There is no such law that allows businesses to "refuse service" based on religious preferences. The old wives tale of "no shoes, no shirt, no service" is just a phrase. There is no code of law or authority that allows for this. It's the exact opposite. Several laws exist that PROHIBIT businesses from discriminatory practice. The penalty for discrimination in CA is $12,000 per occurrence when in violation of the Unruh Civil Rights Act and $35,000 in violation of the hate crimes act. Do I have the right to rely upon the law? Or are these empty sentences void of meaning? CA Civil Code 51 prohibits discrimination against religion in places of public accommodation. Title III Reg 28 CFR §36.104 defines a "public accommodation" as a private business that is engaged in commerce and serving the public. Public accommodations are prohibited from denying entry to patrons based on several protected classes including religion. Private businesses must abide by all state, local and federal laws. No private business may institute a policy that violates the law. Can Costco institute "Fist-Fight Fridays"? Can Walmart institute "Pick-Pocket Tuesdays? Can Sprouts require you to "punch granny in the face" just because it's their store policy? No. Accordingly, no store can deny entry to someone based on their religious beliefs, regardless of any other policy. Federal law 28 CFR §36.202 prohibits "denial of participation" from any business establishment. §36.202(c) states that unless I have been individually assessed as a "direct threat" you many not exclude me from the SAME and EQUAL services as others

Loool so true
What can you buy in a supermarket that's private? And what happens at the checkout? What a maroon!
Some people are just too much
Yeah, maybe she should have tried online shopping instead.
All of her feeble objections were just attempts to control others to her liking. Usually the person who collects the order is different from the person who bags and seals the order who is different from the person who actually rings it up. If she is truly concerned with the payment arrangement there is no way she would ever be able to do online shopping. Also, a lot of curbside pick-up places have cordless terminals where they can do a debit purchase anywhere within about 50' of the store.
Or if all of that fails, pay with cash if allowed.
She was just a silly woman, all upset because she couldn't control others to her wishes. Besides, rare is the city that doesn't have multiple places to shop for your "naughty objects".
Every store has the same policy: "We can refuse service to anyone."

@@SaraNightfire1 I hate Karen's 😒
There was another Karen trying to shop at a clothing store in Costa Mesa where she didn’t want to wear a mask because she said “ I have a health condition where I can’t wear a mask”. The manager asked her to wear a mask or they can provide her one but she refuses.
"Okay, so where's the regulations that states that?" Proceeds to film the signage that clearly states that it is required for all employees and customers to wear them. 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
These Karens aren't the brightest bulbs in the marquee.
Policy and regulations are not the same thing. Close! But not the same. Nice try.
@@jdubdoubleu To be fair, a private company has the right to _regulate_ things on their private property by enacting certain policies.
Angry Combat Wombat - she does, a store is not private property like your home, since is is defined as a place of public accommodation. Important words, since that’s what allows the state to regulate real discrimination like not letting people of color, or of this or that religion shop.
That said, the regulations are sound. You may not be able to wear a mask, due to health conditions, and the ADA would have to determine what those regulations look like. But this isn’t it. She was offered to have someone shop for her. That’s a fair accommodation.

Anyone who actually has a medical condition would be carrying a note from a doctor & would know to release the grocery store from any liability if they get sick by choosing not to wear a mask.
Also, HIPPA applies to insurance companies. They're not allowed to share your info. You freely choose whether or not to disclose your medical conditions yourself.

No, she asked for the regulations, as in laws. She knew the company policy but was apparently of the impression that there were laws preventing said policies.
The store however is well within their rights to issue a mask requirement for health reasons, and they are well within their rights to refuse service based on their policies. If she can't wear a mask she should get someone else to shop for her, which was also offered to her and she refused.
