- This is a quick little procedure on how to engage Neutral on a BMW F model 5 series, if the car has power but does not start.
On my 550i there was no plastic transmission key in the trunk, and there is no way to unlock the transmission under the cup-holder.
Lifting the car, climbing under and dismantling portion of the undercarriage is not really an option on the side of a major highway either.
I did a lot of searching and found a procedure on Bimmerfest from tim330i , which seemed to do the trick. Tim if you ever see this video, Thank you.
The procedure Is:
1. Turn on ignition
2. Press and hold brake, and hold it for the remainder of the steps
3. Press the Start/Stop button (starter will engage)
4. Press the unlock button on the shifter and move it to Neutral and hold it there until a transmission error is displayed.
5. Release the shifter, and immediately re-select Neutral
6. If Neutral is displayed on the shifter you can release the brake and the shifter, now you are in Neutral
To re-engage Park, either turn off the ignition or select Park .
Good luck, this should buy you enough time to pull the car safely onto a flatbed tow-truck. DO NOT tow the car like this without a flatbed, as park may re-engage after 10 minutes or so or if the battery runs low.
Thank you so much for making this video. I was broke down in the middle of a construction project and no one could get around my vehicle. I was aware of the screw under the vehicle but was unaware of the unlock feature with the gear shifter. I watched your video and was able to get pushed off of the road into a safe area until the tow truck arrived. Thanks again.
It works cause your car still can crank. My starter failed and it won't crank at all, it will not allow you to swift to Neutral mode.
Yeah this video is a life saver. A 550i I wanted to buy has the high pressure pump die on it

Just to let you guys know this is the whong way to do this. There is a shift lock override it's legally required. He lifted the wrong bezel on this particular car it's under the bezel around the shift knob itself.
Not in this model....this is the only way if you talking different model than yes I have also 535 Xi 2011

No it's stupid but the shift override is under the car very poor design
In my case the engine hydrolocked in a flood, so i cant crank the engine. Just put some oil on the rear tires and just pull it like that on the tow truck. Did not have anything else to do, anyway engine seems to be fine, no knocks. Changed the oil and filter. Water got in from a 6mm drain hole on the driver under seat speaker, about 2l. Dried for 2 days and all is good.
Someone said there is a bolt on the transmission that unlocks to N, did not check that. Car is a 530xd n57 190kw.
I removed glow plugs cranked the engine with intake hose disconected until all water got out, refit glow plugs started the engine and more water came out of the intercooler about 1l.

Only works if the engine cranks. Good info but if the engine doesn’t crank it will stay in park. At that moment you’re gonna have to use skates to drag the vehicle onto the bed, wheel lift it on dollies or just wheel lift it backwards and tie the steering wheel.
You can pull tout the fuel pump fuse and starter relay you need only the power to ecu and good to go to push the car around

Or lay under the stupid vehicle and put it neutral so it can run over you so you or your family can sue BMW cooperation.

this procedure don’t work I try on my bmw x3 f25 8 speed automatic jan 2015 build .
My starter is over and dont let me put in Neutral. I putt in N from under the car i screw a bolt from automatic transmission and i have a god battery , all lights was working fine ,trying even to jump start

I am sorry if the procedure didnt work for you, I was able to get it to work on an X3 but I think it was a little bit of an older model than yours. if it didnt work, you may have the big red key option under the cup holder

There is a guy up in the comments that claims there is an override under the shift bezel, but I never found that on this car. sadly If the car doesn't crank you are probably gonna have to muck around with the transmission lock screw under the car, or use dolleys to move the car around. Flat bed Tow-trucks will have wheel skids to help them get the car up on the bed. Frankly I hope the guy above in the comments is correct, and there is a release switch like on the e90 type transmissions. Good luck.

Unfortunately this only works if your car cranks over, I have performed this on my car as well as on an X5 and an X3.
BMW is stupid, no release like earlier models.

I got over 170000 KM or just over 100k miles.
