That was actually offside. There should atleast be two players in front of the reciever to be onside. In general cases, the goalkeeper plus one defender keeps the player onside. But in this case, the goalkeeper is behind the offside line, so there is only 1 player in front the offside line keeping the receiver offside. Imagine that the defender on the goal line is the goalkeeper and the goalkeeper is a defender. Now you can clearly know that it was offside.
As a referee myself, i can say, that the official was spot on! The rule is not 'behind the last defender' but 'behind the second last player on the defending team'. Therefore (since goalkeeper and defender now is swapped) they still play the same role. So offside. Edit: Removed "Refereeing degree" as there is no such thing. But I have been a ref for a long time now. And studied the rules for a long part of my life. :)

I played football for 7 years. Offside was always explained to me that there must always be a defender between the goal and you when a pass is given to you or ur offside and whatever you do after doesnt count cuz it would be unfair. I always assumed goalkeepers didnt count as they always said a defender. Never knew it means the second to last man and goalkeeper counts. Well i never did play in games where there was money at steak.

Very few commentators have actually been referees, they are usually former players..and since players( and most coaches) don't know the rules either, there you go. This was actually an easy call, but referees know how to analyze plays, players don't.
+YettonbigH there are 3 things that must be certain for an offside to incur, now I'm not going to go into detail, but one of them is if the second last DEFENDER is closer to the centre of the field than the attacker... Now defender is the keyword, defender relates to any one who is on the defending team, now unless the goalkeeper is his own team, he counts as the defending team, hence the decision, offside... Not going to lie. I knew about this rule before I was 10 years old. Being a huge football fan at a young age and all. Amazed me that even to this day, people think I am talking rubbish when I tell them about this rule and that you simply cannot pass forward to teammate if you are behind the goalkeeper, and there is only one defender there. The rule has good reasoning for being in the game too. The rule in basic form is that you need two opposition players ahead of you. Simple as that. Just any 2 players. Usually its Goalkeeper plus 1 defender. Take the goalkeeper out and that means 2 defenders. You always need 2, to pass it forward. You usually never see it because, simply the goalkeeper isn't out as often, and when they are out, the attacker tends to be too close to the goal, so shoots or goes backwards.
Anyone who's ever played Pro clubs or drop in Pro matches as a GK will know this. You can troll the opposition by constantly having them flagged offside as the GK.

As far as I know, the offside rule is not about defenders, it is about count of the opposite players behind the striker. If the count is 0 or 1 (in most cases it is just the goalie, but here it was a defender) then offside is called.

So had they swapped place, he’s have been offside still, had he been behind the goalkeeper it would have been onside as the goalkeeper and defender on the line count as 2 players

The keeper rushing off his line has played the player on the far post offside because the outfield player on the near post is now recognised as the keeper and since the keeper isn’t the last defender the offside won’t be drawn from him. It’s confusing but makes sense if you think about it

Offside was always explained to me that there must always be a defender between the goal and you when a pass is given to you or ur offside and whatever you do after doesnt count cuz it would be unfair. I always assumed goalkeepers didnt count as they always said a defender. Never knew it means the second to last man and goalkeeper counts. Well i never did play in games where there was money at steak.

As a town rec level ref, this is one of the first potentially unintuitive things that they teach you, and it's easy to remember because you're always looking for it since it's honestly a fun call to make when it happens. The commentator probably has never actually been trained as a ref.

The offside rule states that 3 things need to be true in order for a player to be judged offside. They are:
1. The player must be on his opponent's half
2. The player must be closer to the goal-line than the ball at the moment the pass to him was made.
3. The player must be closer to the goal-line than the SECOND TO LAST defender on the opposing team. In other words, there must be two players on the opposite team closer to the goal-line than the player.

Im a FIFA referee myself, so maybe I can explain,
Offside position happens when a player is nearer to the goal line than the ball and 2nd last defender (take note, not last defender). So when the goal keeper moves forward, he puts the player into an offside position.
Being in a offside position, may not necessary be penalized, unless you are interfering with play. And for this instance, the offside player took a shot a score, hence interfering with play.
It is clear offside, and it is a good decision, since normally the 2nd last defender is a player and not the goal keeper. But for this case, the 2nd last defender became the goal keeper, so the assistant referee had to be alert.

Very few commentators have actually been referees, they are usually former players..and since players( and most coaches) don't know the rules either, there you go. This was actually an easy call, but referees know how to analyze plays, players don't.

For anyone who’s not understanding why it’s offside, offside zone is the region between the second-to-last man to the goal line. Typically, the last man is the goal keeper and the second-to-last man happens to be a defender
However, in this video, the defender in front of the goal is the last man and the goalkeeper is the second to last man.
Basically, treat the goalkeeper as your typical defender and imagine the defender being the goalkeeper. That’s why this is offside
Two players. Two players need to be in front of the attacker. Usually the goalkeeper is near the goal so we don't count him, but not in this case. The goalkeeper came out to punch the ball so it needs to be two players in front of the attacker.

This is the official rule of offside by FIFA. So second last opponent in this case, would be the keeper himself, and hence he was still in an offside position. Usually the keeper is the last person, but as you can see here the last guy is the defender on the line

Not going to lie. I knew about this rule before I was 10 years old. Being a huge football fan at a young age and all. Amazed me that even to this day, people think I am talking rubbish when I tell them about this rule and that you simply cannot pass forward to teammate if you are behind the goalkeeper, and there is only one defender there. The rule has good reasoning for being in the game too.
The rule in basic form is that you need two opposition players ahead of you. Simple as that. Just any 2 players. Usually its Goalkeeper plus 1 defender. Take the goalkeeper out and that means 2 defenders. You always need 2, to pass it forward.
You usually never see it because, simply the goalkeeper isn't out as often, and when they are out, the attacker tends to be too close to the goal, so shoots or goes backwards.

As far as I know, the offside rule is not about defenders, it is about count of the opposite players behind the striker. If the count is 0 or 1 (in most cases it is just the goalie, but here it was a defender) then offside is called.
