  • Liverpool and Scotland legend Graeme Souness follows on from Jurgen Klopp as the latest guest on the Robbie Fowler Podcast. No nonsense on and off the pitch, Graeme lifts the lid on football management today, reveals why he only ever asked one question in seven years at Liverpool and adds another illuminating chapter to his ongoing 'feud' with Manchester United's Paul Pogba.
The Scot also reflects on the biggest low of his career, why he always knew Robbie was destined for the top and gives his verdict on Steven Gerrard's managerial future.
The Robbie Fowler Podcast | In conversation with Graeme Souness | Episode 3 | In partnership with McDonald's UAE.

Along with Stevie G he is our finest EVER CM player. Without question. He made mistakes as Liverpool manager ,by his own admission, what gutted me too was the fact that he sold Beardsley (to Everton), Houghton & Staunton (to Villa) ..Loved all 3 of them to bits but he did introduce Macca, Robbie etc... and won us an FA Cup.

I did not see Souness play, I only knew him as a manager and I did not used to like him because of that ( I saw him as the reason we fell from grace I was 9-11 years old at the time), but I grew up and educated myself, watched him as an LFC player, and revised my opinion, and now I love Souness. I also realise now, he took it too early, also there were other factors involved that were nothing to do with Souness.
Nothing but love and respect for the man, I wish he could have done better in his management time with us, but what he did as a player (and WHAT A PLAYER!!!!!) wipes out any bad management years in my eyes. Please forgive my childish previous reasoning I knew no better, but I made sure I learned better in the future Thanks for being one of our greatest I think in my lifetime only the likes of Gerrard and maybe Xabi were on the same level. Legend and great man (dude has a heart of gold, integrity and it clearly pains him he could not achieve what he wished at the helm of LFC)
My mum is from the Northwest and was born on Merseyside, but I was born in the south west, and I did not have liverpool fans around me to educate me on the club (my Mum's brothers were all born in Manchester and were all Man u fans, and her father was a Man city fan), so I was ignorant really up until the mid 00's when I went on a mission to learn as much as I could about my club

What a man,a true leader takes responsibility,in that,he is second to none. In the souness era you had to be able to take care of yourself and your slighter team mates,he did it all whilst sticking the ball in the net at the same time. I had the moment of my life ,next to my son being born, when i met him at the meet n greet at secc in glasgow a couple o years ago with hately durranty jim white, got to meet him face to face,i was so overcome i lifted him up in a big bear hug,he took it brilliantly in the spirit it was given, love the man,he gave me more pleasure than my own mother growing up.but thats another story.I,m 61 now.❤ Sooooooness, the BEST!!

Stevie G was a great player, but he’ll never be good enough to manage Liverpool, not now and not ever. He’s got to much about himself going on in his big head. Remember when he went Orange on the Sunbeds ? It’s always been about him. He has to learn to give himself 100% and right now for me, he’s a long long way off.

If Graeme Souness, wrote a book, solely on his recollections from his time at Spurs, and all the way through to present day, Id buy it, maybe it would be a thousand pages plus, it would be full of honesty and belief on how a player, any player who listened to his elder team mates, and the management, could be a better player, and carry that knowledge on.
The only person I can remember who Graeme couldn't get the better of was Yosser Hughes.

Yes, i read that in Men in White Suits, in Graemes chapter. I dont know about how likely we could have got Cantona, but Schmeichel actually wrote to Graeme asking for a trial. With him in goal, we would not have given so many gifts to opposing teams.

He was awsome Tony, and his influence was massive off the pitch as well as on. Micheal Robinson, has told the story of how Souness was in the dressing room, just before a match in the league cup against Brentford, shouting and bellowing at each player, Brentford were treated as if they were Barcelona, no complacency, every player, they had to be switched on from the kick off until the final whistle.

When Graham says the players were expected to take responsibility, the emphasise is on 'empowering' the players rather than micro managing them and fault finding. Being encouraged to act on your own initiative without fear of penalty, works. Being held responsible for using your initiative, doesn't as it's not conducive in empowering you.

No one remembers the Sun story. Carra takes the shilling from Murdoch ffs. Souness is remembered as the best LfC captain we have ever had full stop. Heroic player. Tried his best as manager. Great great man and up there with Dalsgish and Rushie as all time legends way above the Spice Boys generation as his medals prove. Obvious that the Spice Boys failed to win titles because they inherited the drinking attitude and being slack in training as Bob admits while MuFC embraced the teetotal style lifestyle and won title after title. Took Houllier and Rafa and the Klopp to finally get LfC to embrace a proper modern approach to training. Loved the talent of Robbie but the effort levels and tackling back and win at all costs was missing. Souey you are a total legend mate #ynwa

For me, Souness leaving Liverpool in the wake of our European cup win in 1984, was the first dommino in the clubs eventual decline. To lose such an influential player both on and off the pitch would have both short and long term inplications. I know its easy to say, but i believe that Liverpool would have challenged for the title better than they did that season, and would have put up a better show against Utd in the FA cup semi-final.
