When this popped up on You Tube I could not resist having a look. Magnetic Island was one of my favourite places back when I lived in Townsville in the 1970s. I could only watch 10 minutes. I wanted to cry. In the 1970s it was a magical place, full of bushland, uniquely dotted with tall magnificent Norfolk pines. Civilisation was just a fringe around Nellie Bay. There was some coral and there were colourful tropical fish to snorkel and see. Now it looks like suburban Townsville. What happened to the bush and the pines. Did they get burned out. And the island was rocky, I could not see any granite boulders. If the bush and the pines and the granite tors are still there, I think you actually might have missed the true magic of Magnetic Island. Or is all that gone!

Thanks so much for watching. I'm not a Townsville local and it was my first time visiting so i can't really comment on how it used but I'm sure it used to be even more pristine! . But I certainly agree that it is basically a suburb of Townsville think the current population is around 3,000 but there's probably a lot more people on the island by the time you include tourists and day trippers. I believe around 70% of the island is still national park though and not readily accessible from the public bus or even paved road. Forts walk was really nice though which is easy to get to with the bus! The bus service kinds of weaves up and down most of the residential streets of each settlement though especially around Nelly Bay as its still got a local purpose to serve - i guess tourists using it is just incidental but that could give the impression the Island is quite urbanized.

Absolutely considering a local half day tour can cost nearly $100 and not take you much further anyway!
