#SuperMario RPG was the first in a line of great role-playing games featuring the titular plumber. I grew up with an #SNES, but I hadn't played this game until I was an adult, so it was interesting to see how many things it inspired in future Mario RPGs. It has great music, memorable gameplay that still holds up to this day, but oddly enough for a Squaresoft game, its story is pretty lacking, and a lot of strange character choices were made when it came to the antagonists. Love Bowser though, he's my favorite!

i think i know what charriii means by [COMPLETELY LEGAL COPY OF SUPER MARIO RPG] and that's playing on a PC emulator called ZSNES. i had the same problems he described but luckily ZSNES has save states so i could recover from a freeze. and btw i could never get the blue star piece on the emulator. idk why but every time the game would freeze upon me reciving the blue star piece. or to be more specific im talking about the star piece you get from the shark pirate dude.
I mean how old is the game now? Is it even possible to get the game physically and playable for a reasonable price nowadays?

LITTLE KNOWN FACT: If you go back to the balcony on Booster's Tower after Peach joins your party, you'll find Booster out there with the Snifits looking up at the sky and wondering when his next bride will fall from the sky. Then if you go back again after you beat Valentina, you'll find her there with Booster trying to convince her to marry him. At first she refuses, but then he whispers something in her ear, and whatever it is causes her to fall for him. This explains why they're seen getting married in the ending scene.
Yyyyyeah, it's clear that Nintendo was the one who was writing the story, that's why the story was so lacking for a SquareSoft game. I don't get why Nintendo could've just let Square do the story writing. ...Oh wait, that's right. Nintendo most likely just asked Square to implement their RPG mechanics while *Nintendo* did the story writing. I wonder if Nintendo even learned anything about a good story when they looked at Chrono Trigger.

How about a sin for putting a hidden block in Toadstool Castle that you can only reach at the start of the game by using the Toad that accompanies you as a platform?

@@starrypines590 There's a hidden block on top of the doorway at the end of the first hallway in Peach's castle. This can only be accessed on your first visit to the castle, jumping on Toad's head as he makes his way to the back leading you to the Chancellor. If you do not get it on this first visit, you can never get to it on that file. The random Toad wandering the hall nearby never goes close enough to get up, and when you return with Peach later Toad zooms ahead and doesn't give an opportunity to jump on him.

I mean, I could go on and say that it's a video game, entirely fictional, thus it can't be in the real world, but that'd be cheap and would suggest most films, like Rocky Balboa, aren't "set in the real world" either, _but_ what I _can_ say is that most of Nintendo's games _are_ set in the same universe, with at least Mario, Donkey Kong, and Banjo, as well as, debatably, the land of Hyrule, coexisting on one planet. Since Mario and Donkey Kong both appear in Punch-Out, we can assume Punch-Out also takes place on this same planet.

Quick question, why exactly would Mario build his house in a place that requires him to traverse a road filled with monsters to get to his Princess, but takes less effort to get to the home of his sworn enemy?
So it's just a quick jog when he needs to kick Bowser's ass, then have an excuse to not go back to the castle
Toad does note that "the area is swarming with monsters" so maybe they landed here after Bowser's keep was invaded.

As a huge Mario nerd, I can confirm that the concept of heaven exists in Mario canon, and is a playable level in Super Paper Mario (Hell also exists, but it’s closer to the version in Greek mythology).

Peach constantly gets kidnapped cuz if she uses even 0.001% of her power to protect herself, she'll destroy the world. That's why you fight Culex in that trippy void area. That's the only world that can easily handle her power. In Super Princess Peach, she's learned how to handle her powers a little easier, but she still doesn't use them much, just to be safe. Do *not* underestimate Princess Toadstool. She *can* and *will* end you if you're not careful.
I mean, she *did* fling Bowser across half of the Mushroom Kingdom in Bowser's Inside Story, so...

I dunno if you got the references or not but Mack is a knife, Bowyer is a bow, the Axem Rangers rode a giant Blade and Yaridovich should have been renamed to Speardnik or something to keep the pun (Yari means Spear in Japanese). Smithy is literally an evil blacksmith creature. All of his creatures (except shysters) are some kind of weapon that you would use in a normal JRPG.
In the remake, Yaridovich is renamed…..Speardovich (“ovich” meaning “son of” in Russian.)

I was originally not really planning on it, since the whole reason I can even stand the Mario RPGs in the first place is because of the Action Commands, and I thought Super Mario RPG didn't have them... apparently they do, so that's really good.

Yeah, but I think the story should be more handled by Square Enix instead of Nintendo. Charrii5 was also able to point out the flaws of characters like Booster, Valentina (well, not entirely), and the Axem Rangers.

I remember downloading this game to my Wii and playing through a good chunk of it and there was like some point where all my stars that I collected were taken away and I didn't figure out where I was supposed to go. I don't recall if this game was actually on the SNES classic which I currently have and as far as I can tell I don't believe it's on the SNES online service on the switch, but hopefully it will be cuz I'd love to actually try to get through this game entirely. I grew up in the 90s but very much missed out on this game

To be fair, Luigi hadn’t really been established as a unique character yet. He wouldn’t have anything to feel unique to Mario.
Since SMB2 (the Japanese and American versions both), Luigi started to be differentiated from Mario (different physics in both versions and a whole different sprite in the American version).
Not to mention that there were two whole animated series based on SMB by that time just in America where Luigi was necessarily given his own personality. There was also the live action movie and comics and God knows what else.

@@adark1289, I can see why you'd say that but some of that characterization from the cartoons seems to have carried right on through the rest of the series. Also, Nintendo has always maintained an iron grip on their cash cow licenses. I wouldn't be surprised if they actually had a lot of involvement with the cartoons and the movie and would have definitely had it set up where they had final say over anything.

@@BlizzardxThexWolf The first time was cause you needed to meet Vivian, but yes I so agree for after you see his bird. He could be back at the Steeple as soon as you know his name. I think the curse affected every other partner since they still follow Doopliss back to the Steeple after you say his name anyway. I wonder which other time saves there could be? I kinda liked Flavio's reluctant and petty nature. Ch3 could've been a few less fights and had a modified postgame, but overall I still really like it.

I can never unhear the characters in this game thanks to LordOfTheJimmy's Super Mario Guy RPG series, where characters had Family Guy voices.
Mario is Peter, Peach is Lois, Bowser is Stewie, Mallow is Chris, and Geno is Brian to name a few.
Loved this game back in the day - thanks for bringing it back. I remember the characters and gameplay more than the story, but have fond feelings...
