  • In this session, Dr. Judy shares Day 3 of Kidney Awareness Week. Today she covers the stages of Kidney Disease and how to decide where we are with the patient. While most traditional vets will assign a stage by the elevated SDMA, Dr. Judy shares that we need to include other parameters as well in making this determination. She also argues against protein restriction during stage 1 or 2. (Recorded on 3/16/2022)

    Your videos are invaluable! My 3 1/2 yr old kitty has slightly elevated creatinine. A few other values are high end normal but his urine is well concentrated. Vet wants me to start an Rx early renal stage diet but I balked. Desperately trying to get a consult with a vet nutritionist. In the meantime, I'm keeping him on wet food to which I add water since he never drinks. It's really hard to find low phosphorus OTC food that isn't also low protein. So frustrating. I've filled an entire notebook while watching your videos on this topic and others. Thank you so much!

    My dog was diagnosed by abdominal ultrasound results everything else is completely normal. Her blood is normal ish the only thing that was abdominal on two different blood panels that were taken six months apart was her blood bun/creatinine ratio the bun, and the creatinine individually were normal, but the ratio between the two was high. The sdma on the first test was. 14 on the second after starting a low phosphorus diet it was 9. I am hopeful since we caught this early that she can live a semi-normal life for many more years to come. She’ll be 12 this year and I take her to a holistic vet as well as a conventional vet.

    When Dr. Judy says to give bone broth to keep them well hydrated, does she mean in the morning before the test? I thought they needed to be fasting before the SDMA test?

    • @judymorgan4241
      @judymorgan4241 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can give it anytime. Bone broth won't affect SDMA.

      I understand for any blood test they should have only water and be overnight fasting, since any food would alter the results :-p

    Hello. I heard dogs on home cooked diets need to be given a daily supplement to make sure its well balanced. Do I still need to do that when using your 2 kidney support recipes or are the recipes well balance already? If so, which supplement do you recommend?

    Hello from state of Washington my dog was diagnosed from chronic kidney deases stage 3 the veterinary gave us the prescription kidney diet.. and she what us to do the fluid. Any suggestions to us of any good food diet or anything.. thank you

    • @judymorgan4241
      @judymorgan4241 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fluids should help. You need to control phosphorous - your veterinarian may want to put your dog on a phosphorous binder. I am not a fan of prescription diets - you could work with a nutritionist to design a home-made diet. drjudymorgan.com/search?q=kidney

    Hello from Greece, thank you for all the information you are sharing. Where can we download the printouts that you mention in these videos please?
    P.S My dog (6,5 years old and fearful dog) had SDMA 13,7 back in November, and creatinine 1,42. A month later he had 1,20 the creatinine, just by adding linseed oil and horsetail in his food. 3 months later...creatinine 1,39 and SDMA 23 :( but 0 symptoms until today. Ultrasound was clean, urine tests both in November and March were clean, but always his potassium slightly at the edge, around 5,6-5,69. Vet is saying he is in stage 2 even (due to high SDMA) but due to 0 symptoms we could say he is in stage 1. Tomorrow we go check again BUN, creatinine, UPC etc. What would you say?

      @@DrJudyMorgan hello Joey and thank you for the reply. Is there any chance dr Judy could tell an opinon on my dog's values while he is asymptomatic? His creatinine keeps increasing although I am cooking for him since 1,5 month ago...now its 1.56. And his urine specific gravity is 1020 from 1040 a month ago and 1050 in november... I feel like he is a ticking bomb :(

      @@elisabethdimitras2718 It would appear the disease is advancing, which unfortunately, is what it does. I'm not sure why the disease is advancing in this case, as the dog is young. He does sound like a Water personality from a TCVM perspective and they are ruled by the kidneys. You may be at the stage where protein needs to be lowered a bit in the diet.

    • @elisabethdimitras2718
      @elisabethdimitras2718 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Judy Morgan hello and many thanks for the feedback. In fact, I have indeed lowered the protein a lot, more than what canine nutritionists have said (they were recommending 80g daily intake but I read in a book that 50g is enough for a healthy dog so I gave 1 gram per kg thus 32grams daily, as some other people with dogs with KCD have recommended) but as I said, his urine specific gravity lowered to 1020 and I read that this happens when you give low protein diet...so I thought to increase it to 50g at least. I will take a look on what a water personality is...it feels like being in an ultra marathon race...he is so energized and happy, he has no idea he is sick... But he is a dog with behavioural issues since 8 months (like all siblings of this offspring). As a fearful dog, from TCM point of view, it seems that this is the cause of the CKD so tomorrow we start the emotion pill Ding Zhi Wan...I wish I could give the Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan but it's high in potassium so I can't risk it, although I managed with the home cooked food to decrease it. I may also try cordyceps.

    Is vit b3 an effective phosphorus binder???

      Apparently crushed eggshells can be a good binder. I just crush mine with a cup in a bowl or in an old coffee grinder.

      Difficult to do at home. Look for youtube videos on it. Easier on large dogs.
