    This is an EXCELLENT explanation for why these shear pins are always breaking! Thank you for explaining the problem so well. 👍 now to try to find the stronger pins.

    I do not think there is a more comprehensive video on shear bolts out there on TH-cam. Additionally any viewer watching this video will now realise why they were prematurely breaking their shear bolts just like our neighbour Ronnie before we started installed the proper ones on his 3 stage Cub Cadet. He used to shear the accelerator pin every snowfall because the dealer was selling him 2 stage shear bolts once he installed one of our 3 stage shear pins he has never had an issue yet. Very well done, i can tell that a lot of time went into researching this information hopefully the likes and comments reflect that effort!

    I really love all the technical info you give. My project started out as replacing the slotted spring pins holding the secondary auger to the drive shaft as they failed. this is the second time in 7 -10 years. I watched your videos on the differential repair to figure out how to disassemble the machine. I ended up finding 2 bent shear pins as well and a worn out skid shoe. The wrong or incorrectly used shear pins (I am still trying to figure out which so i can solve that as well) were the probable partial cause of the failure. 1 of the split pins had fallen out as well. You provide great information that is helping me repair my machine and get it back to a better place than it was even before the failure!

      @EliminatorPerformance  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes definitely. As shown, I buy direct from MTD and I get the 50 packs to save a bit of money. I believe my cost is about $0.40 each, and they list for about $3.50 each, or I sell 4 for $10. I figure if I sell all those shear pins shown, I make a profit of about $550 which isn't bad.

      Definitely not going that far Don lol I see a lot of MTD equipment, and had these 3 in the shop at the same time, so it made sense to film this one.
      Also, Ariens, Deere, Toro, and Husqvarna (to my knowledge) don't have the 3 stage snowblowers. I think it's just an MTD thing.

      @@waynestefinashen239 yes Wayne I'm well aware of Honda shear bolts lol as I was a Honda dealer for 35 years at my family business. It took me 2 years to talk my Dad into selling "that Japanese junk", and in 1985 he finally relented and he now always says "that's the best thing we ever did Don"! In 1996-97 Honda claimed that we were their largest selling snowblower dealer in the WORLD! We sold a TON of units those 2 years! .... they're still selling shear bolts for them lol. I retired from the business 2 years ago and now work from my place repairing equipment, 50 years with family was enough for me. P.S. - we were Honda's largest generator dealer in the 🌎 for a few years as well so let me know if you have any Honda questions 😁👍

      Rick your right appears confusing but using the proper shear pins saves a lot of aggravation especially when that back accelerator needs a shear pin installed it is a pain in the you know what to get all the holes aligned for installation of the shear pin.

    Another excellent video. I hope you don't mind but I want to mention a Hackberry did to save a Bolens snowblower. This machine had snapped the drive chain because of the axle bushing wearing out which are impossible to find and are larger than the typical bronze bushings. I cut an old Craftsman snowblower up and used the bushings and piece about 6 inches square around the bushing which now is a bolted using Ariens hardware though that makes no difference. I also learned about chains and used one from a rusted out machine with a great chain after making a C-clamp press to put the chain back together because I'm cheap and couldn't wait for quick links. Hope that helps someone.

    Thanks for the heads-up about the possible part number revision for 3-stage blowers. The PDF manuals still list the old part number for the pins but MTD's parts buying site lists the newer part number. I have both a two-stage from 2009 and a 3-stage from 2016. A couple years ago the 3-stage broke 2 pins and nearly broke 2 others. All I was doing was plowing into some deep snow. Guess now I know what the issue was! I have learned to hate 3-stage blowers, they just don't do anything compared to my trusty 2-stage.

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea they're definitely worth upgrading, the cost is nearly the same I believe. My dealer prices are anyway.. I don't personally like them because they force snow into the smaller impeller. If MTD used a larger impeller like ariens 14" ones, I don't think it would be as bad.

    Thank you for a Great video. I have a 1997 or 98 MTD snow blower. I have been told that they only made it for one year. Would this still use regular MTD parts ? My problem is when I use the electric start as soon as I plug in the power cord it starts turning over. The button doesn't do anything. Also what shear pins should I use. Thank you for all your helpful videos. I live in the U.S. in northern Indiana.

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Google your model number and look for a parts diagram, those made in 97-98 would most likely use regular shear bolts, and would have a part number listed in the parts diagram. So follow the same steps searching MTD manuals, and you'll get the info you need. This shear pin change only applies to 2015-2018 models

    So with all that said its safe to assume I can not use the 738-05273 "3" stage pins in my 2007 2 stage blower? Even though they look the same. But we`re not 100% sure of the 3 stage pins grade hardness.

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's correct, if you have a 2 stage, you should run the 2 stage pins (1.5" or 1.75"). The #3 headed shear pin is most definitely stronger, as it was manufactured as an upgrade to the weaker 2 stage pin. If you keep shearing pins, you could potentially use them as they measure the same, but it would be at your own risk.

    Have you ever seen major damage to the spinning blades from a customer bringing in a snowblower? Would hitting a hunk of ice cause some damage? I was driving my jeep thru the piles left on the side by the plow, I was trying to break them up so they would melt easier. I hit a big chunk of ice, the Jeep bounced in the air maybe a foot or two, and everything inside the Jeep was throw about, and it surprised me quite a bit, and the Jeep was fine through all that, my underware was another story 🤣

      @@Mike-ig2zq Mike that is why we still have an old Craftsman 8/25 that we installed $400 worth of (list prices) parts.
