RUSH "La Villa Strangiato" - Still No Guitar - Boston - Time Machine Tour - HD High Quality

  • After a trainwreck in Far Cry when Alex's entire stack blows up, Neil and Ged start the encore before Alex's guitar is back online. Hilarity ensues as the techs scramble and Alex rants.
Interview with Lerxst in Guitarist Magazine posted online on Jan 10, 2011:
    www.musicradar....
So no gear problems yet on this tour?
"None and I'm knocking on wood. It's been pretty good, there are always a couple of issues here and there and we've had a few little problems on this tour -- and tracing them back through a complex system can always be challenging. But I think we got all the bugs out of it on the first half of the tour so it should be smooth sailing on the back end."

But this is the 2nd video where his guitar tech is apparently failing to do his job in a reasonable amount of time. In the other video, Alex's guitar stops working, and the tech doesn't even have a spare guitar anywhere nearby! It takes a while for him to finally show up with a spare guitar. There are usually spares right there, beside the stage if not on the stage. Here: th-cam.com/video/KZPwCEHZIjs/w-d-xo.html

I was at this show in the second row right infront of Alex...the Video doesn't do justice. You really can't see the expressions on his face he was "PISSSED"....he's joking to the audience, but this face showed his true frustration. It wasn't the first time it happened on the tour either. The Far Cry Pyro's blew out his tech several times on the tour.

I wasn't there, and I don't know how Alex handles it, but I've had this happen quite a few times, and for me it's more panic/helplessness than being pissed. Pretty sure it's hard to distinguish from the audience POV, though... Several malfunctions over the course of a tour and it does get really old.

Daniel - do you understand what happened? Even when the guitar was working, Alex was annoyed, and remained annoyed. He wouldn't move from that spot close to the technician, he had no confidence that the "fix" was going to stay, but something was still wrong, and I'd love to know what it was. Plus of course his whole "musician" vibe was blown, and he had a hard time getting into the mindset for the solos. There were a couple of times when he started an octave lower than he wanted to and quickly corrected it, but the distraction for him was very real. There was something he just did not like or trust about the way that guitar was playing.

I remember seeing them in Evansville, Indiana at Roberts Stadium while they were doing their Moving Pictures tour. The place was packed and I remember how the audience cheered when they finished a song, especially when Neal Peart tossed a drumstick straight above him, caught it without losing a beat and then at the end of the song tossed his sticks into the audience. A great band and especially a great drummer, if not the greatest. Long live Neal Peart and Rush.

Any other band would've bowed out/cut the lights/silenced/or had some PA announcement.
What Alex did continued to bring the performance and its die-hard viewers Together! SO much that when he finally gets his guitar back you can hear the crowd roar in a Proud/Congratulatory approval.

I haven't looked through all the comments to see if any other guitar players figured out what was going on that caused the high pinging sound, but I knew exactly what it was: his high E string was caught under a fret that was either not fully seated or didn't have the end properly filed. I had an inkling just by the sound of it, and knew it for sure when he could play notes normally on the high E string on the higher frets, but the lower ones (and open position) all resulted in the same thin, pingy note, which was the note of whichever fret was just above the problematic one that caught the string, I've had it happen a few times and it's maddening. He must not have had it happen before or I'd think he would have known right away and yanked the string out from under the offending fret. Still, I feel his pain and the fact that he was able to make a good show of it for the crowd, ESPECIALLY after having the wireless problem that was causing him to have no signal at all, is incredibly impressive. I'd have thrown the guitar across the stage by that point!

That was an odd performance of La V S for sure, but it had some poignant moments in the solo that don’t always come through. What a great piece.

I've seen Rush a number of times going back to the "Signals" tour; this is the best that I've seen Alex handle guitar issues. I've seen him absolutely flip out on his tech more than once.

Not Alex or the band, they have an undeniable sense of humor and professionalism no other band had.

This is well filmed- and funny as hell! Saw Rush back in late 90's (I think) and encore was Natural Science, and Geddy & Neil were lost in the intro without a net, and Alex was the only one on time and saved their asses as they all laughed.

This is great. I saw Yes once in 2011/12 and was in the first row when Steve Howe's guitar dropped out and he gave some pretty scary crypt keeper looks over to the side of the stage. They had him back up and running quickly but Lerxst just has so much more calmness and humor than most LOL.

This is my favorite version of La Villa now. Not only do we get an impromptu rant from Lerxst, we see absolute, 100% professionalism in the face of equipment failure.
    Grace Under Pressure, indeed.

Unlike most bands, this proves Rush were real musicians that were expericed in their art. Most people would get extremly mad, though stuff, but not Rush. They make it fun and play along. Its live and it aint always perfect. This is why we love Rush. Music can be larger than life itself, but it'll never be larger than the crys and laughs it instills along way. Thanks Rush!

I loved that after they get to actually playing the song, he's having a conversation with the tech, while still playing his guitar part. That's crazy level of multi-tasking.

7:34 That china/pang/swish Neil bashes throughout the tail end of Alex's solo. Neil and Larry Allen or whomever mic'd those exotic cymbals so well it sounded like they had infinitesimal decay. It was BASH-BASH and the ringing disappeared behind the music until the next BASH-BASH. I've played for 43 years and Neil's affinity for chinas was one of the many reasons that made me love Rush.

I never get tired of watching Alex pull out that white Gibson ES-355 - I had to get myself one a few years ago - first song I played on it was Working Man then La Villa Strangiato - as I wept out of my eyes tears of respect for Alex and that fact i was just like him now - or rather had one of the same guitars as him

Their music at the time was truly prodigious.

Saw them in a Toronto on this tour and Alex had same issue with his equipment. He did not put a humorous spin on it that night and was visibly frustrated and upset with the tech. Not that I blame him, at this level the sh*t should work. But good to see him handle it so well here and have them turn it into something good.

I was at this show, near where this was filmed. Matter of fact I think that's me saying 'He still doesn't have it' referring to his guitar feed after his rig blew during Far Cry. The crowd was singing 'still no guitar' after the show ended.
