Alex Lifeson is the most underrated, under appreciated guitarist of his generation.
We all owe these guys the biggest thank you.. We are in debt. They earned every penny they have ever made and deserve every penny. They have made my life a better place and i'm sure they have yours too :-) There has never been another band like RUSH, and NEVER will be. Period....
Neil's kit has become so big over the years that they are still building it after the show starts...
his kits are actually smaller these days, but given his new electronics i would say everything is the same.

Prima Donna.... NOT!!! Peart's little smile and tilt of his head after realizing that the tom made it back for an important flare was precious. But not so much as the look and smile of acknowledgment given to the technician for getting it back to him while still playing. The smile lingering for 4 to 5 seconds after just shows how appreciative he is about the people around him.
Sorry Mr. Wheaton for calling you a "technician" no disrespect there...
Props to the camera dude. One of the best "home" videos I've seen.

Best drummer in rock ever
Started listening to Rush this year and there's so much to them that makes them great. Neil's little things here and there are just crazy. This has become one of my favorite song, the drums are just amazing.
You'll find that the more you listen, the better they seem to get. The musicianship of these 3 guys is just unparalleled.
Neil is truly such a bad ass! Love how he goes from traditional to matched grip effortlessly. The guy has put his time in, that's for sure!

My one and only Rush show was at Saratoga, NEw York on 7/23/2010 and it was freezing and raining all day. Cleared up about a half hour before the show started. Geddy actually said "Thank you for enduring the rain! And thank you for WANTING to sit through 3 hours of this stuff!"
Also, these guys are the Gods of music

Always a privilege to watch a / the master play !! You would never no he's missing a Tom until the roadie brings it out .
THAT is why he is the master! He doesn't miss a beat at all and just continues to play like there is nothing wrong with his kit!
Usually, I'd complain about there being no (ahem) camera love for Geddy, but this awesome video gives us an up close and intimate shot of Neil playing for an entire song. WoW.

I saw them in Virginia Beach (May) on the 2014 Clockwork Angels tour. I can't remember the song, but I happened to be looking at a big screen when I saw Neil toss a stick in the air...and he missed it coming back down. He grabbed another one lickety split, and if I hadn't been watching the screen, I would never have known he screwed up, because there was nothing sounding off on the drumbeat. A consummate professional, this video just proves it! thanks for posting my friend.
He missed every one I saw at r40 I was shocked! They weren't broken, he might have done it just in case I don't know.. I'm not a drummer I'm a wannabe guitarist.

Been a fan for the entirety of their existence and to this day, I do not grow tired of listening to RUSH all day, every day !!! Pains me to think that they're done (possibly/likely) as the trio we know and love !!! Greatful for the ride and hopeful for the future !!!
This video's great because most videos of Neil Peart drumming have many cuts to show multiple angles that can be distracting. This has a more personal feel showing the man in his element.

I've never realized how high Neil has his snare and toms till now. With that tom missing you can really see how high his arms have to be in order to hit the hi-hat, and how far he has to extend his reach to hit the furthest cymbals. Awesome!

Brutal... You can see the look on his face at the start of the song like "fuck.. this is gunna be lame" lol. 2:58 he looks so disgusted in that last fill he wants to just stop the song and wait for his tom. I love how he dosent even wait for the guy 2 get done miking it.
For me, this is amazing because Geddy is hardly seen at all. He is only seen in the back screen during the last couple of minutes. It really is an anatomy of a drummer used to his track. The grimace becomes slightly more of a grin after the tom is replaced. High praise indeed. Well, that is relationships in a nutshell. It is not all laughs and giggles all the time. There are moments, echoes, hints and nuances that those in the know catch that the rest miss. Don't understand. Brilliant! Thanks!

Trying to imagine what it must have been like to walk out on stage with a TOM drum and installing it while Neil Pert just keeps on rocking without a beat missed. 1 minute of fame on the stage HAHA. Awesome camera work and thank you for posting. :-D

High School, driving a 63 VW beetle, I had this cassette in ALL the time!
It was the soundtrack to my youth. STILL a kick ass tune. Now if I could just find that ol' walkman in the attic................
I can't get over how great this video is!
My favorite Rush piece to drum to. he adds more fill flourish live, but it's hard enough matching the fills on the CD. But the fills are smartly done with a 16th missing here and there so he can ergonomically find the next tom or cymbal. When i started drumming to this and Tom Sawyer, I'd naturally put in the last 16th or 8th note hit then find myself struggling to get to the correct tom or cymbal on time. I wasn't properly trained so I had to play to what I heard. then videos like this showed me what was really happening. And I went..."Well duh!" I love this isolation on him from the front as well as the top view vids.
The smile at 4:30 seems to say it all after the installation of the tom....hahaha

I noticed the expression on his face throughout the tune on the closeups. This appears to be a tune he really enjoys playing. I'm sad I never got to see them play this tune live. One of my favorites from Moving Pictures for sure.

its hard to believe that one tom makes such an impact. you can tell right from the get go its a primal tom :P even at such a high level of musicianship, the smallest changes can effect the sound inteneded for the song. Great video :) awesome song!
That's great that Neil could make adjustments to playing the fills across the the tom toms... That one missing tom, is probably one he goes for the most often, and not being able to have it there would be uncomfortable/uneasy. I play the drums (not professionally), and you establish muscle memory of where to hit/play certain things. If your drums aren't set up to how you are use to (ride cymbal mounted too high, floor tom shifted too much to the right) it can throw off your playing a bit. If you play guitar, it would almost be like missing a string, and about to take a solo.
If I'd ever meet mr. Peart, only thing I'd do is asking him for one hug, as a personal thank you for a lifetime of guidance.
Once in the 70's I saw them setting up the stage after the opening act and a roadie tripped over a cord and broke the headstock off one of Alex's Les Paul guitars. You could see a bit of "discussion" off stage and they brought out another just like it. I can't remember which show this was because I saw them on almost every tour in those days. It may have been "Hemispheres" in Waterloo IA with Pat Travers opening.

The Master of Drum? It's true he went to Africa to LEARN to play the African sound, so now he's the Master of Drums? There are power jazz drummers (his age ) who can and HAVE ran circles around him. BILLY COBHAM ...DENNIS CHAMBERS. NEIL is only a rock drummer with a high except. Please look around before making this kind of statement.
You can not put a rock drummer in a power jazz fusion band. But you can easily put a jazz drummer in a rock band. Including RUSH> One can't just start playing jazz music, like you can in rock music.
There is no fenece required in rock drumming. But fenece is a must in jazz drumming. Jazz drumming is way more pleasant to the ear than rock drumming in drum solo. It's kind of funny how one can steal rock music when one didn't invent it. It's also kind of funny when clearly the best musicians (drummers) never get to be called the best. Did you know that there were ONCE Black FEMALE rock guitarist in the 40's? HENCE: before Elvis, Jerry Lee (50's)- Do you know who put the guitar as the leading roll in the rock band? Look it up and investigate music. It's to one's wonder why there aren't any Black guitarists, even when they've invented country, blues, ROCK, etc music. Do you still think Neil is the best drummer, or should I continue with more unknown facts?.........The are/have been a lot of drummer who have that very same talent. The music heightened his talent as a drummer, not the drums itself.

Broad sweeping generalizations. Billy Cobham is one of my favorite drummers, and certainly has chops for miles, but if you stuck him in Rush, it doesn't necessarily mean it would improve things. Conversely, to suggest Mr, Peart couldn't function in a fusion or jazz band is absurd. If you knew anything about him as a player, you'd know he studies all styles and techniques, and would no doubt spend an inordinate amount of time to conquer such a task. He plays the way he does by choice, and his performance is informed by his love of Buddy Rich AND Keith Moon. It's completely subjective. I'm not suggesting by a long shot that Peart is the best drummer ever, as I'm certain he wouldn't either. I can think of a long list of people who have chops surpassing his, yet he remains on of my favorites for his particular style. To think rock and jazz are completely separate things, is elitist at best. It's all music. Finesse can applied to both...or pure power. Does Jazz require a more learned technique? For the most part, yes. No argument. I'm not suggesting Phil Rudd could take on a big band, but I don't think, say, Bill Bruford could have the same power in AC/DC. (Nor do I think either would have any interest in such an endeavor ) Each thing has it's own charms. Like Jazz, rock has a myriad of sub-genres, and to make blanket assumptions about either, diminishes what's really important: Making music.
As to the there "aren't any black guitarist" nonsense, I'm not sure what point you were making, because there are plenty of musicians of color. You're just not looking.

I'm always amazed at the amount of times I hear people refer to one Rush video or another and say "That's the only time I've ever seen Neil smile or have fun". As someone who collects bootlegs and has seen Rush more than 30 times going back to the 80s I know there are countless times that Neil has smiled, laughed, and goofed around behind the kit. He obviously doesn't do it continuously because he's busy. If you haven't seen it then you just haven't been paying attention.

Absolutely - they won't be here much longer. They said in a CNN interview they'd make music as long as they felt it was good music, but also ten years maximum I seem to remember being mentioned somewhere....
How the hell do they remember their whole catalogue?
They use background vocal tracks, that they trigger to supplement Geddy's vocals, since a lot of Rush songs are double tracked with vocals. Geddy still sings the main parts, but they do trigger prerecorded background singing.
Wow! I just bought those Audio Technica M-50 headphones a couple weeks ago. Now I see Peart wearing them and know I made the right choice!

Couple things:
1: Great Quality audio and visually
2: Gotta give props to Neil for compensating for the missing tom
3: Props to the drum tech who placed said tom, all the while having to look at Neils slight disappointment
And #4: I was recently asked by a frient what was my favorite song off of Moving Pictures. I replied with The Camera Eye, I just love Neils performance in this song, plus that solo near the end is pretty sweet too.
This really cool to watch.
To be fair, though, I'm pretty sure that open heart surgery is pretty much always performed on a live patient.
