Still pisses me off slightly that Carra retired ONE year too early because the next season our front 4 clicked and i KNOW that the 50+ goals we conceded wouldn't have been so high if Carra was playing.. I'm sure he would have won us an extra point or two but...

I've said the same thing so many times! If he was in the team we'd have won it, the defence was struggling and his mental strength would have got us across the line! I remember seeing Jamie Carragaher in one of his first ever perfromances at Anfield in the 1996/97 season. I can't remember the opponent, it might have been West Ham but it ended a 1:1 draw. There were too many draws at Anfield that season....
Carragher came in for either Michael Thomas, John Barnes or Jamie Rednapp who were the three first choices (usually two out of three played due to a back five set up under Roy Evans).
I remember coming away from Anfield being distinctly unimpressed, and decided in my mind he had no real future at Anfield at all. Throughout the match Jamie only passed sideways, no forward pass, and what concerned me was he had to pivot his whole body to pass the ball in a certain direction, showing a distinct lack of technique or natural ability.
Jamie also seemed to have no real athleticism which is needed in midfield. So , over the years I became pleasantly (and extremely) surprised Jamie became such an important player in the team to the point where he is top five in appearances for Liverpool.
However, listening to Jamie here it begins to make more sesnse. Clearly Jamie knew his limitations and realised that he was only going to make it as a defender.
As Robbie said, his biggest asset is probably communication and will to win so that makes up for other attributes such as speed or great technical ability.
It could be that I was a bit harsh judging Carragher's abilities as I grew up watching midfielders like Molby, McMahon, Whelan, Houghton, Spackman and by 1997 Liverpool were not getting those quality players anymore. But at the same time Jamie was never a good understudy for Michael Thomas or Jamie Rednapp.
Therefore, definitely salute Carragher for having the career he ended up having at Liverpool Football Club.

Carragher when on about his mental strength, availability & organisation is why he played at the top level - Conor Coady the current day equivalent.
I remember him saying the exact same thing to Conor during lockdown last year..I think Coady has slightly more ability with the ball..Long diagonal passes etc...

That European Cup Final V Milan, at half time 3-0 down, my wife and daughter said " Can we turn the T.V over to watch something else " I replied no chance Im watching this even if we get beat 6-0, then I drank 6 tins of large Carlsberg, and the rest is history, by the end of the Pens I was Bramms and List, and bouncing all over the place, what a night, and all the boys did their bits, Dudeks saves, Traore kicking it out when the shot was going in, Carragher stretching for all sorts, and the other lads pulling out their guts for 120 mins.
That was the greatest team performance Id seen and Ive been watching since 1964 boys pen.

Jordan Henderson stands out as somebody who did it at Liverpool after an unremarkable start.
Didn’t have Carra screaming at him every day. Gerrard nurtured him and can take HUGE credit for the captain that Jords has turned into. jords is the last great player that Kenny signed. Remember Kenny signed Steve McManaman in the 80s plus Barnes and Beardsley and Aldo and second coming of Rush. And Suarez. Kenny is the goddamn King and Jords is one of his many many legacies.

Great program & I’m an Evertonian. My only criticism would be I would have liked more stories ie. funny incidents, arguments within the club, who was it hard to play against, who was the dirtiest player etc.

Carra's normally bang on with his statistics and ability to remember things that have happened on the pitch in the past but "didi hamann took a year to settle" is an odd comment..... we signed didi from Newcastle!! Surprised he didn't mention xabi alonso either he was fantastic in his first season prior to lampard snapping his ankle.

I feel the biggest problem for Thiago is him putting too much weight on his own shoulders. He signed for a Premier League winning club about to win for a second year on the trot. Then crap happens. Thiago in my mind is one of the few who's played with responsibility each game and with the team and rest of the players being the way it's been this season, he's not been able to shine the way he definitely can.
Played with responsibility? He's been booked 4 times in 15 games. Already one away from a suspension

I love this podcast. Jamie is fine example of a footballer who works hard and gets rewards. I know Robbie is best known for Liverpool, but would love some players from Leeds on the pod from he played for us.
You had a great team back in those days mate. Nicely martyn, Danny Mills, ferdinand/Woodgate, radibe, harte (what a left back! Up there with irwin, Cole and robbo as the best lbs this leagues seen), dacourt, batty, bowyer (people forget how good he was for a couple of seasons should have had more caps), kewell/wilcox, viduka, Smith/Robbie keane/fowler.... didn't you sign Barmby off us at some point back then as well?

@@jakemodi3615 We were a cracking team back then. Barmby did come in but never really produced. To be fair to him, he signed for us when the ship started to sink, it was a terrible time those fine two years in the PL.

I'm a massive Liverpool fan but grew up in the North of England with a lot of Leeds (n United) fan mates. Players like yeboah and Jimmy Floyd were some of my favourite Premier league players growing up alongside the obvious reds n the serie a superstars of the time.
Cara maybe didn’t have natural ability, but his mind was sharp which gave him that extra yard on the pitch. His understanding helped get him into the best positions before it turned into something dangerous. Read the game brilliantly and as he said himself, was never quiet.
Even Big Drogba said cara was always shouting, at him and his own players.
Carra was a hoof merchant and his dominance of the club meant we had a hoof merchant with little technical ability ordering people around. May have known his stats but as Neville proved that means nothing about being a successful manager or league winning vice captain. Carra to me seemed a bully. Def a legend of the club and love the guy but was too dominant in the squad and we are better off with technical CBs and captains who understand that a squad is a best way of winning league titles.

I wish he didnt care as much about how we thought. I've always thought if we had Carra in 2013/14 we may have won the league. We needed more experience in that defence. Thought carragher would have just chipped a goal or two off and got us an extra point or two.

Carra's greatest game was definitely the 2005 CL final. That Milan team was one of the best 11's in the history of the game. Theyw ere in their prime too, not on the way down etc etc. Carra and the other lads gave everything they possibly could and it was really taking a tole in extra time. Between their skill, efforts and luck, we somehow won that game. They might not have won the PL but they've done something that will maybe never be matched, in winning that CL, in that way.

Would have been Interesting to see how Carra would have done if he had been given a coaching role at the club! I'm sure he,d have been an asset.
These two never acted like coaches at end of their careers and put egos before the club basically. So did Gerrard and he admits he should have accepted a reduced role. Milner is an example of no ego and accepting a reduced role and will probs be a great manager. Spice boys were the ‘’me’ generation. Klopp is the ‘we’ generation.
So true Cameron thanks for that perspective, I always felt this about Gerrard and Carra, if Carra would have accepted a reduced role he would have played a huge part in 13/14 and who knows we may have won the league as we had serious defensive issues
@@sexpistolsdaz Carra had already played a reduced role for the 11/12 and 12/13 season. Believe me when I say that Carra just thought his time had come and felt he couldn’t cut it anymore. Not that I agree with that because when Carra got back in the team for the 2nd half of the 12/13 season he was outstanding bar one game (against Zenit) and I think most people agree that he would’ve gotten us an extra couple points in the 13/14 season for the league. Carra NEVER put ego before the club though...

Made millions from us fans and lived a glorious life but were not willing to give up alcohol to beat MUFC and acted like bell whiffs to other squad players who might compete for places. Contrast this with Jordan Henderson and the Klopp era squad that help each other, accept rotation and play with a ‘we’ mentality. Sadly the spice boys are STILL coining in the dolla in the media living off LfC fans love for their talents when in reality the true legends were the 70s 80s and current squad. Notable exceptions for Stevie & lads like Kuyt and Hyppia who also gave their heart and soul without cashing in. We as fans have to take some blame for putting the home grown lads on a pedestal and boozing with them whenever possible. Cost us untold league titles. Glad that era has been purged from the LFC culture and we need to ensure it never comes back. No coincidence that current best players are teetotal and humble.

The mentality shift from gotta be in first 11 to accepting being part of a squad helped us win the title and for all Gerrards amazing qualities he lacked Henderson’s team first mentality. Look how Milner has accepted a reduced role and how amazing it is having him having his minutes managed. Stevie wanted to start every match so threw his toys out of pram and went to LA and the suddenly realised everyone was younger and fitter than him. He himself regrets it and he has said so himself.

grew up with robbie in toxteth and you couldn't get the ball off him when he was in 2nd year junior and i was in 3rd,bear in mind we were playing 4th year junior's and they couldn't get it off him aswell.top lad from a top family,think even he'll admit he owes everything he achieved and his career to watching me as a kid,bomber cumo they used to call me...as i was always getting dropped.i remember being up front with him as he was that good he was in my year aswell and we were playing speke comp.i scored the best goal he said he'd ever seen,i took on 10 men and didn't even drop my mr feeze then i thundered in an 85 yarder...ok it was wind assisted as i'd just had a prawn madras but still.i also held the record for the longest sliding tackle in nugent high school against speke comp in the same match,i started sliding near the halfway line and finished up having a 50/50 with a granada scorpio on speke boulevard.tarmac burns all over the shop,anyhoo hope you're doing great my arl mate and couldn't be prouder of you...ste "i used to play up front with robbie fowler" cumo

Carra might love Liverpool, but he loves Everton more. But his media persona and public identity is built on him being a staunch Liverpool fan. And so most people just accept it at face value.

Thiago is too good for Liverpool at the moment, can’t be much fun for him at the moment in there. Unless there is significant change into next season, he’d be best to cut his losses and look at another move. Hope things do work out for him, because I’m a red and I’d love him to be thriving at the club, but I look around and he’s just on another playing level and we aren’t there yet as a squad.

Brenda was never for me. I remember his statements when he was Swansea boss and i was 'wtf?'. He HAS improved hugely and Celtic was great for him but Brenda was always about Brenda. Still is.
