with food. Foods and supplements to support kidney jing include liver, kidneys, fish, kelp, reishi mushrooms, Vitamin D, fermented raw goat milk, bone, bone marrow and bone broth, almonds, black sesame seeds (grind first) and bee pollen. Do not supplement vitamin D without testing vitamin D levels first. Too much vitamin D can cause kidney failure.
You can soak it but it doesn't come close to the moisture provided by a high-moisture diet. Kibble is dead food with added synthetic vitamins and sprayed-on fats for palatability.
Dr. Morgan , Do you do consultations? I need to know what supplements I need to get from you for my 16 year old Lhasa Apso and need to know if I need to change her diet or not. She is healthy;however, the traditional vet says that she has renal disease and pushing for Rx renal kibble which I refused. She eats raw organ meat + Stella and Chewys raw venison, lamb, and beef . I also give her raw goat milk . She has been on a healthy carnivore diet without grains and carbs her whole life . These are her markers SDMA 21 BUN 28 CREA 0.7 PHOS 3.4 Glucose 119 UA specific gravity 1.014 No glucose in urine She eats well and her energy level is normal for a 16 y/o dog . The only symptom that I noticed recently is an increased in water intake. Thank you so much
I do. You really don't need to change the diet yet with those values. This blog lists supplements. No need for the actual "treatments" yet. drjudymorgan.com/blogs/blog/diagnosing-and-treating-kidney-disease
Hi @Judy Morgan I’ve been following you for a while and reading your books. Do you know of any herbs/supplements to lower serum BUN? I’ve heard of the existence of ayurvedic herbs.

From what ive heard its not enough. Dry kibble has a 10% moisture while most wet has 70% moisture. Your better off going to wet food. Cuz its a big dif.

This is so stressful, and confusing. I want to do the best for my dog. She has early kidney disease , so I switched her to a prescription diet my Vet said to do. Now watching this I'm like great , so it was to soon? She was peeing a lot, and drinking a lot of water. Since switching her diet that has stopped. Her kidney levels have improved. So I'm torn now. I can't make her food myself. But I think I am going to switch her to Just Food for Dogs Renal support. It's human grade whole foods. I hope she will eat it as I'll feel better with her not being on a unhealthy canned prescription diet.
@@judymorgan4241 Thank you for replying 🙏🏼 I'm going to transition her to the Just Food for Dogs Renal food. I have noticed a huge negative change in her since putting her on the RC renal canned food. She isn't herself, always has a fur Mohawk, I have felt like I'm poisoning her, but she hated the Hills so I've just tried my best. I feel so guilty because I want her to enjoy her last years. She's 15.
@@judymorgan4241 thanks. I feed my dog (with KD) whole eggs every day and I know so many people are scared of them because of the phosphorus. I'm always telling them, as long as we stay within our dog's phosphorus allowance, eggs are absolutely okay and full of so many wonderful nutrients. I'd like to also be able to tell them about them being a blood tonic, now that I've learned that from watching your series on KD. What does a blood tonic do?
@@judymorgan4241 I'm back again 😁 I had a question about parsley. I see it always warned against in one of the CKD groups I'm in. The person who warns against it says it's a diuretic and kidney dogs need to stay hydrated, not have moisture forced out of their bodies. BUT, a lot of foods are natural diuretics. I think parsley is unfairly picked on. I was cautioned against it myself when I mentioned I'd used it in a meatloaf recipe for my KD dog. The horror, eh? lol From you, I've learned parsley is a blood tonic, it's neutral (I'm pretty sure my dog is hot) and it treats stagnation. You say here in this video that the kidneys are all about moisture in, moisture out, to get the bloodstream filtered and cleaned. I know Dr. Connor Brady also writes about diuretic herbs in his kidney disease articles, about them flushing the kidneys. Can you assure me, once and for all, that parsley is totally fine to use in my KD dog's diet? I don't mean copious amounts, I'm reasonable with everything I feed him. He does have a high moisture diet, although gently cooked, not raw.
@@leroybrown8858 They also need to make sure fluid is running through the kidneys so I love using parsley, asparagus, lots of foods that could be considered diuretics.
My shihpoo girl/6yrs old has been really sick. She has lost a lot of weight, vomiting at first… I took her to the animal hospital and the X-rays showed her kidneys (both) enlarged. Phosphorus levels at 16. I took her back the next day for an IV. She is on an antibiotic every 12 hours and hunger stimulant. That’s all they really gave me. The blood work shows no bacteria but she was already on the antibiotics bc I took her to the humaine society vet when this first started. I am trying everything to get her regulated but she is so weak and eating small amounts at this point. Mainly just chicken. She turns her head to everything else. :( what would you suggest to regulate her levels quickly?
Hopefully this is an infection that will respond to antibiotics and fluids. If it is a toxin that caused the kidney damage the prognosis is worse. She may not be able to come back from this - it will all depend on how she responds to treatment. She won't die without food for a few days, but she will die if she doesn't get enough fluids - so focus on that for now.
I did his test while fasting before his dental scaling procedure so maybe he got dehydrated and showed highbun andaybe thats whu the vets said ots normal.
Thank you so much for all your videos. Our 6 yr old dog was diagnosed with CKD a year ago. Her Creatinine was at 2.15 at the time and stayed stable for 3 months till it began to climb slowly. When she was at 3.8 we had her admitted after which it came down to 2.4. We've continued with fluids at home since, and it had sort of stabilised somewhere between 2.8 and 3.1 for two months. Following which it has begun to climb again - we're currently at 4.12. We live in India, where summers are very intense, and she seems particularly affected by the heat, could her levels be climbing because of the weather? Or is this an expected trend considering it's been a year? She's currently on a high dose (20 ml/kilo) of IV fluids at the moment, but we're treating her at home, since she has a cannula on, twice a day, 2.5 hour sessions, as she refuses to eat when she's at the hospital. She's an extremely picky eater and she picks out mostly parts of the meat from her meal. We're struggling to feed her a balanced diet because she's so picky. She used to love fish, but now she's gone off it. She likes chicken, but only the bits near the bone, and she loves eggs. She's on all the supplements, but we're at a loss as to what to do when all she'll eat is small bits of chicken and eggs, especially as her levels rise. Her phosphorus is at 7 and has been fluctuating between 7 and 8 over the past couple of months, but doesn't seem to be coming down any lower despite her low-phos diet+phos binder. Urea and BUN go up and down depending on her fluid dose. And her last urine test from a week ago came back fine. I've been following your videos, but we're unable to go by the book as she's such a picky eater. What would you advise that we focus on when we're dealing with a picky eater and the disease is progressing?
Hello Ms Judy. I have a quick questiion if you dont mind. My dog doesnt have a disease per say but his blood work came back high in 2 areas. The HEMATOCRIT came back at 59.9% and the Reference Value levels should be between 38..3% - 56.5% so its about 4% too high im assuming. The other level that was a little high was the BUN which came back at 33mg/dl and the Reference Value on that one should be between 9-31 mg/dl so i guess its 2 mg over the safe zone. My vet put my on Hills low protien food but my 5 pound chihuahua does not like it and he seems to be sleeping alot more. I use to give him raw chicken with vegetables which is why it is probably a little high. I didnt know much about a balanced diet before but i am trying to learn what is best to give him at this time at the age of 5-6 years old. Thank again you for what you do Ms. judy.
You absolutely should not feed the dog a low protein food. Slightly high HCT and BUN could mean the dog was a tiny bit dehydrated at the time of the blood draw. High BUN does not mean kidney disease, so a prescription diet is absolutely wrong.
Hello Judy. I'm from India. My femalw Pomeranian Dog age 8 yrs recently Went through her Blood Test becoz she lost around 2lbs within 5 months and lost lot of muscle especially around butt part. Currently she is 15.50 lbs. Her Report are very high with Creatinine level 3.5 mg/dl ( Normal reference range 0.5-1.4) and Bun Level at 128 mg/dl ( Normal Ref Range 9.2 - 29.2) Current she is going IV treatment. And she is not much active and sleeps whole day. she is eating well but she doesn't drink much to no Water from past. Im feeding her boiled chicken mix with some Rice and Chicken soup. Vet suggest to lower the Chicken quantity. But when I reduce the Chicken Quantiy she doesn't eat. So what should I Do. Can you suggest something to improve her diet and health. Much appreciated. Thankyou.
She would have survived more days or week but vets gave her Excess IV Fluids more than her small body could handle which started getting into her lungs and made her difficult to breathe to a point where she collapsed.

I know, heartbreaking... I just lost my beloved dog from diabetes and kidney failure
.....yes our pets are a sick lot! Breath that in every nightThe biggest is our " food" pizza, chips, chocolate, bread, etc!

this is great news for me, thanks for sharing this information, i'll try the tripe with my dog since it's available fresh in the markets, sure my pup will love it... He was recently diagnosed with kidney disease and it was under the weather last week, it's likely he has a spleen tumor but we won't operate since he's 17 and it would be madness to submit him to such treatment. 🥺
She only ate the veterinarian foods if given appetite stimulants but now she hardly does that anymore.

Any luck?
Thanks!

Hello Dr Judy. Great video. Thank you 🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🥰🥰🥰🥰
My 10 year old maltipoo has recently been diagnosed. They wanted her on a prescription diet- we switched her to just food for dogs kidney support or whatever it’s called. Was this the wrong choice? She is still eating but seems really low energy. I started using the NHV holistic vet kidney support bundle too
Hi! I also have a maltipoo. She just got diagnosed. How was ur experience with the prescription dog food?
So glad I found you.
Thank you!!
Good luck with your furbaby.

a small amount of salt is fine. No high-salt treats.
My husky just showed a slight elevation of bun and creatinine, normal SDMA, and the vet wants me to put him on a Purina NF Rx diet. I think it's nuts.
Tripe can be bought at Mexican stores. We LOVE tripe in Menudo.
But that’s bleached
You mentioned that you don't worry about phosphorus until about stage 4, but if cat is eating a commercial canned food or dry (god forbid), many of these companies use tricalcium phosphate which is even more bioavailable, and many pet foods are quite high in phosphorus, or the calcium is lower than phosphorus, which actually raises phosphorus even more.
Feed them CANNED FOOD ONLY. DRY HAS TOO LOW OF MOISTURE regardless of phos. It's too low moisture for animals w ckd

How is ur dog now??

@@mike-fq4th Ah, did not know this was for a kitty. Definitely don't want to restrict protein early on. I don't think Dr. Harvey's has one.

But he did spend 7 days in the hospital with a very aggressive liquid dialysis that reduced his CRE levels from 4.4 to 1.6. For a young dog in stage 1.. you mentioned a phosphorus level of 4 something? Is that the percentage on a dry matter basis if looking at a recipe for home cooked? Is there a total mg of phosphorus per day based on the dogs weight? TY!
The 4 is not what is in the food. It is what is measured on the blood test.
For tripe try a Hispanic, or Asian grocery shop.

Is it ok to soak kibble in water? Would that be similar to canned?
You can soak it but it doesn't come close to the moisture provided by a high-moisture diet. Kibble is dead food with added synthetic vitamins and sprayed-on fats for palatability.

is organic tallow ok to add fats?
Uncooked fats can be fine. Add slowly and watch for any GI upset.

The horror, eh? lol
From you, I've learned parsley is a blood tonic, it's neutral (I'm pretty sure my dog is hot) and it treats stagnation.

Doctor ,how many grams of cooked chicken liver should be given daily to a 15 pounds cat having a CKD ?
You should have mentioned that omega 3-EPA and DHA is very important for kidney disease. Also cats with kidney disease need more B vitamins.
This was a five-day series. It was discussed on a different day.
Hi Dr Judy please help me to save my dog he is 7 years old he suffering from ckd he is not eating food his creatinine is 19.6
Only IV fluids can help when it is that high. It may not be reversible.
Hello Judy. I'm from India. My femalw Pomeranian Dog age 8 yrs recently Went through her Blood Test becoz she lost around 2lbs within 5 months and lost lot of muscle especially around butt part.
Currently she is 15.50 lbs. Her Report are very high with Creatinine level 3.5 mg/dl ( Normal reference range 0.5-1.4) and Bun Level at 128 mg/dl ( Normal Ref Range 9.2 - 29.2)
Current she is going IV treatment.
Thankyou.

@@aravindhmass2873 She passed away on 2nd September. I believe it was because of "Pulmonary edema".
@@nikhilparab1815Oh sorry😭May her soul rest in peace 💔How many days she was survived from the day of diagnosed?
@@aravindhmass2873 she was Diagnosed on 19th August 23 & Died on 2nd September 23.
She would have survived more days or week but vets gave her Excess IV Fluids more than her small body could handle which started getting into her lungs and made her difficult to breathe to a point where she collapsed.

My dog has suddenly been refusing to eat her prescription renal diet (I do have to say it is pretty stinky -- RC Renal Support). She has only been on it a few weeks and was doing ok with it as I add in some vegetables and some UNSALTED chicken broth but now she picks out the veggies and is leaving the kibble. Any suggestions?

My Chihuahua has been on RC Renal ,but the can thin slices in gravy. She really likes it. I think I'm going to switch her to Just Food For Dogs Renal dog food. Since whole foods are better for dogs . This is all stressful, and confusing.
For those of us who are not doctors and do not have Laboratories. Would be nice if you could give us some recipes. Rather than generalizations on certain things for us to look up later I did hear tripe and eggs and barley and raw fat. seems like every one of these videos from anyone seems to just like to hear themselves talk and not give us the actual diet. this video said feeding pets with kidney disease. I'm sure you are good at what you do but for us idiots maybe just a list of what to buy how to make it and what to feed
