  • Step by Step!
    Today we'll be replacing both the drive and auger belt on a Craftsman 944.520630 snowblower.
    Auger Belt: 408007 or 532408007 or STENS 258-038 (5/8"x38")
    Drive Belt: 419744 or 532419744 (1/2"x34.5")
    We decided to use a Kevlar belt for the auger, as it will last longer than a standard belt.
    Follow the steps in this video, and your machine will be back up and running again!

    Thank you very, very much for this video. I knew I had a problem with the impeller's belt in mine but had no idea how to approach it; your video both helped me identify exactly what the problem was (slipped belt in this case, one of the belt guards had come loose in the front half), but also the start to finish of opening it up, replacing the belt and fixing everything up. Definitely saved a lot of hassle and probably some of my sanity. Thank you again!

    16:22 "This may be the most difficult part if doing it by yourself. - Amen. Thank you for the amazingly clear and concise instructions. I found your video when I came in defeated unable to reattach the two sides of the snow blower after the auger belt change, I searched a ton of videos that skipped past that part. Within 15 minutes of watching your video my blower is back together. Thank you!

    Perfect video , wish I had found it a few years ago though . Figured all this out when I blew an impeller bearing a few years ago . Then blew another one had to do it all over again , and added a flat bar that I heated and bent to go from the housing to the worm gear housing to stop it from flexing . Just going over my blower for the coming season and finally found a video that has my exact machine . Looking for belts , thanks 🙏 great channel . Have a merry Christmas 🎅 everyone

    Very nice video. Picked up a Snow Blower off the curb. The guy said it needed a belt change but everything else was OK. A 1997 Craftsman 22 inch 5 horse model. Going to give it to grandson to move snow next winter and earn some money. He is shoveling now so he will enjoy this tool. They live in northern Iowa. Thank You for doing these video's very helpful. Best EXPLANATORY video ever- Thanks a lot. Each word is followed by an action. No Bs, No reality type show, No kardashians, No waist of time. You should be a book writer or be an actor! Seriously. I had the same problem with my Brigg & Stratton snow blower but couldn't understand the cause. It was working normal and with lots of power but not throwing the snow as it should. Watched many videos here on TH-cam but just got confused and frustrated until I watched this one. Ordered the OEM part and installed it in 45 minutes. Thanks to your video.

    I have the same snowblower. I wish I had watched your video before I changed mine. This is much easier than what I did 🤣: I removed the auger idler arm and the drive plate just rocks forward. Then when I put the idler arm back in, I had to figure out which hole to put the pin from the control rod back in, I found it was all rusty and treated it with wd40 to remove the rust and then fluid film to protect it. Wiped it down after with a dry paper towel so nothing would drip, and made sure no lubricant would get near the drive belt path. Still looks like it's only a couple years old and the label says 2005. Hope to keep it running as long as possible. Treating that machine well is better than paying for a new one and I have fun maintaining it.

    Great video! The close up camera detail helped me figure out that the previous owner had hooked the idler arm spring in the wrong spot causing the drive belt to slip. The manual doesn't even show where the spring is supposed to hook into! Used your technique to replace both belts while i was at it. Thanks

    WOW!!! Man, thanks so much for posting this great video! I've been racking my brain for 3 days now trying to figure out WHY my new auger belt is so dang tight that the auger spins constantly with the engine running. My 2015 Husqvarna 12/28 is IDENTICAL to this Craftsman, only orange lol. So, I'm thinking my mistake is when I put the new auger belt on, I'm looping it OVER that bottom brake lol. SO, I found this great video and watched at work while I manned a machine haha. Even with the sound off, I was able to see my problem now. Your video was the best and one of the most detailed and informative I've watched on this subject! Now I'm confident I can take it apart for the THIRD time and fix my issue. Great video! Thanks for it

    Unfortunately I too had to separate my Simplicity to replace auger belt. One small tip - don't loosen the bottom bolts too much otherwise the two halves will separate, not just pivot on the lower bolts. Lesson learned the hard way as I thought the bolts were in a hole, not a slot. Overall not as bad as I expected and was anticipating.

      @Eliminator Performance definitely, and good work on both the snowblower and the videos, its not easy doing it all yourself.
      I have a Poulan Pro PR624ES (I think it's a 2008-2009) and I keep slipping the drive belt, I've gone through 3 new ones and the 1 that slipped off, and at $30/belt it's getting crazy. I just picked up BOTH idler and auger tensioners and replaced those as well as the springs on the brackets. I also swapped out those 2 crappie screw/bolts that hold the auger on with 2 regular bolts, then on the outside I put a washer, crush washer, another washer then a nut and finally a 2nd safety nut because I had issues with the auger belt slipping off last year and it was because of the movement of the auger assembly moving left and right and you snowblowed. I just did a hour test run, 4 parking spots, around 2 of my 3 barns and its holding, but I will know for sure tomorrow as I have a 1/8 mile long driveway and my plow truck can't make it the while way so I spend about 3 hours with the snowblower on the drive, around the sidewalks and garage. So if you have any other tips I can try if it slips off again tomorrow, please let me know, I also checked the bearings, chains (I bought an extra set while I was at the shop yesterday (its a 156 mile trip there and back, so you don't want to forget), I also checked everything you did and changed the oil a second time for good measure. I still should get some of that Nickel Anti-Seize you mentioned as I have been using the silicon spray lubricant my mechanic friend uses, and seeing as he's the shop that anybody in a 200 mile radius wants to go to (right now he's booked solid until May 2nd) and finally I use "lightweight gear oil in the augers transaxle, should I flush it and put that other stuff in that you mentioned?

    I have an MTD 30" snowblower that needs a new auger belt. Attempting to put the belt into the big auger pulley ran into 1 rod type belt keeper on each side of the big pulley and those were not made to move, making the belt install nearly impossible without being very rough on the belt. To make that part of the job very tough is aggravated by not being able to pivot the 2 sectioned parts of the machine anymore than about 2 in. apart at the top. Also the pivoting point for the tensioning bracket for the idler pulley is allowing dirt and /or ice to impair movement. This machine is a newer model than what you use for your demo but its design maybe cheaper for MTD but surely is no improvement on previous models.

    I’ve heard that you can get better snow throw distance by upgrading your belt. Is that true?

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Usually there's 2 upgrades, either the rubber impeller modification, which helps to throw snow further. Or the dual belt upgrade, which is when you install a dual pulley system, allowing you run 2 impeller belts. This helps to limit belt slip by increasing the amount of surface area the belts are engaging the pulleys.

    Great vid...question....are most belts same size? I haven't seen any discussion on different sizes.

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No they're usually different size. For instance the drive belt is usually shorter than the auger belt. But usually the same width. Occasionally I'll see a snowblower with a 5/8" auger belt and 1/2" drive belt, with different lengths.

    My Dad has a Huskee Snowblower and the Auger Belt melted through the plastic Housing. The Belt was replaced as well as the control Cable. The Auger is still not running and at a quick inspection it still seems to be too close to the housing and will continue rubbing. Any Suggestions?

    Is the toro power max HD 1232 worth getting or should I avoid? I have a 200 yrd gravel driveway, no slope and can get anywhere from a light dusting to 18” of snow in a 24 hr period. I need something reliable due to the fact I have to do all repairs. Nearest village is over an hrs drive. My old blower came with the place . it’s an old snapper with a 350cc , and is really beat up. Too much gone on it . Needs to be completely rebuilt.

    Many thanks, having a nearly identical 11 year old Poulan Pro machine I just replaced the auger drive belt that was slipping with an OEM replacement but it still slips and appears simply too long, have you run across this? I adjusted the idler pulley to the max but it still slips and the auger won't throw the snow very far and binds up the shoot, it's obvious that the belt is just too loose.

      Sometimes you can't do that because they make the impeller pulley too close to the drive plate

    I put new belts on today. When I tested it, as soon as started it started to walk away even with drive handle in off position. the belt doesn't seem to tight. I can spin it by hand. Should I just let it wear the belt a bit when I use it again or adjust the tension rod. It is pretty sloppy when the handle is disengaged, so thought it would be fine. So I am thinking its just the new belt.

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  ปีที่แล้ว

      The friction disc cable or linkage is probably too tight, if you flip the unit onto it's front end, you should be able to spin the wheels freely

    i want to replace a drive belt and auger belt on a real old snowblower. Not even sure of the make but it could be a BayCrest. I can't read the writing on the belts. Now I measure the belts to be about 39" on the outside. Now do I have to compensate for the stretching of the old belts? One website says to take 2" off the outside measurement of the old belts. What is your recommendation? Thanks. Love your website. I always check your site before I start doing repairs on small engines.

      Auger belts are usually, but not always raw edge. You should try to see what type of belt the OEM (original) belt is, and if yours is the same length you'll be fine!

    I am working on a friends snow blower. Very similar to thjs one. Same mechanics. can’t seem to loosen the tension on the idlers to stop the auger from rotation. It’s like the idler arm won’t retract enough even with the lever rod slack. What would cause this?

    You could remove the nut holding the shute rotation cables above the cover. It will give you more access room with the shute out of the way.

    Good video. One question, since you were replacing the belts, rather than go through the steps to take them off , why not cut them?

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes I need to measure them because I don't have a part number, so I usually don't cut them. A lot of times you also need to know how to get them on, and taking them off shows you the path. Cutting them doesn't show you what you need to take off.
